I've owned my berkey for about 5 year's now. It keeps passing the red dye test. Not once have I had to change my filters. I don't have extremely hard water, but the water i do have will turn my shower curtain slightly orange. Love my Berkey.

Great advice. I would add one tid-bit. I now hold the flat end of the filter against something firm and push down on the end air is going in while blowing it out. That is, after I blew the end off of a filter once. Much love 👍🏻

I have had to do some electrical work in an old water treatment plant. It was no longer in use but just stand there and look around. I took a tour in 1976 of a water treatment plant. The demonstration: An employee took a clear bottle and dipped it in the FILTHY black water tank. He put a few drops of "something" in the bottle and instantly turned CLEAR!!!

We've been using Berkey since 2004 and we love it.
Instructions say to scrub the candles but it wears them out especially the closer to the bottom you go, that's because the bottom filters more water.
If someone could make the candles so that you could flip them upside down they would last twice as long.

Thanks so much for demonstrating the compressed air cleaning method. Im so annoyed at how little info there is about that. I live off of well water and had my filters for less than 2 years, and they've stopped filtering the top chamber to about 1/3 of the water remaining. And they've slowed down a lot. I scrubbed them real hard one time and it improved the filtering slightly, but only for about another week. Will definitely try the compressed air method next time I clean them!
All the info I keep reading is from people filtering tap water, and it's frustrating that berkey themselves don't provide extra information for people who use their filters in slightly more rural situations, especially since filtering all kinds of water is a huge feature of their filters

Seems like a slick method to clean the filter. We used to have a berkey and always had this problem.. At some point I suppose the activated charcoal would loose its power to absorb chemical toxins. Because of the cost of these filters, I did lots of experimentation with making your own activated carbon by using hot salt water. Certainly not as potent as store brought activated carbon, but it would turn tea into clear water within a day. All very interesting.

Just keep in mind, not to use too much air psi, since the one end is just glued on and I have seen them split. I just changed out a set of filters after 8 or so years. The old filters were filtering slow, even after a good cleaning. Possibly calcium build up, not sure.

Well, I live in the country and there are military grade looking HUGE tanks that every fall they dump MILLIONS of gallons of SOMETHING HORRIBLE smelling on that land. The trucks keep coming for a week straight one after the other and ride and dump as they go. On a small field!!! NO ONE is going to tell me it is manure. I KNOW what manure smells like. Pig, cow etc. This is BREATH STOPPING STENCH and all that shit goes into our WELLS. Like the saying goes....They poison the wells.
