Steven Moffat was my favorite Doctor Who showrunner and this episode was a reminder why. He even managed to insert a touch of whimsy in this super intense episode! You'll get Moffat soon enough when you get back to the older episodes. He takes over at the start of season 5 and stays through the end of season 10. Clergy being the military is something you'll see during Moffat's era. I don't know if he introduced the idea or not - it could have come from Classic Who, I haven't seen enough of Classic Who to know. But he uses the concept at various points through his run. Makes sense to me. The Doctor is right - they have been soldiers and warriors throughout human history. Holy wars are still being waged in some parts of the world.
I won't lie, I'd be so glad if he decided he also wanted to have another run at it like RTD. I'm all for fresh blood but Moffat was brilliant, can't wait for them to get to Series 5
The Anglican Marines AFAIK were not in Classic WHO, they first appear in the 2 parter near the start of Series 5, THAT one. Which is 51st century, and so is their other appearances, and given the Calendar age they gave for Ruby, it also adds up to 51st century, so he has his notes and checks them while writing. Only other WHO stuff in or around that time period I think is Magnus Greel from the Talons of Weng-Chiang in Classic WHO.
I liked that you mentioned the little girl and what she represents, because a lot of people have been missing that point and throwing a fit about why she was even in that story, or how she shouldn't be acting like that for her age. That was exactly the point.
It's weird that every one of Ncuti's episodes have featured the same actress, Susan Twist, playing different characters. This week, she was the recorded message of the ambulance, last week she was the lady working at the BBC canteen, before that she was one of the former crew of the Space Babies station. She was in the Christmas episode, too. Probably just coincidence.
Part of the mystery for the season or pertaining to Ruby's true identity, which RTD said would span two seasons so if she's part of that mystery, it's possible she'll be in every episode until we know the truth about Ruby, so that could be till the next season
Good episode. I like when you can see the previous Doctors saying the lines too, if that makes sense. You know they're all one person at different stages of life.

We don't know she'll be playing the same character. I think this is one of those situations like with Freema where they liked the actor so they brought them back later as a different character to be main cast. P.S.: From AI (ChatGPT4): "The quote 'What survives of us is love' is often attributed to Philip Larkin, a prominent British poet. It comes from his poem 'An Arundel Tomb,' which was published in his 1964 collection 'The Whitsun Weddings.' If only every citizen had such coverage. I wish we did have an NHS like they do across the pond. If I didn't have a good job I wouldn't be covered. There's a callback here (well, quite a few callbacks, but you haven't gotten to most of the relevant episodes yet) that I actually missed on my first watch. The Weapon Groves of Villengard were mentioned in The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances as a place that the Doctor visited, destroyed, and replaced with a banana farm.
OMG! That CHILD!! She was just stubborn and hard-headed. I could hear my mother and grandmother saying, “hard head makes a soft bottom” There are times for an explanation, but then was NOT IT, and she just needed to do what she was told to do.

Doctor Who is back! Thank God for Steven Moffat! Best episode since RTD came back as show runner. It’s been announced that Moffat is writing this year’s Christmas special, which is surprising because in the past it’s always been the show runner in NuWho that writes the Christmas episode, so I can only think that Moffat has come up with such a great idea/story that RTD was happy to step aside because he couldn’t top it with any of his own ideas. Here’s hoping.
Aaaah there we are, been waiting. :) I must say, at the risk of sounding a bit pedantic, I'm really curious to see some American takes on the criticism of blind faith. Mind you, I respect the shit ton of spiritual people who form their own vision of the universe and potential higher powers but it's more difficult for me to comprehend basing your entire life on old scriptures written centuries ago, so that take on blind faith was very welcome for me.
Kind of weird that in the last episode, they said Ruby had been travelling with the Doctor for six months, but this is her first time on an alien planet?
I have a suspicion the episodes were reordered for some reason and that line wasn't corrected, but it's just a personal theory. I guess we'll see when 74 Yards or Dot and Bubble come out as to which one RTD was so proud of.
So on BBC iPlayer it's Episode 3. Basically The Church on Ruby Road is listed as "Christmas Special" with no number, but is still at the start of the Season, but I think Disney Plus doesn't have a way to list it as such without it having a number. I also reckon they want to make it clear that that's the place for new audiences to start. BBC official though is episode 3.
Fish fingers and custard ❤ One of my favorite callbacks to one of my favorite companions. I won’t say what the person’s name is 🤐 This revelation is coming soon when Syntell and Rekkai react to the past seasons after David Tennant’s departure. #whovianforlife
So... we gonna talk about the actress Susan Twist yet? I'll put it in a reply. There's no spoilers - I have no special information - but some people might not be into speculating.
So, Susan Twist. This actress (and it is her real name, she's been a working actress for some years) has been in 5 episodes recently. 1. The special Wild Blue Yonder, as a woman in the 18th century. Not saying more, as Syntell and Rekkai haven't watched that yet. 2. In The Church on Ruby Road, as a woman at Ruby's gig who requests that she play Gaudete, a very old Christmas Carol. 3. A brief cameo in Space Babies as a recorded message from one of the crew who abandoned ship. 4. A tea lady in The Devil's Chord, who says she's like Margaret Lockwood in The Wicked Lady - "statuesque". 5. And now in Boom she's the lady on the ambulance droids. Also in The Devil's Chord we had the doctor mentioning his granddaughter Susan, and notably 'There's always a Twist at the end". She's confirmed in next week's cast too. I have no idea where this is going, tbh, lots of clues and no proper link between them yet. So, any (unspoilery) ideas, people?
What an episode. War by algorithm! Who knew. Screwed with religion. The lady playing Mundy Flynn is the new companion for Dr Who next season. Don’t know if it’s one or two companions? I think the snow is Ruby’s equivalent of Bad Wolf.
I thought it was pretty clear that Splice knew the hologram wasn't her real dad, she straight up called it a hologram too. There's no reason to assume that a normal outside kid who got special permission to be here (which means they have no procedure for explaining the war or the caskets to children) would know that the hologram means her dad is dead. (They emphasize this before we even hit the intro, and when she meets Ruby and Doc, the first people who might actually tell Splice what's going on, they completely refuse.) Her dad was simply missing, and the hologram was the only lead to his whereabouts that she could find. That's also why she only panics once the Ambulance takes the AI away. I don't get how you could think that she was too stupid to tell or was in shock, that's ironically enough a bad faith reading of the episode
I was glad to see Moffat coming back to guest writing since he took a break during the awful era after his run. Cant really say much due to spoilers of his writing style but yea typical Moffat stuff here though this episode started off crazy I think I would have to rate it as one of his weakest. Though I love the doctor hating on blind faith as someone who was raised christian and finally broke free of that brain washing in highschool it hurts sometimes seeing people who are so steadfast in their beliefs. the annoying child ruined it for me though she was important to the typical doctor who weak conclusion... also the "everywhere is a beach eventually" sure except most planets dont even have oceans but i guess every planet with life should have some kinda water but still. and the teasing next of kin when we only got like 8 episodes in a season when we used to have 13. also the dumb song in the last episode and waiting for the "twist at the end" which is... the twist is NEXT TIME ON DOCTOR WHO! except most smart people dont wanna watch the next time cause spoilers.
After reading some of Ncuti’s comments in the press, I’m out after episode 2. I have no desire to see him as the Doctor twerking. As a Black man that strikes me as cringe AF.
Im not usually a negative person and i was hoping this episode was going to be great but sadly it wasn't this was just crap it's a soap opera in space this is not science fiction there were no villains, no one died it was a typical Moffat episode.
You really expect so little from Sci-Fi/Fantasy huh? No one died? 2 people died before the credits! Another later on. How much death do you need to be entertained?
youtube.com/@joshuajoshua2732 Nobody dies??? Did you miss the 2 deaths that happen before we get the intro rolling???? Are you even watching the same show???

I also reckon they want to make it clear that that's the place for new audiences to start. BBC official though is episode 3.
They used to number the Christmas special as 0.
Once u meet the 11th ull get the reference fish fingers and custard😂
Fish fingers and custard ❤ One of my favorite callbacks to one of my favorite companions. I won’t say what the person’s name is 🤐 This revelation is coming soon when Syntell and Rekkai react to the past seasons after David Tennant’s departure. #whovianforlife
Thank you! That little girl was special. Nobody else wants to admit it.
Can’t wait to watch this Reaction hope you guys are doing well 💯
Having a ball with all of these wonderful stories.
Really looking forward to revisiting some of the older seasons.
@@Syntell can’t wait for more Doctor Who content 😀
Can't wait for you guys to get to Moffat era! Capaldi is unbeatable
It makes me sad some of the easter eggs went over your heads, i cant wait till you catch up to bits & be like oh shit that's what they meant 😅
Mad that your reacting to disney doctor who before the golden era
I didn't know you were reacting to Doctor Who. I'm seated.
My favorite of this season
Honestly, I think this episode should've been called Kiss Kiss, but what do I know?
It probably went through a few titles. Kiss, Kiss, Boom. Thoughts and Prayers.
@@thelazygamer1639 They are all really good titles for this particular episode.
Or Thoughts and Prayers
That would have been a great title.
So... we gonna talk about the actress Susan Twist yet?
Fantastic episode
I thought it was pretty clear that Splice knew the hologram wasn't her real dad, she straight up called it a hologram too. There's no reason to assume that a normal outside kid who got special permission to be here (which means they have no procedure for explaining the war or the caskets to children) would know that the hologram means her dad is dead. (They emphasize this before we even hit the intro, and when she meets Ruby and Doc, the first people who might actually tell Splice what's going on, they completely refuse.)
Her dad was simply missing, and the hologram was the only lead to his whereabouts that she could find.
Terminator status
If y’all are gonna watch ahead I’m just gonna check out of this watch through. Feels like cheating
The kid was annoying. If it was possible place the kid on the mine instead. You might like @DWPoop has done a few spoofs of this series.
After reading some of Ncuti’s comments in the press, I’m out after episode 2. I have no desire to see him as the Doctor twerking. As a Black man that strikes me as cringe AF.
Please react to Interview With The Vampire S2
We’re already on it.
Episodes 2 should be out shortly.
@@Syntell oh Thank you for answering❤️❤️
Im not usually a negative person and i was hoping this episode was going to be great but sadly it wasn't this was just crap it's a soap opera in space this is not science fiction there were no villains, no one died it was a typical Moffat episode.
How could this story possibly be construed as "soap opera"? If I want soap opera in my Doctor Who, I tend to reach for an RTD1 story.
When will you be starting S4?
