though I had some problem with sea water It also ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxa-FNYUOM93a388gi9a4brtSCEVmrHgJH land for finding any things very easily. (thought it would work as normal due to it being water proof within certain parts of the detector), on dry land and sand worked well. My first one, so still have lots to learn

George Ansell was born in Carshalton, Surrey on 4 March 1826. His early career was in medicine and was an apprentice to a surgeon for 4 years. Chemistry was however to be his calling and he subsequently studied at the Royal College of Chemistry, followed by becoming an assistant to German chemist, August Hofmann. In 1856, Ansell joined the Royal Mint following recommendation to the Treasury by Thomas Graham, Master of the Mint. In 1859, a batch of gold was rejected by the Royal Mint. It was found to be too brittle and therefore deemed unfit for coin production. Chemical analysis revealed that traces of antimony, arsenic and lead were present. Due to Ansell's background in chemistry, he was able to persuade the mint to allow him to experiment on the rejected gold. As a result, he was able to produce an incredibly strong alloy that became the 167,539 'Ansell' sovereigns that were struck. For his efforts, Ansell was awared a £100 bonus. According to the Bank of England inflation calculator, this would equate to around £11,000 today. The only identifying feature of an Ansell sovereign is the presence of an additional line on the ribon used to tie back Victoria hair. With only 15 -25 Ansell sovereigns known to still exist, it's a very rare coin. In September 2012, the auctioneer Baldwin's offered for sale one of the finest Ansell sovereigns available. The hammer fell at £13,000 and with buyer's premium at 20%, it took the final purchase price to £15,600.

I have found an 1873 gold half sovereign (Melbourne minted) myself at a tidal water trap at Sydney Harbour myself 2 months ago, not a place you would expect to find one!

take off 5cm of dirt, then go over the same area again. repeat several times. maybe there´s more deeper down, and a mole just brought 4 of them up. (not kidding: I know stories of treasure trove, where people *eyeballed* the first coins on a mole hill and then started digging up a lot more!)

I would grid the find area, then carefully take off a foot of soil. Check the spoil removed and then detect again, just in case some are deeper and not within the equinox's range. Jason

Those first two were gold Guineas. The third looked the same. The fourth was either a gold sovereign, maybe a half sovereign. You can still buy gold Victorian sovereigns online. They cost about 20% more than a new sovereign. About £250.

May 19, 2019---Friends dad was into metal detecting, along with gold panning in Nevada & Calif. He'd hit ghost towns which weren't registered as historical places, along with old mining camps, abandoned and closed city dumps and places where shepherds would tend their flocks back in the day.He, a bud of his and his buds wife took off for California, with the guy buying his wife a metal detector as she wanted to try it herself, instead of using his. They get to their destination and right off the bat, the woman's using her metal detector which was NO WHERE near the spot the 2 guys had planned on working over. Then her detector went off from something under a rock and after a few minutes, pulls out a rotting, leather bag that had FIFTEEN GOLD COINS! No, don't remember what denomination they were as it's been 20 years since I was told this story. Talk about 2 guys doin' a face palm at her discovery. As to my friends dad, he'd been doing the detecting for 30+ years, with him having 3 filing cabinets, each with 4 drawers. Couldn't believe what he had inside just ONE DRAWER. Had FOUR paper racks filled with gold coins in protective sleeves that he had cleaned up. Why so many? He hadn't had time to put them in one of his THREE bank safety deposit boxes. Called all that his "retirement money". Old casino chips, dog tags from the 1920's, colored/partially colored bottles, some which were Coke bottles from the 20's, others were old pharmaceutical bottles, buttons, belt buckles, etc. I was kind of shocked when he quoted me prices on some of these things because I was thinking who's going to buy old dog tags issued by the city? How about $20 MINIMUM? Which shows people will collect any and everything. Thanks for the video.

@Old, bald fat man. That lady was really fortunate! it's the second best I've heard of. The best was a couple in Northern California walking on their large property with thei dog after a recent heavy rain. The wife (I think) saw something glimmering in the sun, which turned out to be a large coffee can which was filled with gold coins. There was a second can found as well, I believe. There were so many, that when they were sold or auctioned, the couple ended up with $10 million!
