LYRICS:
Every mornin' at the mine you could see him arrive
He stood six-foot-six and weighed two-forty-five
Kinda broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip
And everybody knew ya didn't give no lip to big John
(Big John, big John)
Big bad John (big John)
Nobody seemed to know where John called home
He just drifted into town and stayed all alone
He didn't say much, kinda quiet and shy
And if you spoke at all, you just said hi to Big John
Somebody said he came from New Orleans
Where he got in a fight over a Cajun Queen
And a crashin' blow from a huge right hand
Sent a Louisiana fellow to the promised land, big John
(Big John, big John)
Big bad John (big John)
Then came the day at the bottom of the mine
When a timber cracked and men started cryin'
Miners were prayin' and hearts beat fast
And everybody thought that they'd breathed their last, 'cept John
Through the dust and the smoke of this man-made hell
Walked a giant of a man that the miners knew well
Grabbed a saggin' timber, gave out with a groan
And like a giant oak tree he just stood there alone, big John
(Big John, big John)
Big bad John (big John)
And with all of his strength he gave a mighty shove
Then a miner yelled out "there's a light up above!"
And twenty men scrambled from a would-be grave
Now there's only one left down there to save, big John
With jacks and timbers they started back down
Then came that rumble way down in the ground
And then smoke and gas belched out of that mine
Everybody knew it was the end of the line for big John
(Big John, big John)
Big bad John (big John)
Now, they never reopened that worthless pit
They just placed a marble stand in front of it
These few words are written on that stand
At the bottom of this mine lies a big, big man
Big John
(Big John, big John)
Big bad John (big John)
(Big John) big bad John

Age takes its toll, ... but Jimmy still singing it with heart & soul.
Len Hummel try
He's telling a story and that's what i love about it
Big John is my favorite song I listen to it with my dad every day and I eat Jimmy dean food for breakfast every day
@@atomicmoth1260 So you eat the mans sausage everyday huh?
He was lol He actually died in 2010.
This man has more swagger even sitting down than I’ve ever had in my pinky toe
so true one hell of a guy
So true
Yep
God I hate him
You're meant to say he has more in his pinky toe than you've ever had..... of course he has more than you do in your pink toe as that is probably next to nothing!!
So much respect for this singer, he reminds me of the old Real American & Proud Of It. ( I came to the US back in the 75 as a refugee) Thank you, America and God Bless Our Nation.
Jimmy Dean was a legend. He actually grew up on the same west Texas farm as my grandmother (they were first cousins). When my family moved to Richmond, we used to hang out with him pretty often at his house on the James River. This was during the last 10 years or so of his life, and he was big and bad until the end, sharp tongued, big hat, and bigger heart. When my grandmother would come to town they had the wildest stories about growing up in the dust bowl... and shoot I’ve got some wild stories of him that I’ve seen myself too. True legend
Bag peeps
That’s cool my great aunt was married to him
@@DNorwood2007 Donna? Or his first wife?
Very cool 💓💓💓💓
Aged like fine, fine whiskey. It's _his_ song so I'm content to hear him sing it anyway he likes. Thank you, Jimmy Dean.
Jimmy Dean.. Legends Are Never Forgotten
well said
Everyone respected and feared Big John but he gave his life without a second thought to save his fellow man... legend
Is. Jimmy dean still alive
@@charlesday5845 No
It’s a song not a real person you twit.
@@OrangeDiamond33 Jimmy Dean is the person singing
Greater love hath no man, than to lay down his life for his brother.
Jimmy Dean is the epitome of an American hero. Just like Big John. Sacrifice for the love of his brothers. From a Canadian and your neighbors up north..
Wordy tune. Lots to remember. No teleprompter in sight. That real quantifiable talent. Thanks for the grinding, JD.
That’s not Autotune either. He was more talented in his eighties than the young clowns of “country “ now.
Despite all the years taking a toll on Jimmy Dean, he still had a great voice. Great storytelling song!
There's no one out there that hasn't imagined their version of this song playing out in their head. A great story told by a great storyteller Jimmy Dean!!
That’s the best version I’ve ever heard of this song ever!
RIP Jimmy, many thanks!!
RIP Jimmy Dean. Thank you for music and service
RIP Jimmy..the cowboy hat and boots it's so American..God bless you lovely people, from an admirer across the pond in England
Beautiful Comment.
God Bless !!!!
strake750 Love and a hat tip from this Texan.
And this Texan as well. :)
Thank you for being British and appreciating part of America!

It’s awesome that he was performing in his twilight like this. You can tell he was having a great time and leading the crowd.
I was born in 68, when I was little my dad would tell me that this song was about me. And I just couldn't figure out how the heck they knew me to write a song about me. Hahah! He would sing along with it and I would join in. About the same time, I learned the song 16 Tons while on a car ride to my grandparents place out in the country. Good times indeed.
Jimmy wasn't in good health here, but you wouldn't know it by the way he sang this song.
I loved Jimmy Dean and his product was good too. he was over 80 when he left us. Rest in peace.
Hi friend 😊 how are you doing today?
The men singing back up at 0:11 were Elvis’ backup singers from the 50s and 70s... the Jordinaires.. and The Imperials!
Dont know the 2 on either side but...the one in the middle is Larry Gatlin.

My dad used to sing this all the time. When I was a boy.I used to think he wrote it himself when. I was young.Great memories.
Man, he could still sing! I always loved this song! I'm a big, old man, but I love it when I hear this song!
Isn’t really singing……
A national treasure. RIP Big Bad Jim...
what is beautiful here how the community came to support him. and rightfully so. not even about the song It's about the folks in the arena you cant get past that. He is an icon not to be forgotten.
Arena? 😂
One of his best performances of the song. Gets finer with age.
I met Jimmy back in the 70's when he was promoting his sausage. Came into the meat dept and shook hands .I remember he was so tall and hands that swallowed mine up ,when we shook.
Watching in 2022. This seriously brought me to tears and put a smile on my face. God bless you Jimmy. RIP. 🙏❤🙏
That was just beautiful thanks for posting RIP Jimmy
I remember this tune from when I was a kid. I like this a lot. Some people will roll their eyes and think this is a silly, sentimental so g but I think it’s a call to be a bigger man. We need heroes these days of the kind that this song eludes to. You don’t have to be a large strong man and lay down your life to save a bunch of miners to be heroic. What this world needs desperately is ordinary men who will go about what needs to be done as living sacrifices for their wives, children, employers, neighbours, and community. When I think about other men that I admire I think of the quiet strong men who did the right thing time and again. They did it with quiet courage. Perhaps they even shed a lonely unseen tear every once in a while as they tried to live with integrity. There are some big John’s still out there. Maybe one or two of you are reading this. My best to you!
STILL BRILLIANT!
Yee haw Mister Dean!🤠
Howdy there!
Son Will Forever Remind Me Of My Dad. He Could Be a Care Bear Or a Grizzly. LOL Big Guy With a Big Heart. Will Never Forget When I Was Like 10; He Got a Casette With This Song And Many Other Old Ones On It From "Deals" (the dollar store). Take Me Back! 🤧

That was my name my parentsgave me, John I was born in 1961and dad always called me big John ! And to see and hear Mr. Dean sing it it sure brought back a flood of memories! Thank you Mr. Dean , god bless you
I'm speechless ... Those old songs will never go away that'll all ways be here . Times changeling . Elder s said gotta change to...
I love this song. I'm English, so I don't have the heritage you folks do in the US, but my mother brought me up to love country and western, and I still do. As I've said on other posts, I'm terminally ill but I can still enjoy fantastic songs like this one (which I have on many CDs). Also my partner is called John, Scottish not American, but I do like calling him "Big Bad John". Bizarrely, he has a degree in mining engineering! Lovely song
I counted at least 3 lies
God bless the memory of Jimmy Dean. What a man.
I just remember him from being on Daniel Boone too much that was the best of Jimmy Jimmy Dean God bless his soul
Never gets old...one of the best story songs ever done.
my mom cried as if she fell out of heaven when I showed her because this is my grandpa's favorite singer.
You ride the little bus don’t you
@Angela Lee You’re right. Sorry about that.
I ride the short bus...lol
First song i learned at two years,Jimmy Dean a remarkable individual
I remember this from when I was a kid and it's still a favorite.
Found this video at Thu, Oct 18, 2018. Shed my tear to see he performed, feel so alive, and lovely.
Btw i found this song very first time in unknown radio at midnight, it was 2011. It's cool, i try to google the main word big john, and found it. Really surprised it very old song. But its so beautiful. Even i born at 1990, the song still charmed me.
Thanks Jimmy Dean. i read some comments that u rest in peace. Be happy there, Jimmy
I just recently found his TV show on UA-cam...he was a talented man, with a great sense of humor, and TONS of talent
The way old Jimmy sings this song makes it sound like he's one of the miners that Big John saved and is now telling his grandkids about the man who saved his life all those years ago.
He was also an actor, and even appeared in the Bond Movie Diamonds are Forever
Is it normal to cry during this?
This song makes me proud to be 6'5" 250 lbs and named john
grow an inch and lose five pounds lol, although I thought your comment was funny
Wow that’s crazy you should be proud
So you’re proud to be shorter and fatter then Big Bad John?

Hi big bad John
It's amazing how good he still sings, even at such a old age.
It's daybreak out here in California and after hearing that wonderful rendition I've got a sudden craving for sausage and eggs.
I’ll bet you love sausage
I wonder if corporation taking over sausage company Jimmy Dean etc knocked off Jimmy
Biscuits and sausage gravy 😋
A touching performance by Big Jimmy. Hasta la vista.
Legend ❤️🇺🇸🏴 god bless this dude 🏴❤️🇺🇸
This is incredible!
One of the first songs I loved on the radio, age 6, so glad I found this
It’s the hat that does it for me 🤠
Amazing, even at that advanced age he still had that X factor
This gives me goosebumps
My Dad last Year he was forever known as Big John Miss You Dad 😢
One of my all time favourite songs.
No greater love hath Man than to lay down his life for his friends
Goosebumps city!
RIP legends never die I’m talkin’ about both men
Love this. Jimmy still had it. John is still big and bad, even after all these years.
I have mad respect for that man
RIP Jimmy Dean
My Ghu! The man still had it!
Song always reminds me of college days. I'm 6'4', Big John was 6'6" and Biggest John was 6'8". We were the UCSS defensive line in 1986.
A true great American indeed
The audience reminds me of Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job!
A great man with a great voice and great sausage.
Truly a all time classic
He was big, big, big John
My dad always played this song fir us when we where kids, his mane was JOHN, and people called him big John, made we feel proud of my dad for some reason, he was always my hero
Dean was another great story teller. This is a great song.
watching everyone sing gave me goosebumps, i’ll watch this all day
Jimmy and my wife's aunt were high school sweethearts in Plainview TX.
Plainview Texas is my hometown and is very proud of Jimmy Dean. There is now a section in the Wayland Baptist Museum dedicated to him. It's really worth seeing. Jimmy didn't graduate from Plainview High School because he left to join the military. Years later the high school awarded him and honorary degree. He is probably the most famous person to ever come from Plainview, Texas. Another well-known person was Jim Clark from the Class of 1962 who, with Marc Andreeson, started NetScape. He, also, did not
graduate from Plainview High School. He joined the military and fell in love with computers.

What a man.....what a singer......what a legend.....nobody did it better!!!!
Amazing performance.
While I certainly would never see eye to eye with his politics or other values he held, I have to admire this song, and this particular rendition, as Jimmy Dean nears the end of his life, is quite good. The backup singers -- the entire audience -- lent a lot to this performance. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Thanks for posting! Great song!!
An absolutely legendary performance.
What a wonderful performance...I'm in tears of joy!
A legend who lives in all with an American heart.
loved him growing up.
Who else sang along, every word for word? Great song from my childhood days when I had the 33rpm record...
May this man RIP, they just don't make them like him anymore

Love that song but it always makes me 😢 cry

"Heroes Get Remembered, Legends Never Die"
Could this be the first rap song ever?
Our family saw JD at the Valley Music Hall in Bountiful, Utah in 1969
He said in a interview that, he was on a plane headed to Nashville and in those days you got 3 hours of studio time and could record a maximum of 4 songs. He didn’t have 4 songs so he wrote “Big John” in an hour on the plane. They don’t make them like this anymore.
