I like just taking languages places and seeing what i want on a gut level as im evolving. it’s fun and leads to some really pretty results, like gendered vowel harmony
Would that really be considered gendered vowel harmony or just umlaut that marks noun class? Vowel harmony is a phonological process, not really a grammatical feature. How do your system work?
@@ashtray3860 idk how their system works, but the Manchu language has 'gendered' vowel harmony. front and back vowels cannot co-occur, but there's also a strong gender association with back vowels being male and front vowels being female. iirc there's a lot of paired words for humans and animals that just have the vowels swapped to indicate a male vs female referent.
A tangential note on something you said about complexity: French seems to have fossilized in the middle of changing word order, which is why it has negation particles before and after what they negate, and some adjectives come before what they modify while others come after

@@nirvanawayne9503 That's great stuff. What does that sentence mean? I don't know any dutch, but the verb "aanbellen" looks like german "anbellen". However, "anbellen" means "to bark at sb.", which I doubt is something you would do, unless you are a dog.
@@falkland_pinguin You're right, that's definitely not something you would say. "Aanbellen" in Dutch means something like "ringing a bell". So the sentence means "I ring my neighbours' doorbell." (Not literally translated). It probably does come from the same word. I hope this clears things up :)
Remember, if Chinese was a naturalistic conlang made by you, everyone would tell you it's not naturalistic at all and is an awful language. Sometimes you can spice things up and still be naturalistic:)
A better example of this might be stop voicing in Mongolian. It has stops articulated at the back of the mouth voiced and stops articulated at the front of the mouth unvoiced. This is the only instance of this in the world, as far as I know, and the norm is usually for voicing to be reversed. If Mongolian didn't exist and someone made a language with that kind of stop voicing, it might end up being called unnaturalistic. In fact, even with Mongolian existing, people might still point to this voicing paradigm and call it unnaturalistic, in spite of the fact that it exists in a real language.
@@falkland_pinguin Mandarin is just one of many varieties of Chinese, and it’s spoken across China as the official language, but was originally spoken around Beijing, IIRC.
