We've found the best way to reduce food waste was to stop weekly food shopping. We keep a running list of what we've run out of but until we cannot put a day's worth of food together, we keep working through the fridge and pantry. It's been eye-opening! Combined with shopping at Aldi, I bet we cut our food bill by at least a third without compromising what we eat.
Love that!
It's pronounced, "koo pon", not "que pon"! ❤🎉
Last year I kept every $5.00 bill I got. End of year I had $1,050.00 for Christmas. I did not spend it all on Christmas. I paid 2 large unexpected bills and had just over $500. for Christmas and December birthday
I don't use or carry cash.
I’m a Senior Citizen. Watching a young woman who wants to save money blesses my heart. What you’re doing is what we were taught when growing up. We were taught the difference between a want & a need. 👏👏👏👏for you doing what you’re doing. Keep’m coming.
Thank you for your kind words 🤗
I was raised by my Grandmother! She raised 4 kids during the depression! She taught me all those wonderful saving tips from that era! I use them almost everyday! I miss her!
We were raised frugal but never learned what to do with money.
The best way for me to save on groceries is not going into the store but do grocery pickup. I don't buy spontaneous and I can see my cost as I add to cart.
Renee, that is a great tip! It works well for a lot of people. More are coming around to it.
YES! I suck at meal planning but this would be a great help for meal planning and only buying what you need. But it saves me a TON in those impulse purchases or having stuff on hand that I don't need and not having certain ingredients for a meal. I never go into the store at all. I only do grocery pickup since it's free. This was the best thing to come out of the pandemic.A lot of the time, the store has coupons online that they don't have in store as well as being able to shop directly from the sales that week.
This was huge for me! No more tossing stuff in the cart. And when my virtual cart got too high, I remove some items. And I put a food line in my budget. Both grocery pickup and eating out. If I need to replace a lot of food, my eating out is reduced. I have been finding that my air fryer has been a game changer for me. Saving money and eating healthier.
Yes, this has been a game-changer for me, too.
Only downside I have found is it is hard to compare prices on the apps vs the shelves.
Ive been watching dogs in my home for 15 years. $35/night for boarding and $20/day for daycare. 2-5 dogs all the time except when I’m on vacation. It allowed me to stay home with my kids for years.
Wow! Thank you for sharing this! 🤗
Hi Jennifer, I am relatively new to your channel, BUT since I started watching your videos I managed to pay off my two credit cards (I only have two) bc I made it a priority... Thank you so much and Happy Holidays!!!
Really!!!! Congratulations... that is amazing and makes me so happy 🤗 Keep it up. You've got this!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Do the money opportunities video!
Great job! Keep at it!

I think we all need to pay attention to "free shipping". We get in the habit of spending more than we intended because at a certain spending limit, we get free shipping. I recently found an art item for significantly cheaper at Michael's than Amazon. After paying shipping ($8.95), I was able to get double the amount. I spent around $18. For half the amount at Amazon, I would have been $17.50 (shipping included). I also resisted the temptation to spend $49 for free shipping at Michael's. Not gonna lie, it felt like I was throwing money away, but in reality, I ended spending less and getting more.
Katherine, threshold minimums for free shipping is a big one to beware of.
This is a very good point and one that trips me up.
I'm doing low spend Jan/Feb. During that time I'm going to declutter! I started selling on Poshmark a few months ago and have made a nice bit of money on items I no longer use. I'm going to continue that in 2024.
Susan, that is awesome! Are there any tips you have found for selling on Poshmark?
@@THEJENNIFERCOOK Sell items that are applicable for the season we are currently in. Most people aren't looking for shorts right now. Be realistic with pricing second hand items. Do research to see what comparable items are selling for.
Yes Susan, do you have any tips for selling on Poshmark?
@@THEJENNIFERCOOK Look and see what other people are selling and what has sold well for them to get an idea for the market. There are lots of YTuber's who talk about clothing brands that tend to sell better than others. Poshmark is a side job for me to make a little extra money but there are people who do it to make a living. McThriftzie and Cayley Elaine are great sources on YT.
My skin is so much happier now that I’ve simplified my routine to cleanse and moisturise! And the occasional exfoliant. Happy skin and happy wallet. Simplifying is key. Always.
I will add two things, Tretinoin and Korean sunscreen. They are a must in my budget
I made a vegetarian soup with veggies I needed to use up: spinach and fennel and also added a can of beans. Meals for 2 days, and 2 for the freezer. I also roasted beets.
Buy now pay later can also work for you. I've used it to buy high price things over 9 months which means I didn't have to pay interest. The whole amount must be cleared before a certain date but when you're organised it's great.
March 1, 2023, I started a money challenge. I get paid every 2 weeks. Within each pay period, my challenge was to spend no more than $500. If I failed, it was ok. It’s Dec 2023 now and looking back at my notebook, where I kept track of everything, I was successful only 5 out of the 20 pay periods b/c life happens. I still have until end of Feb 2024 to finish the year challenge. Even after year 1 is over, I think I will continue this challenge and track it. I’m actually using one credit card to track my spending and pay it off at the end of each pay period. I also opened a high yield savings account end of April 2023 and by next April, I might have $10K or close to it. That’s the goal anyways. After the credit card is paid off, any money I do save from my challenge mainly goes to the HYSA or investments. Coming January 2024, I am doing a no spend January! Thanks, Jennifer, for all your videos!
I use to work at Kmart. Layaway was so popular. Especially for school shopping and Christmas.
Yes! Those were big spending events.
As far as clothes: washing in cold water, using vinegar and wool dryer balls instead of softener, hang drying if possible and wearing the clothes several days and doing full loads will save on laundry costs.
Do you use vinegar in place of detergent or in addition to, and if so what is the ratio. Also, what are wool balls?
Ditto
@@conniekline9881You can use vinegar in addition to detergent. The vinegar will remove odors.
@conniekline9881 i wasn't original poster but I use vinegar in place of fabric softener
What are the drier balls for? I see them all the time but have no idea what the do!
The best shaving cream I have used is hair conditioner, it works great
And get the cheap conditioner at the dollar tree
Soap!
It’s so crazy what people criticize. You say coupon beautifully. 😊
😊 thank you
Like how you repeated the word coupons to make your point 😊
Hey Jennifer, I'd love to see a video on side hussles 👍😊
Midwesterner here…I also pronounce coupon as Q PON! 😂
🤗
Me too!😅 Oh and I live in the great state of Utah!
I say it that way too. But I'm in AZ and previously New York. Not sure where I picked it up
@@shellyvinsant4542 probably as you drove through or flew over the Midwest on your way from New York! 😁

I re-gift items if I have too many of something. I just received more kitchen towels. I'm gifting my cousin 2 of them (she's in the army with 2 young boys). Besides taking her & her boys to lunch for the holidays.
I sure do remember layaway. It was great to do at Christmas because the store would keep your item while you paid on it and you didn’t have to hide it from your kids at home.
Jane, that's a great point! 🤗
Hi Jennifer. Great video! Really enjoyed your 20 tips for saving money. When it comes to shaving, try using hair conditioner. I'm a flight attendant and having one less thing to take with me is a win. Cheers from the UK!
Great tip!
Also, just because you have a coupon doesn't mean that you can't find a cheaper price product in the store that does the same thing.
Sandra, great point to remember!
This made me quit couponing.
This! I’ve watched SO many ladies do “extreme couponing” on TikTok. But when I figure what they paid per ounce (or whatever), their coupon price still doesn’t beat the house brand price at Walmart and/or Aldi. I’ve pointed this out gently, and it is NOT well received. They claim to coupon to save money, but I tend to think it’s just a way for them to justify their shopping.
Just happened upon your video today, and I’m thankful for all your great advice and ideas. I was unexpectedly let go from my job in July and have been squeaking by ever since, but am motivated to find a side hustle to do that will make up the deficit. I also struggle with some arthritis so it needs to be from home. Thank you and hoping we have a wonderful 2024.
Connie, thank you so much! I hope the video was helpful. Best of luck for you 🤗
I always grab coupons for items I use and then wait for a sale then use the coupons too to save even more. I also don't waste food, keep my peels and scraps for broth and stock making. Even citrus peels get made into candy/extracts or home cleaning products.
Hi Jennifer, I'm in Australia and just found your channel. Thankyou i think it's great!! I'm in my late 60s and have always lived a frugal life, the best way of saving money for me when my family was young was shopping in thrift shops and yard sales. It saved us heaps! I still rearly ever by new.
Hi, in Australia! 🤗
Love your channel. Such wise advice. I am in my 60s and learn something new every time I watch. Yes do a tube on ways to make extra money.
Thank you sooo much! Hugs
#13 - cooking extra.
I put them in the freezer
#15 - auto deposit. Instead of the hassle of changing the auto deposit set up auto transfer at your financial institution. From your app set up auto transfer to your savings account.
My ex and I had it so some went to savings, and some went to a Christmas fund. The Christmas fund was the money that wouldn't be available until Nov 1st. At that time, it was auto deposited into our checking account.
Thank you for sharing these!
Credit unions tend to be better for interest and fees. My credit union had no minimum for opening an account plus interest even on checking accounts.
Gwen, you are right!
Be careful at credit unions. They have policies in place that connect all of your accounts. A friend had a car loan with a credit union. Six months before payoff the credit union demanded full payment(which is illegal) for no specific reason. When she called them out & wouldn't pay the payoff(she still paid the monthly payments) they tried locking her checking and savings accounts. She reported them to the police & the credit union state office. They unlocked her accounts and she promptly moved her money to another bank. She finished up the car payments through the state office. Apparently they were doing this to people so they could repo the cars & resale them.
@@lilypudd There are bad fish in any pond. Banks have locked people's accounts or closed their accounts because they didn't like the customer's politics.
Was this a Federally or state regulated credit union?? @@lilypudd
@@gwenj5419We were talking about credit unions, not banks. The thing is if you have multiple accounts with a CU they will count them all as one & try to take advantage. It's called co-collateralasation. At a bank, if you have a credit card, auto loan or other , they keep them as separate accounts. That means they won't repo your car if you have a problem with say a credit card...but CU do.
Meal prep: I also make more than we can eat. I also take OUT the amount for another meal before I serve the meal so we don't over eat at the table. It never fails we will overeat each time I do not remove the extra portions. LOL Thanks for sharing the good tips.
Great tip!
That is an excellent idea, we usually tell the guys it’s supposed to last 2 meals, but removing a portion of it is a great idea.
A diet program had people put half of their meal in a to go container before taking a bite of food when eating out.
I’m now going to save my magazines-especially the colorful ones-to use as wrapping paper. I’ve also cancelled all my magazine subscriptions except for one.
I say coupon the same way you do. I’m a southerner, too, as you seem to be, so it must be the difference between the southerners and northerners say that word. Thanks for your tips.
Hi Jen❤ thanks for your fantastic videos. Love them. Have fun and enjoy the rest of your week. Xxxxx
Thank you! You too!
Great advice! I think both Sears and Montgomery Wards offered layaway options back when they were around. I remember mom & grandma using it.
You can also save money on skincare/makeup from buying off of eBay. I’ve found my favorite items brand new for about half price and free shipping.
Love Ebay. I buy gently used Hoka tennis shoes there.
Merry Christmas Eve Jen and great tips as always!
Merry Christmas to you!!! 🤗
Simplify beauty routine use up all your products. I changed from Lancome to Sephora own brand makeup and saved 35.00. I retired this year. Also, I went from an expensive hair salon to a local one within 1/2 mile from my home and saved $100. Also, I went from going every 4 weeks to 5 weeks.
Those are huge savings!
oh, you are SOOOO right about the hair salon! I go to local neighborhood salons (in Puerto Rico, many stylist had theirs in the front room of their house and that made their hours super/flexible for very early or late visits). When you are in a Fancy Name Salon the increased price is based on the RENT they pay, nothing to do with the talent of the stylist. I take a photo or 2 of my favorite "do" and they can usually recreate it just fine. I try to tip very well and occasionally bring boxes of goodies or chocolates, brownies, etc. Apparently it works because they can always make room for me.
I don’t do apps for budgeting. I love my book. I keep my pen with my book so never lose it x
Hi jennifer. Im from malaysia. Ur video just came across my wall and immediately i fall in love with u and your content! Hope you always in a good health and happy.
I just use Dove bar soap in the shower to shave. And you're absolutely right about the cost of women's shaving products. How ridiculous! By the way, MANY people pronounce coupon the way you do and I had to laugh that someone actually didn't know that. lol
🤗
Thank u for the tips!
Hi Jennifer. Re number 15...I am retired here in Australia so cannot approach my 'boss' to arrange this. I have set up a automatic transfer from my main cheque account to a savings account every fortnight, two days after our pension goes in. Works well and it is a higher interest account, if I do not withdraw that month. No 17...I use my conditioner bar as my shaving cream as suggested by the New Zealand company Ethique. I also use their shampoo bars. Great for travel also. Love your videos.
Thanks for your good work Jennifer happy holidays to you and yours!
Thank you so much, Liza! 🤗
Thank you for all these tips😊
Merry Christmas Eve and thank you for the reminder on how to prepare to be even more savvy on saving. Yes please on ideas for supplemental income. Canceling multiple subscriptions is BIG, since they all add up and the "deals" are enticing when offered. Thank you and Blessings!
Lisette, I will work on that video for you all! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 🤗
I love your topic here! ❤

Thanks for even more ideas! Yes, please do share ideas with us on making money. Definitely time for me to start looking at ways to save, like rejecting female specific shavers.
You got it!
Yes, PLEASE! Any ideas for making some increased on the side money would be fabulous. Great video, as usual! Blessings! :)
Thank you! I will work on a video for that 🤗
Merry Christmas! Thank you for this list. Yes, I stopped buying shaving cream. Started using a dab of hair conditioner.. Saves money & protects my skin better.
That's a great idea, too! Merry Christmas ❤️
I'm also really excited for a declutter
Merry Christmas Jennifer 🎄

Merry Christmas and lots of luck. Thank you for wonderful video. You have changed my life and my way of thinking. Wish to continue in 2024 as well❤
Shaila, that means so much to me 🤗 I am thankful I could help in any little way ❤️
The last layaway I had was at Kmart....that ship has sailed! I need to be more consistent with meal planning. I used to be a stickler for making a menu for the week and absolutely sticking to it. These are all great tips. Have a very nice Christmas Eve!
Yep, that was one of the places that did it. All Kmarts around us are gone. Merry Christmas!
Yes Kmart was our store for layaway when we were little kids😃❤️
@@babydollkincaid4584 I still miss Kmart, especially at Christmas. I always did part of my Christmas shopping there, and they always had great Black Friday sales.
So many great ideas, thank you!
You are so welcome!
I like the way you say coupon. Works for me.
🤗
Loved Layaway 😊
Yes a video about making extra money!
Hola Jennifer

Yes do the video on side hussels..Please !
I just found your channel today 😁 So glad ..Thank you for the information 🙏❤️
Welcome! Thank you so much 🤗
Great video! I would love to learn more about side hustles.
I really like your content. Thanks for sharing these saving tips.
Ellie, thank you so much! 🤗
A tip you didn't share. Be kind to the people at the stores you frequent. I have a dog who is dangerously allergic to everything. She gets weekly medicated baths. We also live in a tiny home so it's impossible to bath her indoors. In the winter when it's too cold to bathe outside we visit the local pet store to use their tubs. I've always been really friendly with the people who work there because we are there literally every week and we bring our own shampoo and I am in and out in under ten minutes. I've been doing this for 5 years. They rarely charge me now. It's not a planned way to save but being friendly and cleaning up after myself and being courteous of the people and the store and customers has paid off because the manager told me privately that it seems silly to charge me when I only use a single towel and ten minutes of time in their tub. So I probably pay for a bath every 2 months or so when we actually use 8 baths. And you can never go wrong with being kind and courteous to others so it's a win-win.
Megan, you are absolutely right! Being kind seems to be even more of a lost art these days. Hugs to you 🤗
I cut beauty products- no make up and stick to basics with skin care. Skin feels and looks good for me. :) Saved a lot of money too. I realised that I am using these products that drains my money and not really healthy due to chemicals in it will do harm to me in the long run.
I also say coupon the same way you do. The other way doesn’t sound right.
Agreed!
Layaway.. Kmart and Walmarts for sure. You paid a certain amount down, then you made payments over a certain period of time that they allotted then you picked the items up. Anna In Ohio
🤗
I started buying using "men's" disposable razors. It's a big savings.
I am new here and excited to start saving!! I am trying your skin care routine today!!
Cindy, welcome! Hugs to you 🤗
I set up a budget after I got into financial quicksand when I had to quit working and had to rely on disability insurance (btw, best investment I ever made!). I was surprised at how many tv subscriptions I had. And the amount of money that just got spent. I cut out eating out a lot because my medical bills were piling up and I require ongoing treatment for a painful condition. I also talked to my go doctor to get cheaper medication that did the same thing as more expensive newer stuff. I actually got much better control of my health issues with the cheaper meds. I try to save some each month, if only a little bit. Those little bits become emergency funds for when things break or something unexpected comes up. And don’t forget to budget for car expenses. It took me almost four years to get state disability. I’m on both state and reduced long term disability, which only goes until my full retirement age. So trying to save what I can now for when I lose more than half of my disability at retirement. I made mistakes in helping my family too much and having to pay for all their funerals since none of them prepared for it. Wiped out my retirement. And with inflation being crazy, I’ve learned how to have fun with game or movie nights with friends, where we make cheap snacks and finger food. Fun and cheap.
Nice video Merry Christmas to you 🎉🎉🎉🎉Greetings from Panama
Thelma, thank you so much! Merry Christmas ❤️
Yes please do a video on how to make extra money
Right there with you!! Coupon!!! You say it correctly in my book.
🤗
She doesn't pronounce it correctly but she said that she's comfortable with the way she says it, so it doesn't matter 😅. Love her content
I love your video
Hi Jennifer - You can save even more money by using your body wash to shave with. I will lather up with body wash and instead of just washing it off I’ll then use that to shave with.
I would love a video on services we could do to make money!
Yes, please do a video about side hustles to earn extra income! I love the home doggie daycare idea you mentioned. Are there apps for that? I’ve considered virtual assistant work that I could do on the side so I’d love some tips on how to dive into that. Pitfalls and different ways to do it.
Thanks! You do an awesome job at this!
Great content
I resell unwanted things and since I have started on this journey, I have really not wanted many things at all. I have certain goals and if these items don't fit the plan, then out they go! You would be surprised at how many people want your stuff! My strategy is to price items at a third of what people could buy it for elsewhere and post it repeatedly (deleting the old post) so that it reaches lots of eyeballs :) Also, be sensible about what is likely to sell at what time. We got a generous giftcard to a beautiful restaurant on the lake. I am holding onto it until closer to Valentine's to sell it then!
Great ideas! Thank you for sharing 🤗
Great ideas! I just downloaded the budgeting app. It looks really easy to set up and use.
Hope you enjoy it!
I really enjoyed your video & great tips 👍❤

I paused this video and went to make a French toast. Bake with the old bread I had in my freezer! I’ve never made one of these before, but my bread stash was stacking up, so it was time.
Fantastic!
I´ll add avoid long-term suscriptions. On gyms are very usual. The most of the people don´t manage to go to the gym several times per week during so long.
Please make a video on how to make more cash. I’m interested in passive income as I can’t work but anything will help. Thanks!
