A New Hobby to get Obsessed with: Puff Quilting for Beginners
I got the urge to make a king sized puff quilt as a little project while I encounter possibly the most busy time of my life. Other forms of quilting can be intimidating. This one felt so easy as a beginner and was very enjoyable.
Crafting really is therapeutic and it helped me through this move! This is more of a diary style video, showing off every step. Soon I will make a quick tutorial video so look out for that! Enjoy!

CONGRATULATIONS 🎉❤ LOVE IT!!!
Congrats on all your wins!! What a sweet way to close out 2024 🎉❤
Amazing
Thanks for sharing. It is gorgeous and you perseverance in getting it to where you wanted it is most admirable. I probably would have ended up with a smaller quilt or an unfinished project.
It was definitely a lot of work, but so worth it! 😺
Well done Leah. Love the colour way. Good luck with your move and have a lovely Christmas(-: Marion 🎉
Thank you Marion, I hope you do as well ❤️
I'm impressed on how fast you put that together! Beautiful!!
Thanks! This was my first one and I was surprised how quick it went too! 😯
Beautiful
Was so fun watching this whole process… I think it’s the “ mistakes” that we learned from, and it adds character. The vintage China I inherited from my great grandmother has some chips on it, but it always makes me think of how she used it and said that her table makes me think of her. This turned out so lovely this puff quilt I’ve done quilting, but I’ve never done a puff quilt and now I want to give it a try
You probably figure this out as you go along, but pleat each square so that it fits at each corner. You don’t wait till the end of the row cause then you’re gonna come up with well if you’re like me you want each one to meet at the corners.
Love the quilt! Keep in mind that I noticed this because it's a mistake I've made with sewing in the past (and probably would again if I tried to tackle this project), but the reason yours was so much smaller is I think you were cutting your blocks 7" instead of 8", and then in your math, you forgot to factor in seam allowance. If I had done this project and gotten to where you did with the quilt being so much smaller than planned, I probably would have just said, "Okay, this is the size it is" and called it a day. lol I am super impressed with how fast you made this. A+ productive procrastination! ;)
Thank you! I am so glad you enjoyed the video! It's a lesson I had to learn the hard way but honestly was getting sad it was almost over so it was nice to have more to do. When I set my mind to something there's no changing it 😂

You quilt too! Glad there's overlap in audiences for collage and quilting! Yes! I did my best to but some definitely were not even 😅
lol. It takes a lot of fussing about to make it look random.
Ha ha. Welcome to the rabbit hole!!
Can totally relate to the procrastination and hyperfocus on new crafts and hobbies. But that's just my ADHD talking 😅 Quilting is just collage for textiles, right? 😂 Omg. And now I searched "quilt collage" and I'm definitely headed down another rabbit hole 😅 I would be totally on board if you started making videos and posting about other arts and crafts you enjoy. Like please share maybe like a unisex clothing sewing design with the patterns? I'd love that ❤ I hope everyone is doing well, and having a lovely weekend. Happy holidays, everyone 💚
I do intend to expand my channel to my other crafts since they're becoming larger scale! I do think quilting ties so easily into collage! Glad you can relate 😂
Leah the final qulit looks amazing, and with the colours and patterns of fabric you chose,it has the retro/vintage look of your collage pieces. As I was watching I was thinking if the puff quilting could be translated in some way into paper collage?maybe a base image then overlayed with an image printed onto velum or acetate perhaps...(matt) P s hope you have a great christmas and a great start to 2025 as well
Really great ideas! I definitely agree it's unlocked a new part of my brain to think in squares for example. Or bringing textiles into my practice
Beautiful! Your fabric choices were perfect!
Thank you! I think it may be the hardest part but having them all with me really helped. I love how they all work together!
Yay! Great. I'd love to see more collage artists and their practice. I have saved a ton of paper rip outs, recyled wraping etc. and am turning a bedroom in our apartment into my writing and art space.
Wonderful! I enjoyed making this and would like to do more.
@flanzella I look forward to watching.
Fantastic. I can’t believe you made it so quickly.
Honestly, me neither 😂 I half expected it to take months.
thank you for making this video, it was super insightful!
We're so happy for you and proud of you, Leah 💚 all your dreams, goals and hard work is paying off. We will help support and encourage you in any way we can. 2025 is the year of Leah! (Happy Endings TV show, year of Penny reference 😅)
I’m so happy and excited for you!! ❤️
Congratulations 👏🏿🎉🎉🎉 so happy for you and the journey ahead
Yes! You can. Happy for you.
Leah this is fantastic news!,you have such a postive drive and focus for all aspects of your art. Hope you have a wonderful wedding and that your new studio space really fires up your creativity and inspiration. I sense that 2025 really will be your year. (matt) Have a fantastic xmas and a great start to 2025
Huge congrats Leah!! Looking forward to seeing the studio tour and watching what's next.
You are glowing!! 🤍 I am so happy for you!
A big congratulations to you! I’ve been following you for some time and watched you make huge progress. Best wishes all around. On your marriage, only the very best ♥️🍾🌲🙏🏻. Your dedication and passion for your art will bring you happiness and success. You are shining bright. Keep up the good work.
So proud of you ❤
Congratulations on you upcoming marriage! So excited for you!
Thank you! So excited for this next chapter.
Thank you for researching this & making this video.
My question is about stencils. If you re using a stencil someone designed, and the rule is changing it by say 30%….im not quite certain what that means.
This is fantastic You have great interview skills and the artist that you highlight are so interesting. I look forward to the next post in this series.
Love your method. Similar to mine.
What kind of printer and paper you use to print your calendars?
What kind of paper and printer do you use to make your calendars
This is very fun! How is it that you are allowed to sell art prints when the images you are using are surely copyrighted?
One medium, five media. Props++ for pronouncing the Ts in imporTanT. If it is one it is not plural. If they are plural, they are not one. "Give me those."
I like your style of collage 🎉
Also, thank you sooooooo much for being the type of person who allows thier guest to talk without interrupting them. It's such an underrated skill. Active listening is far too rare ❤
It's my pet peeve when people talk over the guest!!! I agree. I am lucky to have interview experience from work and actively try to never interrupt. Glad you noticed.
This is soooooo amazing, Leah! I loved this episode, but also can't wait for what episodes are to come in The Artist's Cut 😊 Really admire Mary's enthusiasm, drive, creativity, resourcefulness, can do attitude, and so much more. It's inspiring. Especially love her collage origin story, and one of the reasons I've always thought collage was one of the best art mediums/forms, just making do with what you have on hand and pushing yourself to be creative with limited source materials. No pressure, but now I'm super excited for more podcast/interview/videos like this. I hope the wedding planning is going well 😊 And hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend 💚
I could listen to you and Mary talk about art for hours. I'm also a huge architecture nerd, and I'm not obsessing over the stunning intricacy and depth of Colleen's work 😮 I really hope she will be one of the guests in future, because I would absolutely love to listen to her talk about her process. Omg. I now wish I lived in Hamilton. Or at least hope to visit one day. What an amazing community Mary has created ❤ just being able to attend some of the workshops she spoke about would be a dream 😅
I'm so glad you enjoyed. Glad you could listen for hours, because we do 😂 Colleen's work is so stunning. I LOVE it. I'd love to see if she is interested in an interview. She does so many cool workshops! I wish I was closer to go to more.
I agree! Mary is amazing and I am so excited to continue with The Artists' Cut and interview other artists!
It’s always been a dream of mine to do pretty much what she has done with her garage. I would have loved to hear more about the business side of things, since nothing is free and one does need to pay the bills.
I'm so glad, I knew other's would be interested in doing this! Maybe I can get her for a follow up video to answer some of these questions! Like any business, it takes time to build the monetary pat of the business.
I love your idea about interviewing artists and doing this presentation independently. I love your analog collages and watch your UA-cam channel often. So thanks for this new idea. Congrats and hope there are many more
I'm glad you liked the interview. This was such a great video to film since I work with Mary in person often. People like this exist in so many communities and I find them so inspiring. Glad you found this helpful. 😀
Love love love this! Very inspiring especially for me as a beginner craving to learn as much as possible. Please do many more artists’ cut! When I wake up, check UA-cam and you have posted a video, it always brightens my day and inspires me to just keep showing up to my passion of creating collage art. 😊 Thank you! You truly make our world a better place!!!
Thank you for this encouragement. It's always a risk to trying a new format at here, I am glad it was well received. Glad I am inspiring you to create, that is my goal! ❤
Leah a great video to start the "Artist's Cut" series.Mary is so inspiring and has achieved much already, the gallery is a great little space and I love how it's become part of the community, and created a local art scene as well, and that is also a working space for workshops and artist drop in sessions is also brilliant. It shows how art really does have the ability to reach out and engage with others and what it can lead to.(Matt) Would love to see you talk with Ashley of Chaotic Collage, she has this inspiring dynamism in her work
Yes to talking to Ashley at Chaotic Collage!
I am so glad you enjoyed the talk. It really is an amazing space and it shows if we make spaces for an art community, it will come! I love the idea of talking to Ashley, she's so inspiring!
Did you seal the images that you scanned and printed? With what? May I ask how you keep the ink from smearing? ty
Just because "those norms" you talk about from the vintage magazines "are not normal" anymore doesn't necessarily mean they are "misogynistic" although for sure there was misogyni in those times (and also now). For the same reason not all magazines are necessarily misandrous in these days when hate and criminalization from many, many women towards men and masculinity are on HIGH arise. We are men and we are PROUD to be men and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Long life to men! Men Power! ❤ PD: You say "you love to challenge the status quo and critic it" well you have a golden chance to critic now all the unfair prosecution and criminalization we men have to suffer being all treated as creeps, and plenty of all other unimaginable bad stuff.. PD2: Nice collage by the way💞😊
Hello! I'm a collage artist too and finding these videos made me feel more secure about myself and my art. You really inspire me to create and even risk someday to make videos too! You're amazing :)
My sister is a portrait artist. She has been doing portraits using photos since before she was a teenager. Now in her 70's and a stroke victim, she has lost use of her dominant right side....and continues her art left handed now!!! Amazing! I can't draw anything recognizable, but love love love collage, and make 'junk journals' w magazine and book pictures and scraps. It is so rewarding and fun! Altered books is what interests and inspires me now...I keep tearing, clipping and gluing to stay in my happy place! Ha!
Congratulations on the wedding! Thats a BIG DEAL! Plus the move (which is really stressful) But you'll get through it and just remember to have fun and experience each step of the process. I'm sure your wedding will be beautiful! You've really gotten me thinking about where I want to go with my art business. I sell jewelry on Etsy and have been really successful for 14 years.Last November, I hit a wall and haven't posted new pieces, although I did re-take a lot of photos ,which helped. I'm still selling, just not like I was. I decided to retire from my job in health care when Covid hit and so, I do need the income from my web site. Its just me supporting myself. I need to just pick up my tools and start. I know I'll get back into it. I have decided to join a membership to a space where I can use some of the larger tools I don't have. that will help, just being around other jewelry designers. Thanks for all your ideas about getting inspired and keeping it fresh.
Congratulations! Thanks for the update. I hope you relax and have the most stupendous time at your wedding.
