One of the greatest works of the 20th c. should be performed more often. I was lucky to hear the wonderful Czech Philharmonic play this at their home, Dvorak Hall, Prague.
This harsh but always tonal music was composed at a time whan Honegger had pessimistic feelings about men and the society. This symphony is called ''lilturgic' since the author links each movement with some typical words of the Roman liturgy, which appear to him to characerize it at best, but by no ways it should be cconsidered as an implicit religious music. . Mravinsky is excellent in conducting this music. It is a follow-on of his work on Prokofiev and Chostakovitch. Great recording.
Mravinski who conducted the most agressive scores of Prokofiev and Shostakovitch among others is perfect to conduct this symphony of Honegger, who had become a pessimistic man and offers us here an agressive vision of mankind, through titles coming from the Bible and the liturgy. and a vey dissonant music (but always tonal). This recording is hauntigly beautiful.
In 1947, Shostakovich made an excellent arrangement for two pianos. He had met Honegger when the older composer visited the Soviet Union several years before.
@@paullewis2413 I must admit, I was quite surprised receiving this reply from you, for I can't even recall making this comment about Mravinsky 2 years ago. Anyway, I still think Mravinsky excellent. But I 100 % agree with you. Not only for the 3rd but also Karajan's recording off the 2nd symphony are arguably the greatest recordings ever of both.
What a surprise. This performance was perhaps a tiny bit rough around the edges, but the players totally threw themselves into this, especially the brass, as mentioned in a prior comment. Think for a minute: This was during the Cold War, so it it remotely possible these musicians were trying to tell us that they dearly hoped for an end to war and hostility, which is what the symphony suggests in its wind-up? (And I wager this is the performance that inspired Karajan's classic 1972 recording.)
The mastery of these musicians is unbelievable.
Beautiful and Mravinsky is one of the great conductos !
Thanks

Magnificent by Mravinsky! Who better to conduct this intense symphony.
Karajan´s early 1970´s performance is generally considered the finest recording and I certainly wouldn´t disagree. :-)

Great performance. Man, those brass players are animals. They let them out of their cage for this gig? :)
mravinsky !!
