Key moment from the second movie that a lot of people tend to overlook is that Peter .B is literally the only spiderman to successfully catch Miles during the chase and talk to him by thinking ahead in the scene prior.
Exactly, he’s the only Spider-Man wise enough to understand where Miles was going, and the only one who was (almost) able to talk him out of his plan - like an ACTUAL hero, instead of trying to beat the shit out of him.
Also...he's literally the only (that's shown) Spider individual in the movie who's been through his canon events, got knocked down in life, and grew beyond it. Not saying the others haven't (we don't know yet) or can't, but seeing someone go from his state in the first movie to a happy, married father should be awe-inspiring, not a point to ridicule him. People ridiculing Peter B. Parker for finding happiness despite his canon events truly have a warped view of life and fulfilment.
Thank you for bringing this out, that was such an underrated scene in my opinion especially in how Peter B was trying to convey to Miles how he still cared about him (despite all the craziness going on lol)
People just seem to be mad about the pretty traditional jaded mentor trope when its done to an existing character. Like it's fine if a character we don't know has an elaborate and tragic backstory that made them jaded until they met the protagonist but if an established character has a bunch of tragic stuff happen to them they have to remain a shining paragon hero. Can't become a knight in sour armor to borrow the TV tropes term. And people mad that Peter is a bit of a goof ball seem to just ignore basically every depiction of him he's a nerd whose quick with a quip and does a lot of things that he thinks are amusing as long as they don't get in the way of him actually stopping the bsd guy
I would have thought the fact that Peter B went from depressed and divorced to reconciled and a Dad with a kid who clearly loves him as a major W. He actually seems to be the only one who has his life together in the movie compared to the others.
I didn’t find the idea why he kept bringing his toddler along with them a little puzzling. That’s not really consistent with being a loving father, putting your child in mortal danger constantly.

I always thought peter B served the purpose of being a subversion of a teenage peter parker. Instead of a spiderman struggling to balance his life between being a teenager and superhero, Peter B is an adult struggling to be an adult but still capable of being spiderman. Peter B is by no means a joke or a punching bag, even in spite of his rustiness he's able to take the lead and be spiderman when he needs to.
He literally recovers from the slump by the second one too, idk how people find him a loser. Even from a toxic masculinity perspective he still gets the sexy redhead and is better than most Spidermen in the Spider Society. Peter B is the only who catches up to Miles and does a better job than anyone else of trying to talk him down.

Peter bringing Mayday along makes sense. First of all, the Spider Society is probably one of the safest places in the multiverse, it's just where the Spideys hang out between missions so I don't see how Mayday would be in danger. As for why he brought her along during the chase, I think the reason Peter brought Mayday along despite knowing it's bad parenting is because he really thought she would help change Miles' mind.

I love Peter B Parker because he is subversion of the typical Spider-man story. Normally, no matter the odds, Peter always gets back up and keeps going. But with Peter B, it shows that like in real life, sometimes its too much and we might stay down for a bit. Peter for 22 years let being Spider-man consume him. It ruined relationships, friendships, his marriage, he was afriad of having a child becuase of the danger, the physical and emotional toll it brings and having to bury his Aunt May. So of course he is going to be burnt out, no one is perfect! But when he met Miles and saw what a terrific kid he is, he probably saw a lot of himself in him and it gave him the shot of hope to get up and fight again and wanting to become a dad. It's not a mockery of the Peter Parker character, in fact it shows a real matured Peter learning not to give up after life put him through it. The film makers show more respect to Peter in two films more than the current comic writers who have him cucked and not letting him mature.

I think the one thing that ticked me off is how he actually agreed with Val's plans to steal vibranium from Wakanda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Like, WHAT?!

And Wakanda keeping Vibranium from being spread like candy to nations that seek to abuse it (like how the world treats nuclear weaponry) has never been the issue. The issue is how Wakanda didn't use vibranium to help out in issues they could conceivably intervene in. A problem addressed by Wakanda helping in Infinity War and Endgame and revealing themselves to the world after the first movie.
I feel like the drinker has a really hard time interpreting nuance like he can pretty easily tear apart a bad movie like rise of skywalker or quantumania but whenever a movie holds back layers to it’s plot or themes he just sort of waves it away as forcing “the message” (which lets be real is just him complaining about “woke” stuff without actually saying it) or claiming contrivance or things like that. A perfect example of this being in his Midsommar review where he could only brush the film at surface level and just called it “feminist propaganda”
I definitely know people like this in real life and I usually just call them "action movie fans" They love James Bond (evidence by the fact that he literally wrote a James Bond knockoff series) mission impossible, etc. And immediately stop watching if it's like a musical or something

6:49 it’s hysterical cuz that stuff is precisely why Peter B. was my fav Spider-Man in “Into”. I love that character trope. Ppl like Critical Drinker would assume based off my identity that I would prefer Gwen or Miles (they got their spotlight in “Across”, and I love them as much as Peter B. now), but i ended up loving the straight white cis Peter that was old and a mess. I think it says more about Critical Drinker that be perceives any weakness or flaw in character as bad, and totally wrong or mockery if it’s a white guy. Everyone has their bad days, and should be given the chance and help to bounce back.
I think most male protagonists follow a formula of starting out on a great note, then stumbling for a bit before hitting their stride and saving the day in the end. But the stumble has to be big enough so that the audience feels some kind of relatability and investment but not so big that male audiences feel the protagonist is heading into a "pathetic" direction. Characters who save the day in movies are not usually constructed to feel very deeply, and this could be due to a variety of reasons (movie run time, societal expectations, etc). Having someone like Peter Parker get hit hard and show that might feel disconcerting to many because he doesn't bounce back after one inspiration speech. But I like Peter's character because he shows realism. I think many male characters like him get mixed reception because they subvert established tropes of what a main character should be. Newt Scamander from Fantastic Beasts in the first movie received the same treatment. Many critics called him pathetic and even feminine because he wasn't loudly taking center stage and aggressively fighting the bad guy, and instead takes a more understanding and nurturing approach that his "opponents" often needed but never received.

Perfect Peter isn't even an acurrate depiction of the character (he can afford his own a BATCAVE for god's sake), they made him that way to add to the theme of Miles' fear of not living up to expectations, and to contrast with the more flawed and realistic Peter B Parker.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but i agree with you on the struggles of Peter Parker and the responsibilities of being Spider-man. Heck, there a Spider-man Novel that i own, where he's a successful college professor, is married to Mary Jane and still struggles with maintaining his daily life while trying to stop a new Carrion created by a cult trying to acquire the DarkHold to summon Cthon and destroy/takeover the world. the point being Peter Parker as himself or Spiderman will always have problems to overcome and that is why we love him as a relatable character.
I think it's kinda interesting that as a whole Spider-Man fandom unironically has kinda embraced this shlubby cynical turned dating father take on Peter Parker despite what this drinker clown. In some ways It feels line an unintentional commentary on the current state of the current state of Spider-Man in the comics. But it also shiws alot love for him we see the reverence Miles gains for him iver time.

Race swapping like in the little mermaid remake (danish folklore) and the new Snow White abomination (German folklore) are absolutely attempts to destroy European culture and their stories and that horrible. As someone who's seen The Critical Drinker long enough the best way to describe him is this: On rare and I mean rare occasion when he gets something right he gets it painfully accurate but most of the times it's just wrong and bad takes like this. This is the first time we've seen a Spiderman get a big break. He got a wife and kid and he's living the good life. You can't really say that for most Spiderman especially the comics. I honestly think at the end of the day he's doing this to troll and it's all a bit or he's just got a screw loose.

The problem isn't the political nature (most media is political if not all of it to varying degrees), it's the conclusion and prescriptions that are the problem. Basically really bad politics aka the "WOKE MIND VIRUS™️" bs. I used to watch stuff like that too which erks me. As somebody who used to be one of his audiences back then, I will admit I did enjoy his videos in the past and I agreed at how batshit annoying it is how movies have become propaganda and have constant pandering. I think it's funny that with the plot hole discussion, anyone will call anything a plot hole. The male and female leads don't get together? Plot hole. Antagonist was easy to kill? Plot hole. Character wears impractical clothes during fight scene? Plot hole. It is such a dumb criticism that I don't know if people even remember what a plot hole is.
TCD when characters have flaws and have to go through character development: This character is being mocked! Movies tell us we are not perfect as we are! TCD when characters start off perfect and have little to no development: This character is a Mary Sue! Movies tell us we have to be born perfect to succeed!
Peter B is actually one of the few times he's gotten past university without the timeline resetting. He's lived into his 40s and has been through some shit that most versions of him never reach because they're always in their prime. Spider-verse really trod new ground for the character by finally giving us a serious and grounded portrayal of what a middle-aged, cynical old spider-man would be like and that deserves some credit.
admittedly I used to like The Critical Drinker's videos But that was when I was very upset of how the entire Star Wars sequel trilogy turned out and one of the people who wasn't fond of The Last Jedi The VERY MOMENT I moved on from Star Wars it's when I saw that he ain't as good of a critique as I thought he was, especially after his videos on Midsommar, WandaVision, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, and Barbie And for whatever reason, this man is so obssessed with anything involving Brie Larson cause he's been constantly going over The Marvels lately Ironically enough, Guardians 3 and Across the Spiderverse did have political undertones whereas the films like The Little Mermaid remake and The Marvels are just "woke political nonsense" when one is just (another) Disney live action remake that actually turns out to decently retell a Disney animated classic and the other is just a fun superhero teamup which so happens to be women. Critikal drinker is who you watch when you want to be cynical. Same with people like I Hate Everything or Possum or whatever his name is, they can be entertaining at times but it can be extremely view warping. I remember Charlie doing a video called like “movies are dying” or something and it was kind of a clickbait title but for some people that is what they think. This year I have gone to the movie theater an ungodly amount, I’ve seen John wick 4, Mario movie, transformers rise of the beasts, across the spiderverse, the D&D movie, Renfield, movies are only dying if you just watch mcu movies, support the theater and watch movies that simply look fun or interesting, not just the ones that are reboots remakes or connect to sone large expanded universe

I love peter Bs portrayal, he is jaded but he still sticks to his principles and tries to do the right thing, with all going in his life, he still manages to be spiderman. I personally love his relationship with miles and his general attitude in both movies.

At the start of the movie, Peter B. Parker is alone at the lowest point of his life - he's cynical and jaded from years of fighting endless battles for little thanks, having multiple business ventures fizzle to nothing before his very eyes, and having the love of his life leave him because he was afraid of being a father. The movie doesn't go out of its way to mock him for this, beyond a couple light-hearted jokes, because realistically any one of us could end up in this sort of situation, or know someone who has. Which brings him to being a fan favourite because he still rises up to the mantle despite his imperfections. He mentors Miles despite his initial apprehension to do so, he stands up for Miles against the other Spiders, and is ultimately rewarded for it by getting to see Miles become the spider he always believed he could be, and having Miles then give him the confidence boost he needed to finally go back home and fix his shit. He isn't "miraculously redeemed" at the end, his redemption comes throughout the movie, a slow burn that roars to a flame at the end with him getting the girl, becoming a father, and finally getting to be happy!
My issue with his critique towards Peter bringing his daughter over stems from that simple fact. This man’s been through a lot and he’s finally found joy he hasn’t had in forever. Is it a little annoying that he’s not a bit more serious? A tiny bit to me, but I can cut him some slack lol he deserved this happiness. And he’s still serious when he needs to be so it’s not *too* obtrusive
Critical Drinker's perception is a (likely depressed) single cynical alchoholic; watching a character (roughly in his demographic) go through and overcome real depression, and having a healthy bond with his wife and incredibly dedicated role in his daughter's upbringing - not by necessity nor societal expectation, but because he LOVES her I dont expect him to understand being a 'real' man and a 'real' father when he's made a living and reputation by embracing what Peter grew from He's just another man who's at his own bottom, being told and telling others that it isnt his fault but some 'woke mind virus' oppressing him because.... comic character has different skin and/or organs than him?
Channels like critical drinker are necessary in todays day and age but I noticed that as time goes on they plunge deeper into their critic persona and just start shitting on everything cause they’re the “SJW critic of the people”. Sometimes they grasp at straws which is unfortunate.

People watched The Nostalgia Critic once and assumed it was unironic (the whole character, whether he's correct or not, is meant to be a caricature of immature fanboys hence the "nostalgia"). Tbh I feel like people take Peter bringing his baby along way too seriously. Like, its a cartoon, all the characters do things that wouldn't be possible irl without dying, and Mayday has superpowers. Spiderwoman's baby also likely has superpowers, which is why it's not getting scrambled.
I really, REALLY fucking wish more channels would talk about Critical Drinker like this. His review of the Barbie movie, along with the comments, made me physically ill. But I haven't seen ANY other decent critics call him out and his fanbase is a borderline cult. And now, thanks to his newest review, he caught some women who hated the film just because the theaters didn't select one of the many direct to dvd films and play that instead.
Pillar of Garbage is one youtuber who make some sense and presents a fresh and nuanced perspective to these marvel movies. He even discusses about old TV shows so that's a win for you. This youtuber even referred to him at a point when he said Wokespotting. I saw this term used by Pillar of Garbage as the main topic for one of his video a few months back. Apparently he had also called out bullshit of CD last year and this year so you're free to check his channel out.
I never understood the entire "woke virus" thing. Like, people just use the term to refer to everything they don't like, especially if it isn't straight, white, or male. This will fizzle out someday and the reactionaries will use the next stupid term.

I always have to mention this whenever someone brings up Hemsworth's role in Ghostbusters. this type of "Cosmically Stupid" character has existed for years. Homer from Simpsons, Peter from Family Guy, Fry from Futurama, all main characters, all unfathomably dumb, and yet, their fans rally behind them like crazy. We love how dumb how they are, and the antics that ensue over their hilariously inept actions. All three of these guys also have much smarter female co-stars who usually end up actually saving the day and shielding the main character from the consequences of their stupidity. Why have these characters and these stories always been so celebrated, but we can''t get behind a Himbo Chris Hemsowrth? Or even a slightly dopey Peter Parker? How come Peter Griffin is able to be buffoon and it's okay, but when Peter Parker is kinda silly and inept it's a conspiracy against men?

So you have this guy (drinker) who comes along with what appears to be brutally honest, simple and straightforward ways of viewing movies and of course people gravitate towards it. It plays to an ideal version of moviemaking/ TV production that "everything was better before (insert thing of the day). It presents itself as stripped back, blunt and condensed, but ultimately ends up overgeneralising, basic, pedantic.
(I do want to say, I think Jessica was no longer pregnant after we get to her reintroduction at the Spider Society! However, please correct me if I’m wrong ATSV fans 😅)
Spider-man goes through so much because he’s meant to show us that no matter what, a regular human CAN get through anything. He responds like we would respond and gets back up after ANYTHING. It’s why Spider-man is so well liked. We get happy seeing him at a new low because SOMEONE out there has been in that situation and Peter Parker getting through it means that maybe, just maybe that real life person can too. It gives us hope, Peter’s entire story STARTS off as bad as it can get damn near and only gets worse as time goes on, the super powers don’t save him they add on to his problems. And he pushes through not because of his powers, but because as a human he is capable of doing so.
Like what I said about his "They hate men" video, this isn't anything deep. CD is mad that his escapist power fantasy isn't constantly pandered to as much anymore (and also deprive and mock women of the same thing 😂, its why I have a big suspicion towards the term "mary sue", they sure don't like those but actively desire male characters to be just that), while also strangely enough want to be victimized so fucking badly for some reason but will never know what that entails. Its really weird.
I want to do a video essay on this, but I think people like Drinker just hate the concept of introspection and the idea a movie tells a person who represents his demographic needs to change his way of thinking. To people like him, the only thing a white male character should learn is how to punch harder. Studies have shown conservatives tend to have more ingrained fear about the exposure to new ideas and new experiences, and they tend to base their political beliefs on that fear. So it makes sense why they also use that to build their artistic beliefs too. That's why he'll always argue Luke Skywalker in TLJ was "ruined" or "emasculated" even though the film ends with him saving the lives of his friends and the entire rebellion, humiliating the whiny punk who wanted to tear his legacy down, and inspiring the galaxy to rise up. To him, that didn't matter because he wasn't utilizing violence or confidence enough from beginning to end. Or how critics like him don't care that in Dial of Destiny, the entire intro is seeing Indiana Jones being amazing as he cuts down Nazi after Nazi, and for an eighty year-old he was still able to do great things, saving Helena's life with the parachute, or that he was able to have a happy ending where he could face his fear of Marion hating him and getting back together. Again, did Indiana have to do anything that didn't involve him using violence, did he have to discover he was "wrong", and heaven forbid did he have to learn anything from...*gasp* a woman?! Well obviously he was ruined. To these people, a story where a person who represents their demographic has to learn something other than punching people on the other side harder is absolute poison.
Peter Parker represents how everyone on the outside sees Spider-Man while Peter B Parker represents who Spider-Man really is he doesn’t have a 10/10 life and shi constantly hits the fan he does get back up but his life isn’t as glorious as most people think it is
the funny thing is how much he loved Andor which is clearly an anti-fascist series and therefore left-leaning but hey, the protagonist is an adult straight while male and the female characters don't have multicolor hair dye

The way I see it, being anti woke makes you into a Karen, it's no better than the woke crowd. Both are hyper fixated on nonsensical details such as a character skin or the background color. I can't understand stand how Drinker sees Peter B Parker as mocking and belittling. I find it so endearing that Peter Parker is a dad onscreen and showing how much he loves his wife and child. If the filmmakers were trying to make me or others pity Peter, they failed horrendously, because he was a fan favorite character in the first and now even more so in the second.

I honestly can't blame the guy for being so cynical considering how many modern movies and shows are just about pushing agendas. The drinker's been conditioned to see anything that might be construed as even semi-progressive as a political statement, as that's become the norm these days.
That is kind of on him though as it's not even with modern movies, even with older films like fight club he just completely misses the mark by like a mile, giving shallow takes to a poorly written show or movie isn't really that hard. The fact he can barely make a decent analysis on an actual "good" film kind of shows he's only really good at analyzing one kind of media, an analysis literally most people could make.
This is when you are so used to pointing out woke stuff that you start seeing everything as that. Peter B. Parker was perfect. He is kind of a loser, but he is still clearly very competent as a Spiderman, I mean he never even seemed to struggle in fights and he also ended up being a very good mentor for Miles. He also redeemed himself and fixed his life. He is on the more jokester side but he is still very cool. He was able to get a moment alone with Miles in ASV when no one else could catch him. So the Critical Drinker is way too stuck with THE MESSAGE to realize that this isn’t the same thing they did with Luke or He-man, etc., even if it looked alike.
This is especially egregious considering how much Critical Drinker loooves to criticize how certain female leads are depicted: uncritically having success thrown at their feet without ever having to overcome adversity or grow as a person. And yeah, looking at Captain Marvel and She-Hulk, there's an argument to be made there that it does sometimes happen and it sucks. (Though he's also inclined to accuse every female lead of being this whether it's true or not) But for him to then whine that they're depicting the white guy as having challenges and faults to overcome kind of reveals that he's an insincere, hypocritical little gadfly who parasitizes legitimate arguments in order to shit on any movie where female characters, characters of color, and LGBT+ characters get the spotlight even a little bit. He doesn't give two fucks about whether a character is well-written or not, he's just always scanning for a non-white, non-male, non-straight character he can demonize as a part of his grift. Since we're having a little Critical Drinker group therapy session, I also want to point out he is freakishly incompetent at making videos. His videos consist of nothing but him bitching and moaning in his monotone, vaguely slurred voice while occasionally playing video clips. And when I say video clips, I mean the same five unfunny video clips he reuses ad nauseum in every video. And God, the way he sometimes laughs at his own jokes is infuriating. It's the lamest, laziest fake laugh you've ever heard. He's a loser. Seeing a dweeb like him come down on movies that take efforts from hundreds of people to even get off the ground when he can't even make a video right makes me want to stuff him in a garbage can and take all his money. I wanna run his underwear up the flag pole and read his diary out in front of the whole school. I want to piss in all his house plants and put laxatives in all his beer. i think all the bad things that were said about peter B were the parts that made him relatable and endearing to spider-man fans. kudos to the writers who has made a good "grown up peter" where the comic books mostly fails.

Key moment from the second movie that a lot of people tend to overlook is that Peter .B is literally the only spiderman to successfully catch Miles during the chase and talk to him by thinking ahead in the scene prior.
Exactly, he’s the only Spider-Man wise enough to understand where Miles was going, and the only one who was (almost) able to talk him out of his plan - like an ACTUAL hero, instead of trying to beat the shit out of him.
Also...he's literally the only (that's shown) Spider individual in the movie who's been through his canon events, got knocked down in life, and grew beyond it. Not saying the others haven't (we don't know yet) or can't, but seeing someone go from his state in the first movie to a happy, married father should be awe-inspiring, not a point to ridicule him.
People ridiculing Peter B. Parker for finding happiness despite his canon events truly have a warped view of life and fulfilment.

People just seem to be mad about the pretty traditional jaded mentor trope when its done to an existing character. Like it's fine if a character we don't know has an elaborate and tragic backstory that made them jaded until they met the protagonist but if an established character has a bunch of tragic stuff happen to them they have to remain a shining paragon hero. Can't become a knight in sour armor to borrow the TV tropes term.
And people mad that Peter is a bit of a goof ball seem to just ignore basically every depiction of him he's a nerd whose quick with a quip and does a lot of things that he thinks are amusing as long as they don't get in the way of him actually stopping the bsd guy

I always thought peter B served the purpose of being a subversion of a teenage peter parker. Instead of a spiderman struggling to balance his life between being a teenager and superhero, Peter B is an adult struggling to be an adult but still capable of being spiderman. Peter B is by no means a joke or a punching bag, even in spite of his rustiness he's able to take the lead and be spiderman when he needs to.
He literally recovers from the slump by the second one too, idk how people find him a loser. Even from a toxic masculinity perspective he still gets the sexy redhead and is better than most Spidermen in the Spider Society. Peter B is the only who catches up to Miles and does a better job than anyone else of trying to talk him down.

Peter bringing Mayday along makes sense. First of all, the Spider Society is probably one of the safest places in the multiverse, it's just where the Spideys hang out between missions so I don't see how Mayday would be in danger. As for why he brought her along during the chase, I think the reason Peter brought Mayday along despite knowing it's bad parenting is because he really thought she would help change Miles' mind.

I love Peter B Parker because he is subversion of the typical Spider-man story. Normally, no matter the odds, Peter always gets back up and keeps going. But with Peter B, it shows that like in real life, sometimes its too much and we might stay down for a bit. Peter for 22 years let being Spider-man consume him. It ruined relationships, friendships, his marriage, he was afriad of having a child becuase of the danger, the physical and emotional toll it brings and having to bury his Aunt May. So of course he is going to be burnt out, no one is perfect! But when he met Miles and saw what a terrific kid he is, he probably saw a lot of himself in him and it gave him the shot of hope to get up and fight again and wanting to become a dad. It's not a mockery of the Peter Parker character, in fact it shows a real matured Peter learning not to give up after life put him through it. The film makers show more respect to Peter in two films more than the current comic writers who have him cucked and not letting him mature.

I saw a really great comment on another one of these critique videos that pretty much sums up how channels like the Critical Drinker look at characters in media. It went like:
Gender: Male or woke

Race: White or woke
With the whole spider woman being pregnant thing, I think what the writers are trying to say is that the job of Spider-Man or woman doesn’t really stop when your personal life gets in the way.

And Wakanda keeping Vibranium from being spread like candy to nations that seek to abuse it (like how the world treats nuclear weaponry) has never been the issue. The issue is how Wakanda didn't use vibranium to help out in issues they could conceivably intervene in. A problem addressed by Wakanda helping in Infinity War and Endgame and revealing themselves to the world after the first movie.
I feel like the drinker has a really hard time interpreting nuance like he can pretty easily tear apart a bad movie like rise of skywalker or quantumania but whenever a movie holds back layers to it’s plot or themes he just sort of waves it away as forcing “the message” (which lets be real is just him complaining about “woke” stuff without actually saying it) or claiming contrivance or things like that. A perfect example of this being in his Midsommar review where he could only brush the film at surface level and just called it “feminist propaganda”

6:49 it’s hysterical cuz that stuff is precisely why Peter B. was my fav Spider-Man in “Into”. I love that character trope. Ppl like Critical Drinker would assume based off my identity that I would prefer Gwen or Miles (they got their spotlight in “Across”, and I love them as much as Peter B. now), but i ended up loving the straight white cis Peter that was old and a mess.
I think it says more about Critical Drinker that be perceives any weakness or flaw in character as bad, and totally wrong or mockery if it’s a white guy. Everyone has their bad days, and should be given the chance and help to bounce back.
I think most male protagonists follow a formula of starting out on a great note, then stumbling for a bit before hitting their stride and saving the day in the end. But the stumble has to be big enough so that the audience feels some kind of relatability and investment but not so big that male audiences feel the protagonist is heading into a "pathetic" direction.
Characters who save the day in movies are not usually constructed to feel very deeply, and this could be due to a variety of reasons (movie run time, societal expectations, etc). Having someone like Peter Parker get hit hard and show that might feel disconcerting to many because he doesn't bounce back after one inspiration speech. But I like Peter's character because he shows realism.
I think many male characters like him get mixed reception because they subvert established tropes of what a main character should be. Newt Scamander from Fantastic Beasts in the first movie received the same treatment. Many critics called him pathetic and even feminine because he wasn't loudly taking center stage and aggressively fighting the bad guy, and instead takes a more understanding and nurturing approach that his "opponents" often needed but never received.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but i agree with you on the struggles of Peter Parker and the responsibilities of being Spider-man. Heck, there a Spider-man Novel that i own, where he's a successful college professor, is married to Mary Jane and still struggles with maintaining his daily life while trying to stop a new Carrion created by a cult trying to acquire the DarkHold to summon Cthon and destroy/takeover the world. the point being Peter Parker as himself or Spiderman will always have problems to overcome and that is why we love him as a relatable character.

As someone who's seen The Critical Drinker long enough the best way to describe him is this: On rare and I mean rare occasion when he gets something right he gets it painfully accurate but most of the times it's just wrong and bad takes like this. This is the first time we've seen a Spiderman get a big break. He got a wife and kid and he's living the good life. You can't really say that for most Spiderman especially the comics. I honestly think at the end of the day he's doing this to troll and it's all a bit or he's just got a screw loose.

The critical drinker has the critical analytical skills of an actual drunk, so at least his name isn’t false advertising.
Peter B is actually one of the few times he's gotten past university without the timeline resetting. He's lived into his 40s and has been through some shit that most versions of him never reach because they're always in their prime. Spider-verse really trod new ground for the character by finally giving us a serious and grounded portrayal of what a middle-aged, cynical old spider-man would be like and that deserves some credit.
Funny that he calls depressed characters losers but is a proud alcoholic because idiots see drinking as masculine.

At the start of the movie, Peter B. Parker is alone at the lowest point of his life - he's cynical and jaded from years of fighting endless battles for little thanks, having multiple business ventures fizzle to nothing before his very eyes, and having the love of his life leave him because he was afraid of being a father. The movie doesn't go out of its way to mock him for this, beyond a couple light-hearted jokes, because realistically any one of us could end up in this sort of situation, or know someone who has.
Which brings him to being a fan favourite because he still rises up to the mantle despite his imperfections. He mentors Miles despite his initial apprehension to do so, he stands up for Miles against the other Spiders, and is ultimately rewarded for it by getting to see Miles become the spider he always believed he could be, and having Miles then give him the confidence boost he needed to finally go back home and fix his shit. He isn't "miraculously redeemed" at the end, his redemption comes throughout the movie, a slow burn that roars to a flame at the end with him getting the girl, becoming a father, and finally getting to be happy!

My issue with his critique towards Peter bringing his daughter over stems from that simple fact. This man’s been through a lot and he’s finally found joy he hasn’t had in forever. Is it a little annoying that he’s not a bit more serious? A tiny bit to me, but I can cut him some slack lol he deserved this happiness. And he’s still serious when he needs to be so it’s not *too* obtrusive

Critical Drinker's perception is a (likely depressed) single cynical alchoholic; watching a character (roughly in his demographic) go through and overcome real depression, and having a healthy bond with his wife and incredibly dedicated role in his daughter's upbringing - not by necessity nor societal expectation, but because he LOVES her
I dont expect him to understand being a 'real' man and a 'real' father when he's made a living and reputation by embracing what Peter grew from
He's just another man who's at his own bottom, being told and telling others that it isnt his fault but some 'woke mind virus' oppressing him because.... comic character has different skin and/or organs than him?

Channels like critical drinker are necessary in todays day and age but I noticed that as time goes on they plunge deeper into their critic persona and just start shitting on everything cause they’re the “SJW critic of the people”. Sometimes they grasp at straws which is unfortunate.
I swear that's the only reason the Trans Gwen theory came out, like...and she wasn't just a decent person. Because the article hubs realized after about 2 days that the movie was too solid to really complain about anything without spoilers so they just made shit up.
People watched The Nostalgia Critic once and assumed it was unironic (the whole character, whether he's correct or not, is meant to be a caricature of immature fanboys hence the "nostalgia").
It's to the point that being a "critic" apparently means trying to find every negatives that appear in a film and then conclude that it sucks.
I do think that in some of his reviews, he does have a point and he can be right. But now he is like:

Tbh I feel like people take Peter bringing his baby along way too seriously. Like, its a cartoon, all the characters do things that wouldn't be possible irl without dying, and Mayday has superpowers. Spiderwoman's baby also likely has superpowers, which is why it's not getting scrambled.
I really, REALLY fucking wish more channels would talk about Critical Drinker like this. His review of the Barbie movie, along with the comments, made me physically ill. But I haven't seen ANY other decent critics call him out and his fanbase is a borderline cult. And now, thanks to his newest review, he caught some women who hated the film just because the theaters didn't select one of the many direct to dvd films and play that instead.
Pillar of Garbage is one youtuber who make some sense and presents a fresh and nuanced perspective to these marvel movies. He even discusses about old TV shows so that's a win for you.
This youtuber even referred to him at a point when he said Wokespotting.
I saw this term used by Pillar of Garbage as the main topic for one of his video a few months back. Apparently he had also called out bullshit of CD last year and this year so you're free to check his channel out.

I never understood the entire "woke virus" thing. Like, people just use the term to refer to everything they don't like, especially if it isn't straight, white, or male. This will fizzle out someday and the reactionaries will use the next stupid term.

this type of "Cosmically Stupid" character has existed for years. Homer from Simpsons, Peter from Family Guy, Fry from Futurama, all main characters, all unfathomably dumb, and yet, their fans rally behind them like crazy. We love how dumb how they are, and the antics that ensue over their hilariously inept actions. All three of these guys also have much smarter female co-stars who usually end up actually saving the day and shielding the main character from the consequences of their stupidity. Why have these characters and these stories always been so celebrated, but we can''t get behind a Himbo Chris Hemsowrth? Or even a slightly dopey Peter Parker? How come Peter Griffin is able to be buffoon and it's okay, but when Peter Parker is kinda silly and inept it's a conspiracy against men?

I have a confession… I used to watch The Critical Drinker and believed what he said but then when I saw his Glass Onion review and all he was doing was bashing Ryan Johnson and misunderstanding the movie I was just confused when the movie was really imo so I went back and rewatched his older content and realized he was always like this and stopped watching him

@@thegamingprozone1941 I think its mostly to do with its "authenticity". The world with the internet is complicated place and people don't want to ponder over complicated solutions. So you have this guy (drinker) who comes along with what appears to be brutally honest, simple and straightforward ways of viewing movies and of course people gravitate towards it. It plays to an ideal version of moviemaking/ TV production that "everything was better before (insert thing of the day). It presents itself as stripped back, blunt and condensed, but ultimately ends up overgeneralising, basic, pedantic.
Hatred & outrage unfortunately sells.

Spider-man goes through so much because he’s meant to show us that no matter what, a regular human CAN get through anything. He responds like we would respond and gets back up after ANYTHING. It’s why Spider-man is so well liked. We get happy seeing him at a new low because SOMEONE out there has been in that situation and Peter Parker getting through it means that maybe, just maybe that real life person can too. It gives us hope, Peter’s entire story STARTS off as bad as it can get damn near and only gets worse as time goes on, the super powers don’t save him they add on to his problems. And he pushes through not because of his powers, but because as a human he is capable of doing so.
Like what I said about his "They hate men" video, this isn't anything deep. CD is mad that his escapist power fantasy isn't constantly pandered to as much anymore (and also deprive and mock women of the same thing 😂, its why I have a big suspicion towards the term "mary sue", they sure don't like those but actively desire male characters to be just that), while also strangely enough want to be victimized so fucking badly for some reason but will never know what that entails. Its really weird.
I want to do a video essay on this, but I think people like Drinker just hate the concept of introspection and the idea a movie tells a person who represents his demographic needs to change his way of thinking. To people like him, the only thing a white male character should learn is how to punch harder. Studies have shown conservatives tend to have more ingrained fear about the exposure to new ideas and new experiences, and they tend to base their political beliefs on that fear. So it makes sense why they also use that to build their artistic beliefs too.
That's why he'll always argue Luke Skywalker in TLJ was "ruined" or "emasculated" even though the film ends with him saving the lives of his friends and the entire rebellion, humiliating the whiny punk who wanted to tear his legacy down, and inspiring the galaxy to rise up. To him, that didn't matter because he wasn't utilizing violence or confidence enough from beginning to end. Or how critics like him don't care that in Dial of Destiny, the entire intro is seeing Indiana Jones being amazing as he cuts down Nazi after Nazi, and for an eighty year-old he was still able to do great things, saving Helena's life with the parachute, or that he was able to have a happy ending where he could face his fear of Marion hating him and getting back together. Again, did Indiana have to do anything that didn't involve him using violence, did he have to discover he was "wrong", and heaven forbid did he have to learn anything from...*gasp* a woman?! Well obviously he was ruined.
To these people, a story where a person who represents their demographic has to learn something other than punching people on the other side harder is absolute poison.
Peter Parker represents how everyone on the outside sees Spider-Man while Peter B Parker represents who Spider-Man really is he doesn’t have a 10/10 life and shi constantly hits the fan he does get back up but his life isn’t as glorious as most people think it is

Imagine watching A Trip to the Moon, and instead of being amazed by the innovation and creativity and charm and (gonna get corny here) magic of early movies and the care and love and thought that went into them, no matter how short, or how Melies was a visionary who shot films forward from mere dime store novelties to narrative art form, and just going “Uh oh, plot holes spotted!!”
The way I see it, being anti woke makes you into a Karen, it's no better than the woke crowd. Both are hyper fixated on nonsensical details such as a character skin or the background color.
In the west we are taught individualism is what makes us human but so far due to being bombarded with media and politic it's a philosophy that just leads one into an echo chamber that if a minor inconveniences accur, it's a us vs them mentality.
Anti-woke crowds are just as whiny as the woke crowds, if not more so. Heaven forbid you make a white man look bad in a film. They'll totally ignore how all the non white men are made to look like incompetent buffoons in the same film. Take TLJ for instance, both Finn and Poe got the short end of the stick on that one. Not that the likes of Mauler or Drinker would ever notice.

I can't understand stand how Drinker sees Peter B Parker as mocking and belittling. I find it so endearing that Peter Parker is a dad onscreen and showing how much he loves his wife and child. If the filmmakers were trying to make me or others pity Peter, they failed horrendously, because he was a fan favorite character in the first and now even more so in the second.

I used to like the critical drinker because I thought he was actually calling out some problematic things in movies but after a while I realized if he sees anything he slightly considers "woke" in movies he just calls the entire thing shit
I honestly can't blame the guy for being so cynical considering how many modern movies and shows are just about pushing agendas.
The drinker's been conditioned to see anything that might be construed as even semi-progressive as a political statement, as that's become the norm these days.
That is kind of on him though as it's not even with modern movies, even with older films like fight club he just completely misses the mark by like a mile, giving shallow takes to a poorly written show or movie isn't really that hard. The fact he can barely make a decent analysis on an actual "good" film kind of shows he's only really good at analyzing one kind of media, an analysis literally most people could make.
This is when you are so used to pointing out woke stuff that you start seeing everything as that.
Peter B. Parker was perfect. He is kind of a loser, but he is still clearly very competent as a Spiderman, I mean he never even seemed to struggle in fights and he also ended up being a very good mentor for Miles.
He also redeemed himself and fixed his life. He is on the more jokester side but he is still very cool. He was able to get a moment alone with Miles in ASV when no one else could catch him.
So the Critical Drinker is way too stuck with THE MESSAGE to realize that this isn’t the same thing they did with Luke or He-man, etc., even if it looked alike.
This is especially egregious considering how much Critical Drinker loooves to criticize how certain female leads are depicted: uncritically having success thrown at their feet without ever having to overcome adversity or grow as a person. And yeah, looking at Captain Marvel and She-Hulk, there's an argument to be made there that it does sometimes happen and it sucks. (Though he's also inclined to accuse every female lead of being this whether it's true or not)
But for him to then whine that they're depicting the white guy as having challenges and faults to overcome kind of reveals that he's an insincere, hypocritical little gadfly who parasitizes legitimate arguments in order to shit on any movie where female characters, characters of color, and LGBT+ characters get the spotlight even a little bit. He doesn't give two fucks about whether a character is well-written or not, he's just always scanning for a non-white, non-male, non-straight character he can demonize as a part of his grift.
Since we're having a little Critical Drinker group therapy session, I also want to point out he is freakishly incompetent at making videos. His videos consist of nothing but him bitching and moaning in his monotone, vaguely slurred voice while occasionally playing video clips. And when I say video clips, I mean the same five unfunny video clips he reuses ad nauseum in every video. And God, the way he sometimes laughs at his own jokes is infuriating. It's the lamest, laziest fake laugh you've ever heard.
He's a loser. Seeing a dweeb like him come down on movies that take efforts from hundreds of people to even get off the ground when he can't even make a video right makes me want to stuff him in a garbage can and take all his money. I wanna run his underwear up the flag pole and read his diary out in front of the whole school. I want to piss in all his house plants and put laxatives in all his beer.

i think all the bad things that were said about peter B were the parts that made him relatable and endearing to spider-man fans. kudos to the writers who has made a good "grown up peter" where the comic books mostly fails.
