The CH-53 is right up there with my regard for the F-22 and F-35. Obvious applications but fascinating machines. It would be an honor to fly any of them.

He meant most powerful, and NO the MIL-26 isn't it. Also, there were a couple of other Soviet Era helicopters that were MUCH larger than the 26. Look 'em up. One looked like a large cargo plane with twin, overhead rotors, and and one was a MASSIVE unit with multiple main rotors.

"This cargo lift helicopter (CH-53) is the biggest helicopter ever built (0:35)". Well, that is quite deceiving and an overstatement indeed. The Mi-26 is bigger in size and heavier lifter too. Better, if you would say, "biggest of the USA".

Came here to say this. Research better. Actually even Mi-26 is not biggest "ever built" it's the biggest in serial production. Mil V-12 is the biggest ever built but it was only a prototype.

Mil Mi-26 is the biggest I know of. Certainly bigger than both of these but having worked in an office just off the flightline from where the USAF trained their MH-53 pilots until phased out by the CV-22, the 53 is a spectacular machine. I've wondered for quite a while why a full-on combat attack version of this chopper was never produced. And 'AH-53 Rottweiler', in effect. Multi-barrel GAU-8 miniguns mounted forward, rearward, and on the sides. Or similar armament. Would have packed a punch, reinforced armor plating on bottom and sides would have added resilience.

I think the sky crane can only lift about 24,000 pounds. Something like a 90 foot rotor diameter. The coolest thing that has ever shown up on one of our jobs.

While the CH-54 "Tarhe" engines are very powerful, and the airframe is basically a stripped-down, reinforced skeleton to enhance its payload capabilities, and it's drive train is a beefed up version of the CH-53C's, it's also much older, retired from military use, and the civilian versions don't get upgrades the way active-duty military airframes do.

the Indian Navy could do with a fleet of 38 - 43 brand new navalized surface ship borne MH-53KU Sea Stallion II (Block 10+) maritime multi role heavy lift helo gunship . . . only catch is the navy will have to enlarge the aft stern section hangars onboard their guided missile destroyers & frigates to accommodate the big helo . . . other than it's perfect for the navy . . .

I wish people would firstly do theirs research before stating something stupid like "biggest ever built". The biggest helicopter ever bult was the Russian Mil 12V but it was impractical and never used much. Another Russian helicopter the Mi-26 is in daily use as heavy transport and humanitarian work. It is roughly 50% bigger than the CH-53.
