Shenandoah is an old americana/folk song which may have originated as a sea-shanty around the time of The USA's civil war. Regardless of it's origins, I love this melody and if this is your first time hearing it, I hope I did it justice for you. Thanks again for watching!

Geoff - this song, arrangement, and performance is absolutely beautiful. I thought I'd give you a glimpse into how I listen to music so you can see why I appreciate you and your arrangements so much. There were three moments in particular that delighted me...
Right off the bat, the intro hanger note (A) (0:09) across several chords caught my ear. It's the fifth in the first chord (D); interestingly, the minor seventh in the second chord (B min); and deliciously, the second in chord #3 (G). See below for my thoughts on the seconds in chords. :D
The recurring A/G-ish chord (A C# D over G) which resolves to a G major triad (G B D) REALLY caught my ear. The A/G gives both an add2 and an augmented fourth to the G chord, which, for me, gives these recurring moments in the song a warm, momentary Lydian feel. Depending on context, Lydian to me always sounds either mystical/magical, or, in this case, hopeful and comforting, warm and delicious. Any add2 chord is already going to be my favourite as for some reason, this chord automatically gives me shivers/goosebumps. The background singers mimic this same Lydian-feel chord progression (2:27).
The first note of the verse (0:29) is a most perfectly hit, beautifully resonant, delicious, deep, delicious (oops, I said that already) chest A1 - a perfect introduction to a Low Bass Singer song. And, lucky us, you've given us THREE of these wonderful A1s. During the intro verse, you've sustained the piano decay, providing us with a sustained root D throughout this section, grounding it and providing a bit of lightness and even more interest to this section.
DELIGHTFUL MOMENT #1: "Across the wide Missouri" (2:01) - the melody line goes down to D and we, the audience, expect the chord to also go to D, but the chord instead goes to G, making that D of the melody the fifth of the chord instead. I had to pause the song at this part the first time I heard it, close my eyes, and just take it in for a moment. This choice sounded extra warm and cozy and beautiful.
In the "round" section (2:26), the piano player comes in with the melody in the lower octave, but then peels off to the root. Super interesting to my ears.
DELIGHTFUL MOMENT #2: The Unexpected Gmin Chord (2:34). I wasn't expecting that (hence the title). Departures from the norm like this make the ears perk up. Another close-my-eyes moment.
"Across the wide" (2:51) - All of you sang this melody line without harmony, repeating it in unison, then the piano player sings same melody going up to the same octave as the background singers, and THEN all singers split into a nice wide harmony chord (2:55), foreshadowing the excitement of the key change in the next measure. The key change is up a whole step; usually key changes are only a half step, so this feels even more exciting.
DELIGHTFUL MOMENT #3: I spent a LOT of time analyzing and appreciating these amazing chords (3:37). What incredible choices (correct me if I'm wrong in my analysis here): F#7, A7, Am7 (!!), Am6 (!!!), resolving to E. That shift to Am7 was absolutely shiver-inducing, and Am6 is so unusual and so extra tasty. I teared up several times with each realization.
Geoff, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You've made my world a better place.

I played the Patreon preview of this song for my Mom on New Years day, and was surprised when my Dad overheard it playing and started singing along. This song is played in the James Stewart movie Shenandoah, which happens to be one of his favorites. We don't usually see eye to eye on much, but this song gave us something to bond over and really helped me start the year off right with him. We spent a long time talking about this song, and the movie, and then he took me on a tour of the landscaping and creek rerouting he has been doing in my parents 8 acre backyard. One of the big themes I get from this song is love of the land, and listening to this song that day in our yard helped me to see his passion project through his eyes. It also transported me into one of those lovely moments when time stands still and you just feel happy and content. I don't usually get those experiences around my Dad, so this was a precious gift for both of us. (A birthday gift actually, today is my Dad's birthday)

This experience, probably to become one of your most memorable experiences with your father, has moved me to tears. I had a slightly similar experience with my father yesterday. I shared this video on my Facebook page and my stepmother replied that she and my father loved listening to him (Geoff). I can’t begin to tell you how that simple comment floored me. I am 60 years old and have been trying my entire life to get my father to appreciate and “approve” of my musical taste. You don’t know the countless times I have played a song for him hoping to see one ounce of interest in him. My brothers have done the same throughout the years. I wanted him to express admiration for my choices so much and never got it. I’m in tears writing this now. I can’t wait to talk to him today about my last night’s Facebook comment. I’m a little scared too, to be honest. This simple, gorgeous piece of music has already done so much in my eyes. Sarah, hold those memories close and take steps to nurture this seed. Turning points don’t often come our way in life, it seems. We have to make them happen! Happy New Year!!!

Geoff, you've somehow sung a river. The sheer presence of that deep, rolling bass is like standing on the bank and feeling the river flow by. Then you go soaring upward and I can see the sunset reflecting on the water, with the waves like harmonies. Then you sing softly, and it's like water lightly rippling over rocks.
This is the kind of song you can immerse yourself in; close your eyes and let the music wash over you and carry you along to Shenandoah.

Shortly after you started singing I was hooked. This is hauntingly lovely and the solo by the Geoff leaning on the piano sends chills up my spine & brings tears to my eyes every single time I listen which has been every day. As much as I love your bass voice there is something about that higher section that connects to my soul. The video is also amazing - deceptively simple but with such depth. The interactions amongst the Geoff's seriously makes me forget they're not four different people. By the way, my Mom & I both loved your "ode to Kathy" in your intro; very sweet & so true. 😉

The strangest thing is that I've listened to this song several times but never watched the whole vid to the end.
Every single time after a couple of seconds my eyes are getting closed on their own and I just dissolve into the sounds, into the singing, into the air and the vast spaces of Missouri river, where I have never been for real.
The voice is just echoed from the high banks, from the blue water, same cornflower sweater blue, from the dugout canoe bottom and from the crisp blue sky, so airy, so clear and fills all this space like a light fills a glass bottle.
Then Shenandoah himself steps into the boat, sits down calmly and oversees his wide blue expanses while murmuring to the tune with a little approving smile.

Forgive me for a rather long comment..
    Wow, wow,.. WOW.
I did not in any way expect to be instantly swept away and taken to a different place in this way. This one really resonated with me.
Geoff, you astound me. When you were giving us teasers and saying 'let's knock the dust off of this one" I had no idea what to expect. But my man, you didn't just knock the dust off of this one, *I think you recarpeted, refurbished, reupholstered it and gave it completely new life.*
You sing it with such passion in your facial expressions, your body language and every small detail and it also shows in your arrangement of this piece.
I really appreciate the use of your higher range in this, as it is strong, yet delicate combined with your lower range filling out those beautiful harmonies. I can't get enough of this.
The way the music swells and flows with crescendos and decrescendos seems to help paint an auditory image of Shenandoah. The use of call and response worked really well with this. The runs were so beautifully sung, too!
This is the first of your videos where I did not even think or question about how there are supposedly 4 Geoffs present in the room, it truly felt very natural with the glances towards the others. As well as the movements with your hands, so interesting to see how you switch it up.
The background is the perfect 'blank slate' to build on, which you did with soft warm tones and the bright touch of blue and very soft and natural lighting.
The different shots, switching it up in a way that felt natural to which Geoff had the melody, or a particular beautiful part in the harmonies.

It's quite a song. Some say it's originally about a mountain man that fell in love with a Native American princess. Shenandoah is the name of the princess's father. The man wants to meet with the princess and run away together, however Shenandoah moves the entire tribe instead, leaving the man behind with voice to echo alone across the river, or the "Wide Missouri". Others say the story originated with the man being a trader and trading them a bunch of alcohol to get them drunk then sailing away together in the canoe he used for trading, across the "Wide Missouri". With time, it's became a shanty of sorts for sailors with the version by Tennessee Ernie Ford becoming the "definitive" version, I suppose. If you like the song you ought to listen to his version too.

Here's what I like about this. The low bass notes are there because the music asks for them. They're not there just to show off your insane low range. (But please, keep showing it off from time to time - those notes never fail to make me smile!) I also like that baritone Geoff (the one leaning on the piano) got to sing a solo verse. He didn't have to stick to singing background vocals for bass Geoff. He's quite good! ;) And for some reason, I really liked the higher background vocals. They sounded more natural than several of your other Geoff quartets. It's a really nice take on an old standard.

I always wanted to play the piano, and the flute but I was born with severe nerve damage in both ears, I was deemed legally deaf. When I was around 5 my grandparents got me a little toy piano for Christmas and my mom got mad and broke it, she yelled how is she supposed to play that thing if she can't hear. My grandpa told her there are great classical pianists that were deaf, and that since I wear hearing aids, I can hear the music and I can and do feel the vibrations under my feet. So, when I was 9 my grandpa bought me a little Magnus Organ for my birthday, my mom gave it away. My mom was shocked when I was in the 5th grade and managed to sing in the choir and made it until I graduated high school. I love your nice, clear deep bass, 2 of my brothers sang and they were tenors, my youngest brother is more into mechanics than singing lol, I'm the oldest of 5 and my sister doesn't sing either. I don't normally have the courage to write comments, but I can't let my gratitude for this arrangement go unsaid. Shenandoah is a very special song for me as it is the unofficial anthem (not fight song) for my small college alma mater that is tucked away in the Shenandoah mountains. Geoff, you did this song so much justice and plucked hard at the nostalgic bones in me. As a piano player myself it's hard to hear the twang of out of tune notes without cringing, but for this trip down memory lane the sound contributed because there were many pianos scattered around campus and not all of them were in tune. I have missed hearing the college's choir singing this song more than I realized in the 20 years since I graduated. Thank you for taking me back in time to some of the truly best years of my younger life and helping me remember the person I wanted to become while I was there. The Geofftet illusion is deepening. Just watched for the 4th time, and as my ears are settling in my eyes have more space to register. Your choice to make bass Geoff and upper range Geoff co-singers, absolutely and visibly separate, but clearly working together - and to make the other two Geoff's the back-up singers, again, working with each other -- is absolutely brilliant. Each is acquiring an individual identity, and I haven't noticed that happening before. Wonderful theater! (It sort of happened with Misty Mountains, the costumes and behaviors supported it, but except for lead-singer and ultra-bass Geoff on far left, I didn't have a sense of them each having a separate vocal identity. The other two felt part of it, but it was different somehow. Now you've created the same illusion, but more strongly, without the use of costumes and makeup. Maybe it's the way they see each other that makes the difference. I'm in awe.

This is my favorite altered arrangement of Shenandoah that I've heard. Geoff Castellucci keeps the heart and soul of this old song intact while giving it a more modern feel and I just love it. The little vocal shifts and his wonderful soulful voice bring this version home for me.

In all seriousness, lovely rendition of a soulful song.

We needed more of serious song like this with Voiceplay. Like: With or without You by U2.

This rendition compared to Tennessee Ernie’s rendition just blows me away. You’ve already covered my all time favorite Tennessee E. Song 16tons and comparing his rendition of this timeless classic to yours just makes this song so much better. The range is amazing. Keep up this amazing work Geoff. You indeed are doing these older songs amazing justice with your talent.

STOP IT! OMG you're killing me .... in the best way. 😀 How you just slide from upper register to lower and vice versa is astounding. Actually that you have such a beautiful upper register and such a mind blowing low register is crazy. Thank you for blessing us with your tremendous talent! Always a fan!

My younger coworker sent me here and I am so glad he did. Enjoyed the entire performance. Thank you for your time and talents. Interesting cinematography how the piano man gives a nod to the singers to sing. Loved it.

First, let me say that everything about this was amazing. I sang this song in grade school choir, so it has a lot of nostalgia for me. Geoff, you wrapped up so much in this cover: the melancholy, loving heart of the song, the shiver-inducing harmonies, the sense of comfort and nostalgia. It took me back to being a choir kid, finding my identity and a sense of belonging in music. As I got older, music became more high stakes, more about perfection than the love of making music - and life the last few years has taken me away from music making. But hearing you sing makes me remember the joy of it, makes me want to sing again and learn piano just for that joy. Thank you for reminding me.

I used this as my one of my audition song to get into the school of music at my college almost 5 years ago. Today not only am I in my first year as a music educator, but it’s my birthday. This song has a very special place in my heart. Thank you so much for this beautiful gift.
