Awhile back we talked about my sweet potatoes not setting any slips. We suspected sprout inhibitor. I got tired of fooling with them and tossed them in the ash pile. I was weedeating around the edge of the ash pile this morning and low and behold I had six inch slips. No roots so I've got them in water...wish me luck.

Thanks for doing such a well planned, organized 'show & tell' of gardening without all the fluff. Nothing wrong with fluff...if you have time for it. I don't. I noticed one time someone also made a 'grateful' comment about you putting in the 'notes' throughout the presentation. They said it really helped for the deaf or hard of hearing population. That was a warm fuzzy. How considerate. To be honest, I have taken several shots with my camera of your 'notes.' I am putting them all around my raised bed (all the way back to the fence) and putting green 4 in. metal landscaping border all the way in front and from bed to bed. That way no mowing or weed eating . And a nice polished look. Ii also strive for beauty. I have to look at, and like, it. I am always happy to see your new videos. That way I know that you are doing good.

But don't rototill them into the planting soil because they will use all the nitrogen in the soil to help them decompose, and garden vegetable will lack enoiugh nitrogen to grow successfully. As to me doing good, actually I have been dealing with what I believe to be side effects of the COVID vaccine. I am some better but still don't feel well. Add that to old age and I am struggling to get my garden planted. I will get through it given time. Thanks for stopping by. C.

My first year growing sweet potatoes and I've already seen this first hand. I paid $20 for 12 Covington slips by mail(poor looking). They just sat there and a few died. Two weeks later I put in Beauregard plants in 2 x 2 cells @ $7.50 for 12 from the Alabama Co-op(beautiful plants). The Beauregard took off and are already running off the mound. The Covington are just starting to run. No comparison! From here on I can control the quality of my slips and I'll make my own as you showed. Thanks

I usually grow them about 5 or 6 days. If it was rainy and you couldn't set them in the garden, you could hold them in the water bottle for a couple weeks. OAG

It depends on if you have a means to provide light to the growing plants. And it depends on the variety of pepper you are growing. Read on the package and it will tell you when to plant the seeds. OAG
Don’t forget, the greens from the sweet potatoes are edible, to me they taste like spinach. So when the sweet potato vines begin to spread all over the place, just trim them back and cook em, they are good and good for you.
How long did you have the slips in the water bottle before you planted them in the groundl? Planting time is getting short here and I have to make a decision.Your idea shounds great.I think I would do better if I used your method.
About 5 days. The time spent in the water bottle is not wasted time because the slip is growing more and health roots. Of course you wouldn't want to keep the slip in the water bottle for longer than necessary to get it established and growing. The goal is to not have the slip experience transplant shock and/or set back when set in the garden. OAG

Sweet potatoes need 120 days to produce tubers. So, it depends on when we would get our first frost. Count back from the first frost, 120 days and that would be the date you need to get the slips in the ground, We are almost at 1 July and 120 days would be the end of October, but we would have be watching for the first frost. Usually we get a couple nights of light frosts and the have 2 to 3 weeks more of warm weather. Some years it has been into the frost week of Nov before we got a frost. Make sure the sweet potato you use is an organic one. Most store potatoes are treated to resist sprouting. Organic should work, but it still takes a long time.

It will probably grow if planted direct and kept watered. Rooting it first helps the plant to get started growing in the ground.

i live in hartford ark when i plant my pepper seed in the spring what month should i plant my seed in i going to plant them out by may 15

I peeled some potatoes and threw the skins in the compost heap. They started growing so I left them alone.
