  • The Cosmos' seventh year of existence saw them drop "New York" from the club name (it would be restored in 1979), move into Giants Stadium (where they would play until their dissolution in 1985), and win their second NASL championship in Pelé's final year as a professional footballer. Pelé's last match was on October 1, 1977, in front of a capacity crowd at Giants Stadium: in an exhibition match between New York and his former club Santos, Pelé appeared for both sides, playing one half for each. The Cosmos won the game 2--1. The Cosmos finished second in the 4-team Eastern Division and third out of 18 teams league-wide on their way to the 1977 championship.

I first of all want to thank Pele for all he did in the entire soccer world. To the NASL he was everything. Just great memories being a Seattle Sounders fan since the beginning. I was there at Soccer Bowl ‘77 with a happy group from Seattle… what a huge deal it was! It was unfortunate for Tony Chursky to make that mistake. It was a close game and could have turned out differently… Pele went out a true champ!

What a great snapshot of a unique moment in American sports lore. It's too bad the NASL could not build on the momentum. But in many ways the other football is to blame, or more specifically the ownership rules which prohibited owners from having teams in other sports. In the early days of the NASL you had NFL men like Lamar Hunt who had teams, people with the money and foresight to put the game in the incubator it needed to be in so that it could organically grow. It makes me sad the beautiful game still struggles in a lot of ways to have a proper place at our nations sporting table.

I think a more appropriate title for the North American Soccer League really should have been named. Pele Soccer League of U.S. and Canada. Because the popularity of soccer peaked with Pele and dropped when he left. Basically he brought the crowds and made the North American Soccer League for a time very wealthy. Then within 3 years of him leaving. The crowds started to drop. The money coming in started to drop and TV coverage ratings dropped within 4 years the league was off American tv screens. Stadiums empty within 7 years of him leaving the league a number of teams had in North America had gone bankrupt all the money dried out and the league finally collapsed and disbanded by 1984. Soccer in U.S. was in doldrums for rest of the decade until it was again fully revived a decade late in 1994 with USA 94 World Cup. When U.S. held a highly successful USA 94 world cup. To full houses and high tv ratings and soccer was back again. THis time though American soccer authorities did not let the momentum slip after world cup by launching the MLS within two years of the world cup in 1996 and removed a lot of the mistakes they made with NASL. Its paid off because the MLS is till going strong 26 years later and soccer since USA 94 has been in a very healthy state in North America no doubt also helped by the fact American national team has managed to qualify to WC in 1998,2002, 2006,2010, 2010 and 2022 which has helped the popularity of the sport to the point Soccer in America has moved above Ice Hockey in U.S. and threatening Baseball in popularity also a big demographic change of U.S. since USA 94 has also helped with a vast number of new immigrants from Latin American countries, African countries and Eastern Europe, Russia etc from soccer mad parts of the world have arrived to live in America since the hosting of USA 94. Which means soccer in America is now well supported and far cry from the doldrum days of the 1980s and early 1990s. No Doubt Pele impact was huge. However once he the big star left the scene soccer in North America collapsed within 7 years. I heard Pele today passed away. RIP to a arguably the greatest name in soccer history.

As an Englishman, I want The World Game of FOOTBALL to establish itself in North America (the U.S. & Canada) the central-south american countries allready enjoy our World Game of FOOTBALL.
I remember the N.A.S.L. it started in 1968 and folded in 1984, the reason for its inevitable downfall was simple ... 1,They just made up teams and placed them where they wanted them. 2, They had no youth system or reserve team set up. 3, They had old FOOTBALL World stars who had come to the end and just wanted to stroll and get some easy money, plus lower league players who would not progress in higher leagues ... In proof of this, we in the U.K./G.B. used to see the edited games on our Saturday sports programme World of Sport within the FOOTBALL section called On The Ball. It was laughed at ... as the standard was on a par with school boy football.
Hower you have learned from that and put into place much better structures.
I wish YOU WELL in your joint venture in hosting The Word Cup Finals ... Long Live Our World Game of FOOTBALL!.

The Cosmos were stacked compared to the rest of that league. They were winning games 8 to nothing, 9 to nothing.. They were like the Yankees of soccer, they bought and stole all the best players and naturally they always win.
