I don't know, sometimes introverted pianists can muster the strength to block the crowd out enough to perform, but get anxiety/ don't feel comfortable with teaching one-on-one. Especially if they only play by ear and can't read sheets.
This situation is clearly someone choosing to perform for a congregation and avoiding sharing their tricks, which is kind of selfish if the person asking genuinely wants to learn.

    • @bobkendomowitz9534

    • @DrewDienno

@@bobkendomowitz9534 correct. but you also shouldn't feel guilty about politely declining a lesson when ambushed for one if you don't have the ability to read and play sheet music in-time and have decent communicative skills.
I have neurodivergence and a stutter, so I can play by ear easily, can read sheets, but can't read sheets and play in-time. I would feel uneasy showing someone something on piano knowing I'm probably giving them wrong information or wrong technique, plus they have to trundle through me stuttering which nobody wants.

Anytime anyone ever asked me how I did something on piano, I would show them. And if they wanted to learn it, I would try to teach them.
Most people would give up anyway as they didn’t want to put the time and effort into it. But when someone got it, it would actually make me proud.
Especially now that I’m getting older I want to pass on what I know to the younger generation. That way when I am gone, it will still live on in them.
