Poplar Creek Music Theater
Rock on
Never been to Polar Creek, sounds unbearably cold. But Poplar Creek is a whole different story.
These were pretty decent shows. The band had played Alpine the previous three years, but since Madison was a few days before, the gave Poplar Creek a try. Not a bad venue, but the cops were working the heads over pretty well in the nearby neighborhoods. Hoffman Estates is a well heeled uppity town, remember. Three people parachuted in, I think they got arrested too. Maybe why the boys never played there again.
It rained during the day, but stopped late in the afternoon. Barry Manilow had been there the night before, I remember the staffers commenting on the difference in the crowd. (Ya think?)
We stayed in a nearby hotel, and after the show, we used the pool to cool off. My friend Myles banged his head during a dive that required a trip to the local and rather quiet emergency room for stitches. We sat in the waiting room trying to act straight in front of two cops who were eyeing us the entire time. The cops were waiting for some other injured head that they had just arrested.
All things said, these were enjoyable shows. Jerry had really ballooned up and his voice was affected by whatever he was smoking. This run from the East Coast turned out to be pretty much the end of my touring days. Not a bad way to end it, most of the shows were solid.
Could have been my first show but I did not want to see the dead, if I only knew I could have got on the bus earlier
