In parts of the Netherlands, mostly the Southern and eastern (catholic regions), Carnaval is a pretty important festival. Although mostly seen as by many people as a alcohol/drinking festival (Germany/Beligium be like: we should hang out some time), there also are some decently large parades with decoraded waggons (Brazil be like: we should hang out some time).

Aruba was part of the "Nederlandse Antillen" until 1986. We've been a separate constituent country 24 years before they restructured the system for the other islands. Also, for the most luxerious Carnival celebration in the Kingdom you have to go to Aruba. It's astonishing to see how invested people are in Carnaval, with feathers and all that, comparable to a smaller scale Rio celebration. They also celebrate Carnaval in the southern parts of the Netherlands, but it's not the same. People from the south do enjoy it though.

2:30 actually we switched from orange to red solemnly because red could be seen better on sea so dutch knew who there allies where and the enemies we're scared.
During our gold age we we're known to be the "best" in sea wars.
This was mostly because our commander Michiel de Ruyter was such a good tactician and made us win most wars.

Great video! Although, you didn't rectify that William of Orange was not really the first king (he and a lot of descendants had the title of 'stadholder' (which is the replacement of the count')). The Netherlands were a republic after all (one of the few in Europe in the 16th, 17th and 18th century). The Dutch Republic (literaly 'The Republic of the Seven United Netherlands) existed until 1795, when it was conquered by the French Republic and replaced by the Batavian Republic (1795-1806) , the Kingdom of Holland (1806-1810) and complete French occupation (1810-1813). After Napoleon had been defeated, the Netherlands became a kingdom. Many people think that William I (crowned in 1815) was the first king of the Netherlands, but strictly speaking it was actually the brother of emperor Napoleon I, Louis Bonaparte (who was also the father of emperor Napoleon III). He ruled as king of Holland from 1806 until 1810.

    Hi Barbs,
    Nice episode from the Netherlands!
I’m from the Netherlands and I was waiting for almost a year to see this episode coming!
You made a mistake about the IJsselmeer, it's in between the E-22 (more common known as A7 in the Netherlands, since E-22 is the known name as European road) and N-307 (not N-302).
I believe more than half of our populations is living below sea level, since half of the people are living in the western part of the Netherlands.
My suggestion when you visit the Netherlands is not go to the typically touristic site seeing’s. There's so much more than the Amsterdam channels.
There are large cultural difference between the northern, eastern, southern and western parts of the Netherlands. Try to see as much as possible in different areas in the Netherland.
Here are some of my suggestions:
    - The Pampus Fortress near Amsterdam in the former Zuiderzee (Southsea).
    - The large dike you mentioned which closed the Southsea and created a new lake called IJsselmeer (named after the river IJssel)
    - Old fisher villages (before land reclamation in the Southsea) like Kampen, Vollehove or Lemmer.
    - Lemmer is also a nice site to visit if you want to learn more about how we beat the water. There a big pumping station called Woudagemaal, which is the biggest steam pumping station ever constructed.
    - Urk is also a nice village to visit, also with the knowledge that it used to be an island but not anymore since the land reclamation
    - Open sand drifts (you mentioned them in the Netherlands episode) like the Veluwe
    - The 'Walden island' as you mentioned is also worth visiting. There are some excursion which allows you to walk to the island (because of low tide you it's possible)
Anyhow, I wish you a pleasant stay in the Netherlands.
    Keep up the good work!

The April fools thingy and it's correlation with the 80 years war is something I doubt about really. But the "war stuff" legend is explained like this:
During the Dutch revolt the Spanish Duke of Alva was sent to the low countries to stop them. But on the first of April (in 1572 I think) he lost Brielle, then named Den Briel.
When a war officer had to tell this loss to the Duke, he misunderstood the message and he thought that he lost his glasses
Op 1 april verloor Alva zijn bril
Op 1 april verloor Alva Den Briel
