San Francisco’s port is basically unused since the 80s, great potential for a local shipbuilding industry there!
My father enlisted in Navy following Pearl Harbor. He was part of Pacific Fleet repairing LST's (Landing Ships, Tank) damaged in battle. He was assigned to Engine Room as a Diesel Ship Engine Specialist. The faster they could repair and return ships, the faster they were able to use these very important ships.
There were only 2 ways to get troops on an island; parachute or landing craft. They had no means to drop tanks from air so the best way was with landing craft.

At 15:40 there are some interesting deck deflectors. They seem to be flipped up by downwash and fall flat when not needed. A great idea if I am understanding what I am seeing correctly. I assume the purpose is to protect the deck crew from stong prop blast along the deck surface.

this is good in theory, but i have concerns on these landing docks might prone to green water issues on rough seas, and it might need couple of CRAM as well, just in case.

Only problem with this is the Navy is getting rid of their hoovercraft. Supposedly due to low availability and extreme maintenance requirements. They also have limited usage in higher seas.
I'm sure our military industrial complex is working on this issue.
US Navy may be replacing old LCACs with SSCs, but they're not getting rid of the platform. The SSC production line is in full swing.
@@Urugami45 What I said apparently is only true for the LCAC and they are being replaced with a much improved version the SSC that addresses all the LCAC’s issues. Thank you for the information.
We Americans should also pursue wing in ground effect vehicles like Ekranoplans; also those Expedition Transfer Docks need some serious protection cause otherwise, its a big sitting target.
The docks do have some serious protection. I’ve been on a few.

My father (75) was in the army on the ground in Vietnam and he said working at the nassco shipyard was worse than being in the war. conditions were that bad.
Spent 17 months at NASSCO Shipyard in San Diego on USS Kinkaid DD 965 from Feb 1987 to Jun 1988...No fun!!
Well ship building is usually nasty work but its arguably far better than the conditions at the Gadini Ship Breaking yard where safety equipment is optional and worker deaths are a part of doing business.

I world war 2 the DUKW was very useful in amphibious and land operations.

I find it funny to see that there is a ship called USS Monfort; It is in the 11th century that the name of Montfort appears in the texts, it is a small village in France near where I live in French Brittany.

I served on two Gators; USS Whidbey Island LSD 41 1993-96 and USS Wasp LHD 1 2000-03. I had the opportunity to ride on an LCAC in 2002 while returning from deployment on USS Wasp....
How fast does it feel when riding on one? they look slow but id imagine itd feel like youre going super fast lol
@@ironmaidenfan66670 Feels faster on the ocean compared to being on the ship. Ship averages 12-15 knots. LCAC is going twice as fast.

Hovercraft is massive industry and products it's has different machines in its particular makings so control on All sides is of usability or mammas overpopulation manufacturing... good
they could have created a way better ship to carry way more of these. One that could fill itself with water so it could submerge to its top level and than let water out level as level rising at the same time so it could have 100(s) of these it could release in very short order.
FYI, USNS John Glenn has been moored in Oakland near Jack London Square for over a year.

This is the first I've heard of these ships (5:35 / after how many years?), and all I can say is... genius. ;-)
I imaging the LCATs are loaded prior to deployment from dock, with the next load(s), ready to be loaded aboard the LCATs after they return from their first drop?
USMC 93 to 97.
We deployed on ship for 6 months. The LCACs were loaded on the beach, run to the ship off load and come back. Our ship had 4 LCACs all of them were loaded with the 1st load. In rough water you could feel it. Seeing the sky then water, up and down. Once you got used to them you had no problems with rough seas. Ended up riding in the cockpit several times. Crew from ACU4 were awsome to deal with

therin lies the flaw of amphibious assault in the 21st century. but if im not mistaken, the US has pretty much uncontested air superiority, so it might be a non-issue.
That’s why the Marines roll with the Cobra, Harriers and F-35B’s.
@@lisaroberts8556 That's all great up to the point you run into an opponent with a couple ZU-23's, a few SA-9 Strella's, and half dozen manpads on the beach, then there are a lot of people having a bad day. The current compliment of missile deterrent on each air craft is not enough.

The u.s. navy is the highest paid branch of all the u.s. military branches and these are a few of many reasons why.
Amphibious planes are also good,they can fly and swim,easy to maneuver in seas.maybe these planes can carry torpedoes and missiles atop of each wings

Not a new idea. Back before Ford Class was developed, the Navt wanted to build stationary catamaran pontoon like floating airstrips that could be made fully operational as needed. They were non-propulsion powered, so they would be towed then anchored into place. There would be no catapults as the runway was to be 3000 feet long. Manned full time by a minimum crew when not in use. They would be placed in international waters in strategic locations so planes could fly, land, and be staged of faster sorties than a CVN could travel to get there. They were much cheaper. Have no idea why the program was not pursued.

I don't understand. How are these useful in warfare? Aren't bullets just gonna immediately deflate them?
Go look at how hovercraft are made. Many many bullet holes would cause issues, but just a few I'm sure the blowers can make up for.

Does each of these converted tanker platform thingies get its own carrier task group to protect it during actual shooting wars? I like the concept for logistics but the world is smaller these days with satellites tracking everywhere. It's not like only the good team has all the latest assets anymore. China is readying its blue water capabilities with numbers if not exactly with sophistication. Those things seem like they have a lot of obvious vulnerabilities if real shooting is happening. You'd need to own the skies AND the seas damn near all over an entire war zone before that stuff becomes reasonably safe by themselves with their own gunships or missiles as defence. Ultra cool though.
No. It is used for smaller scale or spec ops type stuff. It might have a destroyer or two with it though
@@MikeS309 I like it as a cheaper way of moving LCACs to the theatre at least. Those Assault Carriers or whatever their new official designation is, are almost getting as costly as a true supercarrier when fully kitted out. Okay, a lot less than half but that's still a damn lot of human and hard assets to lose in a flash.
Does this expeditionary sea base or transfer ship have any kind of defensive weapons? They are sitting ducks without it. This former oil tanker could be retrofitted also and make it a mother of all missile tanker. They can probably put 200 cruise missiles or NASAMS on board as long as they have C-WIS, anti ship missiles, anti submarine torpedo etc for defensive postures. If we can make 30 or 40 more of these, it would be great. God bless the workers and men and women of the armed forces.
The next incoming conflict with China in Pacific will dictate our large number of this type of ship.
That's why is ship building yards have to expand and boost production.

This ship and its auxiliary transporters are going to be as important as aircraft carriers and once they are completely integrated into the American fighting doctrine , it will be impossible for any conventional force to withstand the raw force they bring to bear.

Except for the fact that hovercrafts have severe limitations regarding top speed, carrying capacity, fuel consumption, and vulnerability to simple weather. I mean, aside from that, they're perfect.

My opinion is hover craft is a waste of money 💰 for DOD. Landing ships LST'S can have a better effective getting equipment to shore. Next is the cost.
This only works for a peacetime scenario. The ships are too small. There would be a limited time to land the ground forces before the enemy would target them. Therefore they need the maximum amount of LCACs that can launch loaded at the same time. Or Armored amphibious personnel carriers. There should be a deck for additional vehicles and logistics also the troops. Troop bays need to be situated for extended operations. The ship needs multiple defensive systems to ensure nothing can hit the ship if the support ships fail to defend after all this a significant amount of troops and equipment destroying these ships would end the invasion. A Drone and or Rotor wing aircraft deck. Drone support suite. Ramps or cranes to move logistics and vehicles onto and off the ship quickly whether by sea or air. They could/should also be set up to operate like an offshore base if obtaining ground is not possible or simply not practical.
You're the definition of a keyboard warrior. The whole Battlefield visual you have in your head isn't real. I know it looks cool, and theoretically could happen, LCAC's are not combat vehicles. They are logistics vehicles. The classic 'amphibious assault" against an enemy entrenched on the beach is not going to happen. It is reckless and stupid. Modern defensive technologies make such a thing extremely dangerous. As for your suggestions, pretty much everything you mentioned exists and operates on these ships. AAV's can operate off of amphibious assault ships, there are quarters for thousands of troops on those ships, it will surrounded by escorts to protect it as it will operate as part of a strike group (specifically what is called an amphibious readiness group: ARG), the connector has a massive flight deck so idk if you even bothered to watch the video or not, and the thing is literally bristling with cranes, ramps and space for logistics. What on Earth are you talking about?
This crap British government don’t even use hovercraft ferries anymore and the British invented the Hovercraft
The Royal Marines use hovercraft and the UK is one of only a few places that still use them commercially.

just imagine if there are no aggressors like xi jinping of china, the money spent for these war equipment/facilities can be used to better the lives of the people. although some of the innovations developed for war can actually be used for commercial purposes still, the impact of war can reverse development.
My biggest question in this is once that air cousin has a hug hold in it what happens then
