Our Favorite Built-In Vacuum: The MD Flo-Master F650T!

  • There are many options available to purchasers of central vac systems. Today's central vacuums are more powerful, quieter, and more hygienic than ever before -- far better than the best portable vacuum cleaners. However, in the field of built-in vacuum cleaners, how would you go about choosing the "best"? There are multiple manufacturers that make high-quality, premium equipment that we sell and recommend. But, if asked to choose a favorite, my choice has been the MD Central Vacuum. Their USA-made machines are fabricated of US Steel and powdercoated inside and out for durability even in the utilitarian areas where these units are typically installed. Unlike molded plastic housings, and those with single-stud mounting brackets, these units will not flex, distort, crack, or warp over decades of use. The exclusive triple intakes (left or right piping connection, plus center metal gasketed utility inlet) allow for easy and clean hookups without a "rollercoaster ride" or "spaghetti mess" of pipes such as single-intake or split-canister machines often have. The triple layered filtration system starts with the 8-gallon disposable Tru-Seal patented filter bag, which seals in many months' worth of vacuumed debris for clean emptying. This bag is augmented by the permanent cloth bag, which not only acts as a second layer of filtration, but also supports the disposable bag, enabling maximum airflow across the bag's entire surface area. This means full cleaning power for an extended period of time, and more economical operation. Beyond the permanent cloth support bag is a final mesh pad filter protecting the motor from debris in case of a failure or improper installation of the primary filters. Integrated into the MD Flo-Master is an air relief valve, which protects the machine in case of a blockage in the hose or piping. This valve opens to allow air to flow directly to the motor and cool it, and automatically resets when the blockage condition is removed. In addition to this safety valve are integrated thermal and overcurrent protectors. The unit can be exhausted to the outdoors, but we only recommend this if the machine is in a confined area or if odor control from vacuumed debris is a concern. The exhaust is clean, and thus can otherwise freely discharge into the area where the machine is located. "You can't beat a built-in vacuum" -- especially an MD Flo-Master!

Also have an MD in my house. As someone who collects, uses, and also installs these, MD is definitely my preferred unit.

I have this unit in my current house and love it. I just bought a new house and I’m having this unit installed there as well to replace an existing M&S system that was installed by the builder 20 years ago.

I love central vacs. and I too have a Flo-master. I have it vented and have put sound absorbing panels around it to keep it as quiet as possible although it's much quieter than those bottom fill brands that have a by-pass motor. Top fill, bagged, flo-thru motor, and vented is the way to go. The only thing I need to add to mine is the relief valve. I also use dual voltage inlets and wessel werks power nozzles.

Absolutely love my MD unit! So much better than the bagless machine it replaced. My parents MD Silentmaster is still going strong after 20 years.

Thanks for such a detailed video. Curious. I am looking at two units the MD Flow-Master F650T or the MD Air-Master A650TV. I am curious between the two units would you recommend one of the other? Specs seem the same, just one is top removal and the other bottom?

Hey Owen, great video, I'm a big central vacuum fan as well. I think I have at least one unit from every major brand, I have two MD units, the flomaster M85 which I think is similar to the 650 before they changed the model numbers, it's a great unit. I'm still using the open bags, will probably switch to the new style bags once I use up the open bags that I have. I also have the Silent Master S900, I think that's the model number, it's a 240 volt beast. Having a utility valve built in is nice, especially since I use all of my units without pipes. I think the only major brand that I don't have is cyclovac, perhaps I will get one of those at some point but they are not sold around here and you can't buy them on line either. I'm also a big fan of the Drainvac units, got several of those in my collection too. I love my central vacuum units.

Awesome units indeed! MD is one of my top recommended brands to anyone. I'd love to own one someday, although the new Cyclovac 7525 has certainly caught my interest:)
