One of the best songs by Amorphis imho - perfect lyrics, original, but really metal music... couldn't be better. And about the singing, Tomi is really a master of playing with the voice intensity, thaťs what makes him unique.
Amorphis really is something. This song is (just like all their songs) EPIC!! Wonder how the hell they do that. Not many band can pull a stuff like that. They've managed to stay epic all from The Karelian Isthmus to their current albums. This song is probably one of their best songs on this album!
You nailed it right on the head there...and you know what? People who criticise other peoples perception of what metal is and what it is not and who claim to know who is a metal head and who isnt ...those people haven't actually got a clue because they are not paying attention..they are just caught up in their own arrogance. It is one thing to have an opinion of what you think is metal and what you think falls into another category-But it is quite another to just put someone down. Metal is Metal
Mother wept for her son she wept and sang anxiously pondered fate his and her own A sun's ray, in through the eye glimmered in the room of mind changing the woman shape sorrow fled her face From the shaman into shaman From the chimney a witch flew out shaman dived across the sky under her the woods and lakes till she saw the Northland gates I have come for my son, where is my son? I accept no lies, no falsehoods or deception I'll send you plagues unnumbered destruction upon your house I lay to waste your treasures and slay your fairest daughter The queen of north told the way the road to River Black impossible and incomplete the path of no return
I have now watched about 50 random metal videos in a row, and in almost every video there is a top comment saying about how this is metal. "Now THIS is real metal!" "This is the most metal it can get" "If you want metal, this is the song". Why is being metal so important and glorifying?
I just love that feeling that Tomi has to sing, amazing how they can make you feel their music went from your ears to your bones and finally deep in your soul, Amorphis fan ´till death lml
Oh I totally agree there too...there are distinct differences that make one style different to the next I do know and yes its important to be able to distinguish them or atleast ask questions.. I couldnt agree more..I infact like your tree explanation. However I was referring to the people who think they are so high and mighty with their detailed categorizations and putting people down for it.... All I can say is...this is an amazing song :-)
Thank you! I love metal with all of my heart, but what kills me is when metal has to be categorized so precisely and if you're wrong, then you're considered to be a non metal-head. It's just like " Who the fuck cares about what genre or sub-genre it is! Just sit back and enjoy the METAL!"
@ShadowAce70 Glad to see there are more like me. If I'm ever trying to explain what a band sounds like, I rarely use genre and go more along the lines of "They sound like LoG in their BTP days" or something like that. Which, imo, their latest album does actually sound like their older stuff.
It's really funny actually. I wrote this comment two years ago (time flies swiftly!) and ever since then, I have learned a LOT more about metal and listened to a LOT more bands from the day I commented on this album. I must say though, despite what I said a long time ago, I learned that categorization is quite necessary in order to distinguish between bands and their sound. Amorphis falls under, I guess progressive metal and that's important because they can represent the genre...
I have seen the Amorphis three times, but Shaman nowhere. Shaman is absolutely their best song. Even better than Silent Waters. But it seems to be forgotten :-(
It's difficult to find bands that are too much like Amorphis because of how unique they are. I can recommend Turisas and Elvenking, and if you're okay with unclean(screamed, growled) vocals, Scar Symmetry, Opeth, and Insomnium. Also Avantasia and maybe Helloween.
+Amos Z You are right, it's almost impossible to find a band like Amorphis, I've listened the bands you've counted but still Amorphis is the most precious one for me
(continuation)... better than, let's say a person calls the Colombian black metal band Inquisition progressive metal. Genres and such are important and while I still agree that PRECISE labeling is unnecessary, calling all metal bands "Just Metal" is something I dismiss now. Metal music is like a tree: The tree trunk is METAL, and the trigs and branches are the genres, subgenres, and sounds. In my opinion now, it's ignorant to say "I listen to just METAL!" because you aren't distinguishing.
This band has the little extra doze of "knowledge". Metal band consist of unbelieveable intellectual people. Thats one of the reason why i listen to this. Read between the lines children and mature, this ain't no shit:)
@Tb0neZ5 Despited being hated called a 'Silly Metalhead' I suppose you have your own opinion, But i agree i listen to classical music and play piano aswell as violin but i dont like the culture.
This song has me on the edge of a metalgasm
one of the best amorphis songs IMO
MOST UNDERATED SONG ON EARTH ! THIS RIFF IS MORE THAN EPIC!
Greetings from Greece. Here in Valkania Amorphis is a favourite band!
This song deserves more recognition...
My favorite through many years - so much power provided for you - just by listening
One of the best songs by Amorphis imho - perfect lyrics, original, but really metal music... couldn't be better.

The lyrics give me goosebumps.

Melody. Melody is THE key.
every time I land in Finland in my head I hear "under her the woods and lakes til she saw the Northland gate."
Great song and great album. I think this album may be their most underrated.
brilliant song!!!
Awesome song.
fantastic song fantastic riff fantastic vocals !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This song captured my heart the very first time I listened to it. 😍
agreed. this melodic part in the metal is amazing. besides, Tomi is one of the few singers that gives goosebumps consequently.
15 poor deaf guys..... Epic song, Amorphis are the almighty lords of melody

Some folks confuse noise rock with heavy metal, or hard rock with heavy metal, is probably the most condensed way of saying it.
I just love that feeling that Tomi has to sing, amazing how they can make you feel their music went from your ears to your bones and finally deep in your soul, Amorphis fan ´till death lml
Shaman and Enigma are the best songs of the album.
@Beaumain Don't forget Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, Acid Rain, Meshuggah, Circus Maximus.

This is one of my favorites song from Amorphis. Can anyone recommend me bands like Amorphis ? (Progressive Metal I guess)

@KillEmAllHUN yeah same here, heard it first time from a friend. just awesome.
I always thought it was 'under her the moons and lakes' instead of 'woods and lakes'

We respect Amorphis.
Come and visit Ukraine!
Because it's not 1D/Justin Bieber/terrible pop.
Amorphis pure melodic DEATH METAL? i disagree with that. Its progressive metal.
I have 2 "genres"...Like and Don't Like!... I'm a metal fan not a file clerk!
