You can be committed without locking yourself away from the world. Nothing in the Bible says you have to do that. The Bible says it is better to marry than to “burn” (e.g. have lustful thoughts).

@@americancreole6299 firstly, religious sisters don't lock themselves away-you seem to not know a lot about Catholic Christians. They don't live in a cloister hidden away-tough some folks are called to that to live their whole life in prayer-they give themselves more fully to the world through their service to God. Even in the old testament some were called to make a special vow to the Lord and live in service and prayer-the Nazarites in Numbers 6:1-21 and the instruction for Christian widows who dedicated themselves to God in 1 Timothy 5. Also in Luke 2:25, the prophetess Anna and so many others throughout history. The bible was created for the church and by the early church-inspired by God of course butit aint God. The church existed the first 300 years without the bible compiled in one book, it took the early fathers of the Catholic church to do that. Thats why 2 Thessalonians 2:15 tells us to follow ALL the traditions that the apostles taught-whether in writing-the soon to e bible-or in word of mouth passed on in the church. We have kept that for 2,000 years by the Holy Spirit. Ancient (Catholic) Christianity their is an emphasis on service as we believe what Yeshua said "whatever you do to the least of my brothers (and sisters) you did it to me" and we know from His words and the HolyTradition of the faith that Yeshua is made visible in others, especially the poor and oppressed because we are made in the image and likeness of God. If not for nuns and monks, who would care so selflessly for the poor and sick of the world???? I have yet to see a similar movement of self-sacrificial love from someone who was just "committed." Full commitment is leaving all for Christ and some are called to do that more fully. God bless
Well, not all nuns are pleasant.I am a travel RN ,and took an assignment in a facility ran by nuns.I felt intimidated, unwelcomed, interrogated as if I was on trial every day when I would give report about the patients. I believe that if you are doing God's work you should find a place in your heart to always remain pleasent.
That's a high bar for a human don't you think? Yeshua didn't call them to leave their humanity nor would He as what He wants from us, warts and all. I have met some sour nuns for sure but more wonderful ones. Also met some sour moms, police, teachers, firefighters and social workers and all are called to service whether they believe in God or not. I don't expect a religious person to be nice all the time just because they are "called" anymore than I expect all married folks to be nice to their mates or even faithful even though they were called to marriage to serve God too. I do expect them all to be striving for deeper holiness everyday in how they live but even that is their choice to follow God more deeply. I believe that this type of lofty expectation for ordained or consecrated folks is part of the problem because it sets them in superhuman place they shouldn't be in and so we watch them fall and then condemn what they were supposed to be believing. Where else in people's lives do we have such a set up??
I agree....there is a huge range. I suspect that some people go into certain areas based on love and passion. And others often are drawn to positions where there is some sort of influence but it's more ego driven. For example, mental health professionals run the gamut but a subset are drawn to the position because it gives them power over vulnerable people and they like the power. There were studies showing that you get a subset that is larger for antisocial personality disorder for those in positions that deal with vulnerable persons: so the legal field, police work, doctors etc. have higher rates across the board of antisocial personality disorder than those who devote themselves to writing and poetry, dance, landscaping etc. I have always suspected this is why you get such a huge divide in roles where you are put in charge of tending to someone ill (mentally or physically), someone needing counsel (law) or roles that deeply impact life and which are high stakes. Oddly it seems like there is so much polarization and less in the middle-ness. I attended several Christian private schools as a kid and went to church. Some of the worst bullies ever were kids from those schools (I also attended public schools too at other times.) It was more prominent once I became an adult. I even found some churches had a dark and shallow energy and would preach really (IMHO) superficial and harmful things...like shunning and outright ignoring people who were agnostic, praising wealth etc. Not sure if I am explaining that well, but it is scary how many stories of child abuse come out of the church. Obviously some bad energy people sneak in, sadly. Take care. ❤
I am always a little surprised when someone asks a young lady why she became a nun at such a young age. Yet, we can find oceans of self-help, self-acknowledgement and self-purpose literature and workshops to pursue your dreams whatever they are because every second is precious and you can be hit by a bus tomorrow. If the latter is truly what we promote and believe as a society, why ask the former?
We can't judge why are person does what they do. People are individuals and we have to let them be who they are, not what society says that they should be. I'm not Catholic but I know the significance of people's thoughts and ideas. I could be a nun because this life is not for me but for others who are we to judge.

Having went to a Catholic university myself, I have a great deal of respect for nuns. I'm not religious myself, but I feel there if there is a Heaven, they're the only ones going. lol
No disrespect and they are so beautiful!!!! but I really think their decision from listening to their conversations......is fear of life and this was at Safeway for them not to have to deal with those fears....
No disrespect, Billie, but honestly these women are very well educated and had very many options available to them. They were happily pursuing their careers, but felt that something was missing. The process to become a religious sister takes several years and many soul searching questions asked by vocation directors. Religious communities do not want people who are running away from life but rather those who desire to more fully embrace it.
