    The subtle differences in the ornithopter designs was genius.
    Atreides = Dragonfly w/ lighter color
    Harkonnen = 3 wing beatle
    Kynes = small bug w/long wings

    • @Hittsy
      @Hittsy 7 місяців тому +57

      it's not just the thopters, and it's not bug mimicry, but rather house shapes.
      Atreides has a very angular shape for everything, the Atreides motif on their collars, their thopters are angular with long hard edges and corners, their frigates are giant triangular prisms with sharp edges.
      Harkonnen are organic and bulbous, their frigates (seen at the start of part 1), are misshapen, organic and squashed. Thopters have curved backs, and their uniforms similarly focus on curves and form-fitting.
      Imperial craft go for a circular motif, the frigate (carrying the emperor's messenger at the start) is very circular, and kynes, being an *imperial* ecologist, has an imperial thopter, who's front windscreen follows a perfect circular arc.

      It was probably a deliberate choice yes. But lore wise the Ornithopters are different types.
      First variant [medium]: From Atreides - minimal weapons
      Second variant [heavy]: From Harkonnen - heavy weapons which requires more wings and sacrifices speed
      Third variant [light]: From unknown - older design, leaner, faster, had a thruster on the back of it for speed, light armor, would have been very maneuverable in it's newer state vs it's old state we saw in the film
      In the second film, Harkonnen's can be seen flying the medium type and the heavier type

      Kynes was raised to hate the Harkonens by both kynes' father the imperial ecologist before Kynes as well as Kynes' fremen mother. But, the dream of the Fremen is a water rich green Arrakis so going against the emperor at this moment would be against that dream
      Kynes' family back story is only hinted at in Dune but is fleshed out in the Dune Encyclopedia that was written during Frank Herbert's life and he said he would never say if it was or was not canonical. Either way it is a great backstory with kynes' father stopping harkonens beating up fremen and figuring out the spice cycle.

    This movie is grand in a way many movies aren't any more. It makes me think of Peter Jackon's Lord of the Rings movies. Even some recent movies with galactic scale feel small, and cramped. Dune didn't feel small.

    • @GrandHighGamer
      @GrandHighGamer 2 роки тому +95

      The one thing I'll ding it on is how minimalist it feels, despite its scope. Any plot thread or character that doesn't need to be on screen isn't. LOTR had a richness in terms of the scope of what it showed, whereas Dune is very lean in order to keep its runtime down. Like I expected a lot of Piter only for him to be on screen for three minutes. Moreso for Yueh. It's not bad, but the minimalism does change the feeling a little and make it harder to connect deeply with characters since there's less time for them to show their personalities. Some more character moments, instead of just 'world' moments or moments for pacing, may have helped ground the characters better. LOTR it never felt like a character was there and then immediately gone, Dune very much felt like that. An excellent film, but almost a bit like Tenet (or perhaps Dunkirk is a bit kinder of a comparison) in how intentionally trimmed down parts of it were. I do hope Part 2 lets the characters breath a bit more (give us Gurney's balliset playing!).

On the other side House Atreides was serious threat from two big reasons - 1) Leto Atreides was very popular and recognized in Landsraad as he was true and charismatic leader and 2) foundation of Emperor power were Saurdakaur forces, which were superior to all other and all other Houses were afraid of them, but House Atreides has two best Swordmasters in Empire, Duncan and Gurney, and they succeeded to train small force of Atreides soldiers to Sardakaur level (maybe even surpass it)

    Let’s put this rubbish to bed quickly. The character’s alteration in this adaptation is gender alone. It is never mentioned what skin colour the good doctor has in the book; only that he is a man.
    This adaptation has a different approach to some elements than some were expecting - but I would argue that every damn one is an improvement. (A small example being that Fremen never used the sand to camouflage themselves before attacking in the book - that was invented entirely for this film and it works so well that it has some fans asking “Why didn’t Frank Herbert write that? Seems obvious the Fremen would do that.”)

Rather than take issue with the writing, guys like the EFAP crew, the quartering, and critical drinker, amongst many others used the opportunity to absolutely smear and some to even harass actors they decided they didn't like, primarily being women and minorities. Sure, they also pointed out the flaws in the writing, but they'd always find a way to wrap it around to people like daisy ridley being "woke" because at the end of the day the bad aspects of popular films are just a reason to further spew culture war rhetoric.
      The moment I saw Kynes was a black woman instead of a (Herbert never specified their race) *white* man, I knew what they'd do. It's sad how predictable it's become. They'll quote MLK without hearing a word he said.

    People say that the gender swap didn't affect the narrative, but in a book there were at least three major details concerning Liet being male:
    Firstly, there was father-son relationship between Pardot and Liet Kynes. Liet was continuing work of life of his father and this is an ancient trope and custom which would definitely add to feudal future. It wasn't some random arc, it was a repetitive intentional trope, a reflection of Paul himself becoming Duke (and Leto II becoming even greater than his father), of Emperor not having male heirs.
    Secondly, Liet was referred almost as God and throughout history God was a male figure. Fremen weren't an exception as they refered the sandworm as the Old Man of the Desert as he gave them transportation, spice and crysknives. And in the third book the deadly burning sun is on other hand refered as Woman-Sun.
    Finally, both Paul and Chani lost their parents because of Harkonnen and both of them being fathers makes the bond between them much stronger.

      "this is an ancient trope and custom which would definitely add to feudal future"
      I am not buying this because the Duneverse only has the weakest trappings of feudalism, and presumably Herbert put it there primarily to show that this far future human civilization was falling into decay. You can find more feudalism in a Jane Austen novel, with its strong patriarchy, plot stumbles caused by primogeniture, and intra-family arguments about status and money.
      If this Liet-Kynes character had much more screen time to be developed, it is conceivable that I could see your other arguments mattering even a little. But the movie, as it stands, is very laser focused on Paul's personal journey, and we do not have time for anything you just said to carry any weight for me.

    Jason’s voice cracking when he delivers: “the Emperor sent us here to die.” was probably not intentional, but it made that line speak volumes.
    Considering his entire house was extinguished overnight he has to be feeling grief, anger, confusion, etc. That little break in confidence adds all that to such a small (but important) line of dialogue.

    None of the Star Wars movies ever had this grand scale feel to them. They always tried to pander to the merchandising and kids. Only the last one tried to approach that, but didn't succeed on the level Dune did. Star Wars was "fun", this was EPIC, as some have said, like LOTR.

      Dune and LoTR are both on a grand scale that Star Wars could only reach if Disney would get their priorities straight, which they can't. Even then, I think it would be tough because like you said Star Wars feels more fun, but Dune just sucks you into a dark, mesmerizing universe thanks to the quality of it's writing, and in the case of this movie the production
