Aaron O'Toole is definitely an Irish immigrant character that Felix spoke into existence in an earlier episode

I would think Dieppe would be the closest thing Canada has to Gallipoli having about 70% casualty rate.

In terms of military disasters yes Dieppe would be a good parallel. In terms of casualties definitely world war 1. Vimy Ridge, Passchendale and the Somme. I think they mentioned Vimy Ridge.
However, the toughest fight ever for Canada were the last 100 days or so of world War 1. They lost 50,000 men in the battle of Amiens and surrounding actions.

@@Baseballnfj Yeah, it was so brutal for the CEF that the canadian commander, Arthur Currie was called a butcher for at least a decade until he sued a newspaper for libel

@@Baseballnfj Glad to see this here. Our casualties in the First World War were nearly parallel to that of Australia’s. The tragedy of Canada’s war has been somewhat muted by the national narrative of triumph at Vimy. The Australians understandably focus their narrative on the bloodletting at Gallipoli for similar reasons we chose Vimy as both events were national collective experiences. Both events tell very different stories of the two countries’ war experience, though each experienced a fairly equal share of achievements and horrors. 1918 was our bloodiest year of the war with some 62,000 casualties during the hundred days campaign, but it doesn’t make as good of a story as it was a series of multiple battles that ultimately resulted in bringing an end to the war. Not quite the same Shakespearean Tragedy as Gallipoli was. Can’t blame the hosts for not knowing this though as we as a country have done a shit job at telling the story of our war experience. Worse so is our treatment of the Second World War experience, which we’ve pretty much neglected altogether aside from Dieppe. Bright side is however that we haven’t used our war experiences to purport myths of exceptionalism and unquestioned righteousness.

@@VIAGRALAD Canadians seem to have a much better grasp of military history than Americans do. That's not exactly a high bar but it's something. I lived in the Netherlands for a while... in a couple towns liberated by Canadian troops. There were always Canadians visiting... all there to see where their grandfather or father fought. These were just small cities in the north... far away from any "famous" battlefield. It was pretty cool...
Most Americans just follow fucking Easy company around.
