We've found the best way to reduce food waste was to stop weekly food shopping. We keep a running list of what we've run out of but until we cannot put a day's worth of food together, we keep working through the fridge and pantry. It's been eye-opening! Combined with shopping at Aldi, I bet we cut our food bill by at least a third without compromising what we eat.

The best way for me to save on groceries is not going into the store but do grocery pickup. I don't buy spontaneous and I can see my cost as I add to cart.

YES! I suck at meal planning but this would be a great help for meal planning and only buying what you need. But it saves me a TON in those impulse purchases or having stuff on hand that I don't need and not having certain ingredients for a meal. I never go into the store at all. I only do grocery pickup since it's free. This was the best thing to come out of the pandemic.A lot of the time, the store has coupons online that they don't have in store as well as being able to shop directly from the sales that week.

This was huge for me! No more tossing stuff in the cart. And when my virtual cart got too high, I remove some items. And I put a food line in my budget. Both grocery pickup and eating out. If I need to replace a lot of food, my eating out is reduced. I have been finding that my air fryer has been a game changer for me. Saving money and eating healthier.

I think we all need to pay attention to "free shipping". We get in the habit of spending more than we intended because at a certain spending limit, we get free shipping. I recently found an art item for significantly cheaper at Michael's than Amazon. After paying shipping ($8.95), I was able to get double the amount. I spent around $18. For half the amount at Amazon, I would have been $17.50 (shipping included). I also resisted the temptation to spend $49 for free shipping at Michael's. Not gonna lie, it felt like I was throwing money away, but in reality, I ended spending less and getting more.

March 1, 2023, I started a money challenge. I get paid every 2 weeks. Within each pay period, my challenge was to spend no more than $500. If I failed, it was ok. It’s Dec 2023 now and looking back at my notebook, where I kept track of everything, I was successful only 5 out of the 20 pay periods b/c life happens. I still have until end of Feb 2024 to finish the year challenge. Even after year 1 is over, I think I will continue this challenge and track it. I’m actually using one credit card to track my spending and pay it off at the end of each pay period. I also opened a high yield savings account end of April 2023 and by next April, I might have $10K or close to it. That’s the goal anyways. After the credit card is paid off, any money I do save from my challenge mainly goes to the HYSA or investments. Coming January 2024, I am doing a no spend January! Thanks, Jennifer, for all your videos!

But when I figure what they paid per ounce (or whatever), their coupon price still doesn’t beat the house brand price at Walmart and/or Aldi. I’ve pointed this out gently, and it is NOT well received. They claim to coupon to save money, but I tend to think it’s just a way for them to justify their shopping.

#15 - auto deposit. Instead of the hassle of changing the auto deposit set up auto transfer at your financial institution. From your app set up auto transfer to your savings account.
My ex and I had it so some went to savings, and some went to a Christmas fund. The Christmas fund was the money that wouldn't be available until Nov 1st. At that time, it was auto deposited into our checking account.

Be careful at credit unions. They have policies in place that connect all of your accounts. A friend had a car loan with a credit union. Six months before payoff the credit union demanded full payment(which is illegal) for no specific reason. When she called them out & wouldn't pay the payoff(she still paid the monthly payments) they tried locking her checking and savings accounts. She reported them to the police & the credit union state office. They unlocked her accounts and she promptly moved her money to another bank. She finished up the car payments through the state office. Apparently they were doing this to people so they could repo the cars & resale them.

@@gwenj5419We were talking about credit unions, not banks. The thing is if you have multiple accounts with a CU they will count them all as one & try to take advantage. It's called co-collateralasation. At a bank, if you have a credit card, auto loan or other , they keep them as separate accounts. That means they won't repo your car if you have a problem with say a credit card...but CU do.

I go to local neighborhood salons (in Puerto Rico, many stylist had theirs in the front room of their house and that made their hours super/flexible for very early or late visits). When you are in a Fancy Name Salon the increased price is based on the RENT they pay, nothing to do with the talent of the stylist. I take a photo or 2 of my favorite "do" and they can usually recreate it just fine. I try to tip very well and occasionally bring boxes of goodies or chocolates, brownies, etc. Apparently it works because they can always make room for me.

The last layaway I had was at Kmart....that ship has sailed! I need to be more consistent with meal planning. I used to be a stickler for making a menu for the week and absolutely sticking to it. These are all great tips. Have a very nice Christmas Eve!

A tip you didn't share. Be kind to the people at the stores you frequent. I have a dog who is dangerously allergic to everything. She gets weekly medicated baths. We also live in a tiny home so it's impossible to bath her indoors. In the winter when it's too cold to bathe outside we visit the local pet store to use their tubs. I've always been really friendly with the people who work there because we are there literally every week and we bring our own shampoo and I am in and out in under ten minutes. I've been doing this for 5 years. They rarely charge me now. It's not a planned way to save but being friendly and cleaning up after myself and being courteous of the people and the store and customers has paid off because the manager told me privately that it seems silly to charge me when I only use a single towel and ten minutes of time in their tub. So I probably pay for a bath every 2 months or so when we actually use 8 baths. And you can never go wrong with being kind and courteous to others so it's a win-win.

I cut beauty products- no make up and stick to basics with skin care. Skin feels and looks good for me. :) Saved a lot of money too. I realised that I am using these products that drains my money and not really healthy due to chemicals in it will do harm to me in the long run.

I set up a budget after I got into financial quicksand when I had to quit working and had to rely on disability insurance (btw, best investment I ever made!). I was surprised at how many tv subscriptions I had. And the amount of money that just got spent. I cut out eating out a lot because my medical bills were piling up and I require ongoing treatment for a painful condition. I also talked to my go doctor to get cheaper medication that did the same thing as more expensive newer stuff. I actually got much better control of my health issues with the cheaper meds. I try to save some each month, if only a little bit. Those little bits become emergency funds for when things break or something unexpected comes up. And don’t forget to budget for car expenses. It took me almost four years to get state disability. I’m on both state and reduced long term disability, which only goes until my full retirement age. So trying to save what I can now for when I lose more than half of my disability at retirement. I made mistakes in helping my family too much and having to pay for all their funerals since none of them prepared for it. Wiped out my retirement. And with inflation being crazy, I’ve learned how to have fun with game or movie nights with friends, where we make cheap snacks and finger food. Fun and cheap.

I resell unwanted things and since I have started on this journey, I have really not wanted many things at all. I have certain goals and if these items don't fit the plan, then out they go! You would be surprised at how many people want your stuff! My strategy is to price items at a third of what people could buy it for elsewhere and post it repeatedly (deleting the old post) so that it reaches lots of eyeballs :) Also, be sensible about what is likely to sell at what time. We got a generous giftcard to a beautiful restaurant on the lake. I am holding onto it until closer to Valentine's to sell it then!
