Guilty Gear is like that Underground Garage Band that's so good that only word of mouth made it bigger. With Daisuke Ishwatari's beautiful artwork, music score and voice acting- this franchise became a phenomenon in fighting game circuits and overtime has become quite the standout hit! Even today, Arc system works and artistic wizards behind the games, have further pushed the visual envelope with Dragon Ball FIGHTERZ, Granblue Fantasty VS, Blaze Blue Vs, Persona 4 Arena, Guilty Gear XRD & Sign!
Really hoping this series gets the love and crowd that it deserves because honestly there's so much love poured into absolutely every title in the Guilty Gear series- I just hope strive doesn't create too much controversy.. Once people figure out the general game flow and the new dash arcs, they will still have a lot of fun.
He also forgot to mention how much Samurai Spirits clearly inspired this series. From the weapon based 2-D fighting, to even some of the character designs being used as a reference point.
Without even watching the video. I think everyone here can agree on one thing.....that the GG series has some of the best music in any video game series, by far. It's actually kinda what sold me on the series tbh, which should tell you all you need to know about just how good the soundtrack is.
Guilty Gear is the game that made me really appreciate fighting game music. And knowing the influences the game took from various musicians, bands and songs made me love the game even more. I'm just sad that he didn't talk about the music in the video.
Now this series is something. It has to be one of the most interesting and stylistic fighting games I've ever seen. I've only played the gba one but gee this series is really unique. This should be an eye opener to many people wanting to get into the series.
I'm so happy that you're finally covering Guilty Gear. I'm a recent fan of the series but it became my favorite fighting game series because how great it is.
The original game had a dark edge that all of the sequels, lack. The roster & hidden, playable characters feel perfect. It's been re-released for current consoles, too. This game blew me away when I 1st played the import, back in it's day.
I remember discovering this game in 1999, and I was instantly a fan. the music and the characters had me sold. I remember seeing in magazines that the 2nd game in the series (Guilty Gear X)was releasing on the Dreamcast in japan and was rumored to not make it over to the US. So I quickly imported the game and loved every moment of it. to this day I am a Guilty Gear fan, listening to the music and playing every game and loving all but one title (that abomination on the DS). I even got into the Beta for Strive and while there were issues, I trust they will be resolved before the game's release.
From my experience: there wasn't an arcade version, so the hardcore never cared about this game. This is also why Super Street Fighter HD Remix never took off (despite being excellent).
At last, you've finally put out a video on this game! This game series is really something quite special. And undeniably, it has quite the fast-paced gameplay, complemented by eccentric characters and a killer heavy metal soundtrack. The Guilty Gear series has some of the best soundtracks of all time, hands down.
One big reason I fell for the series was both it's distinct feel and heavy metal attitude as well as smooth controls that felt responsive rather than the more tank like controls of Street Fighter. And the impact it had is astounding, creating a whole sub-genre of fighters with a distinct feel and way to play. Now let's just hope that the series hasn't lost it's distinct spirit in the name of trying to appeal to everyone with Strive when it releases.
First time playing guilty gear was Guilty Gear X2 in arcade probably 2005. Fell in love immediately with how strange the characters were and how amazingly fast the fighting was.
Yeeeahhh Guilty Gear!!! We used to rent the Sega Dreamcast with my friends(when came out back in the day) and play Guilty Gear all the night in the weekends that way i was introduced to this franchise. Years later i discovered a copy of the first Guilty Gear for Psx and i was amazed because dont know became first years afters . Loved the game instantly and still got the copy of the game. An excelent and challenging fighting game! I cant remember the amount of times i got beat em by Justice!!! Greetings and hope you and your family are fine!!
I remember back around Christmas '03 when my aunt got me Guilty Gear Advance for my Gameboy. I was blown away, never seen a fighting game like it before. It was so unique to me, each character was unforgettable (along with the music, of course), and everything felt so electrifying and refreshing. That's when I first fell in love with the series
I've been waiting for this moment since 97 when I first saw GG in an article in GameInformer while working at a super market. I just knew one day the internet would grow, UA-cam would come to be, and TopHat would review them. You have not disappointed.
I remember seeing an ad for the original Guilty Gear in a game magazine I brought back in ‘98 as a kid and thought it was the sickest shit ever, and knew I had to have it. This first game is a little rough around the edges tho and broken gameplay wise, still fun tho.
I initially didn't get into Guilty Gear because I saw it as just another Street Fighter clone that was late to the game(as in years after the big 2D fighting game industry rush). When I did play it(Guilty Gear X) I was pleasantly surprised by how well it played. The art style was unique, the graphics super high res, and the soundtrack excellent. The fact that it is still going strong after 20 years speaks volumes. Good work @TopHatGamingMan
This really takes me back. I used to be an absolute beast with Sol Badguy, Faust, Potemkin, Ky Kiske, and Jam. I liked to try to keep myself well rounded. On a related note, the mangaka for Elemental Gelage was apparently friends with one of the artists for Guilty Gear and asked if he could borrow some design elements for his manga. You can tell where the influences are just by looking at them.
Loved the video as a whole but i have to admit that i loved the longest "yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah... aaah!" ever on the channel! And i say it again, i love that i got to see a review from the game from our very own Top Hat Gamming Man
Kai Kiske. The first name is comes from Kai Hansen, the guitarist of Helloween, the last name comes from Michael Kiske. The vocalist for Helloween during their awsome Keeper of the seven keys era.
There is so much more to cover about GG, like the heavy metal influence, and the impact of XRD on other fighters like DB. Hopefully we can get a second part with gameplay other than PS1.
One of my most favorite fighting game franchises. The high entry level it requires to understand the franchise to its fullest is, understandably, very daunting, but once you get pass that it is such a rewarding series. In fact, you can probably say that about the vast majority of fighting game franchises.
I love these weekly videos helps me decide which old fighting game to play next. Time to dig out gg from the box of ps1 games. been playing Samurai shodown 3 on ps1 lately love that game look forward to someday you doing a video on that
Excellent, as always. GG1 has a special place in my heart. It was the first fighting game I ever played well enough to be a menace to my friends in high school.
I'm glad that Guilty Gear is getting attention today like it's the game that hooked me endlessly on my PSP which is Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus which is for me the best Guilty Gear that I played yet (I have yet to feel the magic of Guilty Gear Xrd and Strive) I hope you can cover BlazBlue aswell as it's like the half brother to Guilty Gear's
LOVELY VID MATE 🎩😄!!! You know by now that I love the sexy thumbnails haha😆! I had no idea about this game called “Bastards“ with it’s kick-ass cover-art 😝! Thanks for that one 😉👍! #LondonRealArmy
Guilty Gear is my favorite fighting game series, balls to the walls metal music, great character design. Even their move to 3d art style they still have the sprite based feel unlike how the street fight series went. I personally think street fighter hit its apex with SF Alpha 3 mechanics wise, I think 4 and 5 have been prettier but lesser versions of the game and Guilty Gear became my fighting game of choice, BlazBlue was nice (made by the same team) but Guilty Gear still holds a nice place in my heart. No other 2d fighting series has yet to capture high speed fighting like this series (I lump BlazBlue and Dragon Ball Fighterz in with this series as it is the same team). For me Arc Systems is the gold standard for 2d fighting games.
I played it a lot in 1998 on my PSOne. I remember having a lot of fun playing GG with my brother. I'm more a King of Fighters player, but it was a good surprise when I discovered this game. It's great to see that it continues his path today with so good new episodes.
I think what makes guilty gear so great is every character in it feels radically different! Never mind the idea of 'oh this dude's standing k is a round house and this other dude's a long reaching straight kick'. The entire sub style is like playing a completely different game! If you want variety in characters, Guilty Gear is like fine wine. And I think most people agree...Guilty Gear X2 is the best version. If you ever wondered how a single game engine could be bent so many ways to create fun to play characters, X2 is the game for you!
One more 'also'...The original game was released in arcades as well with extra frames of animation due to arcade RAM not being tied down to playstation RAM limitations. I've played multiple arcade machines of this game. They were quite rare and I'm not sure they were actually released in the states...(i'm from the states).
Thanks for doing this video! I never played the original Guilty Gear, having started with X instead. But the series really grew on me from there, and I'm glad it's getting more love in the West.
This is a HUGE surprise right here. I didnt love Guilty Gear as much as i did until a couple of years ago on christmas when i gotten Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 for PS4. I played Guilty Gear X2 and X2 Accent Core Plus on PSP in 2015 and the steam version in 2016 and loved those games but i didnt get hooked until Xrd came in my life. The characters are so cool and memorable, the story is actually very enjoyable, the fighting system is complex but deep as well, and one thing you forgot to mention, the music! The music made by the man himself (Daisuke Ishiwatari) is so fantastic! And I love how every character is a reference to some rock band or person of Rock Culture too (Looking at you Axl) This game is a pure masterpiece that definitely went overlooked.
Love ALL of your Videos. Please keep up the hard work great in depth stuff. Console and fighting game videos. You have a video on Mace: The Dark Ages? For N64
I found the original GG in late 1998 in the used game bin at Software Etc. I had no idea it even existed and I was a 2D fighting game fanatic!! It was so much fun and have been in love with the series ever since!! I couldn't believe someone actually traded it in so quickly! If only ArcSys made a Saturn version with 4MB RAM cart compatibility...🤤
Back in 2012 i bought 2 games from gamestop, house of the dead overkill-extended cut on ps3,& persona 4 arena also on ps3.i hadn't heard of arc system works up until that point.thx to that persona 4 fighting game,i did reasearch on arc system works & became a fan of guilty gear & blazblue
I beat this game my 1st try with every character. After that I put it the side. Funny I was just thumbing through my old games and laughed when I saw this. Pulled it out and played. I use it now to make custom action figures. Still an awesome play.
Who doesn't love guy gear? Great franchise I love it. Can't wait for the new game to come out. He should've talked about the many different version they came out with over the years I wonder what inspires that?
I actually loved this game, I do agree that fighting games should be complex enough, simplifying a fighting game is sucking the fun out of it...real fighting games fans would play the game for years...when you take away the learning curve they get boring real quick
Like I've said before , I am not a huge fighter fan but I owned a bunch like the Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat games on my SNES and Sega Genesis back in the 90's when they were very popular . I've half-heartedly play others through the years , but it was never my thing . Nevertheless , I find your videos on fighting games interesting and very informative . I watch them all and always learn something new . Maybe you could do a video on some of the terrible knock-offs that came out too . One that comes to mind is Star Wars : Masters Of Teras Kasi . I bought this game for my Playstation back in the day simply because I was a HUGE Star Wars fan and fighting games were popular at the time . I had a hard time admitting to myself that it was bad and I wasted what little money that I had at the time on it .
The first is still my favorite. Best 2D fighting game for the PS1, bar none. What a soundtrack as well. For many sequels after that it felt like the series fell victim of the same curse of "sameness" a lot of Street Fighter II iterations felt to me. But Xrd Revelator is amazing
The series got me into fighting games. The series is underrated as hell. Xrd rev 2 selling worse then crappier or unimpressive fighters that are out now speaks in volumes.
Loved the pace of the game. Was faster than samurai showdown, which i feel is more technical than combo heavy, but not crazy as a sped up sf alpha. you still had to be fast enough to execute your combos in GG, but you really felt those awesome animations and effects
OH YEAH it's hard. I first tried out the original PS1 disc last month and got stuck as Sol going against Ky, despite spending so much time in practice messing with the mechanics. It's brutal. But I WANT to get good at it. I remember seeing its EGM review back in 1998 and was intrigued ever since.
I was reading magazines close to when this game first released. I wanted it SO BAD. but I was poor back then. When I did get money in the years after that I just never got around to it. This means Xrd was my first Guilty Gear. I did finally get a few of the early games on steam a few years back.
Generally the first GG is not really considered a classic, but just as the point where the legacy started. It is actually broken as hell if you try to play it competily. The rise to fame and the absolut classic status basically came with GGXX#r, which was even regularly leading the Arcade charts in Japan and was celebrated for the extreme diversity in gameplay of its cast while being considered as one of the most balanced competitive fighting games at the time. Furthermore, the GGX(X) series was present with new instalments during the so called "dark ages" of fighting games (i.e. between SF3:3s and SF4). Plus it was one of the most influential fighting games, more or less founding the genre of "Anime Fighters". Not to forget that GGX was the first high res 2D fighting game ever.
Had this game within a week of it coming out took months to get good at and made my love of fighting games grow so much the instant kills were legit reasons people started breaking controllers. I put this as an equal to sf3 love Both of these for there specific ways they played, just got gg on steam a few weeks ago.
Guilty Gear... I was happy to play it back in it's days, and nowdays I can play it at any time I want on my Switch (I imported the Europe 20th Anniversary cart that also includes XX Accent Core Plus R), I hope more players can give the game a try.
The music sold me on it back in the day (Ishiwatari handled the compositions?), and that led me onto Symphony X and getting into metal for the second tine in my life and getting in crowd with fine as hell people.
Very happy to see this video; Thank you for this thorough look at a really impressive, original, 2D, PS1 fighter. 3rd request.... please do a video for the import-only, arcade/PS2 ArcSys fighter, Hokuto no Ken/Fist of the North Star. Thanks again, man.
Hey mr. Top hat if you want to talk about an obscure fighting game franchise you should look into the Bloody Roar series everyone has forgot about that it's been forever since we got a new game in the series
Guilty Gear is like that Underground Garage Band that's so good that only word of mouth made it bigger. He forgot to mention how heavy metal inspired the music, characters names and special moves in the game.
Not just heavy metal, but lots of music, Sol Badguy is a reference to Freddy Mercury. Which, a great choice.
Axl for example
Always room for more coverage. GG has a complex character, and story, with themes that could fill an episode in it's entirety..
Touché
I mean the music speaks for itself eh? :)
"Fighting games are too simplified and should be more complex" - Daisuke creator of guilty gear strive
Quotes that aged badly
Well he left to mechanics open ended it it doesn't exactly stop being deep just because it's simpler.
Talking about Guilty Gear without mentioning the soundtrack? BLASPHEMY!!!
How?????
@@GuiltyGearRockYou When?
He also forgot to mention how much Samurai Spirits clearly inspired this series. From the weapon based 2-D fighting, to even some of the character designs being used as a reference point.
I legit yelled "yeah!" outloud when I got the notification for this. Loved this game back in the day.

I've only played the gba one but gee this series is really unique.
This should be an eye opener to many people wanting to get into the series.
Please, play one of the main games. Is way more fun than the GBA version.
GGX on the GBA is pretty solid (like SFA on the GBC)
Daisuke was also a former SNK dev. He's another dev who left another fighting company that went on to make something special.
I'm so happy that you're finally covering Guilty Gear. I'm a recent fan of the series but it became my favorite fighting game series because how great it is.
likewise!
Any advice for another newbie regarding GG1? The reviewer Tophat cited about the enemy AI being 'fiendish' wasn't lying...
@@megagrey Kliff and Justice were vicious in the original GG 😥
I got into the series started with Xrd Sign. The lore is very complicated, but I like the story and gameplay.
The original game had a dark edge that all of the sequels, lack. The roster & hidden, playable characters feel perfect. It's been re-released for current consoles, too. This game blew me away when I 1st played the import, back in it's day.
The lore is EVERYWHERE. Has someone finally discovered who THAT MAN is? 😁
Not to mention the way the characters look and there animations are also pretty great
I remember discovering this game in 1999, and I was instantly a fan. the music and the characters had me sold. "Dai-soo-kee" C'mon man, like does that not sound off for you?
He's British. It's in his blood to mispronounce names.
It pains me how close, yet far it is
From my experience: there wasn't an arcade version, so the hardcore never cared about this game. This is also why Super Street Fighter HD Remix never took off (despite being excellent).
To be fair, it sold well, it just didn't see much play in the competitive scene.
At last, you've finally put out a video on this game!
This game series is really something quite special. And undeniably, it has quite the fast-paced gameplay, complemented by eccentric characters and a killer heavy metal soundtrack. The Guilty Gear series has some of the best soundtracks of all time, hands down.
Man you missed the most important thing! The epic unique guitar driven heavy rock music! Those are MASTERPIECES!
Wow, that's when the effects weren't so over the top you could actually see what was happening.
It flew under the radar and now is a cult classic on everyone's radar.
One big reason I fell for the series was both it's distinct feel and heavy metal attitude as well as smooth controls that felt responsive rather than the more tank like controls of Street Fighter. that year kof 98 was released, one of the best fighting games in history.
Best fighting game ever
I wouldn't put it pass Tekken or Street fighter tho, which I consider the best, but everybody has different opinions tho.👍🏼
America was still living under a rock while the rest of the world were enjoying that game.
Great game, part of a great serie, but not the best imo

I bought this game for my Playstation back in the day simply because I was a HUGE Star Wars fan and fighting games were popular at the time . I had a hard time admitting to myself that it was bad and I wasted what little money that I had at the time on it .
The first is still my favorite. Best 2D fighting game for the PS1, bar none. What a soundtrack as well. For many sequels after that it felt like the series fell victim of the same curse of "sameness" a lot of Street Fighter II iterations felt to me. But Xrd Revelator is amazing
I remember buying this game on 1999 and it makes my thumb...numb and hurts ha ha. Even KOF never makes me pushing buttons that hard
I loved this game. It was the first game I had for the PS.
I still have Guilty Gear for PS and I still love it!
Truly Awesome Game! ^.^
I am a proud winner of a Guilty Gear Turny It had 22 contestants and a top Prize of just 50 Bucks but it was my win and won handily with Milla Rage
Now it's been rereleased on Steam. I'll have to check it out.
I’d never heard of it until I came to Japan 🇯🇵
Daisuke Ishiwatari is a Fighting Game Genius!
Hey, Top Hat Gaming Man! In a future video, you should definitely review BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger.
now you'll have my subscription.
So have you got something to tell us about your voice over work??
Loved hearing you on myles powers channel 😂
You might as well feature Gundam Battle Assault 1 and 2 for the PSX next.
Guilty Gear X was my 1st foray into the franchise. I've been a fan ever since. My buddy started with the original, however.
Had this game within a week of it coming out took months to get good at and made my love of fighting games grow so much the instant kills were legit reasons people started breaking controllers. I put this as an equal to sf3 love Both of these for there specific ways they played, just got gg on steam a few weeks ago.
That was a really fun game, but the instakill skills were really frustrating to me.
Guilty Gear... I was happy to play it back in it's days, and nowdays I can play it at any time I want on my Switch (I imported the Europe 20th Anniversary cart that also includes XX Accent Core Plus R), I hope more players can give the game a try.
No mention of Heavy Metal?
Even Bastard is a Manga based on Heavy Metal.
I have one thing to say! Baiken walking forward!
In the top 5 fighting franchises of all time imo
Guilty Gear is an awesome fighting game all the different versions of it I love the anime art style of Guilty Gear it's a good damn game.
The music sold me on it back in the day (Ishiwatari handled the compositions?), and that led me onto Symphony X and getting into metal for the second tine in my life and getting in crowd with fine as hell people.
Nice video!
We need you to do a video on the soundtrack
I hope we get more Guilty Gear videos... one of my favorite fighters
Very happy to see this video; Thank you for this thorough look at a really impressive, original, 2D, PS1 fighter.
3rd request.... please do a video for the import-only, arcade/PS2 ArcSys fighter, Hokuto no Ken/Fist of the North Star. Thanks again, man.
hi tophatgamingman i love your vids so much your my fav retro gameing youtuber
Hey mr. Top hat if you want to talk about an obscure fighting game franchise you should look into the Bloody Roar series everyone has forgot about that it's been forever since we got a new game in the series
