Note: The reason I say Gutterburn is "the next-to-last deck we'll talk about" even though it's the last deck on the list is because I cut the part where I talk about Turbo Fog. It's a good deck, and will likely be a factor in stadard, but I decided nobody wants to hear about Turbo Fog, so I cut the bit. Was this the right decision?
I’m willing to hear you talk about any deck. Except Guilds Standard Turbo-Fog. Make it its own video, because we’ll need to know about how it works and what will do well against it, but I’m glad you cut it from here.
I wanted to say that you are probably my favorite person to watch when it comes to not only tcg's, but when it comes to youtube in general. I leave every video not only feeling satisfied by learning more about the game (decks, card choice, land ratios, meta, etc) but also leaving feeling happy just by the way you present everything (not to mention your cat is life itself). Keep it up man, please. It's truly amazing stuff. As soon as my paychecks start rolling in, I will be sure to donate a little a month to keep you going. Peace and love, my guy
I love you Dev. You’re my dude, man! Didn’t think I’d ever want to patreon anyone, but when I’m hanging out to see your videos every week, I realise it’s my job to renumerate you for the amazing service you provide. Thank you man
Love what you do Dev, you're the first youtuber to convince me to head over and support you on patreon. Thanks for helping me get excited about Standard again!
Congrats on 100,000!!! Beem a subscriber for years, love your chatty, homely just-hangin-out vibe. You deserve the success. Can't wait to start voting on these decks.
I also learned something cool I didn't know before today. If you have an Underrealm Lich out it's impossible to deck yourself. "Choosing" a card from the three is an alternative to drawing. So you don't "draw" a card, you "choose" a card. Pretty cool, looking forward to brewing with that card.
Replacement effects are real, and don't come up very often so it's a strange thing to think about. But it's nice that if you have an Underrealm Lich out you don't have to count your library to make sure he's not going to kill you.
Yeah I lost a game due to this. I had my opponent down to 3 life and he technically ran out of cards to draw but that broken lich was out and he eventually killed me.
That is why I am glad they didn't go with a mill strategy for Dimir this time around. They pushed out a bunch of mill cards like Psychic Corrosion, but then put a bunch of good cards that make the strategy literally impossible to win with.
DEV!!! I was so excited to log in today and see that you hit 100k. Good for you man! You are my ONLY source for standard deck techs. I trust no one else. Keep up the good work!
100k hell yeah dev!!! Been watching your stuff for a long time and always enjoy your stuff. It’s so nice to see a positive person like you making a impact on the community. Much love I’ll keep watching
I think people are sleeping on Vampires. When the next set rolls around and we get new orzhov and azorius cards, I thinking of brewing a spicy Esper Vampires list.
I would definitely try her out, I love Etrata. She was my prerelease promo. I think being an extra sudo-exile spell for the deck is helpful, and Forerunner of the Legion being able to fetch her back from the library is pretty good. Problem is, the four-drop space in the deck is looking pretty packed. Vampires wants to play a set of Sanctum Seekers for sure, maybe even Twilight Prophet (not to mention, if I go blue, Nightveil Predator is a pretty OP vampire, also 4 mana.)
I've been playing around with some ideas for a vampire deck lately, and it does seem like it has a bit of potential. I think when we get the rest of the guilds is when it will really take off though. Just going with a blue-black vamp deck right now does seem pretty good. Another one that looks like it might have potential that people aren't talking about is pirates. We didn't get any new ones, but we got some good cards that could help support the deck. Also, people seem to have forgotten that Pillar of Origins even exists, and as a 2 cost ramp/fixing card, would fit right in with all of these multicolored tribal decks and still leave open the 3-drop slot. And we don't have to worry about Abrade anymore, so it is definitely viable now.
Been having a ton of fun playing a Grixis variant of the Desecrated Tomb deck that you deck teched a while back. Very good cards for that deck in this set too.
Dev I love your brain man!!! The two decks I decided from spoilers that I wanted to build are hyped up on your list here: Turbo Surveil/Lazav/Etrata Deck and Selesnya Tokens My Surveil/Lazav/Etrata deck has been the bane of the LGS's events thus far and driving all the Golgari and Boros players mad :D. My Selesnya deck abuses Trostani, Legion's Landing, and Emmara for some turn 4/5 Alpha Strike shenanigans. I can't wait to finish it in time for this week's FNM. Just waiting on your deck techs now to see if I'm on the right track.
i got a prerelease foil Niv-Mizzet then i opened a foil Niv-mizzet, those 2 helped me win my whole prerelease undefeated. Oh and i got some nice trades with them too, Shock lands boys.
My mate had been taking the piss about the fact that he was going to get a foil Assasins trophy because he was lucky and all that. then wen we opened our pre-release packs without looking at his rare he just claimed foil assassins trophy (taking the piss as he still didnt know what his rare actually was), he then turned it over and it was a foil assasins trophy and we all just lost it. my frind did the eact same thing with karn in dominaria draft, claimed a booster was going to be a karn before seeing the rare and was right.
Love the video dev! Can't wait to get into surveil this set. Just got playsets of lazav and Etrata so definitely looking to make some form of dimir value deck
I've been playing around with a mono red runaway steam-kin deck that seems interesting so far. It uses steam-kin, skirk prospector, wily goblin, and other red "ramp" cards to get a fast kicked Fight with Fire or Banefire to win. Also runs Jaya for some more ramp. The most interesting part is using Experimental Frenzy to keep getting a bunch of cards in play with all the ramp and treasure tokens. Another interesting thing with experimental frenzy is the ability to loot with something like Dismissive Pyromancer. Keep playing spells until you hit a land on top, then loot away the land with the unplayable cards in your hand, then go back to casting more spells. It has been very interesting so far, and fun. Also, for the Selesnya tokens deck, I got both March of the Multitudes and Venerated Loxodon in my pool at prerelease (which was awkward seeing as I picked Dimir, but all my other rares were terrible), and both of those cards did wonders. Especially March, which several times turned a certain loss into a win by getting 8 or 9 lifelink soldiers. I think it will be quite good in standard.
I’m actually building a lazov deck. I Think it it’s going to do well. Can’t wait to see your deck. Since I’ll be using a lot of surival I’m taking the bugs as some drops.
This is strange, but i noticed when you say a ward with an predominate "i" your cats ear twitch... I thought it was funny. My cat always responded to the word "beer". Good video brother! Keep up the good work my man!
Not full tested this deck but another way to finish izzet couterburn is with omnispell adapt and apex of power. Use the tap of the adapt and then cast apex for 3 mana and gain 10 mana to then just start thorwing burn spells at people. A great finisher for this combo is to have Erratic Cyclops on board when you do the adapt of power so you get a 10/8 with trample minimum. Testing it on mtg arean and it seems pretty decent/just fun tbh.
I used Legion Warboss in my Jeskai and Izzet builds in Prerelease to great effect with Passwall Adept. It definitely works as a threat in control builds.
I've been having a lot of fun with Grixis Dragons, been playing it for the past few days. Dragon Egg is actually pretty amazing for the deck, as it combos well with Dragon Hoard and Spit Flame.
I have been brewing a Izzet wizzard list and I feel it has a lot going for it, even though it loses Soul-scar mage it gains Siren Stormtamer to protect the best card in the deck Naban, Dean of Iteration, going him turn 2 into turn 3 Exclusion mage has been able to put a lot of agro/midrange deck on the back foot.
I’ve been playing Izzet Counterburn on Arena and found that Niv-Mizzet is actually a really strong finisher vs control (and sometimes vs midrange) not just because he can’t be countered, but fighting over removing him winds up giving you a lot of extra cards and damage that brings you closer to a winning Banefire. Plus it turns out he’s not that hard to cast despite the mana cost, especially if you’re waiting to cast him with counterspell backup.
Engine-style Dimir Reanimator: use Connive // Concoct and Whisper, Blood Liturgist to gravejuggle stuff like Lotleth Giant, Doom Whisperer and Chupacabras. Diregraf Ghouls and Doomed Dissenters as early drops and sacrificial fodder. Especially Reassembling Skeletons can be utilized a lot for chump blocking all to eternity and sacrificed for more valuable creatures. Still figuring more ways to protect the engine, but when it sets off, it's hard to stop.
My Mono-Red Goblins deck (which started as your $10 budget build in Dominaria Standard) has been a lot of fun to play, and I've been picking up pieces to tweak/improve it as time went on. I'm interested in seeing how easily it could be shifted into your new Goblins deck or the Gutterburn deck. I should probably just pick up some Guttersnipes and Electrostatic Fields now, and I'll probably have just about all of the pieces I'll need.
Dev, two decks I'm looking forward to playing are counterburn (with guttersnipe) and g/w midrange (Deathgorge scavenger is going to do some heavy lifting now that undergrowth and surveil are around). My sleeper deck is Grixis Mirari Conjecture. I'm really looking forward to ultimating a conjecture with a thousand year storm in play.
I actually think there is room for an Esper Midrange deck too. Surveil is always good, and white has some great removal on top of black. I really expect Esper Midrange to be a tier 2 or off-deck to surprise people settling on the expected Golgari and Selesnya decks. And it needs to be said that such a deck could become the premier deck of the entire format as it'll be good...but it'll be getting Orzhov and Azorius in the following set...both of which have a long history of getting great cards.
Rn I'm excited to ramp up my Izzet Wizards Tribal commander deck with since I pulled Tal, Niz, and a handful of solid UR spells and wizards from a GoR booster box this weekend.
Ive been theory crafting some jank and i saw a shell for sultai walls. Run 4 of each of the 1 mana defenders in blue black and green, then run a dimir control shell with green for ramp and fixing as well as some surveil synergies cause of our blue wall
Regarding an undergrowth-focused deck, how worth would it be to include some explore cards? The synergy between surveil and undergrowth has been stated, and wouldn’t explore be strictly better than surveil in this case? Of course the problem would be which explore cards are good enough to warrant a spot in the deck over other choices, but what do you guys think?
Wanted to add that if card text refers to "a card NAMED.." then Lazav doesn't change that part. For example: if you Lazav'd a Mirror-Mad Phantasm and activated, you'd shuffle Lazav in and then mill until you reach a card with the exact name Mirror-Mad Phantasm (or mill out)
I played against Gutterburn earlier today on Arena, and I almost lost, except for the fact that I was playing the one deck archetype that is always ignored, never seen on Arena, utilizing one of the strongest, if not most underrated, Planeswalker that survived rotation. Yeah, I'm talking about Rakdos Pirates.
I always wondered why nobody ever mentioned Sky Terror when talking about Boros. Flying is already good evasion, but having menace as well will make it nearly unblockable for most decks.
Just got back from pre-release, went 3 - 1. Disinformation Campaign is the shiz, it was instrumental in my wins. In the later turns, 5+, it was soo busted. Being able to play it and recur it in the same turn is strong as hell. Dimir's looking pretty good so far, perhaps stretching it out to include red for some Grixis control. There's a ton of great cards for a Grixis deck at the moment.
Would love to see a budget Surveil list from you, Dev; it would allow me to play what I want without breaking the bank, and you’re probably a better Standard Brewer than I am, since I rarely play it.
I would love to see an Izzet Counter-Burn deck, either budget or not. It has been my favourite strategy for as long as I have been playing the game, and I would love to see your take on it
Yo Dev, For the jeskai control deck you can run ionize as your "cancel" spell. It's easier on the mana than sinister sabotage and allows you to become a burn deck against control. Idk if its the best I'm still messing with the deck but with 4x lightning strike, 3x shock, and 4x ionize it's enough to be psuedo-burn.
In regards to boros aggro. I think ppl are thinking about mentor wrong. I think what one wants to do is go semi wide. Using hazad and legion warboss to poop out tokens then use mentor to make those tokens 2 2/2s. Think about. Turn one cast hazad turn two cast boros challenger attack with hazad on turn 3 cast legion warboss. Then warboss creates a token thus, hazads trigger can trigger. You attack with the goblin token, the challenger, and hazad. Use the challengers mentor ability to turn hazad into a 2/2. Then u have two token hazad and the boss
Jeskai is where I'm at and it's been insane so far. Definitely feel like it has more power than straight UW and the mana is totally fine if you construct your deck with a bit of discipline.
Im working on a weird golgari deck. It plays defenders early then after a midnight reaper to sacrifice the defenders to draw cards and then use different undergrowth triggers to get big creatures and swing for damage. Also cracked a vraska which is great
For jeskai contol Sinister sabatoge is not the counter you want to play. Sure some people will sware by it but jeskai control is teferi contol in a red shell. What does red do that teferi cant do? It can reduce your life total to 0 without needing to have a single creature in a deck. Rather than run any sinister sabatoge 4 instead move into a 4ionize build, and focus your mana base on being able to cast settle(even with clarion settle is still needed in this deck) then have a couple shocks a strike or 2. 2 copies of expansion/explosion and one banefire and bam you have incidentally have a teferi contol deck that only has to devote a single slot to actually killing you(1 banefire) And that's still even removal! everything else in the deck that does damage incidentally does things that you want it to do ionize counters spells, expansion is a versatile card that draws cards late game AND you can use teferi to generate to extra for the X in your end step. Top it off with a couple mission briefing for flashback on ionize or even banefire and well.. you have in my opinion the best way to play teferi in a control deck no creatures and simply wins by the game dragging on. Oh also you run 2 nexus in the mainboard in place of gearhulks(wizards crazy if they think well play dream eater, even if hes good I just wont on the principle of my finisher dies to lighting strike? Lmao nooowayyy) also you multiple goblin electromancer(3-4) and 2 more nexus in the board and you literally can't lose the mirror
You were very, very, very right.
I’m willing to hear you talk about any deck.
Except Guilds Standard Turbo-Fog. Make it its own video, because we’ll need to know about how it works and what will do well against it, but I’m glad you cut it from here.
Yes, it was.
Helps to know strengths/weaknesses of it if it becomes prevalent
Best choice!
Congrats on the 100,000 subs!
Ya. Good job getting 0.1 million subscribers.
+1 from me!
this comment needs a pin!
well deserved
You just know the video gonna be good when Ziggy is there in the opening shot

Thanks man! Glad I could provide a valuable service!
Love what you do Dev, you're the first youtuber to convince me to head over and support you on patreon. Thanks for helping me get excited about Standard again!
100,000 subs for Dev! Get this guys his 100k play button. He's freakin' earned it

100k subs! That’s awesome. Congrats Dev. This is the mtg channel that I recommend to folks. Keep up the great work.
Your had put a lot of work in these videos, the past week, I apreciate it.
100k hell yeah dev!!! Been watching your stuff for a long time and always enjoy your stuff. It’s so nice to see a positive person like you making a impact on the community. Much love I’ll keep watching
100k congrats Dev! You've worked hard for this! Keep up the awesomeness!
Yay 100k. U deserve it mate. Been watching since battle for Zen standard.
Congrats on the 100,000 mark Dev, you deserve it!
Gratz on 100k, you've had my attention since day one of me playing magic back in BFZ.
Congrats on 100k dev. Remember I subbed at 15 and we've come a long way. Keep up the good work.
Congrats on 100,00! My favorite mtg channel
Congrats on the 100K Dev. Can't wait to see the RU CounterBurn deck, remember playing it late 90's.
You hit 100k!! Congrats, man. You deserve it!
Another good selection of decks Dev. Can't wait to see the grid is dragon's build. Don't forget chromatic lantern to go with dragon's hoard.
I cannot fathom any thumbs down. You have been a huge source of information for me...SLBK!
As a lot of people have mentioned, congrats on finally 100k subscribers! Looking froward to this upcoming Standard
CONGRATULATIONS ON 100K SUBS DEV!!!!! We love you!!! (I just checked and it said 100,002 subs!!)
I think people are sleeping on Vampires. When the next set rolls around and we get new orzhov and azorius cards, I thinking of brewing a spicy Esper Vampires list.

I think it was definitely the right decision
Congratulations on the 100k subs! Your wizards are very proud.
Been having a ton of fun playing a Grixis variant of the Desecrated Tomb deck that you deck teched a while back. Very good cards for that deck in this set too.
Dev I love your brain man!!!
The two decks I decided from spoilers that I wanted to build are hyped up on your list here:
Turbo Surveil/Lazav/Etrata Deck and Selesnya Tokens
My Surveil/Lazav/Etrata deck has been the bane of the LGS's events thus far and driving all the Golgari and Boros players mad :D.
My Selesnya deck abuses Trostani, Legion's Landing, and Emmara for some turn 4/5 Alpha Strike shenanigans. I can't wait to finish it in time for this week's FNM.
Just waiting on your deck techs now to see if I'm on the right track.
*Opened a prerelease foil assassin’s trophy and a normal assassin’s trophy at prerelease. Got some luck*
i got a prerelease foil Niv-Mizzet then i opened a foil Niv-mizzet, those 2 helped me win my whole prerelease undefeated. Oh and i got some nice trades with them too, Shock lands boys.
Same here lol
Sell them quick. They won't stay high.
em3sis sold my pre release for $60.
I was your 100,000th subscriber... 👀 CONGRATULATIONS!!
THANK YOU FRIEND!
WELCOME
funnily enough, that was not the case ;)
Never clicked on a video so quickly.
totally!
Love the video dev! Can't wait to get into surveil this set. Just got playsets of lazav and Etrata so definitely looking to make some form of dimir value deck
Very nice ideas. Congratulations on 100,000 subs. Way to go. Always love your content.
Congrats Dev on your 100k subs!!! We all LOVE you brother! Keep the best videos coming.

Boom! 100K. Congrats dev! You deserve it, keep up the good work.
The best MTG channel IMO just went 100k subs, congrats Wizard.
As a controll player converted to the ways of pass....counterBURNNN you, im super stoked for izzet spells! Congrats on 100k been here since khans!
100K Subs man!!! Big Time You Tuber now!! Congratz! You deserve it man!
Izzet Wizards is the deck I just built. A lot of fun to play, with fun interactions and enough tricks and aggro to play around with.
Congrats on 100k subs! Some sweet decks here dude, its gonna be a sick time in Standard for a good bit I think.
I love how Jump Start burn cards fit into Flame of Keld decks. I may even try building a Gutterburn deck and I barely play standard.
I’m actually building a lazov deck. I
Think it it’s going to do well.
Keep up the good work my man!
gratz on a 100 k!!!! love your videos keep it up!!! ive been here since u had 20k and i will continue to be here till the day i die :)

15 away from 100,000!!!
14 now...
8 now!
100,000 subs play button incoming for dev :D
FINALLY! Got that Crit, Dev! Mad Props, Brother!
I've been having a lot of fun with Grixis Dragons, been playing it for the past few days.
Dragon Egg is actually pretty amazing for the deck, as it combos well with Dragon Hoard and Spit Flame.
Whoooo!! 100,000 subs. congrats Dev
Rotation is going to be great. Can't wait for deck tech season. You rock Dev. Can't wait to see tokens and counter burn!

I never was interested in standard up until arena. Awesome content
WOOOOO!!! 100K CONGRATULATIONS DEV!

Great vid as usual dev! Congrats on reaching 100k!

I've been playing Sultai Midrange since Dominaria, I'm so excited for the new Ravnica pieces
Channel is lookin good
Ziggy: 'Yeah - he's putting up the cameras and stuff - I'm gona get some love'
Congrats on 100k subs! Keep up the good work!
Scored an assassin's trophy at present release in my dimir themed box. Pretty cool.
i opened a vraska at prerelease. golgari sacrifice all the way!
My promo was an assassins trophy!
my boy that's a cool 80 bucks.
i opened a vraska two times in an izzet guild kit in the boosters that were besides the seeded boosters
GloomyJoeyGaming sell to that ASAP to all the suckers paying 80 for a rare
@@Zerschnitzler77 I only opened one in my izzet pack :(
For sure want to see the counterburn deck tech. There’s not a standard format that I’ve played where I haven’t tried to force budget ur spells in
You made it 100k subs. Congrats Dev.
Can't wait for deck techs
Electrostatic Field is so, so underrated.
Everyone forgetting the good old Sky Terror for Boros. A 2/2 flyer with menace that grows is nothing to sneeze at.
Grows?
I assume from mentor triggers.
Exactly.
oh yeah i thought about that bad boy and also went right to my mono white knights deck. swiftblade vindicator is going win stuff!!!
I always wondered why nobody ever mentioned Sky Terror when talking about Boros. Flying is already good evasion, but having menace as well will make it nearly unblockable for most decks.
8 more subs early congrats bro been here since like 40k subs and all I can say is thank you dev
Around 5:40, the cat looks into the camera as if to say, "You better play, Boros Aggro... or else!" lol
Surprised Doom Whisperer wasnt mentioned at all..
Does ixlian's mechanic explore get better post rotation feels like the green black explore cards synergize better with ravnica new under growth cards?
Would love to see a budget Surveil list from you, Dev; it would allow me to play what I want without breaking the bank, and you’re probably a better Standard Brewer than I am, since I rarely play it.
I would love to see an Izzet Counter-Burn deck, either budget or not. It has been my favourite strategy for as long as I have been playing the game, and I would love to see your take on it
Yo Dev,
For the jeskai control deck you can run ionize as your "cancel" spell. It's easier on the mana than sinister sabotage and allows you to become a burn deck against control. Idk if its the best I'm still messing with the deck but with 4x lightning strike, 3x shock, and 4x ionize it's enough to be psuedo-burn.
congrats on 100,000!!!
Congrats on your 100K subscribers dev!
im excited for:
-golgari/izoni with journey to eternity
-izzet counterburn
-naya tokens with divine visitation
-jund (after ravnica allegiance)
Ow yeah! My body needed this, thank you Dev!
Super interested in Abzan Knights and Izzet Counterburn.
...and I'm a sucker for dragon decks too
Congratulations Dev on 100K subscribers!!! 🎉
I'm theorizing about a combination of counterburn with gutterburn... let's see how it goes.
Great videos buy the way
Im working on a weird golgari deck. It plays defenders early then after a midnight reaper to sacrifice the defenders to draw cards and then use different undergrowth triggers to get big creatures and swing for damage. Also cracked a vraska which is great
Ive already cut the defenders. Stitcher’s supplier swapped in as well as reassembling skeleton
Really excited about gutterburn and goblins!
Can't wait to hear your build of Azban Knights
