thanks v much for this man it's really helpful to see your setup, i have been doing similar but without nearly the clarity that you have !! so thanks for helping
It's not on my to-do list right now. My channel is more about guitar stuff & chords, I doubt more in-depth technical keyboard stuff would appeal to the majority of my subscribers... but if ever a lot of people are asking for it, why not?
Very cool. Thank you. Myself I prefer to not run with a laptop but I'm kind of old fashioned that way. I'm using my old Korg Kronos and my Korg King Korg and sometimes my Korg Wavestation EX. I've found Korg synths to be reliable and they also sound very good. Thanks again and I'm looking forward to listening to your band.
Mainstage will recognize each keyboard separately if you set up each keyboard in your Mac Audio Midi setup. Different midi channels is then unnecessary. 👍
Excellent breakdown, Antoine! Very informative. Thank you very much! I'm considering getting an Arturia Keylab 88, myself, for live use. Right now, I'm using a Roland X7 workstation with a Roland JV-90 as an extra, external controller to control the Fantom. This allows me to have both keyboards with multiple zones on each keyboard, producing multiple sounds/samples from the Fantom. Your setup is very impressive, though (not sure I'm ready to go "full computer"...LOL). Since I am not a piano player (my main instrument is rhythm guitar), I wanted to get a MIDI controller that has a "semi-weighted" action, but there aren't many options out there with the features I want (knobs, faders, pads, aftertouch, etc.). I'm hoping the action on the Keylab 88 isn't too stiff. I also need to get a portable Mac. I spent a bunch of money on a tiny, powerful PC, but Mainstage really looks like what I want to use, in terms of features and ease-of-use. Anyway, thanks again!!!
I tried using USB on stage for live performances and got allot of hum and feedback from my rig....Switched to a USB to midi I connect box and all is good. USB has no grounding whereas midi is totally grounded
Just check for ''Quik Lok Keyboard Stands'' and you get many different models, I'm sure you will find the one you need. I don't remember exactly which model mine is, but you can check it out here: www.quiklok.com/instrument-series/keyboard-stands/
Great video. I just bought a Mac so I can play around with Mainstage. I currently gig with a Roland FA and Prophet (or Nord). Would love to get it down to one kbd. I have the keylab 49, might need a bigger one. Maybe I could use my FA07 as a controller.
I have a Keylab (61 black ed.) myself controlling a Korg Kronos. I love the software it‘s shipped with. Both Analog lab II and the UVI Grand sound really awesome! I love Mainstage too because it’s a huge bang for the buck!! However I‘m not a fan of Laptops onstage bc they may make people think I‘m faking. 🤔
Monochrome Seasons No it‘s not. I bought it early this year and I‘ve just been lucky. I whouldn‘t have bought a white one because I wanted it to match my other keyboard which happens to be black. 😁 Black edition is discontinued several months ago I don‘t know... it seems so. Or it‘s really just me lol Btw, how do you like the hammer action keyboard on your 88? It is one of the cheapest hammer keyboards you can find
That's the problem with a guitar dominated band. I came from a classic rock band, 70s, 80s and had a fair mix with keyboard songs. I'll check your video, thanks
Hi Antoine ... Have you had any issues with the sound being stuck ( key on key off command problem ) on mainstage during Live show.that happens to rarely me even i ve a good Mac as well. What do you suggest to me...
It happened to me once, but it's generally when you have too many assigned parameters. It was the leslie of the hammond organ interfering with my complicated settings with the sustain pedal. So I'd say, keep your sessions light (not hundreds of patches) and limit the interactions between assigned parameters. What happened more often to me is the computer suddenly not recognizing the audio interface... just rebooting the computer usually does the trick!
can you compare your rig with real synths? is it more or less reliable? they say that dealing with a computer is is fraught inevitable with bugs and stuff.
Awesome video the Arturia is certainly tempting for its sheer range of buttons etc what do you think of the action for a really proficient pianist like how fast it the reponse etc. cheers :)
The action is decent for a keyboard controller as lightweight as this one. Definitely good enough for my needs. But I have to say, now that it's been a few years, the keys got looser and looser the more I brought the keyboard to rehearsals, venues, and on planes, even if I tried to pad it as much as I could and bought the most sturdy hardcase I could find. Now, I bought another one and stored it in Europe so that I wouldn't have to bring it on planes. I think for a real pianist, this is only 'decent' ... you might get some better and more realistic action on some bigger, weigthed keyboards. And like I said, there are some question marks on durability when you move it a lot. So for a guy like me who plays prog and all sorts of parts (piano, strings, moogs, B3 organs, electric pianos, etc), I like the flexbility and amount of buttons, sliders, pads. But strictly for piano this is not the best option, in my opinion!
Salut Antoine. Très bonne ta présentation. Je viens d’acheter le 88 Keylab mk2 et je ne trouve pas comment faire fonctionner le Lesley en rotation directement sur le clavier comme tu le fais à envi. 4min 40 sec. Merci encore. Ciao!

Hello. Im a newbie using midi keyboard live on stage. Can you please help me on how to connect everything from laptop to midi to sound card to the mixer and how do you monitor your sound?
From my computer, it's a USB cable that plugs into the interface. From the interface, it's two 1/4inch cables that go on each of my studio monitors when I'm at home, or generally on a D.I box when I'm playing live (and that D.I box is handled by the soundman). Another detail is that I'm using TS cables for my studio monitors, but regular TRS cables when I plug live into a D.I box.

Is it possible to have multiple layouts per project? It would be awesome to patch switch to only a drum pads view for playing back samples and then patch switch again to a synth layout for when you're just playing the synths.
Are there any instructionals on how to configure and set up mainstage 3 with arturia? I just got my keylab 88mk Ii and I’d like to have a template and assign the faders etc.
You showed that you could change the patches using the forward button. Can you also change patches using the knob and see the patch names while changing them on the keyboard display (just if you don't want to put the laptop in front of you)? Can you also assign each patch to one of the pads?
I've never found a way to display the patches name on the keyboard display instead. I don't think it's impossible, but it's probably way more complicated. I go for the simplest way when I can! And yes, you can reassing all the knobs, buttons, sliders to different things on each patch if you want. You can assign things at the concert level, set level (all the patches within the same song), or patch level.
Hi, nice video. I also have the Keylab 88, the sack you have. I don't know English, sorry. I wanted to ask you, how do you change the midi channel while you play, on the keylab keyboard ... NOT on the Midi Control Center ... thanks. nice channel, I joined v
I do not change the MIDI channel while I play. I setup the Keylab 88 on channel 1, and the Keylab 49 on channel 2 and I never change that while I play. Or was this your question?
Bonjour Chloe! C'est la marque ''Quik Lok'', ils ont plein de modèles de stand comme celui montré dans ma vidéo. www.quiklok.com/instrument-series/keyboard-stands/
Hello nice video! I have a problem: Is possible to assign program change of the patch on the main Key? I have keylab 88 mkII and i Need live to switch the patch with physical buttons. How fix this? Thanks 😊
Would that help the sound of mainstage to speaker if I use audio interface?? I’m currently using headphone jack to speaker and the sound is so horrible. 🥲 it feels like it has no bass. Not full sound it doesnt have noise but just not full sound what it use to have when I use my headphone.
when i use this midi keybord , may i need to buy more one mini midi keybord for mainstege to use it ? sometimes to use mainstage for worship need different paten and control different effert.
Yes, you can pretty much assign any parameter to any knob, slider, pad, button, etc. I use the sliders for volume, buttons for patch changes and pads to trigger samples.
Hi Antoine, I’m currently doing a residency and use a keylab 61, Yamaha p115, and new MacBook 16gb M1. I’ve been having issues with functions that I assign not sticking, such as assigning a filter one-knob plugin to any knob on the mk2. When I open, close and reopen, it doesn’t keep some of the functions I assign. Secondly, tonight, while performing, my pitches on both the p115 and mk2 started jumping in pitch. I could only tell by ear, and putting a pitch reader plug-in on my main output to verify that a C was making a Bb pitch. I had a temporary work around that worked for a half hour and then went back to having a mind of its own. I know how long winded this is, but I’m desperate for help and was wondering if you’ve had any of these same issues. Thanks!
Thanks for the video! Question - what is your MacBook sitting on? Is it the keyboard, or does your keyboard stand have an accessory to hold your laptop as well. Also, when you are performing on stage, where do you place your audio interface? On the ground?
Daryl O Yes it's a an extra extension accessory mounted with a screwdriver behind the keyboard. It comes with the Keylab 88 when you buy it! Very easy to install and remove. And for the audio interface, generally I ask for some kind of table that I can put it close to my setup for extra safety. If I can't, it's not the end of the world, I would put it just on top of its box on the ground.
Thanks - this is really helpful. I just checked the Arturia website and the extension accessory is such a great idea. I'm just looking at options now for stand, accessories or small table. I think at the end of the day, musicians just want a slick set up with good access, that can be packed up and packed down easily, gig after gig.
I have DIYed a keyboard stand with flat surface for my interface (right beneath the keys) , then velcroed keyboard bottom (49-61) and velcroed keyboard stand, and finally second tier stand. It all packs into keyboard bag and into the trolley that can be moved easily along with other gear. Unfortunately its a pain to assamble / dissasamble . Takes way too much time. I imagine having some sort of a portable speaker might help in some really bad monitoring conditions, also having interface that close means I can plug my phones easily. Sometimes I ask soundman to send me monitor mix into my interface (umc404), where I can dial between input and output in my phones. This is really cool, as I have good representation and control vs bad monitors and ear-bleeding levels. Fighting with guitarists for monitor is fun only couple of times.
Hey! Wonderful. I also use Mainstage 3. I`ve a Keylab 61 and a yamaha P-90. Only one question. How did you manage to link Keylab transport keys to patch select?. Thanks!
Yes! You can assign the volumes of each instruments on the faders. For example, I always keep 4 faders down, 4 faders up, and 1 in the middle by default. The faders down are to bring additionnal instruments up, the faders up are to remove instruments if needed, and the fader in the middle is to adjust the volume of my samples if needed.
@@AntoineMichaudGuitarLooping Thank you so much for the answer! It helped me a lot. I want to get a setup similar as yours for gigs, and I was deciding between using a Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol s88 or the Arturia Keylab88. I think the Arturia is more versatile so I think I´ll buy it instead of the KK, as I want to use also my sound libraries from another brands. Thank you so much. Also, do you know if I could load on MainStage 3 other Kontakt libraries ? Thanks in advance! Nice video between!
Yes, I also do this! You can integrate Kontakt libraries, or any other 3rd party instruments/plugins into Mainstage 3. But the more you add libraries in your Concert files, the more it takes power. I recommend having maximum RAM in your laptop. I have 16 gigs of RAM and never ran into any lag/bug/shutdown/problem during a show!
Antoine Michaud thank you again! I have a MacBook Pro from late 2017 with 8gb ram. I wouldn’t really use many different sounds but they are quite big . Thank you man! I’ll get the Arturia keylab88 then and also MainStage 3! I really appreciate your help!
Great setup. Could you tell us which keyboard stand you used in this video? I really like this stand cuz it can hold two keyboards and the laptop as well. Thank you!
It was pretty complicated actually. But everything is doable in Mainstage! The sustain pedal is plugged into the 88 notes controller. Then, inside mainstage, I have dragged 2 simple buttons and assigned each of them to CC64 (which is often the code associated with sustain). I assigned the first button to the 88 keys controller and the second button to the 49 keys controller. Finally, I told the second button to be active whenever the first button is also active. So everytime I touch the sustain pedal, it activates the sustain for the second keyboard, so I can sustain both of them at the same time. If ever I don't need sustain on both keyboard on one specific patch, I can deactivate that function on that specific patch only. Unfortunately, this is all I'm able to tell you. I was able to pull that off one year ago and duplicated every single patch I made since then. So I would not even be able to make a clear tutorial on it as the exact steps on how to do it are kind of blurry in my head. Sorry!
Hey bro! So after you connect everything to your computer how to output the sound to a speaker play live gigs? Do you use an aux cable and insert it in a mixer? Thanks great video!
Basically, my audio interface is connected USB to my computer. So for shows, I send 2 instruments cables from the output of my audio interface to a stereo DI (or 2 seperate DI boxes) and the signal is sent to the board to the soundman. The audio interface is the middle step between my computer and the mixer to make sure I will have high sound quality, low latency, and have a place where I can connect cables and send my signals.
What do you do if the MacBook crashes or something happens and it won't turn on? That's what makes me nervous about playing live with a laptop and midi controller
We have 2 keyboardists in my band, so we do what we can with one if that happens (never happened that it crashed completely, but we got a few bugs). It's always better if you can use a real keyboard as a controller and revert to the real sound banks in case the laptop crashes. But in the end, it's impossible to plan for every single thing that could happen.
Honestly, not the best. That's why I have a second keyboard on top for fast lines and leads. It has an incredible piano touch, I love the touch, but it's not exactly the best for ''virtuosic'' purposes, if that makes sense.
@@AntoineMichaudGuitarLooping I see. I find it strange that there not even one manufacturers who makes an 88 controller keyboard with premium keybed (fatar tp40 or manufacturers made keybed) and lots of knobs, sliders, pitch wheel, mod wheel or stick. I mean, controller keyboards are supposed to be the future some people say. Are premium 88 controller keyboards would be bad for business?

You showed that you could change the patches using the forward button. Can you also change patches using the knob and see the patch names while changing them on the keyboard display (just if you don't want to put the laptop in front of you)? Can you also assign each patch to one of the pads?
I've never found a way to display the patches name on the keyboard display instead. I don't think it's impossible, but it's probably way more complicated. I go for the simplest way when I can! And yes, you can reassing all the knobs, buttons, sliders to different things on each patch if you want. You can assign things at the concert level, set level (all the patches within the same song), or patch level.
@@AntoineMichaudGuitarLooping thanks for the info. Was helpful, just bought it!
Hi, nice video.
I also have the Keylab 88, the sack you have. I don't know English, sorry. I wanted to ask you, how do you change the midi channel while you play, on the keylab keyboard ... NOT on the Midi Control Center ... thanks.
nice channel, I joined
v
I do not change the MIDI channel while I play. I setup the Keylab 88 on channel 1, and the Keylab 49 on channel 2 and I never change that while I play. Or was this your question?
Hello nice video! I have a problem: Is possible to assign program change of the patch on the main Key? I have keylab 88 mkII and i Need live to switch the patch with physical buttons. How fix this? Thanks 😊
Would that help the sound of mainstage to speaker if I use audio interface?? I’m currently using headphone jack to speaker and the sound is so horrible. 🥲 it feels like it has no bass. Not full sound it doesnt have noise but just not full sound what it use to have when I use my headphone.
Make more videos on how to use main stage with Arturia
Which is the best? Ableton live or Mainstage ?
Merci !
16gb Ram is not much but I suppose it will do in live
when i use this midi keybord , may i need to buy more one mini midi keybord for mainstege to use it ? sometimes to use mainstage for worship need different paten and control different effert.
Is there a way to assign the patch sound to a drum pad for easy sound change?
Yes, you can pretty much assign any parameter to any knob, slider, pad, button, etc. I use the sliders for volume, buttons for patch changes and pads to trigger samples.
Kindly recommend any programme that can run on windows apart from Mac
Hi Antoine,
I’m currently doing a residency and use a keylab 61, Yamaha p115, and new MacBook 16gb M1.
How do you assign your wav files to the pads?
How about the reliability with a lot of gigs? Does the Arturia and the Focusrite works fine after a long tour?
Hey! Wonderful. I also use Mainstage 3. I`ve a Keylab 61 and a yamaha P-90. Only one question. How did you manage to link Keylab transport keys to patch select?. Thanks!
anybody knows the answer to this? xD i have a keylab essential 88 and i would like to use the pads on it to be able to select through my patches.
@@joeltan8925 you have to create a virtual button in Mainstage via the layout tab, then assign the hardware button
@@PatrickStefan finally, after a year. xD than you! i will try that. :)
can you assign sounds to that faders so you can change of sound just turning the correct fader on and turning down the faders with other sounds?
Thank you!
Awesome
How do you able to control the 2 keyboards with one sustain pedal? where is the pedal sustain plugged-in?
Sorry!
Thank man, appreciate the reply. Awesome rig you have there.
How do you set up one sustain pedal for both keyboards?
to be honest I'm really just wondering about the stands
How can I convert .Farx files to wav or MP3 to sample into my Alesis Fusion sampler?
Hye Antoine. Thanks for this videos and all the others !
Are you still using only softsynths on stage with Mainstage ?
Does the keylab 88 comes with Arturia lab software?
What sort of CPU usage do you get during a show?
How is the keylab88 keybed for fast repetitions and virtuosic piano playing and responsiveness?
Is Mainstage still availble?
Whoa! Your singer used to be Benoit David, right?
Yes! Do you know him?
@@AntoineMichaudGuitarLooping sadly no, but I liked his time with Yes and have heard of Mystery.
How have you set up thr sustain-pedal switch?
how do you change your sound during a live peformance? by hand?
I want to know about the latency? Can be possible ? Or with Mainstage 3 you don’t have latency ?
Which software/setup do you recommend to lauch backing tracks live for a one man band show??
Did you ever get an answer?

How do you get the controllers to change which plugin they are talking to, or do you just lose the built in v collection finctions with using two?
Where does the sound come out from
In this case, from my studio monitors. You are seeing them at 1:10
How you have connected the speakers
My Focusrite Scarlett audio interface is connected via USB to the computer, and I plugged the speakers on the output of my audio interface.
Does the sound come out of the keyboard or an interface?
Interface. I show it briefly at 1:10!
Why are You useing interface to play live? Why don't just plug laptop audio output into PA?
