- The 1980 New York Cosmos season was the 10th season for the New York Cosmos in the North American Soccer League. The Cosmos completed their third double, finishing 1st in the overall league table and defeating the Fort Lauderdale Strikers 3-0 in Soccer Bowl '80.

I hated my teen years growing up. The one bright spot was the NY Cosmos. I can’t tell you who I met yesterday, but I remember the entire starting roster for the 1980 team.

I'm jealous you had a chance to see them in their prime. I watched the re-birth at Old Trafford and watched in New York in 2015 :)
I grew up in Southern California in the 70s and 80s and could not get enough of soccer playing and watching the NASL. Went to all the camps with the Aztecs and met Best and went to Soccer Bowl 82 in San Diego plus pretty much every game we could get to in the area. One of the few things in life I remember fondly. Rarely watch soccer since the NASL folded. If you were there during the time you would understand. The Cosmos were always the holy grail to beat. Love this video. Fond memories of the Aztecs series.
"Chinaglia shoots a grass-cutter...GOAL!" I miss the old NASL. RIP Georgio Chinaglia, Carlos Alberto, Roberto Cabanas, and Jim Karvellas.

Imagine if the Cosmos had signed Brian Clough! Now the combo of Coughie and Chinaglia would have been a media extravaganza of the highest order!

So lucky to have been a part of this during my childhood. The embarrassment of riches that the Cosmos and the league possessed is not lost on me.
