This is one of the best routines by ANY comedian. I have watched it for years. She is so perfect in her accent and character. Thank you for the insight on Vietnamese culture. That is very helpful.
Anjelan sounds so much like my neighbor. Tina is from Vietnam and she got out just before Saigon fell. I have lived 1 door down from her for over 30 years. She has a hair salon and she is the kindest person I know. When my kids were growing up she would cut their hair for free. She made them look so pretty for the school dances and other events.

I used to own a hair salon with nail and pedicure stations and this skit by Anjelah Johnson is simply hilarious. Can't tell you how many times we watched this, but it was a lot.
This clip was Angelah Johnson's big break when it went viral on YT. SO glad you featured it and provided your cheerful perspective 😄 Luv you and Angelah (a.k.a. Bon Qui Qui)! 😍😍😍
But going viral 14 years later is unexcusable . It's because she's Latina if you ask me Hollywood is racist towards Latino people ...I've seen it ,I did stand up there for 3 and 1/2 years
I watched that video from Angela Johnson 10 years ago and was ROFLOL! She is hilarious and her Viet accent is dead on. Watched it again last week and still laughing. 🤣🤣🤣
I worked with many people from Vietnam Nam during my career with a municipal government (city) and they were all such lovely, nice and sweet people. They are a wonderful addition to our country.
I think this is so great to hear your reaction! I've loved this bit of Angela's for years. My grandparents had neighbors who were Vietnamese refugees and we all just loved them. They were so fun and kind. Every time I hear Angela do this bit it reminds me of those happy times. Best wishes, love and peace to all!! I really enjoyed the explanation of your language. Thank you!!
You are soo adorable & cheerful I loved your reaction & explanation about rules in the Vietnamese language. I LOVE the Vietnamese culture, people & food. I knew Anjelah Johnson from our large multicultural church in San Jose California, Jubilee. She was super sweet & it is so rare for anyone to BE in comedy especially a woman I recall her telling me she was doing comedy & I was surprised. I am sure we probably went to the same nail salons in San Jose, Ca. During my time in San Jose I had the opportunity to sing for the City of San Jose & I got to meet some wonderful people in the Vietnamese community which is not small. I was invited to be interviewed by a handsome reporter on Saigon Tv with my beautiful sweet friend, H.G Nguyen, the head of the Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce in SJ. in 2001. The talk show host was very warm, sweet & expressed that beautiful charm that you explained in your review above. He taught me a few words in Vietnamese & asked me “IF you had a Vietnamese Boyfriend what would I say to him?”My answer was something like “ Em u En” I know it isn’t correct spelling but you get what I mean ;) I am so happy to see you here on UA-cam & appreciate your presence ;) Keep up all the fun content please ;)
I love Vietnamese people so please don't take it personal We're in 2023 we all people talk about all other nationals people Sometimes it's lack of respect to talk other languages with customers. It's lack of respect. Love my my Vietnamese friends ❤
My wife, sisters-in-law, and some family friends are all in cosmetology (mostly nails) in Arlington, Texas. Angela Johnson is a hit no matter how many times you see the skit.
You have an excellent and sweet attitude. It can be difficult to not offend others when we delve into doing accents, etc. I'm African-American & have lived in both California & Vietnam so I know that her accent & showing the friendliness of the Nail Salon ladies was spot-on! I didn't laugh at the people but at the accuracy of the accent & attitude. Anyone who knows Vietnamese people in depth has to admire your good points: family loyalty, fun loving, loving to laugh, great culinary heritage, great at goal setting & reaching goals, loving your own culture. Those values are wonderful for everyone to adopt. 😊💐💐
That is the best depiction of Westminster Vietnamese nail salon culture I have ever seen. I have lived for 30 years in the Orange County and Long Beach area, always around many, many Vietnamese people. I have never seen a very good imitation of Vietnamese people by any American white or Latino male or female, until now. And this was 14 years ago. Thanks for reviewing. I would have never guessed you are Vietnamese, but you are a very good sport.
I work with Vietnamese nail techs, this is spot on! Sometimes I bust out laughing at work when someone says a line from her skit unintentionally, it really is how they talk to you❤️
I have watched this for 14 years and never knew it was crystal gel. 😃(Can you tell I never get my nails done) thank you for clearing that up for me! I get mani-pedis occasionally and I love the pampering! One lady is doing my nails, one is doing the pedicure, and another is massaging my shoulders. I can’t really afford to, but I tip very well. So everyone’s happy!
Really hilarious, I lived in Vietnam with my husband & two young daughters, while my hubby was assigned by US agriculture dept. there. Vietnamese are friendly.
Glad you liked her bit. I appreciate your explanation of the singular usage within the language. I knew that it existed but didn’t know what it was called. Also Anjelah Johnson grew up in San Jose California and there’s a large Vietnamese community down there. I’m in San Francisco and we have a large Vietnamese community as well. It wasn’t surprising to me when she said the things that she said in the way that she said them. I was totally blown away though by her accent! I thought it was pretty good too!
I love Anjelah and the nail shop . the sweet ladies she talks about ,are pretty spot on, my nail tech called me Momma after the first time i went in with my daughter.. Your reaction was excellent. You actually discussed the routine, added info that I didn't know, etc. Too many "reaction" videos don't really have any thing to add to make them worth watching. Kudos!
Haven’t seen Angela Johnson’s act in so long. Loved seeing it again and your reaction to it! I get my haircut by this little old lady who came here to the states from Vietnam in the 70’s. She loves to tell me stories about growing up in Saigon and how much it has changed since she left. Love her to pieces. 🥰
What a fun reaction video! I’ve seen Anjelah Johnson’s routine before, and it was great to see your take on it! I have never been in a nail salon as a client (I was a nail tech for many years), but your explanation of why they ask questions clarifies why my Vietnamese 8th grade students always asked me questions about what I like, where I live, etc!
I love this person for not being offended but relating and laughing. We need more of this in society. The comedian wasn't doing it to offend anybody and her skits are clean. Love them both
Hi Van, I just picked up your notification & this is so funny I laughed all through it because it is "spot on" with my experiences in Melbourne, Australia. As a 65-72yo I have been going to different Vietnamese salons & massage shops, the best regular one for my haircut & sometimes pedicure, and allow myself to be upsold when I have time for more pampering. The Vietnamese young ladies are so funny with their enquiring chat which I love to play up to. I hope after lockdown these businesses open up again, because they are quite cheap too.
i watch this original once a year at least, so funny....the first time my daughter who is now 17 when to the nail salon she come out and said "omg, now I know what is so funnny" hahaha I just told her "you so priddy like model, cheerleader, sumting priddy.."
Love your take on this. I recently had a similar experience in a nail salon. This is hysterical. The people in the salon were so nice. Such a great culture!!
I lived in Vietnam for 6 years. One of the things I love most is that Vietnamese people have a great sense of humor. I never had to worry about being accused of cultural appropriation if I wore an Ao Dai, or being accused of racism if I poked fun at some of the things I found funny about Vietnamese culture. Now I'm looking for a new country to live in and explore, but Vietnam feels like home. If I had to choose between living in the US or Vietnam for the rest of my life, I'd choose Vietnam for sure!
@thanh nguyen I am. But I reeeaaaallly miss the toilets in Vietnam, or more specifically, the bum guns. When I find a new place, I'm having one installed for sure. Also, I now travel with house slippers. Vietnam has made me more civilized.
@@lindsaygoodwin3140 Vietnamese tend to be very tolerant towards foreigners because of their hospitality. We are not so easily offended like "some other countries"
@@MeowTX Exactly. Though I do have to say, in my experience, Vietnamese people are probably not judged as harshly, or spoken negatively about as often as "some other countries." Sometimes when people are easily offended, it's because they've delt with too many people trash talking their country. Similarly, the Vietnamese people in really touristy areas are less tolerant of foreigners than Vietnamese people where there are few, if any, tourists, because they've had to deal with too many shitty tourists.
The first time I visited a nail salon (ever) in Washington state my sisters made me watch this video. I laughed but was so unsure about accuracy. It was exactly what happened and we had a blast at the nail salon!!
I saw the “ Nail “ video by Anjehla and then saw this … I am so happy the Vietnam girl doing the video was not offended and found so much of it true to her own experiences … I’ve known Vietnamese people all my life from a kid in grade 4 to those friends and more coming into my life … and yes I always get asked “ you find a woman yet Trevor ??” … and I get it from my Italian friends … my Portuguese friends … everyone wants you in a relationship to go to marriage … lol … I’m just happy that this simple humor did not offend anyone because it seems like we can’t joke nowadays without being called RUDE or DEROGATORY or RACIST when it’s really just harmless simple humor … LOVE Anjelha and love the reviewer … let’s just have a laff and some humor in our lives and maybe it’ll make the world a better happier place … peace and love to all the different nationalities in the world … from 🇨🇦 .. 💯❤️🤙🙏🦋
Thank you for showing the World (especially the US) how to enjoy (and not get triggered by) a great video (even 15 years later) that addresses cultural nuances. The Vietnamese (and most Asians BTW) are very warm and embracing. They bridge the cultural divide quickly and do not seem to be burdened by the differences. This is how the World should be!
I've followed Anjelah for years! Her best friend growing up was Vietnamese & if memory serves that friend's family owned a nail salon and Anjelah visited it frequently. Anjelah has a series of videos on her UA-cam channel that explains how she wrote her jokes & this joke is one she explains. It's been a couple years since I saw that video but I'm pretty sure her friend's family owned a salon so Anjelah spent a lot of time there. Ps. Her Bon Qui Qui character is hilarious! And the music video she did of going to a Vietnamese nail salon to see Tammy was hilarious!
Hahaha my barber lady is Vietnamese, and the very first thing she asked me, before she even asked how I want my hair, was if I have a wife. I go back to her only 2 or 3 times a year (I rarely get hair cuts) and she amazingly does remember me and my name. I find that shocking.
Vietnamese (especially ladies) tend to ask personal questions to show that they care. Or she might think you are good looking and wanted to match up you with some lady lol

Thank you for being a great sport! I ASSumed it was going to go in another direction. The 1st time I listened to Angelah I was rolling! Thanks for the clarification. Vietnamese folks are hard working, friendly people!
I think that she makes a very good impression on Vietnamese accent, specially on the missing letters.I think she is not making it with the intention to offend,so it's ok from my point of view
I love how you explained the grammar. Many nail in Vietnamese v. nails in English. In Italian there is most often an "a," "e", "o," or "i" at the end of words and people don''t understand that. Grazie!
Thanks for your explanations. Also glad you were not offended. A Vietnamese couple have a nail salon in my building and they are sweet but very honest!!
What the pho, you took Anjelah's acting with a good sense of humor. Love your reaction! I heard by the mouth of Anjelah that many Vietnamese people didn't like her make fun of them.
I went to an Anjelah Johnson just for this routine. Hilarious. In an interview, Anjelah said she sometimes did not do this routine for all her stand-ups for personal and professional reasons. One time some women went up to Anjelah after her show and told Anjelah how upset they were for driving from many miles away just to hear her Vietnamese nails routine and missing out on it. After that, Anjelah realized that the show is really about her fans and the audience and no matter how tired she is of doing that routine, she will always do it for her loyal fans. Anjelah gets it. The rest of her routine is just average, but as a comedian if you have only one really good bullet in your gun, this is a great bullet to have. She can retire rich on one routine. Most comedians don’t even have one good bullet. Good for her.
I’m male and don’t get my nails done, but I’ve had more than one Vietnamese stylist cut my hair. They always ask me about my wife (or always fishing to check if I have a wife). It’s hilarious. I’ve always wondered what exactly was the nature of their curiosity. I wasn’t offended at all; it was entertaining.
Oh man, that reminds of when I was in college many years ago. I went to get a haircut at this Viet place and this one lady 8-10 years older than me cut my hair. Afterwards, she gave me the salon’s business card to with her name on it. After I went back to my dorm room, I looked at the back of the card and saw that she wrote her personal phone number on the back. I was a freaked out 22yo, lol.
They asked coz they wanted to match you up with their female friends/sisters/cousins. Also it’s a compliment they do that coz they think you’re good looking lol
Anjelah Johnson's accent is so spot on, plus it changes to match the emotional changes in the conversation as irritation rises and falls. It's utterly eerie how accurate the accent is with all the myriad of inflections she inserts when needed. This accent is so difficult for English speakers and yet Angelah nails it o effortlessly. What an incredible vocal talent. Plus she's utterly gorgeous to boot. Not that she needs her looks. Just an added plus. Her nail salon video is now at 37 million views! That should pay for a decent house|!

I worked with many Vietnamese people. They were all nice to me and I can say I loved them all. One time I forgot my wallet and was not gonna eat lunch. One of them came to me at the table I was sitting on. He asked me if I was gonna eat. I said no because I forgot my wallet. Well they would all sit together and eat together sharing a lot of food they would all bring together. He went back and they made me a plate. I was happy because of that, that they did that for me. The food was great and they even bought me a soda. :)
I love the Vietnamese culture, I would never forget I had to escort this woman to the hospital she spoke no English, I sat with her helped her do her paperwork and to wait for her interpreter. I understood nothing she was saying she didn't even understand me but she was so grateful and the feeling was mutual.

I love Vietnamese people! I had the pleasure of knowing an elderly Vietnamese woman, she was such a beautiful soul. Her home cooking was out of this world! Wherever she is today, god bless her soul.
I used to own a hair salon with nail and pedicure stations and this skit by Anjelah Johnson is simply hilarious. Can't tell you how many times we watched this, but it was a lot.
I spent 4 months in Vietnam between 2004-05 and loved it, the people were great, so friendly.
This clip was Angelah Johnson's big break when it went viral on YT. SO glad you featured it and provided your cheerful perspective 😄 Luv you and Angelah (a.k.a. Bon Qui Qui)! 😍😍😍
It was all down hill after this!
Bon Qui Qui! 👌
But going viral 14 years later is unexcusable . It's because she's Latina if you ask me Hollywood is racist towards Latino people ...I've seen it ,I did stand up there for 3 and 1/2 years
@@smileybubbles9894 I honestly think she never came up with other material.
Um. No..she was always doing skits. You just heard of her on here.
She’s able to recognize the subtlety of the subject’s interaction and emphasize that to make it funny. I think that’s the sign of a great comedian.
I watched that video from Angela Johnson 10 years ago and was ROFLOL! She is hilarious and her Viet accent is dead on. Watched it again last week and still laughing. 🤣🤣🤣
Wow...one of the best Vietnamese accent comedy ever! I can't believe I never heard about this video until now.
He taught me a few words in Vietnamese & asked me “IF you had a Vietnamese Boyfriend what would I say to him?”My answer was something like “ Em u En” I know it isn’t correct spelling but you get what I mean ;)
I am so happy to see you here on UA-cam & appreciate your presence ;)
Keep up all the fun content please ;)
That solidifies her comedic career.
I love Vietnamese people so please don't take it personal
We're in 2023 we all people talk about all other nationals people
Sometimes it's lack of respect to talk other languages with customers. It's lack of respect.
Love my my Vietnamese friends ❤
That was so funny, I’m so glad you broke it down for us. That’s how we learn about each other’s culture. I love your sense of humor.
She had a friend's mom who mostly spoke Vietnamese and they helped her with the accent.😇
Whenever I got to a Vietnamese nail salon for a clean up near my home they are so hospitable and very clean. And yes the pedicure chair is awesome! 😎
I think she referenced lacquer gel 4:07
Really hilarious, I lived in Vietnam with my husband & two young daughters, while my hubby was assigned by US agriculture dept. there. Vietnamese are friendly.
Lol I loved this clip by her. Her accent is on point!!
Sounds like a mixture of Thai to me.
If you guys have not seen joe joys how to tell Asians apart, check it out. His Vietnamese accent is great and his interpretation is hilarious!
@@lunluong4235 Yes. Southern Vietnamese speak sounds like Cambodia and Thai.
Loved this my daughter and I go to a Vietnamese salon, and this was spot on, fantastic experience every time,
I love Anjelah and the nail shop . the sweet ladies she talks about ,are pretty spot on, my nail tech called me Momma after the first time i went in with my daughter.. I love that 15 years ago we could love and laugh at our selves. I love the comments. the ladies at the spa thought she was so funny..
i live in “east side san jose” where Anjelah grew up and created this skit… this “impression” is pretty spot on. i saw her live also and it was hilarious. happy you reacted to this video Van. enjoy
She's got the accent nailed down.First time I've seen this, hilarious!
I love their cool marketing skills, some of the questions are to make your stay therapeutic
I love this person for not being offended but relating and laughing. We need more of this in society. The comedian wasn't doing it to offend anybody and her skits are clean. Love them both
It depends on how they do it and what they say
Hi Van, I just picked up your notification & this is so funny I laughed all through it because it is "spot on" with my experiences in Melbourne, Australia. As a 65-72yo I have been going to different Vietnamese salons & massage shops, the best regular one for my haircut & sometimes pedicure, and allow myself to be upsold when I have time for more pampering. The Vietnamese young ladies are so funny with their enquiring chat which I love to play up to. I hope after lockdown these businesses open up again, because they are quite cheap too.
HAHA, I'm glad you liked it! And yes, hopefully things will go back to normal soon
i watch this original once a year at least, so funny....the first time my daughter who is now 17 when to the nail salon she come out and said "omg, now I know what is so funnny" hahaha I just told her "you so priddy like model, cheerleader, sumting priddy.."
So true!! I love every Vietnamese person I've ever met.....super friendly.... Best ppl ever. ❤
Love your take on this. I recently had a similar experience in a nail salon. This is hysterical. The people in the salon were so nice. Such a great culture!!
This was wonderfully joyful to watch! 💜💜💜 Saw this standup routine MANY years ago and I don't think it will EVER lose it's comedic power! 😂
I WOULD LOVE to travel to Vietnam. When people talk about where they would like to go, I say Vietnam. I get the strangest looks. Lol
@@imnottheone3707 May i ask why did they give you the strangest look? Honest question
It's easy to not get triggered when the material is so clearly affectionate.
Sometimes stuff is straight-up hateful, and it's fair to call it out.
I love your openness and sense of humor. AJ is one of my favorite comedians and has been for years. Love your channel and I love you. Thank you. 🎬❤️🥂
I have seen this before on a comedy channel. It is hilarious!! She is so good! This bit can never get tired for me.
That is one of my favorite skits she does and to see you laugh with us about it then explain certain points is quite refreshing. ❤
Van that was hilarious,Anjelan is to funny,I was lol through the whole vid and the crystal gel segment I lost it.Great vid girl-friend and Happy Trails!😉
I’m in Australia and my local nail place is similar. They know my name and are sooooo friendly. I love going there.
I always thought that was the nail techs way of asking acrylic or gel. I had no idea it was crystal gel, nice to know what she was actually saying. 😂🤣
I am too a Vietnamese nail tech (yes, i said “nail”). I love her! 75% of what she said is soooo true!
This reminded me of my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in my hometown, the owner lady was just like this, super friendly and helpful and we got to really like her over the years, she would always make us laugh when we would go see her. Man I miss that awesome food and hostess too!
She's from the Bay Area, and has always had friends of all different cultures - much like rest of us from there. Thank you for your perspective and sense of humor.
Fellow bay arean: the two most ethnically diverse cities in the USA are here in the bay.
Love the Bay Area , us Latinos love pho 🍜
@@GREALER us Asians love tacos!!!
@@PurpleFlower22 Asians are awesome 🥰
I saw this a while back and sent the link to my Vietnamese hairstylist that I had for the last 18 years. This reminds me to follow-up with her. I'm glad that you were not offended.
I loved hearing your perspective on this - ❤❤You’re beautiful and from a beautiful culture…thank you for sharing this with us. 😊
Right, I always think they want me to
Thank you for being a great sport! I ASSumed it was going to go in another direction. The 1st time I listened to Angelah I was rolling! Thanks for the clarification. Vietnamese folks are hard working, friendly people!
My Vietnamese pedicurist has this memorized and thinks it's hilarious. We were laughing over it the other day.
Thank you so much for your sense of humor. ❤
Grazie!
This is like the 5th time I’ve watched this… I love Anjelah and her reacting to this!!!!🎉
More reaction videos!!!!😄
Yes, Vietnamese people are so friendly and real! Thank you for sharing a part of your culture with us. 😊
This is great. The sketch was funny and your explanation while not being offended is most excellent. You are awesome.
That’s how we can see you’re Vietnamese: “you don’t have to do pedicure…… but you should!” Great video thanks!
Thanks for your explanations. Also glad you were not offended. A Vietnamese couple have a nail salon in my building and they are sweet but very honest!!
I enjoyed your reaction very much. You are a real sweet hearted person. Bless you
Thank you for the input of someone’s personal experience even ethnicity of the stand up. 😊
What the pho, you took Anjelah's acting with a good sense of humor. Love your reaction! I heard by the mouth of Anjelah that many Vietnamese people didn't like her make fun of them.
We don't care....I'm vietnamese..only uptight people trip..life's too short.
she nailed it
I‘ve gone to a Vietnamese nail salon for years. I’m one of their frequent regulars and they are the absolute best! I love all my friends there.
👋, how are you doing today; how’s everything going; hope it was a blessed & lovely day for you Laura?
I love it because I love the extra friendliness and caring way they welcome you.
This reminds me of how Russell Peters rose to fame because of his “Indian parents beating their kids” routine so he still likes to do it years later.
She is much more than this one routine !
@@yuichituba I hope that you called that number, sir . I’m confident that she would’ve taught you a whole lot about… life. heheh.
@@pushslice creep 😒
They asked coz they wanted to match you up with their female friends/sisters/cousins. Also it’s a compliment they do that coz they think you’re good looking lol
They love to do match making. If they ask, it means they think you are a good candidate for a friend or a relative.
This cracks me up every time. I LOVE my Vietnamese nail tech. I have gone to her and her sister for YEARS. They seriously make the experience.
I laughed so hrd im crying real tears. I love the vietnamese people warm & loving good food and excellent coffee!!
Love you! From Việt Nam 🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳
That was absolutely wonderful reaction vid. I love Anjelah . . . she makes me love so hard. You are beautiful inside and out and thanks for describing your take and sharing the cultural perspective regarding the humor content. Stay strong, be well.
The world needs more people like you
I love the nail salon bit and enjoyed your review, especially the cultural insights. Thanks!
I saw this several years ago and never get tired of this. The gal doing the reaction is such a sweet young lady. It's great that Anjelah does humor Without any profanity whatsoever...
Hi Van, I'm a Vietnamese and I use your videos for learning English because they're very interesting for learning purpose, I always wait for your new videos
