The CH-53 is right up there with my regard for the F-22 and F-35. Obvious applications but fascinating machines. It would be an honor to fly any of them.

He meant most powerful, and NO the MIL-26 isn't it. Also, there were a couple of other Soviet Era helicopters that were MUCH larger than the 26. Look 'em up. One looked like a large cargo plane with twin, overhead rotors, and and one was a MASSIVE unit with multiple main rotors.

When I lived outside Bridgeport CT I would see them alot being delivered. Biggest single rotar I've seen. The air pressure when they fly over at 500 feet is almost painfully pleasurable.
You look at this copter, and you will never understand and appreciate the power and smooth operation, until you are on one, it is INCREDIBLE, to go to 9,000 feet with 45 ? people fully equipped in seconds (it seemed like) crazy strong and flew for a half hour to the Carrier, just crazy !

Obviously you don't know that more sailors died in the battle for Guadalcanal than marines. It was because the sailors were trying to protect the marines from the Japanese fleet. They put up a hell of a fight but suffered one of the worst defeats in the US Navy's history. Which is why that body of water off Guadalcanal is now known as Iron Bottom Sound. Mil Mi-26 is the biggest I know of. Certainly bigger than both of these but having worked in an office just off the flightline from where the USAF trained their MH-53 pilots until phased out by the CV-22, the 53 is a spectacular machine. The E and K got a third engine and a lot more power, so I would assume it would be more impressive yet

I was very impressed by that 53 next to one of our chinooks, in the hanger. When they flew away, they gave our civilian tower a buzz, which was funny as hell.
we need a Sikorsky Hulk or Hercules. Capable of airlifting a crewed Abrams tank and fit 2 Bradleys inside with full crew and cabin. The Bradleys can be occupied to max crew capacity as well. Also an inflatable buoy system to touch down on the ocean for rapid extraction of Zodiac boats with a winch system to bring them in on the cargo ramp
I've wondered for quite a while why a full-on combat attack version of this chopper was never produced. And 'AH-53 Rottweiler', in effect. Multi-barrel GAU-8 miniguns mounted forward, rearward, and on the sides. Or similar armament. Would have packed a punch, reinforced armor plating on bottom and sides would have added resilience.

A C-5M Duper Galaxy cargo plane has a payload capacity of 281,000 pounds--- enough capacity for a fully assembled 88,000 lb CH-53 K King Stallion with folded blades and still have a 50% plus reserve.
A- What's a "Duper Galaxy", & 2- I was a '53 mechanic in the USAF, and unless they made some MAJOR design mods to the base C-5 airframe cross section, NO 53 can fit inside the hold without removing the main rotor head and transmission, the engines, and putting smaller tires on the nose gear. I've done it. What's your experience?
The King Stallion (CH-53K) is NOT the largest helicopter ever built, but it is the most powerful. The Soviet Union made 3 completely different airframes which were much larger (though not as powerful) than the '53K. One looked like a gigantic triangle, with 3 main rotors. It was designed for moving outsized loads to remote locations.
Today, a $35 drone can easily down it. I flew Hueys in Vietnam and then Cobras and the Blackhawks all the way to Somalia and am glad to have it all in my rear view mirror as there is now no place on the modern battlefield to have a person in anything flying. I think the sky crane can only lift about 24,000 pounds. Something like a 90 foot rotor diameter. The coolest thing that has ever shown up on one of our jobs.
While the CH-54 "Tarhe" engines are very powerful, and the airframe is basically a stripped-down, reinforced skeleton to enhance its payload capabilities, and it's drive train is a beefed up version of the CH-53C's, it's also much older, retired from military use, and the civilian versions don't get upgrades the way active-duty military airframes do.

I was a USAF mechanic on the MH-53H Pavelow IIIs back in the 80s.
Fly by wire for the 53K. Probably a fun one to pilot!

CH53 used everyday while Mi26 seldom used as it guzzle fuel and cannot be shipped throughout the world.
I knew that someone was going to bring up the Mi-26… Both helos are sitting ducks in a combat situation, although these helos are also necessary

Boeing made an MH-47 Gunship. 4 of them, in fact. One survived Nam and I believe it's in a museum.

The USAF flew the Super Jolly Green Giant HH-53 across the Pacific Ocean to Thailand and began Rescue missions into North Vietnam shortly thereafter.
