Nothing exists outside the consciousness of "The Great Gig in the Sky." But it's not in the sky, it's everything - seen and unseen - including you and me. Death is a blessing. It's not an end, it's a continuation. We've all been through it many, many times.

While reading the replies you received from different people, and different versions on the same subject. Many years after the fact, I saw a program on TV where they interviewed all the members individually. If memory serves, it was right after the passing of Richard Wright. And I'm pretty sure it was David Gilmour that said the same thing that you did, one take. Now that was the only time I ever heard anything on the subject, so, who knows? And as far as getting the facts off the internet, I once got two different birthdays from two different sources on the same celebrity. And on another celebrity, One source said this female celebrity was a lesbian. Where the other source said she was married to a man and had two children. So let's face it, getting the right answer from the internet every time is like calling the IRS for the right answer. If you call the IRS three different times and speak to three different people about the same question, most likely you will get three different answers.😆

This whole album truly is a masterpiece and really needs to be listened to in order from beginning to end as they are all tied together as a concept. It is no accident that a song about grief and death comes after a song about time and how we use/waste it.

Claire Torey knocked this out of the park. Her vocal performance was basically improvised on the spot and portrays the stages of grief after a loss. Simply beautiful.
"CLARE TORRY". It's not that difficult, mate. This historic, stunning vocalist of the 20th Century deserves an enormous level of respect.
I love the fade out of her voice where she's accepted her fate.
The male spoken word part in the background is part of a selection of recordings the band took from people around the studio while recording the album. They asked questions like "Are you afraid of dying" and "When was the last time you were violent, and were you in the right" and recorded the responses. They can be found all throughout Dark Side.
🥀🥀 I am so gladyou chose Claire Torey's vocals from the studio version. A lot of women have tried to sing the part, they're OK, but still all fall short. Claire was the bomb. As long as sometime you listen (on your own time is fine) to the entire album so that it's all in context.
I played this many times after my husband unexpectedly died in 2005. Many times I wailed along in my grief, but it was cathartic. It still brings tears I just found out...

They recon when the Floyd asked this girl to improvise some vocals they were in the studio recording it. and when she was finished the band walked out. She thought they were disappointed and wouldent use it on the record. She didn,t realize they were stunned and dumbstruck
Pink Floyd's albums are specifically designed to be listened to from beginning to end with a good set of stereo speakers or headphones. So as soon as you feel like you've done enough reacts from Dark Side of the Moon you should sit down, relax (maybe smoke up), and listen to the whole thing. It's some of the best 43 minutes to ever come out of rock music.

The reason why Time flows into this one, is because its The End. Time is up, now onto The Gig In The Sky. The song captures death perfectly. Fighting in the beginning, then acceptance and peace.
To me Great Gig In The Sky is the single greatest track ever done. My mother thought it was screaming back in the 70s.

Polo I have listened to this at least a million time get ready Polo me too love it!!!! Agree it's sad and it fit me perfectly during my teen-age years just exactly matching that kind of mood I feel it's very profound.
Of course it gives you a sad vibe. The song is essentially a mournful wail of a woman experiencing, discovering and then eventually accepting the death of a loved one. The five stages of loss.
Richard Wright said it's "about death, obviously," but I don't think it was ever clear whose death... I had always assumed from the way Clare's voice fades and becomes distant that it was her own death, but then in some cultures wailing at the death of a loved one is part of the culture of mourning. That bit of ambiguity just makes it all the more interesting.
This whole album is a masterpiece but this song is just so layered with so many emotions . Truly the best stages of grief ever explained with no words. Genuis .
Clare H. Torry’s vocals in this song are on a par with anything I’ve evere heard from any vocalist and she never has to sing a word. Magnificent. You will never hear a bad Pink Floyd Song btw. Thanks Polo.

Thanks for mentioning the drums. Clare Torey's vocals are immaculate, but the eratic emphasis of the crashing symbols during the first half of the piece really enhance the emotional impact of her vocalizations. Yes, it is an incredible duet.

You haven't lived unless you've seen Pink Floyd in concert! I was fortunate to have that experience! My favorite band forever! Groundbreaking music that changes you and stays with you FOREVER! It's amazing to see younger generations appreciate this music!
This album was on the Billboard Top 100 for, like, 15 years. (I'm sure someone will have it down to the number of weeks) but it was just insane. One of the greatest albums by any band of any era. Classic squared.

Very impressive.
I saw Pink Floyd in Denver at Mile High Stadium (they ringed the stadium with speakers and the sound was amazing!!). The solo for GREAT GIG IN THE SKY used (3) women with outstanding voices... that's how good the original take was with a single vocalist.
I have told my kids that when it is time for my passing they are to be playing this in the background while I am being given a Viking Funeral
I can completely understand the way the songs blend into each other. The thing about this track is it's so very simple. No lyrics and not huge instrumentals. It's all about the wordless vocals. Simple as it is, I really feel something from her singing- Even without any words.
This is definitely getting played at my funeral.....it just works on so many levels 😉
Ok… I’m gonna tell the story… I saw them live in the early 90’s at an outdoor amphitheater. I was in college at the time and went with several friends from my art classes. Lol. Id already rolled about 8 cannon joints and my colleagues had their own joints rolled. It was cold and we were outside. Luckily, we weren’t into drinking because the port-a-potties were few and far between.
During the concert the crowds around us had also smuggled their weed in and immediately started to smoke. I lit up and passed between my friends until someone behind me tapped my shoulder to pass to us their absolute unit of a joint. I took it, lit up a fresh one of mine to pass it back. The people in front of us started sharing their trees so we, of course, returned the favor.
Now… honestly, I have no clear recollection for how far this spread. But, the entire rest of the concert I don’t believe I saw a different joint, blunt, twice. I’m not certain how large it grew. All I know is the concert was about 3 and a half hours and I’d lit all 8 of my fat-ass joints to pass around and was glad I never saw one come back to me because I was busy puffing and passing this anonymous joint, that anonymous spliff, this blunt, there’s a cannon, here’s a baseball bat. What an evening!
I saw them mid seventies at Anaheim stadium. Lots of doob passing. Giant balloons of farm animals in your face

Fun story. Mine is seeing them in Milwaukee at their old baseball stadium, '74 or' 75, and the moon came out from behind the clouds while the lyrics "... I'll see you on the dark side of the moon..." then went back under. It made the papers. 🌑
You can’t compare this with Time, they are different animals. But when you combine this song after Time, the power of each grows exponentially. Listen to the two together to get the whole picture (really the first side, or whole album)

Listening to Dark Side of the Moon has helped me accept my terminal bone marrow Cancer diagnosis six years ago, one of my favourite albums since i first heard it the 1970's. Listen with your eyes closed, lay back and enjoy.
Hi Polo - The Great Gig in The Skyby Pink Floyd - a song about accepting death - first we rage against the loss of a loved one - and then we slowly accept it as their soul goes to wherever. This is fearless music nobody had the balls to produce a wordless piece of soul that says so much - certainly not in the early 1970’s. Genius musicians and artists - they are an experience rather than a band whose music transcends daily life and enters our core to touch us emotionally.
I can only listen to this piece very occasionally- it's like a straight shot of the finest whiskey; smooth, beautiful, and will knock you flat on your back if you aren't ready.
You commented this song doesn't have much singing, but as you can see, it's full of singing...just not with words! It's musical genius. The stages of death expressed in musical form, and raw vocals with no words, it's just an astounding feat and piece of music. The emotion and feels are so very real!
That moving thing in the background always makes me think about the walking hammers in “ Another brick in the wall” & “Waiting for the worms” from Pink Floyd’s album “The Wall”….
As always, a wonderful reaction, Polo. This song is so heavy; it succeeds in its intent; it goes through the emotions one must feel when they know they are dying. Those vocals TAKE you there.
Most of us have seen the Clare Torry video interview where she talks about this song , but I remember an interview she gave long before UA-cam ,Google etc.(Possibly in The NME) where she specifically says that Dave Gilmour took her to one side and asked her if she could improvise her singing to envisage how she would imagine what dying would feel like.
After the recording was finished, she also said how completely embarrassed she felt when she realised how far she'd let herself go.
Clare only sang on this one song.
.(P.S.The other 4 females on the rest of TDSOTM were all session singers and the one who has the most prominent voice on the tracks "Time, Brain Damage/Eclipse was a lady called Doris Troy who was born in The Bronx).
Truly one of the most incredible pieces of music ever captured... It almost brings me to tears every time I hear it because of how beautiful and emotional it is. Especially once you understand the concept of dealing with the idea of death. Something every one of us will have to face one day...
The background vocal is stupendous. Uses the voices as instruments. The woman became famous for this tract she laid it down cold in the studio and blew the band and evrryone out of their minds.

You really need to take in the Dark Side of the Moon LP in its entirety. Side 1 starts out with Speak to Me/Breathe, which represents birth. Time serves as the centerpiece of this first half of the album and is a reflection on aging. The Great Gig in the Sky, which is a metaphor for death, appropriately ends the first half of the album which was meant to represent a life from birth to death. Back in the days when you had to flip the record over to side 2, there was really a powerful sense of having reached the midway point of the album.
The fact that Claire Torey just walked in, on the fly, and threw this down if F'in epic!

The guy talking in the background was 'The Hat.' He was the head roadie and you can hear him talking throughout much of the album.

Pink Floyd Was my Favorite band growing up. I made to a Roger Waters show based on Dark side of the moon. This song is wonderful...

I didn't see it mentioned in the comments, so apologies if I'm repeating this, but what makes the vocals on this track even more amazing is the fact that the singer on this was an unknown session singer, Clare Torry, who they asked to lay down some vocals as a fill for when they picked a singer for the final track. She ad libed the whole thing. She didn't know she was on the song until after the album came out..... and she was only paid something like $30 for her effort as a fill in.

This entire album is like one continuous song. They are made to transition into each other and work well with what comes before and after. It’s a miracle of an album.
As a child, before the internet and without listening to other interpretations, I always pictured this solo to be a woman in the pains of childbirth, progressing to holding the baby and then despair and sorrow at the state of the world to which she had gifted innocent life. The greatest sacrifice in a sense. Only a woman can sing this correctly.

Time and Great Gig really should be understood as one piece for all that. I know what you mean though, both are brilliant. Richard Wright's piano composition is beautifully realized as well.

When I do that, drugs are involved. I've done it both ways. My way is better.

I agree with both you... drugs definitely take the album to a different level! It's been many years since I've gotten rightly twisted, but I can remember what if felt like (without necessarily REMEMBERING much else). When I saw them in '94... we had some super dank bud that I'm sure one fatty lasted the whole show, granted, there were probably multiple doobies and I was too zombified to notice. I tripped for PF laser light shows at the planetarium, but didn't want to waste a concert being TOO out of it.
@@Mike_H76 That is the one way I didn't get to experience Darkside of the moon. The only time I saw them live was a small gig in a college before they became famous . They were weird and wonderful.

I wouldn't say the concert wasn't awesome, but they were slowing down a bit in '94 (Division Bell tour, album I didn't FULLY love).
I was in the 8th grade when this album was released.
The dark side of the moon is not a compilation of songs, it is a 45 minute legendary musical experience.
My recommendation...
You must listen to the entire album, beginning to end.
Headphones only. No earbuds!

I don’t know if either of them make my top 10 for Floyd songs, but that says more about how many great songs the band has and less about how great I think those particular songs are.
That's really nice of you to try it again. You can hear the tortured pain in her voice. Time and Great Gig do not fit together unless you know how one flows into the other. It's kind of like mixing chocolate and asparagus. Individually, they are wonderful components of a lovely dinner/dessert but they are not easily mixed together. To listen to this song you kind of have to know what you are going to be experiencing because it is so very different than much of PF's work. But it is still an emotional masterpiece.
I hold this to be one of the most incredible musical artifacts ever created. "TIME" addresses the span of a human life, and "GREAT GIG IN THE SKY" addresses the soul's journey afterward. The song is brilliant, but once you realize how this came to be in the studio, ua-cam.com/video/nWZ4ymOvflM/v-deo.html its brilliance becomes exponentially apparent. I love this band, and I love Clare Torry for the amazing gift she has given us with this song.

This song never fails to haunt me with emotions that are hard to understand. A mixture of the sound of fighting against death to acceptance and back. The vocals are so inspired and perfect, they could never be equaled. This is one of the great masterpieces of its era. Pink Floyd at the peak of their powers.

I remember 3 of us as girls/teenies playing this and trying to hit those notes, we each chose our roles and didn't get close lol. My Mom was driven insane with this album...
I've never looked up the meaning to this song but I always figured it was somebody coming to grips that they lost their mind and it kind of makes me well up inside.
It's about dying, the first part of the vocal is about fighting sickness the second part is about acceptance and finally letting go and passing.
Clair Torey… 50 years and counting I choke up every time.
It's a vocalization of the processes of dying and surrender and transcendence.

When listening to any given track on this album, I can tell you exactly what's going on in the Wizard of Oz.

An absolutely amazing song.
The best way to listen to this is to get into the headspace of someone you love is dying and their internal feelings of
1. Fear
2. Acceptance
3. Peace
If you listen really carefully in the third section you can hear her (Claire Torry) say "if you can hear this you are dying.
Believe me once you hear it you can't not hear it.
The fact that most people that hear it feel the emotions that it portrays (with no lyrics) makes it the masterpiece it is.

Claire Torrey`s version on this album is regarded as definitive. There are other fantastic singers who sing this beautifully..but this THE version.
It might sound out of place listening to just this track, but this album as all Floyd albums are conceptual albums and all the tracks are meant to be played in order from start to finish in one shot. Dark side of the Moon is 100% the greatest concept album and if you close your eyes you will be taken out of this world.

You were hypnotised! And rightly so!
During the making of Dark side of the Moon. They would walk through the building asking employees there, random questions. And recording their answer. Their answers were put in different songs on the album.
