I too have the Rock Island 1911 A1 FS, of course in 45 ACP. My dad was at Normandy WWII and loved his 1911. I'm retired 'Nam vet and LOVE MY ROCK.. I also reload my 45's. It operated flawlessly in both reloads or factory. Dad passed away going on 10 years, and just wish he could've seen and shot this Rock Island. Awesome Gun, Love it.

This was my first 1911 as well as my first handgun. I've owned mine for close to a year and have approximately 1300 rounds through it. I love it, and still carry it. I've had one single mishap, where the slide didn't stick back after the last round, but no stovepipes, jamming or extraction issues to report. I plan to buy another carry pistol, and use this 1911 as an entry level gunsmithing project. Great video man.

I own a Kimber 1911, Springfield compact 1911, and a Rock Island Armory 1911. I’ve shot all 3, and put several rounds through them. It might be low budget, but I carry it concealed, and trust my life to it as well as I would my othe 2 1911’s.

When I started looking for a 1911, I researched the crap out of the different models in the $500 - $900 price range. The Rock Island Arms 1911 .45 ACP has a very good ratings. I ended up buy a ParaUSA Black Ops with G10 grips and Trijicon night sights, which I love. But the RIA was hard to pass up, especially for that kind of money.

I recently bought a Rock island basic GI model 1911 since--like you--my significant other would probably take an expensive Colt or Kimber and shoot me with it if I blew $1500-$2000 on a pistol. (She's a very good shot.) I've only had it for a month and have taken it to the range every weekend to break it in--and break me in since I haven't fired a 1911 since it was my issue weapon when I was an AG on an M60 machinegun team all those years ago. So far, the Rock Island has been a dreamboat. It's unerringly accurate (for me) and melds to my hand like it belongs there. A great investment.

Andrew Fernandez, recently (a week ago) I was checking out the Rock Island Pro Match 45 w/the 5 inch barrel. I was pleasantly impressed with the craftsmanship. Slide/frame fit was tight, there is no wiggle or slop. Same with bushing/barrel fit. Trigger pull was clean and smooth, no creep whatsoever. Thumb safety snicked on and off cleanly and crisply. There are no sharp edges, seems the workers really did expend an extra time smoothing out the edges. Truth be told.....that specimen that I held......was better than most recently made Colts and Springfield factory 1911s I handled. Buy one!

These guns come in a plastic bag in the case because they are packed with mass oil because of the moist climate of the Philippines. So u can run them out of the box if u like. Only seen a SKS and a Mosin with more lube when purchased LOL. The first thing i did was take mine apart to de lube and clean but i always dis assemble any new gun before i run it.

But I held a STI, a Kimber, and a RIA in a local gun store.

Dude couldn't agree more, this is a great gun! It was my first 1911 too. It's a solid platform for a 1911. That single action trigger helps your accuracy. I'd highly suggest a meprolight front sight for 26$ from Amazon and I just added g10 grips so it feels/looks like a new gun. Other than a Wilson mag flare mines bone stock. Good vid dude!

I have an RIA 1911 too, like you it was my entry into the 1911 world. I don't think that I could have done better, the whole experience with the RIA has been positive. Although the price point was that of an entry level weapon, I found the build quality to exceed my expectations and has continued to work flawlessly with every type of ammo I've ran through it. I've been impressed to the point that I don't give other brands serious consideration for purchase.

I got a Wilson Combat from year 2000 in 45 ACP. I needed 1911 in 9mm to give the WC a rest between IDPA, Bowling Pins and Steel matches. After researching and reading lots of good things of the Rock pistols; I bought the 9mm for $538 + 20 transfer fee. Great gun, just added some Wilson Combat magazines. Very accurate and reliable.

Purchased mine back in December 2018. Finally shot it last weekend on a camping trip. I own a Glock 9mm and now this .45 1911 and I have to say I am extremely impressed. The weight feels so good with a loaded mag. I was expecting a HUGE recoil kick prior to squeezing the trigger, just because of the round difference. I was surprised at how smooth and soft the kick was. The weight of the gun helps with the accuracy and feels better in your hand and being fired than a Glock. No need to add all the crazy mods to this. It looks good as is. Might custom engrave the wood grips.

    I have one. Love it!
I dabbed some white nail polish on the top of the front sight to enhance it. Maybe try another bright color instead as you can lose the tip of the sight when shooting white targets. I shoot at a fairly dark indoor range.
After a couple of years I needed to buy an inexpensive Wolff spring set to replace my recoil spring and especially my firing pin spring that let me down one day at the range. Other than that little bit of expected maintenance, the gun and the Mec Gar magazines have functioned flawlessly.

I've had my RIA 1911 rock standard .45acp for a couple of months now and i love it, i've changed my stock iron sights, swapped out a softer main spring, grip, added a mag well and chromed it all for a easier maintenance, but all the internal parts are stock. I've shot just under 2000 rounds had no problems with it at all. Everyone who saw my gun were impressed and were surprised it was a Rock Island Armory(or Armscor here locally in the the Philippines).
I am planning to buy a RIA pro match 5" .40s&w maybe next year for standard competition, but, there has been news about RIA making a 2011 platform compatible with STI/SVI parts and i am waiting for any confirmation on that news.

Honestly, from what I've been reading and watching on youtube, this will 100% be not only my first handgun but also my daily carry. I went to an indoor shooting range early this year and tested quite a few of their handguns, different brands and many different calibers too. 9mm, .40 cal, .38 special, .357 magnum, and .45. Out of all the guns I shot, from glock, to sig, springfield, RIA, even a beretta, I found that the RIA m1911 fs gi in .45 not only felt more comfortable in my relatively large hands, I shot way better groups even at 20 yards than compared to ANY of the other handguns I used. Come tac return season, I am definitely getting one, I already have some of the stuff needed to clean it, aside from the bore brushes and all.

Back when the RIA pistols first came on the market and all they had was a basic GI spec model.... I picked one up used for like $300 out the door...
I cast and reload my own rounds... and shot the hell out of that thing... Out shot the Kimber Custom 2 I had there... same ammo, same shooter, same target, same day... the RIA was the better gun.
Buds has the model in this video for under $450 as of 2/4/19..... well worth it.
Spending more money on a 1911 doesnt get you better performance, only a nicer finish, custom parts and higher resale value. But the RIA will get the job done every bit as well as guns 2x its price

My first foray in the 1911 ownership, was parts a assembled vintage milsurp, Remington Rand Frame, Colt slide, and misc. surplus parts. I paid just $350, and it was a reliable shooter.
A fellow decided he wanted it $875 worth, and Mom raised no fools.
I some years later, I purchased a Cimarron Imported Rock Island in 2013. I still have it and it had untold rounds through it. It has the high polished finish; Cimarron was having Fords do the bluing then. I wanted the original style 1911 frame (not A1 style) and the polish blue on the guns in the early years before WW1. Now 10 years old it has performed flawlessly; the bluing has held up and the gun still looks like new.

I bought a Ruger SR1911 I think about 4 years ago... when they first came out. It is an excellent weapon but I’ve wanted a 1911 closer to the government Colts I used in the navy 40 some years ago. My choice has been the Colt Series 80 aka 1991 which lists for $799 if you can find one and I haven’t been able to. So I came across a Rock Island A1-FS for $400 and couldn’t resist. I have had plenty of buyer’s remorse until I put 50 rounds through it and found that it may well be my most accurate “iron sight” gun... in the top 3 anyway along with that SR1911 & my FS92... better than my Glocks even (17 & 26) but I guess they don’t count since I replaced the iron (really plastic) sights with TruGlo fiber optic ones. Sadly I am enough of a gun snob that I still want a Colt. Thanks for a great video! ;)

Really the only finicky 1911s these day are the sub compacts because of the recoil springs.
I think that bad reputation is from the days before the glocks and such when the jhp started coming out because the old colts and 1911s were not feed ramped to take the jhp. The late 70s and early 80s there was no such thing as a jhp.
I did a lot of feed ramp buffing and barrel throating and polishing in the 80s.
Funny thing I never had to alter a browning Hi power to feed jhp AND they were hi cap pistols.

Very nice video. I have a RIA 1911 GI FS and could not be happier with my purchase. I have more expensive guns however, this made me feel like I made a great purchase, that far exceeded my expectations for the money spent. Seems the RIA 1911 is a very good gun for the money. Inexpensive does not mean low quality. More people catch on every day about RIA, I hope the cost remains reasonable in the future.

I know. I feel like it was a steal and tell everyone about it. It seems I get a lot of people that look down on the gun when I tell them what kind of 1911 I have. but like I said until someone shoots it they don't know any better.

I was with you up til the Not cleaning it Part. I have a compulsion to clean my guns after every trip to the range. I get that you said you wanted to see when it has a problem, but intentionally causing the issue is not really a valid test. High round count should be done all at once to make a reliability test valid. I am glad to hear it still works, but what you are doing is like not changing the oil in your car to see how long the engine takes to explode. Thanks for being honest about it though. Not trying to bash you or your video, I just hate to see a precision ballistic tool not being taken care of to the best of your ability.

Not true. Even the military doesnt clean after every use. You can actually wear parts and finish prematurely. 500 to 1000 rounds is common for cleaning intervals. Military began experiencing less malfunctions and longer life with less cleanings.

I have two colts and they are both immaculate. They cost more because they don't use MIM parts. But I've also shot a RIA stanatd GI 1911 and it shot very accurately with no malfunctions. Thinking about getting one and putting some Fusion parts on it.
I also heard that Armscorp bought colts old factory in the Philippines. Maybe that's why RIA 1911 are so good. Don't know, but there is some interesting history in there.
    Ps:
If you do buy a Kimber be aware that Kimber overbuilds their 1911. They don't work properly until after 500 rounds.
I picked up a mainspring housing from them and it is awesome but it is very very tight and made my hammer excessively heavy. Took it apart and replaced it with a light spring. It's good to have heavy springs in some cases but not on the hammer.

The trigger out of the box was just under five pounds. It has served as my carry gun for the last three years and I have zero gripes. Folks talk about moving to "better guns" but the way I see it, if it does everything it is supposed to do, every time I pull the trigger, what is better?

I have one with the brown coating on it and Ambi safeties because I am a lefty. I have over 1k rounds through it with little to no wear on it and it never failed to feed or eject. I do use Wilson Combat & Cobra magazines only, also I did add A 18.5lb Chrome silicone recoil spring, GI recoil guide rod with plug, and a Wilson Combat magazine catch stainless which holds the magazines tight in the gun and that's it. My grandfather had his Colt 1911 from the '40s until he died and now my dad has it meaning what? My 2019 Rock Island 1911 would have been a Cadillac compared to my grandfather's 1911 which still fires to this day with just a full spring upgrade.
1911's are made by a lot of companies because they get the specifications and program their CNC machines to make every pistol the same a on point every time unlike the old days where even more people were needed to make one after milling.

I owned one myself back in about 2000. I can say they are pretty good for a starting pistol to buy. I ran 4,000 rounds through the frame, but that was because I used a .22 conversion kit for the pistol, and didn't have a problem with it. I did however, make it to about 800 or so rounds on the slide and barrel when I started having problem with the extractor break on me. The only problems I had with frame parts is the sear wore out the eventually wore the trigger.
