I think its awesome that you are transparent with the market side. I wish more people would share this so those who take for granted that fresh local meal. Everyone thinks its all sunshine and rainbows to be commercial. They always forget about expenses, market fluctuation, unexpected cost / breakdowns, maintenance of boat / gear. Hopefully you keep this part of the videos going !
Haha for sure! I'm definitely going to keep it going I think a lot of people enjoy the real side of things! definitely not sunshine and rainbows haha!!! really appreciate the feedback and thanks for watching!
That's funny, I use to collect saltwater tropical fish. When we were down at 100ft targeting Cuban Hogs, we caught a Snowy Grouper. It was black with white dots. Guess they lighten up with age, or maybe they get stressed from coming up so fast that the lose a little color. When we brought them up, we'd tie them off at 25ft for 30 to 45 minutes to decompress them a bit. Still had to pop their bladder with a hypo needle but they wouldn't make it without the decompress. Lots of fun in the old days.
@@KeyWestWaterman I dove tropical for 4 yrs and that was the only one I saw caught alive. When working on shrimp boats we would catch a few in 300ft, but they were around 10 inches, not very big. No on sees Cuban Hog fish on top of the reef in 30ft, but I caught 2 in 30ft in a 3 year period. We caught a lot at 100ft. I guess sometimes the fish get lost and show up in unexpected places. We chummed up the water with ground fish in a net bag we tied off to the anchor, and dropped it in 100ft when going down for Cuban Hogs. Then we waited about 30 minutes for the chum to do it's job. We'd go down with a barrier net each to the anchor. There were Cubans everywhere, but we only had 5 minutes to catch them and go back up to the decompression point where we staid, I forget...maybe 15 minutes, this was in the mid 90s. Had a tank in the boat with a long hose and regulator at 20ft in case we ran out of air. But that one time.... I didn't catch it, I was diving with my buyer and he caught it. Never saw a live one before that.
@@KeyWestWaterman wel, I'm 69 yrs old now, I doubt anyone who was doing it when I was would still be in the business now. Old Devon at Reef Relief was giving the tropical fish business Hell after they finished putting mooring buoys on the core reef areas. They always have to have a cause to get people to keep donating them money. So for 6 months she was dogging our fishery. Problem was it was all made up stories/lies. Didn't look like she would stop until she put us out of business. So I wrote an article in Solaris Hill that close the doors of Reef Relief for 3 months. All their funding had dried up over night. Folks can tell which is the truth when they see both sides of the story. When they reorganized and opened the doors back up, they had hired a Marine Biologist, so any cause they had after that was backed up with facts. She never forgave me for doing that, but we were the victims here, we were the ones who were harmed, and she couldn't expect us to go down without a fight. Those were the good old days. 😁
Hey, great vid... Thanks for actually giving us an idea of what the fish brought and how hard it is to make money fishing. I'm sure there are good days and bad days but it's no cake walk. Thanks Sir.
Great video . I use to commercial fish out of Destin back in the 90s then went in the military about to retire and this brings back the wants to do it again 🤙🏼
Key West Waterman yeah man way different . The fishery was abundant then .. I miss it . I like how you go out and make enough to cover the trip and put in some play money . I might have to give that a try . Solid work 🤙🏼
Also, we used two inch rebar cut into measured sections with one end wrapped in wire to form an attachment point, put them in a five gallon bucket to not stain the boat. Sure cheaper than breaking off lead!

Hey man, love the vids. Keep up the hard work. Like the simplicity of the videos. Also this might sound a bit weird, but it nice to find a channel that’s a normal dude who’s not faking emotions and what not just to try to add fake hype. Anyways, stay laid back.
Really really appreciate that! Doesn't sound weird at all thats exactly what im going for. Trying to be real and show the real side of my world. Thanks for sharing that thought and hope you like the vids and hang around!
Great Video! Did the commercial thing myself for a while, its a tuff gig. Alot of days it cost you money, seems everyone only sees the big check. Keep up the good work, and load the boat!
yea its really hard work! a lot of days we lose money but I suppose it all comes out in the wash or I wouldn't still be here! truly love every minute of it though! thanks for sharing and checking out the vids!

Enjoy these commercial videos. Bout to leave the tugboat industry and get back to fishing, commercially this time, not charters. Your videos get me amped about making that switch!
main reason I don't share that is because a lot of fish houses are competitive with their prices. out of respect for them I try not to share exact details. although some days I have one species so its easy to do the math and tell! but I appreciate the feedback!
I really enjoy your commercial fishing videos. Especially the money breakdown. Just wish you would do more.. Fishing not diveing. Just because I'm to old to dive anymore.
Yes Captain... here in Bronx,New York checking out ur vlog. in Port Royal, Jamaica that's what I do... i fish deep lines. 400 to 600 feet of water. Yes I enjoyed it! I also fish for Yellow Tail Snapper at night. I fish for a living! I haven't been to Cay West before! Would love to pay A visit before I go back to Jamaica next year! God bless u! Decades ago when I was commercial like this in Guam, we were anchoring in 600’ high spots and fishing current swings. Are you anchoring or drifting here? I worked two Miya-Epochs with 5 hooks and a chum bag on the swivel. Often put a hidden hook inside the chum bag as the bigger grouper and snapper would just shred the bag! Only issues I had were floaters drifting away and getting the anchor stuck and having the breakaway not break away!
Hello, key nowadays in MAURITIUS we are lockdown not able to fishing .now only the fishers men who have professionals licence can go fishing the others like me basta .supposing they will open on the 1 of may l dought .we lost all the season for red snapper, which starts from March to end of September .l am very very frustrated .Good that you are here to give me some hope THANKS.
Really enjoy watching your videos! Keep up the great content! Possibly do a rundown on the deep-drop gear? I've caught a few snowys off Saint Augustine in the past, ( hand reels), more work than fun, but GREAT eating.
I would love if you would tell us exactly what reel you use for deep dropping, the pound test braid, and the leader pound test. I really love your shows! I just started watching and you are very informative!
Did I hear 600 feet deep? I loved to go out for grouper here in NC. A charter Capt. I came to know and who owned a bait and tackle shop that he ran on non fishing days. I'd stop when he was there and buy a little something and talk with him. One day I said to him we wanted to catch grouper but so far had only caught small barely legal fish or throw backs and could he help us get on some decent grouper. He walked over where he kept his grease charts on the wall removing one and asked me where we had tried to catch them. I told him a couple of spots we fished and he showed me those spots on his map then marked an area he said was another 15 or so miles farther out. Total distance from inlet , ...36 miles. We first went to the area he showed me and it was a large area of high relief coral bottom and we pulled dead baits behind skirts so we could fast troll for anything while we kept eyes glued on depth.sounder set to zoom in and show the bottom and the ledges we were looking for. In just that first trip we located and marked several promising ledges. It took a few trips to learn the best way of pulling fish from their home and up 100 feet to the boat. After a few trips with only small grouper in the box and many should have seen us fighting the ones that got away I took our rod and reels to a tackle shop and had them fitted with motors and 200 lb braid. In time we had learned to use whole menhaden.for bait because as soon as reaching the bottom and engaging reel we would get constant rat a tat bites I called them from baby black bass or grunts. I learned quickly you have to have a big enough bait to endure those small fish that would get the attention of grouper that would come to check out what was attracting the little guys. The machine gun bites of those small fish would suddenly stop and we knew they had cleaned the 9/0 circle hooks we used or they stopped biting because a big grouper was moving in an they'd give em room. A grouper bite can take the rod outa your hand if you aren t holding tight and we'd let the rod touch the water before engaging motor letting those circle hooks set themselves like they are designed too. Our problem in past trips was once hooked it was easy for a big gag or red to strip the drag allowing them to cut the 200 lb braid like sewing thread leaving that fish to swim around with hook and dragging a 16 ounce weight around effectively killing the bite for some time. By using motors we could get them up high enough when theegdy realized their mistake they couldn't get back down into coral to get free. I'd tighten drag with pliers as far as possible before bending drag legs. If you tried to pull line from reels by hand the line would cut into your hand before slipping from drag. Those big gags and especially the reds would stall motors , slip drag but stop short of getting home and we d get them up again even higher pulling with all we had slowly gaining each run finally getting them to the pressure change that effectively stunned them and they were ours. We still hooked fish we couldn't get off the bottom however we did bring in gags over 30 lbs and reds up half that. Red grouper pull twice as much as any other we found. We caught gags , reds ,scamp as well as trigger fish. Snapper and occasionally 4- 5 lb black bass. We d hook occasionally sharks and Amberjack that would destroy leaders and pull you to your knees with drag locked down. I got spoiled from eating fresh grouper, to me the finest tasting fish in the sea. N C started limiting the amount we could keel untill it no longer was feasible to make the over 70 mile round trip and we eventually stopped going out and I sold my ride after years of going offshore. It was when we could justify going one Hell of a ride and fight when we got there and hooked up.
Hello KEY in MAURITIUS our bait is fresh bonito they love it, but l never try small squid it very difficult to have the smaller one. THANK AGAIN for the video very interesting.
Awesome stuff!! Just subd!! Love the commercial breakdown!! Would love to learn more about the industry... I'm a Junior in high school and am interested in commercial fishing!
Thanks for the sub! and glad you like the vids! trying to be entertaining and educational as possible! commercial fishing is a very tough business but can be very rewarding!
Hey loved the video and subscribed already. I’m moving down to marathon with the wife and kids. Interested in getting my spl and rs down there. Need to learn the waters. I have a ew buddies down there but nobody does the commercial thing I know already. It would be awesome to get some info from you if you would be willing. No spots or anything hahaha. Just permits and license stuff. Also ins and outs of the markets. Thanks.
its all the same rs spl and south Atlantic permits you need for the rest of the east coast. not sure where you're coming from! I do such a little amount of commercial I wouldn't be much help to be honest! lol
What’s the most current use deep drop in? Went out of port canveral last weekend and current was 3.4-3.7kts. Using 6 lbs couldn’t get it down there very well. Any suggestions
that's smoking!! I try not to drop in more than 2 knots or so to be honest. but also depends on what kind of bottom I'm in, rocky bottom is a no no for me with strong currents lol mud isn't so bad. not much you can do, more weight to hold up and down and just being careful, manage the rod closely, never lay her down in a strong current.
Aaron, tried calling. Hoping to book a multi day trip to dive (bugs and whatever else, deep drop, and fish swords. If you get time check your VM I’d like your input on time of year before I book dates and touch base with you.
my phone for some reason shows me voicemails a few days late! it doesn't say I have anything right now not sure what's up with it! shoot me a text I can give you a ring tomorrow!
I have multiple reels usually use 65 lb test. rods vary as well. I have several. lots of options that all work. I have other deep drop videos where I go over there reels and rods.
@@KeyWestWaterman thanks for the reply I plan to Target primarily tilefish and snowy grouper. Not interested in swordfish. Would not expect to catch anything over a hundred pounds I'd like to keep the price under a thousand
Doug Squatch thanks! In this vid I’m using a beastmaster by shimano with a custom made rod. I make all my own rigs, normally always fish squid but i do mix it up from time to time! I’m going to make a more in depth deep drop vid, everyone seems to have lots of questions about this one!
I honestly can't remember how far I was this day, we have so many different areas to fish its anywhere from 10 to 60 miles! and the reel I was using this day is a Shimano beast master!
How are those tanacoms working for you? What size and setup? My friends been thinking about getting some for deep dropping and for some older friends to use fishing normal depths.
Wes Lovelace i wouldn’t say i have an average no. Down here all it all depends on conditions and current mainly. On average I’m dropping between 550-950!
The profit breakdown is cool, especially to us that don’t participate in that world 👍👍👍👍

It was when we could justify going one Hell of a ride and fight when we got there and hooked up.
yup! 600 ft

I do such a little amount of commercial I wouldn't be much help to be honest! lol
Awesome vid capt! What size leader do you use on your snowy rigs ?
normally 300!
Looks Greg's boat in the back Yankee capt
haha yup!
cool man I been going with Greg for 20years that's funny guess I'll see you around lol
Awesome video. What degree rod holder do you use for deep dropping ?
Gio S in this vid I’m fishing a 0° but sometimes i fish my 30° with a swivel.
Thanks !
What kind of rod and reel set up are you using? Specs?
caicos kid it’s actually a custom made rod that belongs to a good friend of mine! The reel is a beast master by shimano!
caicos kid i will look at the rods class when i get a sec and get back to you!
Thanks for the response. Keep the videos coming
Product for the Liberian fish market
haha!
At 6:24 and 12:24 what is that baloon like thing in their mouthes ?

@@KeyWestWaterman Interesting. Thx for the reply on a year old video, I appreciate the attention.
Let me get those numbers lol 😆
lol there isn't anything left there!
What size electric fishing reel and test pound you using and the the fishing rod
I have multiple reels usually use 65 lb test. rods vary as well. I have several. lots of options that all work. I have other deep drop videos where I go over there reels and rods.
Looking to replace 40 year old eletramate what reel do you recommend.
All depends one what all you're targeting and your budget! id be happy to share my opinion if you give me a little bit more info!
@@KeyWestWaterman thanks for the reply I plan to Target primarily tilefish and snowy grouper. Not interested in swordfish. Would not expect to catch anything over a hundred pounds I'd like to keep the price under a thousand
Cool video . What gear ,rigs and bait you using? Keep them coming
Doug Squatch thanks! In this vid I’m using a beastmaster by shimano with a custom made rod. I make all my own rigs, normally always fish squid but i do mix it up from time to time! I’m going to make a more in depth deep drop vid, everyone seems to have lots of questions about this one!
how far out did you have to go and what is that auto reel you have
I honestly can't remember how far I was this day, we have so many different areas to fish its anywhere from 10 to 60 miles! and the reel I was using this day is a Shimano beast master!
Bullshit you would have remember that before you remembered if you wiped your ass that morning
Lmao I fish/dive about 20 days a month, this was 3 months ago. I literally have no idea where I fished this day!
Great video! What kind of boat are you running?
27 contender! gonna do a walkthrough soon!
To bad we can't do that in California
that is a bummer! its a good time!
i love channel Good interaction, my friend
Glad you enjoy it! thanks for tuning in!
How are those tanacoms working for you? What size and setup? My friends been thinking about getting some for deep dropping and for some older friends to use fishing normal depths.
Tyler i wouldn’t say its better or worse, just different. But incredible, very similar to yellow edge. And I’m using a beast master currently!
great video. what reel r u using ?
Shimano beast master mainly! sometimes I fish with my Lindgren Pittman
What kind of reel and rod were you using?
Shimano beast master, and a custom made rod from a friend in South Carolina!
Thank you keep up the good work
Do you have an average depth that you drop or are certain species depth or structure oriented!!
Wes Lovelace i wouldn’t say i have an average no. Down here all it all depends on conditions and current mainly. On average I’m dropping between 550-950!
