  • First Ice of the season. Went up to a lake I've fished a couple times in the past seasons that I knew would have safe ice. 4-5 inches of solid ice I could've probably been ice fishing a week or so earlier. Unfortunately this lake has gotten worse for brook trout over the last couple season not sure wether that's from the shiner population or other factors. Definitely a little slow on the draw and missed a couple, hopefully I can clean that up in the next couple trips. Like comment share subscribe!
Marcum Pursuit Hd Lithium is the underwater camera I was using

Those Red Sided Shiners are really an unfortunate arrival to the lakes. Sure used to be a lot nicer before they showed up. The brookies do eat the minnows though. I caught one a few days ago and had several minnows and a big leach in its gut. I suspect the really big brookies are mainly just gorging of the minnows and avoiding having to feed when anglers are actually fishing. The biggest one I caught this year was after it has already become dark. Glad I found your channel. See you out on the ice.

That’s interesting I don’t think I’ve ever caught a brook trout after dark. Definitely makes the fishing harder when there is so many of them around but I’m curious how the next couple years go and if we do get some monster brook trout because of that?

@@okanaganoutdoors I think most people don't catch any after dark cause most people don't keep fishing that late. Most of the people are usually long gone by the time I leave lakes, haha. Yeah they have a ton of minnows to eat so I imagine some of them should keep getting pretty big. I find the minnow eaters are not as fat as the scud eaters. Check out the video I posted "ICE FISHING Brook Trout Night Fishing Snow Storm. Scroll to the end and see how dark it was when I got that last one. Many I almost got lost going off the lake in the snow storm in the dark.

@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures yea I’ve noticed most people don’t show up until way after sunrise and then leave before sunset which are usually the most productive times for me. I’ve tried fishing for brook trout in the dark with no results, after watching your video I might have to try again though. I just figured brookies were one of the species to ”turn off” after sunset.

@@okanaganoutdoors Yeah, I find the biggest brookies go on the chew when it is getting dim light. I watched a guy catch a toad... actually I couldn't barely see him. I was standing on the shore and he was 50 yards out and he nailed a 5 pound brookie. I seem to get all my biggest fish right after sunset when the light is fading fast. They keep coming through the first hour after dark pretty good.

Nice video! Just found you channel. I finally, finally got out first ice this past weekend in NW Ontario. I love brookies in winter, it's the best! Cheers

Thanks! Yea they are so fun but sometimes so tricky especially the big ones. We have had such warm weather in BC last couple days that not many of the lakes have safe ice yet

@okanaganoutdoors it was plus 4 here today. I took the day off work and did some sightfishing for splake. Got a few nice ones. No crazy action but beats being at work lol.

@@differentfins any day out is a good day in my books. I went out yesterday for brook trout and was slow day for me. They would come by and look or nudge whatever I put down but not commit

@okanaganoutdoors yeah early ice is hit and miss. I caught fish all three times I've gone out so far but I had to work hard for them. Fish 6 hours+ each day. For only a few fish. Cheers
