Hisuian Lilligant is such a slept on pokemon, sometimed literally, as it can outspeed with chlorophyll and use sleep powder. Also, victory dance is such an insane move. It is my absolute all-time favorite grass type
For blind people Thank you so much for attending my presentation about “Chlorophyll: God’s Gift to Grass Types and first let’s talk about what it does.”
Vileplume having access to Chlorophyll as its ability, while Rafflesia (its inspiration) lacks any observable leaves, stems or even roots, *and does not have chlorophyll.* Good job!
Chlorophyll: grants speed and solar beam at the cost of being vulnerable to fire Sand/Slush Rush: Grant double speed at the cost of no damage boost Swift Swim: Fuck it we Kingdra in gen fiving
A common noob trap on Speed boosting abilities is looking at 50 base speed and thinking it doubles to 100. It also doubles your IVs and investment, so it’s faster that Base 100. Goes for Choice Scarf too. I’ve been playing casually playing comp since Gen 6 and it still surprised me how much my 55 Base Speed Beartic outspeeds with Swift Swim when I added him to my rain team this gen.
I just saw the captions! Thank you so much, it makes it so much easier to follow your flow. I'm glad to know that you maintain your smart-ass notes in the captions too. :D
H-Lilligant with chlorophyll is an insane mon. Solar Blade, Close Combat, Sleep Powder, freaking After You, it has infinite sun options and they're all good
I find it interesting how sun was made to also buff grass types on top of fire types to properly compete with rain who buffs water types who already counter fire types. Or maybe I shouldn't be typing at 1 AM
I love all your videos I've just recently gotten back into pokemon I used to play it a lot when I was a kid and your videos have helped me understand the games a lot better
ok i overestimated, it's actually just 3 grass/poison lines that get it, but they're all gen 1 mons so like ??? at least victreebel can run mixed, but what does vileplume do that venusaur doesn't
I feel like that’s a consequence of how outside of chlorophyll, there’s not a lot of other options for abilities depending on the Mons design. Not everything can have harvest and the next best options, is leaf guard which sucks. Chlorophyll is also a one size fits all option no matter what.
I’m convinced that any Pokémon that gets a speed-boosting ability of any kind is going to be one of the best pokemon in its tier, no matter how bad the rest of it is Edit: EWGF face reveal was not on my bingo card for this week
I’ve been running groudon+liligant h and no one is prepared for how fast and strong it is with solar blade, especially tera stellar. Cleanly one shots a lot of fast threats, the bears, kyogre, and does like 70% to a lot of bulky neutral Pokemon
An addendum to Chlorophyll: This ability is BEYOND broken in Mystery Dungeon. Being able to act twice in one turn is crazy, especially if you're able to learn Bullet Seed and you have a Cherrim teammate following you around. A lot of Chlorophyll mons have access to the most broken builds around in the MD series.
i love the gen 3 design of sun and rain, they're both really cool conceptually and they each have their own unique identity, with rain being all about raw water type damage (just look at kyogre) and sun being more versatile (groudon represents this perfectly, its type has nothing to do with sun and its mainly a physical attacker but sun gives it a wide variety of mixed coverage as well as defensive benefits). but right from the get go rain was stronger since water is so spammable, rain has a positive matchup into sun and thunder is a really broken move that tipped the scales even more. then in gen 4 the physical special split gutted any ideas about variety in favour of spamming your strongest moves which favoured rain even further, then gen 5 adds hurricane which meant rain now had 3 powerful neutral types that cover eachother perfectly, and in gen 9 just to ease sun's suffering they made the paradox mons and scovillian in a desperate attempt to beat rain at its own game, which completely defeated the point. koraidon shows this failed idea well, it's meant to be a mon that's really versatile thanks to its triple stab, but it literally just uses tera fire flare blitz and doesn't even run a dragon move usually in vgc
> run groudon > look for chlorophyll mons > see vileplume > base 50 speed why? Other slow grass mons actually got a reasonable ability to synergise with sun. like harvest or solar power.
It's funny how, as a kid, I thought that clorophyl, and sun overall, were just horrible for grass types. Like who would want to power up the fire type moves, they will just chunk me faster??? Kid me didn't know shit.
On the topic of Pokemon with doubled speed under weather, I really wish we had more equivalents for the other weathers, especially snow as they don't have the added benefit of increased Ice damage under snow as Fire and Water do. The afformentioned sun has all the Grass types and sand surprisingly has the most variety. Rain admittedly suffers a similar fate as snow but makes up for it with the abundance of Water type Pokemon with Swift Swim. Snow/Ice just has nothing but frail users, no variety and nothing outside of the Ice type that benefits from snow, there's no Solar Beam equivalent and there aren't any boosting moves that change within Snow. I do hope Gamefreak give more love to Snow within the future installments, changing it from Hail to Snow and introducing the defense boost was an amazing addition for Ice types, they just need a bigger push.
Ehhh…the solar beam equivalent would be blizzard, a 110 bp move that hits both opponents with a 10% to freeze which now can’t miss. Snow also has its own dedicated screen in aurora veil with no other equivalent. Also slush rush exist. Sure its distribution isn’t as much as swift swim but it isn’t as if it’s uncommon and it is an equivalent. Theres also snow cloak. It sounds like you’re asking for it to be more like sun/rain but its equivalent is meant to be sand. If you ask me, snow has plenty of variety and is just fine. The problem is really the ice type itself. Boosting the defenses of the poorest defensive typing in the game kinda makes it feel more underwhelming than it actually is
I love running hisui lilligant in singles, i picked it up in a draft league and its my Pokemon with the second most KOs due to chlorophyll + victory dance. It could also run hustle although chlorophyll is much better especially on sun teams
If Meganium had chlorophyll, it still wouldn't be too viable - even *Sunflora* functions as a better sweeper than it, and that hurts. It's my fave starter, but it needs a lot of help to be good
I always thought it was great that weathers have mechanics that benefit more than just their core types. Sandstorm has multiple types that aren't hurt by it, so they naturally share the benefit of chip damage against their opponents. Sun lets Solar moves charge instantly while Rain makes Thunder and some Flying moves 100% accurate, and they weaken Water/Fire respectively to protect allies that are weak to them. All of them also have associated abilities that are distributed to mons of other types. All of that makes it possible to build a weather team with varied types, rather than having to hamstring yourself by going Monotype for a weather gimmick. Hail/Snow gets none of that though. Ice can't have nice things.
im still working on figuring it out entirely but i like sending out chlorophyll and photosynthesis mons, then swapping one out t1 for torkoal (either swapping the one that seems like itll be double targeted or swapping the one thats less effective against the mons on the field). probably not the Best idea since t1 switchout is... something... but ive also found its a fun way to combat opposing weather strats unless theyre move setters instead of ability based ones.
I wish Pokémon had a "Universal abilities" mechanic, similar to How grass types are immune to powder moves, making some abilities be innate to the pokémon type would be really cool Like every grass type having chrolophyl, every fire type having flash fire etc
Just wish that Flash fire and Flame body had effects under the sun too. Just imagine Flash Fire boosting speed under sun and when hit by a fire move, increases attack by one stage instead of increasing the next fire mive by 1.5x damage. How many would be more interesting with these changes?
Chlorophyll is great, but sometimes I wish some of the Chlorophyll mons got different Abilities. Bellossom could use an ability like Flower Veil to have use in both Doubles and Singles outside of being a worse Vileplume (who is a worse Venusaur). Leavanny, Leafeon, Tropius, and Shiftry could all use Sharpness to fit their usage of sharp leaves to slash at enemies; albeit they have Abilities besides Chlorophyll that can be replaced. Maractus should get Sand Rush or a similar Ability instead of a sun-based Ability, being a desert mon and all. Exeggutor, while being one of the premier poster-children for Chlorophyll, could use a different sun-based Ability as of late: both the standard and Alolan form could make good use of Solar Power for extra power, for example. Chlorophyll is kind of bad on Sunflora, but honestly I can't think of an Ability that would really help it otherwise, since it already has access to Solar Power. Maybe a new Ability that combines Solar Power and Flash Fire, but I really doubt they'd make something like that _just_ for Sunflora... perhaps if Charizard and Heliolisk also got it, then there could be a chance?
Pokemon Company: *Sees mid grass type*
"This pokemon can fit so much chlorophyll in it!"

And then Meganium got Leaf Guard. I cri :(
