For future reference, never do what you did at 13:48 again if you don’t want to risk ripping the chip off the board and permanently breaking the Xbox. Let it run a game for at least 30 minutes to warm it up so the heatsinks can be removed easier and safely.
Man i really like this type of videos, I'm following the same path on console repairing and this video and the ps3 one just felt like me opening up my first ps3 at home, surrounded by my own "repair shop" mess :') I hope you keep doing them without raising production values, I like your style :)
fun fact: a lot of times the rubber band in the disk drive of original Xbox's don't actually need to be replaced, in all actuality they are usually just dusty and taking it out and washing it with soap and water will fix the disk drive sticking.
Nice haven’t seen the vid yet but I’ve always been really damn curious to watch people do this shit! Keep up the great work nice to see something different don’t let people discourage you!
Sorta comparable to cars in the sense of learning if that makes any sense, start off with the older shit, don’t be afraid to make mistakes it’s all a learning experience so have fun with it!
Always remove the clock capacitors (except 1.6 consoles), just to future proof the console. You don't need to replace it. Next step should be to softmod and TSOP flash the console, and swap in a larger hdd... then you have an awesome machine even for 2020.
Actually the other one is Actually The Hitachi-LG which are also the best ones and just as reliable as the Samsung SDG 605 ones. Both Samsung SDG 605s and Hitachi LGs are definitely the DVD drives u want for your Xbox. The Phillips drive are also pretty good too. But I agree about those Thompson drives tho, since they are very unreliable and complete trash, it doesn’t read discs consistently well either.
That seems to be common with the disc drive sticking on those OG Xbox consoles. I miss mine so much. Sold it back in the day to upgrade to the 360. Back then, it was my only way to afford newer consoles, but I'm definitely considering picking up another one eventually.
Great tip for everyone reading this who has a passion for their modded OG Xbox, cut 2 of the rubber feet in 2 so it would fit half of the recess of the 4 so you can get to the 4 screws without pulling off the feet, good for when you change up the drive, do the caps or mods. Other obvious tips would be to chip it with an Aladdin XT Plus 2 as it's easier to swap drives, the chip is now a bit more expensive than it was pre-covid but still worth it, some people like the soft mod and do it ok but others not, check the Capacitors (caps) are not bulging or leaking and remove the clock capacitor even if it looks OK (not v1.6), you can make it SATA with an IDE to SATA adapter, a low profile one from fleabay will cost £3-ish and you NEED to replace the special IDE cable XBOXs have to a 'slightly' longer '80' wire standard PC one. I have a Halo green XBOX with a 2TB drive with all this done to it for less than £100, there's other bits you 'can' do too but this is the nuts and bolts of a decent modded one.
My Xbox sometime have the issue of the Green and Red light flashing How do i fix this problem? Or it's a problem that i don't need really to worry about it? I'm playing with it for the lasts 6 month.
I have a broken an xbox 360 consoles. It's broken and it doesn't have the cables that it originally came with. Do you know where I can recycle it? Or do with it? I just want to get rid of this junk, but I don't want to throw it in the trash if someone can use what it has inside to make something else with it. Seems like such a waste.
The Samsung SDG-605 DVD ROM drive has a frequency of failure when it comes to the rubber band it out stretches and no longer works so what you can do is dunk in hot water which will shrink it to give it better traction which will cause it to work
you can boil the old drive belts. that helps sometimes. makes them shrink back in size to what they used to be. but long term you're better off just replacing them.
also just delete the clock capacitors. it's not worth the hassle of trying to replace them. much safer for the life of the console as the new capacitors could eventually leak as well.
Glad to see some new content from from you Jurrasic Ninja. I had this guy at my local retro game store try and tell me that the original xbox was a garbage system and that the PS2 was twice as powerful! I was literally left speechless for a second and when I tried going into detail about the xbox's hardware he just kept interrupting me and telling me how bad he thought Halo and Gears are. I guess he doesn't know that most games are multiplatform lol. Next time I go in there I'll have to show him some of your Side by Sides. I hope life is well for you and yours bro keep doing what you love!
hey man, if you need any information on repairing the Xbox 360 consoles hit me up, I've been repairing these things for years and years! My best advice to you is too ignore ANYTHING that says to use a heatgun, or to block fans, or replace heatsink clamps with bots. None of that will fix anything, simply cause more damage. Great video btw and welcome to game console repair!
For red rings. I usually heat it up with heat gun on CPU GPU only. Replace thermal paste, and keep the x clamps. Put back together. Let it run in game a few hours for testing. What would you suggest for red ring other than this?
Hi So this is a temporary solution and the red ring will come back in a few days/weeks/months. There are dozens of different causes for 3 red lights to appear, and I've done alot of documentation and research on it. This video will show you how to find the secondary error: ua-cam.com/video/netR2qoyfvE/v-deo.html I have put all my findings into a database where you can lookup the codes: errors.octalsconsoleshop.com The most common "RROD" issue that plagued the consoles is the 0020, 0102, 0110, and 1022 (E 74). All of these are usually a failing graphics chip, and the chip must be replaced on a BGA machine (I wish they were socketed!) The reason the heatgun method temporarily works is the same as various laptops with failing chips, the heat temporarily messes with the failing die/flip chip solder bumps and causes it to work for a short period longer. However, the effect is temporary. This is why reballing is also a bad fix most of the time, as the same defective chip is being put back onto the board. There is a very large thermal mass on the chip too, and a heatgun will likely not melt the balls enough to reflow them, and if you heat it longer, then the chip will die from too much heat. Especially with the lack of flux. Hope this makes sense, let me know if you have any questions!
Can you try to fix a fat ps3 with YLOD? is getting pretty popular this new method of replacing NEC capacitors with tantalum capacitors and they claim that there's a 90% chance that those NEC capacitors are the cause of YLOD on the old fat PS3 and some slim models

You need remove the clock capacitor before it destroys the motherboard of the xbox , the bad capacitor Is on all motherboard models EXCEPT v1.6, the acid It will corroded it's way through the capacitor and leaked all over their motherboards, causing permanent damage. Essentially if this capacitor is not removed, the console is just a ticking time bomb that will eventually kill itself.
