Honegger deserves to be better known and played more often in concert halls and the like.

No kidding? A few years ago the Minnesota Orchestra programmed Honegger's Symphony # 2 along with another fairly obscure work. Several people I knew showed up as it was almost humorous that every one came out to hear rarely performed works!

This symphony is a non stop journey of joy and at times sublimity, Full of ideas (think of that string passage towards the end of the first movement , like the sublime shifts in mood of a late Beethoven quartet (maybe opus 130?) , anyway after the first violins do the rhythmic passage we get a surge of counterpoint from the bassess and we enter a mischeivioiusly apt diversion that is refreshing as it is delightful. Rather like a tourist who encounters unexpected magic in a sudden glimpse and is restored to good huour for the rest of the journey. One word on this performance, it is the best ever simply becuase it is conducted by a genius who understood that Honeggers piece (like his Second Symphony) flows on wtih feeling, that the notes dance through the stream of time full of joy and deep sorrows. Munch phrasing and tempi are a touchstone for rendering beauty without even mentioning technique or hinting at bar lines for example. If you love the Orchestral reprertoire please get to know this piece.

Came across this very delightful symphony, and conducted a performance of it “back in the day” - nice to hear it again via UA-cam.

The final movement is pretty awesome.18:17 It's a tour-de-force, skewed, ballet dance. There's something mysterious & strange about it and it really comes across as being an evil seduction. Pas-de-Deux with a Vampire.

genius !!! continuity with Ravel and formal clearness as Beethoven ... this symphony is closer to his earlier pieces Pastorale d'Éte and Cant de Joie and his typical combination - theme A to theme B after their exposition and gradation....also you may hear sound end of symph 3 (Liturgic)i n the begininng of symph 4 (Deliciae) ...his poetic world is one of the most beatiful music ever
