Pro tip for removing battery adhesive: use alcohol for loosening the adhesive and use dental floss to cut the adhesive. This way, you don't risk heating up the battery and exploding. Make sure you wipe the powder on the floss to avoid a mess. You can still heat up the other side when the floss can't cut.
x220s are indeed a great choice. However if you can afford it there are definitely better choices, simply because their CPUs are archaic atp. As a thin terminal though.. haven't seen a better option yet.

This is why I have two ThinkPads. The older one, an e530 has replaceable batteries. The newer one, and e585, can be opened and the battery is replaceable.

I have a surface laptop 2 and it has a BIOS level option to keep the battery at a maximum of 50% for use cases where the device spends a majority of its time plugged in/docked. I do turn this off from time to time to allow it to get a full charge and then allow it to drain down to about 20%. Hopefully this helps extend the life of the battery long term.
Cycling the battery helped with nickel technology. Lithium batteries REALLY don't like to work. They don't like to be fully charged, i.e. at high voltage. They don't like carrying current, i.e being discharged, they don't like to be discharged fully. All these conditions make their chemisty age. The clock really starts ticking on them as soon as they leave the factory. The option to not fully charge the battery when operating plugged in is a really sensible feature. I wish more manufacturers would offer that. Remain at 50% when plugged in, then the night before you intend to use it offline ask for a full charge.
He said that the battery is dangerous if fully charged or fully discharged. I suppose that might only have been for long term storage, but I don't know.
While you mention Louis Rossman, I imagine you didn't see his video about his e-bike suddenly catching on fire and burning down his front door, because he bought some cheaper batteries when his preferred battery maker didn't have the ones he needed in stock.

Well, i found them and one was a little bit flappy, the other was more than twice its size, bulging like crazy :D Comparted to the ones in the video, those where flat. Time to burn them

I'm torn about the repairability of laptops as their size makes them more like smartphones. The form factor makes the surface unique, but the lack of upgradability or repairability due to integrating everything into the motherboard (just like a smartphone) makes me dislike laptops that use adhesive to seal their products.
You can thanks the Macbook Air for that. Before it, screws were the norm on laptops. Now that stupid thing became a model for the industry, so is adhesive everywhere. But what makes me mad is that building something thin is not to make them lighter, is just aesthetics. Thick lightweight laptops existed before the Air, and obviously overheating CPUs were not the norm. Heating issues, crap keyboards, upgrade-ability, repair-ability, all sacrificed on the worship altar to "Sir" Jony Ivy.

My surfacebook is not bloated yet... but i do need to replace the battery because it is no longer connecting in the screen section... If you need to do another one of these, you can simply pull to separate the halves. Since it's only an electromagnet and not a mechanical connection, you can simply pull hard to separate the screen without damaging anything.
I've accidently punctured the battery on one repair/mod for a cheap Chinese laptop and I can attest it will catch on fire if you aren't careful..im guessing you need to discharge and charge at least every couple of months to keep them from bloating?

Exactly as dangerous. They'll catch fire, and possibly explode, if the casing is ruptured. Note that for most batteries, the "puffed" part is actually the OUTER casing, and is a mixture of fluorine gas and other junk you really don't want to breathe in. If the INNER casing is ruptured and the outer casing also ruptures, you'll get a fire/explosion.
Wendell; any advice on how to find a source for reliable replacement batteries? I have an old HP laptop that (luckily) has a proper battery CARTRIDGE that can be swapped out in 10 seconds. I looked on Amazon and Ebay and found tons of places that sold them. But ALL of them seemed to have the same number of good and bad reviews, meaning it would be a total crap shoot wherever I bought one if it would be a good battery or not. Any suggestions?

Thank you for this video - it's extremely helpful. However, I guarantee that 95% of you will rip out the display connector cables which are located at the bottom of the screen. They are paper thin and it takes absolutely no force to rip them off the motherboard. In my case, I just removed the darn batteries and I did not bother to replace them after the removal or trying to re-connect the screen. The Surface Book (or what's left of it) starts up without the batteries when connected to the power and Windows recognizes the external screens (I have a Microsoft Travel Hub connected with two screens attached). I will toss the keyboard away, because this one is bulging as well due to the horrible batteries. I used to love the Surface Book, but the issue with the swollen batteries is a deal breaker for me.

Hi, I have surface book 1 i5 8GB/128GB, When I insert the plug into the Charging Port, the white light comes on When I press the power button, the laptop does not turn on. I can't disconnect the screen from the keyboard either. When I press the Surface's Eject Button, the light turns red. When I press the power button and hold down the volume up button, after a dozen or so seconds, the red light from the Surface tablet's disconnect button lights up once. I just did this full replacement. Took my like 3 and half hours and I accidentally ripped off the antenna lol. But now my battery 1 (the one in the tablet) is showing a 0% charge and when I ran the battery report, it's not even showing up. Did you have to do any driver updates or anything to make it work after changing the battery?
But...I am Arch user tho. Also, you want a bucket of sand when dealing with highly flammable batteries like Li-Poly. Pour the sand over the flames. It will starve it quick fast.

Extinguishing lithium battery fires? No chance. You need either a ton of water or something to suffocate it. Work on an oven tray (steel!) and keep a bucket of fine-grained sand close by. In case of a fire you can dump the bucket onto the tray and carry it outside. Do not use powder extinguishers. They do almost nothing and you will certainly ruin every device in the room.
One of the chief reasons I don't believe a word Apple says when they claim to be environmentally driven in their decisions is the trend of them making their hardware more difficult to repair with each generation. This also applies to pretty much every electronics company and it seems that where Apple goes, the rest follows.

Honestly if you are coming up on a 3 year warranty and have swelling like that, see if you can just use the warranty for an upgrade. A lot of these issues that crop up, Microsoft won’t want to deal with repairing. Turned an original skylake surface book into a a new pro 7 by using the warranty on it.
That sounds great, but these are 2016 laptops which means the warranty expired sometime in 2019, and we are almost at the end of 2020. Which means there is no warranty to use.

You count down to the 6th hole on the side venting and push a small screwdriver, tweezers, etc., in at a slight angle until you hear the click of the release mechanism. You're welcome
With the Surface display I can understand the need for adhesive, but the chassis, batteries, and camera brackets? No. No way does preserving the form factor call for it. This is just anti-consumer, anti-repair greed, pure and simple.
It will only get worse until safety laws forbid the use of glue (which is only removable with heat) on batteries which when heated can become a fire hazard.
@@Holcombi I can assure you changing the battery on any MacBook is considerably easier than a surface book, plus Apple will do it for you for $129-$199 if its less than 6 years old.

I have this weird problem after swapping the battery. For some reason my surface book always shows 0% battery. If I turn on the computer without a charge, it will show battery at 1 bar and shut down immediately. And yes I charged it overnight. If I turn on the computer with a charger and unplug the charger after booting to windows, it will stay on but with 0% battery. I watched some video and it did not power off at 0%. Anyone else with this issue?

Nope. I did this, and my Surface Book battery still expanded. The batteries are defective.

DISCHARGE THE BATTERY BEFORE REPLACING IT! The amount of energy released if it were to explode will be much less than with it fully charged.

if you've got a 3d printer with a heated bed you can melt the glue with that better/more evenly than a heat gun. set the bed to around 70-85c
Do you recommend placing it screen side down or on the back when heating it up on the 3d printer bed?

I did this repair with my swelling battery on my surface book. The trickiest bit was getting the battery out. It was so incredibly stuck down.

I just did this full replacement. Took my like 3 and half hours and I accidentally ripped off the antenna lol. But now my battery 1 (the one in the tablet) is showing a 0% charge and when I ran the battery report, it's not even showing up. Did you have to do any driver updates or anything to make it work after changing the battery?
No but sometimes there is a fuse that is also blown if your battery was in bad shape
But...I am Arch user tho. Also, you want a bucket of sand when dealing with highly flammable batteries like Li-Poly. Pour the sand over the flames. It will starve it quick fast.
I love my surface book, but both the batteries are at 75% max capacity, Ive also got white spots on my screen.
Im dreading replacing them.

Extinguishing lithium battery fires? No chance. You need either a ton of water or something to suffocate it. Work on an oven tray (steel!) and keep a bucket of fine-grained sand close by. In case of a fire you can dump the bucket onto the tray and carry it outside. Do not use powder extinguishers. They do almost nothing and you will certainly ruin every device in the room.

One of the chief reasons I don't believe a word Apple says when they claim to be environmentally driven in their decisions is the trend of them making their hardware more difficult to repair with each generation. This also applies to pretty much every electronics company and it seems that where Apple goes, the rest follows.
...when you go to great lengths to keep an outdated piece of hardware going... kittens live and angels get their wings... and world peace happens - watching this vid on a 2nd hand 2015 HP 13" laptop which I rescued from certain doom... tricky to pull apart but not as bad as those surface gizmos - first time I tried it and won't be last one [+Linux FTW!! ] :)
Honestly if you are coming up on a 3 year warranty and have swelling like that, see if you can just use the warranty for an upgrade. A lot of these issues that crop up, Microsoft won’t want to deal with repairing. Turned an original skylake surface book into a a new pro 7 by using the warranty on it.
That sounds great, but these are 2016 laptops which means the warranty expired sometime in 2019, and we are almost at the end of 2020. Which means there is no warranty to use.

Btw, you can actually remove the upper LCD section from the base manually (without power). You count down to the 6th hole on the side venting and push a small screwdriver, tweezers, etc., in at a slight angle until you hear the click of the release mechanism. You're welcome

Incorrect. Rechargeable batteries do benefit from being used, BUT, they bulge up when they remain DISCHARGED for a long time (8 months, 1, 2 years).
From the title I hoped there would be DIY ARM laptop parts.
Be nice to know all the computers that use glue instead of screws in assembly. (The ones to avoid)
With the Surface display I can understand the need for adhesive, but the chassis, batteries, and camera brackets? No. No way does preserving the form factor call for it. This is just anti-consumer, anti-repair greed, pure and simple.

wow considering the price of those surface books when new, i thought they wouldnt be disposable and crap like that... Jesus.
It will only get worse until safety laws forbid the use of glue (which is only removable with heat) on batteries which when heated can become a fire hazard.
Look at any mac book built in the last 6 years for better examples of anti-repair
@@Holcombi I can assure you changing the battery on any MacBook is considerably easier than a surface book, plus Apple will do it for you for $129-$199 if its less than 6 years old.
@@edc1569 are you arguing that every single macbook made in that last 6 years has been built upon a foundation of anti-repair? Or, that they don't also glue their batteries in place? Also, 5 minutes worth of googling points to the inherent flaw in your line of though since the only reason they are "easier" to repair is because apple stores replace the entire top case enclosure including the keyboard and trackpad.
I have this weird problem after swapping the battery.
For some reason my surface book always shows 0% battery.
If I turn on the computer without a charge, it will show battery at 1 bar and shut down immediately. And yes I charged it overnight.
If I turn on the computer with a charger and unplug the charger after booting to windows, it will stay on but with 0% battery. I watched some video and it did not power off at 0%.
Anyone else with this issue?
