Future of Canada Commission Artwork: Large Commission Artwork Reflecting the Future of our World
Art Print Drop: www.flanzella.com/
Join me as I create a commission collage artwork for the inspiring Future of Canada Project! In this project, my commissioner is traveling to classrooms across the country, engaging with students and asking them to envision what Canada could look like in 2080 if we addressed climate change, achieved truth and reconciliation, solved health crises, and built inclusive education systems.
In this video, I’ll visit one of these classrooms, gather inspiration from the students, and transform their visionary ideas into my own unique collage art. This piece will then become part of a traveling show across Canada, showcasing the collective dreams of our future leaders.
Don't miss out on this creative journey! Make sure to like, comment, and subscribe to follow along as we reimagine the future of Canada together.
This piece ends up being a rather large commission artwork, and I’ll take you through how I created this piece. It was an interesting task to make art reflecting the future of our world. My art is often critical, but in this piece it had to be positive. Overall the results stunned me, as I was able to bring in so many messages about my views on the future of Canada.

If you are in Canada, keep an eye out for dates on when the show will visit your Province or Territory.

Hi Leah, I'm only halfway through your vid and loving it so far. FYI: "Fairy Pie" on your site is mislabled as "Sleepiing Taj". I didn't want people to miss out on that beautiful piece (of pie 🙃)
OMG THANK YOU. I've fixed it. Thanks.
Congratulations on being selected for this project! Thanks for showing the process start to finish. I see this piece as learning from history, applying what works and discarding what didn't work. The title that came to my mind was "Past, Present, Perfect." You mentioned having images of people doing weird things 8:30 and my first thought was that maybe 50 years from now, unique people are more accepted for their individuality rather than being ostracized. That might be a good piece to do at some point!
That's a great way of phrasing it and is exactly my intent with it. With every decision for the future, the past needs to be weighed into the equation. And I like the name idea 😁 Haha! I love that idea. Maybe I'll save them all and start collecting more.
back to the beginning of what? colonialism?
Yeah, this might be unintentional and is very much a baked-in weakness of her methods, but her vision of what Canada's future looks like if we "do everything right" is overwhelmingly white, and very conspicuously missing any First Nations people. As settlers, this is something we *really* need to be cognizant of, as even when it's inadvertent, it makes a very specific, very strong statement. Frankly, in this, the Year of Y'all's Lord 2024, it's a necessity for white people who get tapped for projects like this to ask themselves if they're *really* the right person to craft these types of visions of the future.
In the artist statement I'm writing, I cover the implications and connotations of old magazines and how it's impossible to make decisions without first analyzing the past. The past, present, and future are not going to be 100% positive, but there are things in the past we did better than we do today. Given there are 13 artists creating for the show, the pieces will cover different topics, not all the topics in each piece. My classroom wanted to focus on environmental impact so that's what this piece is about. I guess it just shows the flaws in the process of the project itself. But I'm happy to be a part of something that is finally a positive message after so much negativity. This piece is VERY CLEARLY not about colonialism.
@@flanzella Is the artist statement going to address the fact that your vision of Canada's future has no First Nations people, and the fact that all the white people are engaging in leisure while the only people engaging in labor are the very few POC? Because right now, your piece is colonialism made manifest.
What a cool project! I'm interested to see the other works this inspiring teacher has prompted with this important theme. In my opinion, the problem with using vintage magazines is their extreme lack of inclusivity. You rarely see bright, happy images of folks of colour wearing big smiles and riding shiny bikes. I find often in collages using vintage material it leans heavily toward being white-centric. Its hard to make positive commentary on topics like truth and reconciliation that way. I don't mean to be critical, this piece is beautiful, but I did notice the images of people of colour used are darker/less vibrant and depict them working in fields where as the white people are engaged in leisure activities. It could be read a certain way that's not intended.
100% agree with you, I'm covering this topic within the artist statement as it's important to highlight. The magazines themselves hold the lens of a white male gaze. I'm going to talk about those limitations and how the focus is on environmentalism.
Congrats! I love the piece!
Thank you! Cheers!
What a great choice was made in selecting you. You rock… from a 75 year old collage artist fan from Montréal.
Aww thank you so much Linda, I'm glad you like it. Keep an eye out for when it tours next year, maybe it'll be coming to Montreal!
Leah congratulations on this really important commision, and to be part of an exhibition that is touring your home country asking a really important question about how we see our future is a brilliant idea, and I like that it was a creative challenge for you in that it had to be an optimistic piece. But we do sometimes look at the current world and long for a time when things were better, simpler,a kind of needful nostalgia. Great that you got to interact with the kids and be inspired by their thoughts on how they saw the future. I sense this project is about a legacy through art,but also future proofing through art a vision of the future.Using upcycled images of the past to invoke a future world is a great idea. Listening to you talk as you began to build the piece and you asking for ideas for a title for the finished piece, what about "Past Future Utopia" came into my mind as I watched and listened to you, drawing on the better aspects of our past to envision a better furure. (matt)P..s I loved the Big cat face image, you have to create a piece around that it's such a striking image maybe have it as the centre of a piece and build out from it,but I could see so much potential in that image.
I love the way you've said "drawing on better aspects of our past to envision a better future". It summarizes this entire piece for sure. There is a lottttt of bad from our past, and lots in our current world. It's why it made it such an interesting topic to create art on. I bet a lot of artists could make a lot of interesting artworks on this. I like your name suggestion! Thanks for watching.
Congratulations Leah🎉. I love your work.
Thank you so much! 😊
Awesome piece and love you sharing the story about taking on this commission! It really was inspiring to see how you were able to go in a larger scale without just printing the images bigger. The greenery background was a terrific idea and I think your piece really shows the story you intended. Once again, thank you for sharing your experiences, they get me excited to create and teach me something new every time.
Thank you! Yea I definitely knew I wanted to keep with the original papers when I got the commission since it'll be a permanent collection, lasting mark of my work! I'm glad you liked it.
Congratulations on the commission Leah! What an interesting and challenging project. ❤
Thank you so much! I just dropped it off and they loved it 😍 so that made my day.
lol i think it scares away people if the have to talk to someone else (hence no sales 😝)
Agreed! It adds an obstacle.
This is why I like drawing/painting/creating my own collage papers.
Yo hago collage como hobby y m gusta ese lugar ❤❤❤saludos desde Argentina
The only people who gain from fairs are the organisers. They never lose out. They compliment your work, praise you up and willingly take your money, only to let the artist down with no sales.
Yes, they're the only ones who 100% don't lose. But I have watched some artists sell six figures of artworks at these fairs. I do see certain value in doing them in the first 5 years of an artist's career though.
That was really fun! Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
17:10 - wait, what were the questions??
This changes sometimes but usually I like to cover all the pieces and their meaning. Then the generic ones are what the medium is, the process of creating the art, where you find inspiration, where I find my papers, do I have a studio, how often do I make work, what are the themes, are they original papers, how do I protect original papers, artists of inspiration... (Those are just off the top of my head but I do have a list I write out!)
Great video! Congrats on selling some pieces. Looks like an awesome trip. I hope you bought the orange sequin(?) top! It was adorable on you 🧡
Thank you Janet!!! It was so lovely 🤩 It was too tight but I loved it 😭
So pretty
Appreciate it 😁
Thankyou this is very inspiring .. just coming back to collage after card making so I tend to incorporate inks and blending well I suppose it becomes mixed media in a sense 🤔loving doing collage again tho
What a fantastic video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! And I hope your own show went swimmingly ❤️
What a great, informative and generous video! I haven't done any events like this yet, but your suggestions were such good ones and made me feel like I would be more prepared if I decide to go for an art fair in the future. I don't know if art fairs offer this, but I have learned from some of the competition shows I've been in, that being aware of what sort of insurance is involved can be important. I do collage as well as mixed media so most of my pieces are pretty economical as for the products used, but we all care about our art, right? So, I've learned that it is good to be aware if there is any insurance coverage just in case something bad does happen. Thank you, once again, for sharing what you have learned!
I'm so glad to hear, that was exactly my intent for this video 😍 Insurance is definitely a part of it. Most shows offer packages for this, but it's a "mandatory" extra cost on top of the show. I don't use a specific company for it because of this. I'm hoping to build out a video course and dive really deep into all the extra costs that come up, and a lot more tips. I quickly realized when filming I could have made this video HOURS long. I'm so glad it encouraged you in the right direction 😊 we need more collage out there representing ❤️ I won't rest til I see collage in every art fair 😜
As a kid, it seemed so glamorous and exciting to me to see artists selling their beautiful creations at art shows. The reality is so much time, effort and money invested with the possibility of not making enough sales to cover costs! Yikes. Glad you so did well with your show. Thank you for sharing your experience and some really great tips. Wishing you continued success in future exhibitions.
I couldn't agree more with you! Even just before really honing in on my practice and deciding to go the business route, I had no perspective of how they costed artists' resources. I didn't understand why people weren't doing them more often. Thank you 😊
Thanks much! Kathleen
Hope it helps 🍀
A 36 minute video from my favorite artist?? Thank you universe!!
Omg, this comment made my day ❤️ thank you!!!!
Well done! You've left me genuinely impressed.
Awww, I'm so glad to hear it ❤️
I've recently found you, and love your channel. I enjoy collage also. I am also an artist with a chronic illness. Your video really resonated with me. Good for you for your honesty! We have to keep going, and art is so empowering. May I ask, what make is your paper cutter please? Looking forward to binge watching your content! x Nell. Ooh! I've just been in your shop and im ordering your paper pack to send to me in Aus! 😊
Hi Nell, I'm so glad you related to this ❤️ I agree that art can be empowering when we are in situations we feel stuck in. Are you talking about the straight line cutter? If so I think this one: Fiskars Precision Paper Trimmer - a.co/d/502ABcO

Did you ever ever ever know that your name is mentionned a ten times in the great قرآن ?.
Saying the above , الله عز و جل referred it to him in a chapter wich he called by "the most merciful" , he referred it -your name-to him in ten times per each.
After all that , how lucky are you to been named by a likely name , referred to him by him-glorious-self , and a chapter he called by " the most merciful" . REALLY , IT'S ONCE IN A BLUE MOON.
That "soldier's sweetheart" postcard at 15:42--for 99% of people watching this, Delaware, Ohio is Nowheresville, but for me--it's my hometown!
AW! I can't believe that. I almost bought that one too 😜
Oh I also loved all the clothes on you.. even the ones you didn’t.. 😅
LOL! Thank you, was such a fun store I was loving it.
AMAAAAAZING!! And super super proud of you! Thanks for also sharing all the other art! I’m dying to go to NY and see the galleries!
You've gotta go at some point, it was such an easy trip to make from TO! Thank you 😊❤️
What a cool looking venue to celebrate world collage day with other collage artists,so glad you had an inspiring and creative day, your journal pieces look fantastic
Isn't it so cool? It's a theatre most of the time. I need to start getting into junk journalling again, it was so freeing!
Great Video, thoroughly enjoyable & well done in selling some art.
Thank you so much 😀 it was a great time for sure.
I just found this video and I feel so seen! I have very little surface space and I’m constantly going between wanting to organise my clippings better and leaving some level of discovery and serendipity in my material. Some day I’ll have my own space to work with and these tips will come in so handy. Thank you for sharing!
It can be so difficult to maneuver a small space! I like to joke the space needed to collage is INFINITE! 😂 Glad you found this helpful for the future.
Wonderful. I want to do that.
I know! I was so lucky to have met someone at my art show who knew the organizer and got me an invite ❤️
Great vid!
Thanks ❤️
Congratulations on selling your first day, that must feel really good. :-) That postcard stop at Chelsea would have grabbed me all day. I collect vintage postcards in odd lots and end up with the most amazing things. They say so much about culture and are great jumping off points for making art. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you 😊 isn't it incredible? It was a nice surprise. I totally agree with you, they're a staple in time that I just can't help but be fascinated by.
Thank you for sharing this amazing trip! I'm happy you checked out the museums and shared your visits. Hilma Klimt was such a fascinating person as well as artist! 5:30 Magritte is one of my favorites 6:25 and 6:31. I remember the Guggenheim as a kid and was fascinated by the spiral layout 😄 Sorry it was closed for your visit. Your setup looked wonderful! Happy you made some sales. I'm sure it was a very exciting and nerve wracking experience overall. Glad you learned a lot and glad your mom could accompany you.
Hilma was WAY ahead of her time, my goodness. What a story. I'm glad you spotted some you know! Yes, lots of stress leading up to it but it felt unnecessary once there. It was overall so fantastic. I've learned so much!
Congratulations on selling two pieces on opening night of the show. So fantastic you got to see some amzing works of art at Moma and the Guggenhiem. I loved the really diverse mix of art that was in the show with you and glad you got to network and make new connections and gain some future oppertunities. Wondeful that your Mum got to be on this trip with you too.The thrifting looked fun and yeilded some treasures. Hope New York has inspired you and fantastic that the show was a great learning curve for you as well. (matt) P.s Happy World Collage Day!! (today may 11th)
It was incredible. So much great art in New York! Happy world collage day!!! 🎇
@@flanzella So great Picasso's La Dameselles" was there and Magritte and Cezanne,I agree Hannah Klimt's art is really stunning too.The clay robots looked cute.Moma and Guggenheim are my two favourite museums as well.Sounds like the show gave you a lot to take forward on your creative path too (Matt) p.s a collage artist I follow here on UA-cam and pintrest called Fox Carlson, has just started selling collage kits, might be worth maybe doing an exchange with him and maybe a collaboration
❤
Congratulations on all aspects of this NY experience! It’s not always about the money, for sure! And - how wonderful to have your mom join you! This blog was fabulous and so beautifully done! Thanks for the vicarious New York visit! Kathleen
I couldn't agree more. It felt like the beginning of a new chapter for my art business 😄 really excited for the future opportunities that this trip lead to. So glad you liked it ❤️
❤
I feel like I just took an artsy little NYC trip before heading out into my garden to work on my rose hedge. Thanks for sharing your show with us!
Aww I'm so glad you felt that way; it was so inspiring for me. I hope it inspires others ❤️
Love this end-of-the-world stuff.
Me too!!! I'm still inspired to make more.
You need to do a vintage medical collage wiith gross anatomical pics
This is VERY educational. Thanks for the video. I love your art too. Keep it up!! :)
So glad it was helpful for learning 🥰✨ thank you!!!
✨💖✨
✨💖✨Sometimes I feel dissatisfied when trying to blend different eras or tones of papers. Have you tried using a light wash on the background or focal point to knock back the brightness of one or the other? I've had mixed results but I like it when it helps. I've used water color or coffee.
I agree with you, it can be rather hard! I like the vintage black and white with brighter new magazines. I have not tried but I do know of other artists that do this. My compositions usually work out without having to as I don't mix eras as often. But if you experiment let me know what happens!
Congrats! It looks like a fabulous art experience for you and all! Enjoy! Kathleen
It really is! Thank you!
