I am a non brahmin and have learned carnatic music. I chose not to proceed further due to my commitments in my family life. Music was available for me . People need to be introduced. Parents need to encourage children.
My guru says, the world of Carnatic music only has doors that open :) Once if liked, it will be a part of us in some or the other form in our lives, and I hope it does for you too!

We do t say not into our dustbins , with reverence because of the questions good intention. Mode of operation , methods of working is discriminatory and hence not valid . T M Krishna, whenever he talked, never appealed to me. He has some strong opinions about things just like every other human. Nothing more really. Just because he wrote a book, he talks in all kinds of settings - does not make his views right. how should people deal with someone from royal family. Whatever he says may not be of worth, but we do not propagate it, except in British TV or something 😊
The sisters, especially Gayathri always came across as a sharp minded intelligent person. But this one was ballsy! They just didn't mince words. And man, it was dignity glorified! If I were TMK, I'll take a very long time to face anyone who I think has watched this. The comparison between artiste and activist and that no one will support activism was bulls eye! Very beautifully and boldly articulated. Haven't heard any other artiste express their views so openly about TMK as the sisters have done. Not sure they were even asked though! Made my day! I'm very happy! All said, TMK is a very gifted singer and his style of singing and bringing the raga bhavam is unparalleled!
Krishna is no doubt an accomplished singer. But artistes should let their art speak rather than speak themselves! Krishna is a pompous foolish know-all who always 😢 goes overboard blinded by imagined importance of himself.

My opinion of Ranjani and Gayathri was very high before I saw this. Now it has reached heights I never imagined possible! What clarity of thought! What honesty and courage in their speech! Everything they have said in this interview - be it about T M Krishna's silly antics aimed only at seeking publicity, be it about awards, political awareness, or about their very journey in the field of music - each response is a gem. I hope a lot more musicians follow their example. Full marks to the interviewer as well, for asking intelligent questions, without sounding BBC-ish (read nasty and supercilious)!

I guess they are more courageous and honest with a non hypocritical and clear thought. If u really think about it it's so true instead of creating divides u can actually get people in and make things happen rather than just pontificating on others. Mr.TMK knows only to spit on the same plate that has given him such enormous recognition and a living. If he was so worried about brahminical hegemony he should not have received the award citing the causes. So somehow he is okay getting an award yet targeting the practices of the Music academy. So all this goes for a lot of convenience and there is no realism in his ideas or thoughts. And Akkas were right in pointing out this and they never cared whether he got an award or not but it would have been their weakness if they would have supported this hypocrisy. Their stand takes a lot of courage and dignity and somehow they have showcased it effortlessly. Kudos to them
Musical genre is related to sociocultural background. Tamil folk music has select listener group, the same way carnatic music has. There isn’t a lot of cross Pollination between these groups. The door is open both ways but the followers are dictated by their socio cultural backgrounds. Even among, the so called “ Brahmin community “ Carnatic doesn’t have universal appeal, unless there is a culture or heritage of Carnatic music existing within the family. Carnatic will never have universal appeal like film music even if all the so called barriers are removed.

Enjoying or appreciating carnatic music rendered by a musician and its nuances requires certain minimum knowledge about carnatic music. Otherwise you cannot make ABCD out of it. All you will hear is a melodious sound .

Response on TMK query was apt. In last 10 years, TMK keeps raising this issue but his own actual actions in this regard are basically zero - just a lot of talking and putting the blame on "others" and writing articles, coming on TV and getting pubicity. About time someone called him out and it's a shame that more senior artistes in the CM community have kept silent on this. RaGa should be prepared for some nasty, negative feedback and some loud (but content-free) rebuttal from TMK - but the vast majority of CM listeners are solidly behind the sisters - don't back down.

Been a carnatic music lover/listener for 55+ years. Love TMK's for his soulful originality and innovation and RAGA's for their melody and mass appeal. No harm in being an Activist as well as a musician in these days of Engineer/CA/MBA musicians so long as there is no mix up. TMK is a thinker, writer, teacher, who has groomed some excellent young singers and winner of Magsasay. His original genuine grievance was the dominance of Chennai Sabhas' management being by a particular arrogant 'group' who roped in the popular Silk Brand owner for financial convenience. But for TMK's highlighting the recent Kalakhetra issue, it would have been brushed under the carpet. Now that RAGA are 'singing praise' of the so called Leaders that matter today, best wishes to them personally and hopefully for the future of Carnatic Music.🙏
Your views are trite. It's fashionable to target a certain group so as to project oneself as progressive only because it is incapable of violent reaction. This fellow TMK used to hang around Kakakshetra for days on end when Leela Samson was the Director. Let's believe no misconduct was reported from among instructors during that period.
Just as Gayatri Akka says in this video, Krishna wants to project himself a hero and villianise others which is wrong. I was also a fan of Krishna but nowadays, his trends have gone to the trash and he has started doing anything for publicity. I do not like him and I do not listen to his concerts now and my guru has also stopped attending his concerts and listening to his music. Krishna should avoid doing publicity stunts like these. Krishna should learn how to behave from his co artists like Shriramkumar Anna or Arun prakash Anna who have pursued music in its true dignity and faith.

That is something not every musician can do. He will talk about them and get them on stage one day and then it will be a seruppadi for everyone who has put bad comments here.
I am sorry to say this but there are many Carnatic music teachers who have been doing this since a very long time. Shrimathi T Brinda is a great example. Not only that the Bombay sisters sponsored a huge number of students from underprivileged backgrounds for their concerts and learning through mukthambaram trust that they established. I see a lot of instagram posts where many vidwans perform many concerts in the government schools where actually many people have taken up music. So this is what RaGa Akkas are saying that everyone in their own bit are doing a lot for the Carnatic ecosystem to grow. Now for him to even say no one is doing I am the only one doing is definitely a Motherhood statement. It's very easy to say certain statements and villify a community and create divide. If he really wants to bring change he has to do it on his own in his own way and maybe publicise it for the news to reach everywhere so that people in need use it. But instead of that he is doing everything else. It's always good to have great intentions but it's also necessary that u do it in a proper way not like a dictator.
And another thing why should he force everyone to consume classical music. It's not necessary if people have the antenna towards it they will take it up. For the spread of Carnatic music he doesn't have to create divide among people by saying some rusted statements like brahminical hegemony. Secondly he has villified a lot of people who belonged to this art form . Firstly he said classical music isn't sacred, Tyagaraaja didn't speak about Rama, subbalakshmi was forced to be a brahmin and he could make out through expression. It's like he is spitting on the same plate that gave him subsistence for his life. So to spread Carnatic music this is not at all required. I think he has thought that if he does this people from other "backgrounds" will accept, sit and listen to music which is flawed at its own root. So he is just as these sisters rightly put out, seeking sensation much like all politicians to create a lot of divide without actual ground work. And believe me hundred years later too he wouldn't have achieved an inch of change by all this.

I guess they are more courageous and honest with a non hypocritical and clear thought. If u really think about it it's so true instead of creating divides u can actually get people in and make things happen rather than just pontificating on others.

If he was so worried about brahminical hegemony he should not have received the award citing the causes. So somehow he is okay getting an award yet targeting the practices of the Music academy. So all this goes for a lot of convenience and there is no realism in his ideas or thoughts.
And Akkas were right in pointing out this and they never cared whether he got an award or not but it would have been their weakness if they would have supported this hypocrisy. Their stand takes a lot of courage and dignity and somehow they have showcased it effortlessly. Kudos to them

Musical genre is related to sociocultural background. Tamil folk music has select listener group, the same way carnatic music has. There isn’t a lot of cross
Pollination between these groups. The door is open both ways but the followers are dictated by their socio cultural backgrounds. Even among, the so called “ Brahmin community “ Carnatic doesn’t have universal appeal, unless there is a culture or heritage of Carnatic music existing within the family. Carnatic will never have universal appeal like film music even if all the so called barriers are removed.

Enjoying or appreciating carnatic music rendered by a musician and its nuances requires certain minimum knowledge about carnatic music. Otherwise you cannot make ABCD out of it. All you will hear is a melodious sound .
Gayathri begins to speak around 4:12 but closes her mouth, bites her lips and nods her head patiently once she hears THE NAME waiting for him to finish the question! Her mind voice would be like "vaa di vaa!!"
Response on TMK query was apt. In last 10 years, TMK keeps raising this issue but his own actual actions in this regard are basically zero - just a lot of talking and putting the blame on "others" and writing articles, coming on TV and getting pubicity. About time someone called him out and it's a shame that more senior artistes in the CM community have kept silent on this. RaGa should be prepared for some nasty, negative feedback and some loud (but content-free) rebuttal from TMK - but the vast majority of CM listeners are solidly behind the sisters - don't back down.

Been a carnatic music lover/listener for 55+ years. Love TMK's for his soulful originality and innovation and RAGA's for their melody and mass appeal. No harm in being an Activist as well as a musician in these days of Engineer/CA/MBA musicians so long as there is no mix up. TMK is a thinker, writer, teacher, who has groomed some excellent young singers and winner of Magsasay. His original genuine grievance was the dominance of Chennai Sabhas' management being by a particular arrogant 'group' who roped in the popular Silk Brand owner for financial convenience. But for TMK's highlighting the recent Kalakhetra issue, it would have been brushed under the carpet. Now that RAGA are 'singing praise' of the so called Leaders that matter today, best wishes to them personally and hopefully for the future of Carnatic Music.🙏
Your views are trite. It's fashionable to target a certain group so as to project oneself as progressive only because it is incapable of violent reaction. This fellow TMK used to hang around Kakakshetra for days on end when Leela Samson was the Director. Let's believe no misconduct was reported from among instructors during that period.
Just as Gayatri Akka says in this video, Krishna wants to project himself a hero and villianise others which is wrong. I was also a fan of Krishna but nowadays, his trends have gone to the trash and he has started doing anything for publicity. I do not like him and I do not listen to his concerts now and my guru has also stopped attending his concerts and listening to his music. Krishna should avoid doing publicity stunts like these. Krishna should learn how to behave from his co artists like Shriramkumar Anna or Arun prakash Anna who have pursued music in its true dignity and faith.

When u are ready to learn in classical, teachers will be ready when you have enough patience and desires to learn the higher level concept . It's not easy, everything related with maths, Grammer on that, sometimes u feel bore,getting disappointment at one point.. Otherwise you may have the great passion or you may have a strong roots in spirituality and without these above not able to learn carnatic, this message for all including brahmins.. The opinionated arrogance of people like TMKrishna (TMK) is very real & detrimental to safeguarding the underlying divinity of Carnatic music. The R& G sisters are spot on 🎯 However, CLASSICAL music of any genre' ...is NOT FOR SALE. It's not necessary that it has to be aggressively marketed like POP-ular music🤔 Thyagarja, Muthuswami Dikshitar, Swati Thirunal, Annamacharya, Purandaradasar, Sadasiva Brahmendrar...and the likes are all SAINTS with divine vision & creativity🙏

That is something not every musician can do. He will talk about them and get them on stage one day and then it will be a seruppadi for everyone who has put bad comments here.
I am sorry to say this but there are many Carnatic music teachers who have been doing this since a very long time. Shrimathi T Brinda is a great example. Not only that the Bombay sisters sponsored a huge number of students from underprivileged backgrounds for their concerts and learning through mukthambaram trust that they established. I see a lot of instagram posts where many vidwans perform many concerts in the government schools where actually many people have taken up music.
So this is what RaGa Akkas are saying that everyone in their own bit are doing a lot for the Carnatic ecosystem to grow. Now for him to even say no one is doing I am the only one doing is definitely a Motherhood statement. It's very easy to say certain statements and villify a community and create divide. If he really wants to bring change he has to do it on his own in his own way and maybe publicise it for the news to reach everywhere so that people in need use it. But instead of that he is doing everything else. It's always good to have great intentions but it's also necessary that u do it in a proper way not like a dictator.
And another thing why should he force everyone to consume classical music. It's not necessary if people have the antenna towards it they will take it up. For the spread of Carnatic music he doesn't have to create divide among people by saying some rusted statements like brahminical hegemony. Secondly he has villified a lot of people who belonged to this art form . Firstly he said classical music isn't sacred, Tyagaraaja didn't speak about Rama, subbalakshmi was forced to be a brahmin and he could make out through expression. It's like he is spitting on the same plate that gave him subsistence for his life. So to spread Carnatic music this is not at all required. I think he has thought that if he does this people from other "backgrounds" will accept, sit and listen to music which is flawed at its own root. So he is just as these sisters rightly put out, seeking sensation much like all politicians to create a lot of divide without actual ground work. And believe me hundred years later too he wouldn't have achieved an inch of change by all this.
