Time Team S18-E02 Saxon Death, Saxon Gold

  • Tony Robinson takes his merry band of archaeologists to Leicestershire to investigate life and death in Anglo Saxon Britain. The Team are intrigued by metal detecting finds and pottery scattered across the fields, which suggest they're on the site of a high-status Anglo Saxon burial ground.
    By the end of the first day there's no sign of a cemetery, in spite of the evidence. But all that changes the next morning with a flurry of activity revealing burials, cremations and a glimpse of gold. Days of frantic digging reveal every type of Anglo Saxon burial - and perhaps the finest piece of jewellery ever discovered on Time Team.
    And the Team explore the unique way the Anglo Saxons celebrated their dead, when one brave digger stands in for a dead Anglo Saxon on a funeral pyre, in a fiery recreation of a cremation.

    One of the things I absolutely loved about Mick and the other archaeologists - they never seemed to be jaded by their work. The stunned looks and voices of hushed wonder as He and Phil were watching the broach being worked on in the conservation lab says it all!
    RIP, Mick!

    Throughout this episode, the archaeologists displayed wonder, awe, and reverence for what they are uncovering. I'm filled with awe and wonder as they kneel beside the grave of the two people and as they sing and read the oration to honor Raksha. Thank you for displaying such care and delight about the ancestors. And a shout-out to Helen for her view of the way a Romano-Brit maybe decided to cast off the toga, put on trousers, and move into a wood home. Stunning. Thank you.

    I watch and re-watch the Time Team episodes. I never find them boring. I never get tired of watching the team discovering the archaeological evidence and making sense of what happened at each site (even though I know what is going to happen). I know there were critics of the Time Team series when it was being made. There were even a few critics who took cheap shots at Professor Mick Aston! YIKES!!!! Totally uncalled for, IMHO. I think Time Team did more in 20 years to further the archaeological knowledge base of UK's history (in a professional manner, too) than just about all the grant-funded academic research of the last 100 years. I might be exaggerating, but I hope I've made my point. I love Time Team, and miss it...and Mick...and Phil....and Robin....and Matt....and Helen....and everyone....except Tony (not so much....sorry, Tony, but you just come across as a pompous axx).

    "Women with spears" isn't such a wild thing. There's all those songs/tales/sagas of shield maidens. Over in Ireland, there's a king that made a law the said warrior training for women was no longer *mandatory* in the 400s. So, that implies that women weren't just trailing the men finishing off the wounded. They weren't dainty little Victorian/Edwardian types either.

  • @a.westenholz4032
    @a.westenholz4032 4 роки тому +7

    Much as enjoyed this episode, I seem to recall another earlier episode of Anglo-Saxon graves where they did find women buried with spears and (I think, though much more in doubt) shields. And it wasn't just one, but several. So this whole thing of thinking that it can't be a woman because of the spear, especially if they are early Anglo-Saxon (pre-Christian), just seems to me a fallacy. That we are assuming too much from something that perhaps is generally true to be always true. That for all we know with some tribes and people it was more common than others for some few women to be warriors and leaders than with others, and so in some grave sites a few women will be buried with spears while not in others.

    • @2CraftySeniors
      @2CraftySeniors 4 роки тому +5

      I agree. I think there had to have been tribes or clans in which the women could choose their 'career' (and mate) and being a warrior was just fine for whoever wanted to be one... and that men didn't necessarily have to be warriors as well.

      There was a program recently out of Norway, or some other Scandinavian country, where a warrior had been uncovered that ultimately turned out to be female. They had another look at some other warrior burials and they also turned out to be female. It was realized that sex bias played a big part in determining whether or not women played a part in warfare.

    Kinda confused here, in one of the earlier seasons they dug up alot of saxon graves including women with weapons which Helen said was totally possible because in history there where Queen Cartumandua, Boudicca etc, now in this episode she says the spear wouldnt be in there if its a womans grave...puzzling.

    • @georgedorn1022
      @georgedorn1022 3 роки тому +1

      Cartimandua and Boudicca lived during the early Romano-British period so a few hundred years before the Saxons. Anglo-Saxon women were often buried with a knife but this was probably more a tool than a weapon.

    • @yvonnethompson844

      The time frame of 3 days gives the investigators the chance to go back to their other jobs and often the sites are taken over by local teams depending on the importance of the site.

    • @MrTg200
      @MrTg200 10 років тому +17

      You are quite correct. However, Time Team serves the function of a 'finder' team. They determine whether a site merits further investigation. If it does, then regular archaeologists take over and do a proper job. Where I live, there are Paleoamerican sites. Whenever a construction job is proposed, a similar team checks to see if anything important is at risk. So the concept is hardly unique to Time Team. Personally I quite enjoy this series.

    • @robertwbraiden
      @robertwbraiden 10 років тому +6

      MrTg200 Time Team can best be described as evaluation-archaeology. Pretty much most of the sites they have dug have warranted further investigation but it is rare for a local group to quickly take over the site. In the vast majority of cases the trenches that Time Team have dug are simply filled in at the end of the three days. Putting together a team of archaeologists, historians, geo-physics experts et al is an expensive and time consuming prospect and if a Time Team site were to be further investigated, it could take months or even years for a follow-up excavation. Like I said, most Time Team sites are closed down at the end of the dig.

      "And again a dig that shouldn't be done in three days time !"
      The purpose of the dig was to evaluate if it needs protection or not. In the Wessex Arcaeology report they conclude that Area 1 has been "extensively robbed and plough-damage[d]". They alos write in the report that "the 6th century, potentially mixed-rite, [Anglo-Saxo] cemetery in Area 2 is of considerable regional significance" but also notice it has been badly plough-damaged. They recommend a protection or management plan for the whole site.

      Hi Kerry, They didn't run out of trees, woodland was very well managed during this period as it had been since the Bronze Age, a process known as "coppicing". Even though many of the great forests were cleared as agriculture grew there was never a point where this became a significant problem except on one or two now barren islands around the UK even though in relevant terms most of the U.K. was cleared of trees enough was left to supply firewood and building materials. Woodland and forests are still heavily managed today. Burial and cremation practices change over time because of outside influences, migration and the effect of changes in religion.

    • @emsnewssupkis6453
      @emsnewssupkis6453 8 років тому +5

      They did strip the woods.
      The Normans revived the forests for hunting purposes and peasants were severely punished if they went and pulled down trees, etc. They were allowed to pick up branches on the ground which led to cheating by pulling off branches but if caught doing this, you might lose a limb or eye or something.
