How I Made a 6 Foot Collage | Large Scale Collage Art Scaling an Image Sticking Paper to Wood Panel

- Let's make the biggest collage I have ever made! I jumped in the deep end, creating this 6 foot collage! My goal for many years was to try large scale collage art but it never happened... until now!
I first planned it out as a digital mockup to ensure the canvas scale would work. I then worked through the process of getting it ready for print. This involved scaling an image to sizes I haven't done before. Once delivered, I cut out all the pieces and got to work on adhering it to the board. I tried a few options as to how to stick paper to wood panel but settled on a few different adhesives in combination.
I used a local print shop for the printing. To get images this large it needed to be done on an industrial sized printer.
After a careful reflection, I'd advise other collage artists to scale their work slowly. I had to learn A LOT on the fly and this could have been prevented. I was on a timeline but I'd recommend taking your time. It was like learning to collage again, from scratch.
Please feel free to ask any questions in the comments.

I really admire that you just went for it -- and it turned out great. It makes me realize that I need to stop getting in my own way.
Good luck with the show.
You can do it! The worst thing that could happen is it doesn't work out the first time. Give it a try! Thanks for watching ❤️
Wow, what a mammoth project, but you definitely nailed it! Looks amazing! Well done Leah! 👏👏👏
Amazing! I can’t imagine tackling something that large. Glueing those huge pieces would have given me a heart attack!!! Great job!!!
Haha! I definitely was 😂 it was so scary. But the final results made it all worth it.
Just WOW WOW WOW!!!!
Thank you!!! So happy with the final product.
Hi, from México city well done, this one was big congrats 💯👌👍
Thank you 🙌
Gorgeous!
Thank you! Cheers!
Good job! Quite the undertaking!
Thank you! Still can't believe I did it!!!
What a nightmare you did well to pull that off!
Truly was having heart palpitations 😂 but so worth it for the end results.
Wow that was really big. It’s very pretty. You said the body was the hardest part to glue but I could have never worked with the plants and hats with out make a big mess. Great job and thanks for sharing
It was definitely all difficult, don't get me wrong! 😂 I am shocked it went as well as it did if I am being honest!
Wow!!!
Beautiful !!!
Thank you! 😍
Great job! By the way. It turned out beautifully!
It is stunning!
Thank you so much 😊
Contact Cement works great when working on a large scale and time consuming before sealing… might wanna try it
Great suggestion, next time I will definitely experiment before committing
Wow what a challenge. Thanks for sharing your process. The final result looks terrific :)
After having done this, what would you do differently? The complicated challenge of adhering the large collage pieces to the substrate is what keeps me working small. Like you, I'd love to go bigger, but am always worried I'm going to destroy my papers.
Thank you for this question. I think if I didn't have a deadline I would have done tests for wallpaper glues, wood glues, etc. I worry about the longevity of it sticking but I am going to resin it so I don't have to worry too much about that. I'd also maybe not go THIS big. I did one that was 48x48. I felt that was very doable and not as stressful. It may be a matter of scaling slowly to adjust to the scale vs diving into the deep end 😂
@@flanzella thanks for the response. Nice job diving into the deep end and thanks for sharing your experience. I'm planning a collage that is 8" x 8' (basically a really long panoramic). I'm excited but nervous. My husband requested it for a specific hi visibility spot in our house. It will likely be easier than yours though as the individual collage elements are smaller and easier to glue down w/o folding in on themselves.
Wow! That is such a fun idea! Will it be on wood board? Planning out something that long would definitely be a struggle!
@@flanzella yeah, it will be on a wood panel. I am considering resining it, but I haven’t ever resined anything that large. 🤔
amazing!!!
Amazing!!!!
Thanks!!
Congratulations on your amazing achievement 🎉 The end result is very successful 👏👏👏
Thank you so much!!
Wow You did great. And what an awesome idea you had to make a big collage. Way to go!
Thanks so much! 😊 I am glad I stuck with my gut and gave it a try!
Roll the print to the other side next time 😊the priny paper will be flattend ,so easy to cut
Thanks for the tip!
What printing services did you use? I'd like to try this.
Are you planning to make more videos like this?
I just used a local printer but it's printed on their standard poster paper with a matte finish. This poster was their max size of 50x60". I do intent to work larger in future for sure. But I may take a bit of a break as I plan out the next one after a few art shows I have coming up.
WOW and WOW and WWWW-OOOO-WWWW!
AbsolutelY STUNNING!!! "Respect!" (:
Thank you so much, it was quite the challenge!
Amazing!
Good job!!!
Thanks!! Thanks for watching.
The final piece looks stunning,So inspiring that you took collage to such a large scale. I love that the final piece has a retro vintage look, but also a more contemporary piece, but also a surreal element and also invokes vanitas paintings too. If that piece goes into your exhbition/show I think it will prove a real talking point with viewers. (matt) P.S I am creating pieces for your April prompts list and posting them on my Pinterest page, created a board especially. Hope you have had a great easter weekend. (Matt)
Thank you so much, I couldn't agree more. I was cautious in choosing images that could still give the vintage feel in a more contemporary setting. I hope the viewers like it!
Amazing! I'm sure I'll see them on Pinterest. Hope you are enjoying the prompts.
@@flanzella I love the challenge of the prompts I created pieces for the first four prompts so far and found I had a few ideas for them.
Hi, could you please share where you purchased the panels. I'm in Saskatchewan and may need to order a few for a project.
Maarsii 🌟
His Maarsii, I bet any local craft shops should have them, like Michaels? This one specifically was custom made by a woodworker who only does pickup in Toronto so there wouldn't be a way for you to use his services!
Yeah, i don't think glue sticks would be enough for this piece
