at the end of the day, if two artists made up and apologized then we should move on. no one owns a pose and sometimes some poses are so popular that so many artists will draw so there bond to be some similarity
Ichigo just lied out of pity. Clearly they didn`t even try to overlap both pieces when compared them. If you just rotate traced art a little you can see its actually traced.
As an artist, no one owns a pose. Period. There are a finite amount of poses a body can make, and only so many ways it can be drawn even without using a pboto reference. Referencing another person's art is not plagiarism, even if the pose is "original" to that artist. There is bound to be similar poses eventually, and if people continue to cling to that it's not only going to cause more infighting with the online art community, but it's going to hold back a ton of budding artists who don't want to seem like thieves or copycats.
@Ghostieeface Sorry if I didn't word this clearly. 😅 To clarify: I'm not saying that actually making a 1:1 replica of the art you're referencing isn't plagiarism. Obviously it is. But when there are a finite ammount of angles and poses, claiming one specific pose as yours is not only setting yourself up for frustration and disappointment, but it can make the art space intimidating for younger or newer artists. Especially when it's in a space like Twitter. I'm speaking from fifteen years of posting my art online, who has had people ref their work before. Being possessive of poses is wasted energy.

@@Ghostieeface As an artist it isn't! Copying has been a thing for years and plenty of huge artists have always done it! I copy hands all the time, you gonna call the art police on me? Obviously there's a point where it becomes plagiarism but plenty of ideas and themes have been copied a hundred times over, it's just basic art lore that at one point almost everything will be similar to everything else at some point. Best to just not sweat the small stuff.
This reminds me of when I once got commissioned to make an animation based on a different artist's animation that was a bit of a meme at the time. Luckily we decided to ask the original animator if it was ok to make our version of it and they were ok with it.
I think artists should get over the "you stole that pose" phase already. Using references is even used in the industry. Using references for poses is what references are used for as well. People telling others to not use that as a reference often gives other artists that idea of "you shouldn't use references" mentality which isn't good at all for improvement and growth as an artist.
Also I’ve literally seen a real picture of that exact pose on Pinterest for years at this point. So either the original artist referenced that or they imagined that exact pose. Either way this is way out of proportion. Edit: I got to that part of the video, that is the image I was referring to.
Just something significant that I noticed: the race-swapped one at 0:56 has Momo in (what looks to be a hijab) and a short skirt… which wouldn’t ever go together. That’d be considered haram. So, I wonder if that part (Momo as a hijabi) was requested to be included in the piece. I’m surprised that this aspect wasn’t noticed. Although, it’s what was requested. So, whatever. It is what it is.
there's a whole screenshot where the artist asked the person what to do about the short skirt. they had permission to simply add in stockings underneath so they did just that. i'm not entirely sure what's haram and what isn't, but her skin is still mostly covered

It's fine to use someone else's art as a reference if you REFER BACK TO THE ORIGINAL. It's very important to say where it came from if it's referenced to avoid such things.
kinda my hot take but saying "they just a kid" is so tiring. true that you dont have to go to the point of harassing or cyberbully but they should not be immune to accountability either. I believe "they're just a kid" isn't said to take away responsibility from the kid in question But instead there to remind people that they are just a kid. yeah but I think you have to take into account that a lot of things in the commissioned piece were almost the same as the original, and the characters being the exact same probably caused some confusion too. So IMO i'd say that no one is at an immediate fault here

To be fair, the pose that ichijo used as reference and the pose that they drew were pretty different. 1. In the reference, the girl is sort of leaning on the other girl, while the artwork has him squat. 2. The reference has one of the girls arms wrapped around her waist, while the artist has the arm out. 3. The perspective is different. Though the original essense of the pose is the same, there are some qualities that i believe warrants the surprise that ichigo had when they saw the inspired art.
I like how people are crying over Japanese artist making a black character .01% lighter to match their color palette. But making Japanese characters black is crazy work. Apparently Japanese people are not human to them. But black people get a pass to make Japanese characters black. So honestly hope Japanese people just make black characters Japanese instead. Or stop letting Americans walk all over them.
Also if you haven’t paid any attention to the complaints made by people with brown skin, it’s shown that they do not like colorism which actually affects peoples daily lives for being a darker skin tone (discrimination). I say this because a lot of race swap fan edits are blasian (still asian) and people were *still upset. There was even a fan art piece of an anime character with darker skin made by a darker skinned Asian person and (colorist/racist) people were calling the artist all kinds of slurs not even realizing the artist was asian.

From what I read, many (not all) Japanese people don't mind race swapping as a concept, they simply dislike when people make edits over other people's artwork. It doesn't matter how someone can headcanon a black edit to be blasian therefore retaining some of the cultural identity of the original character, the bottom line is that it was made from someone else's artwork. And when Japanese people borrow things from black American culture for their own work, they're at least making their own material with it. They're not stealing something 1:1 or lazily coloring over someone's artwork to call it their own just because they're the ones who edited it. Most japanese artists I've seen on Twitter actually credit other artists.

as someone who hasn’t gotten too many commissions, when i do receive them im tempted to do exactly what they ask. its because as an artist we don’t want to let our commissioners down, so therefore we do what they request. i don’t think the commissioner had any ill intent either. i can see why the original artist would have been upset, but i think the way they handled it was good. i don’t see the big deal about it all anyways considering it was a one time event.
This is so real, my main commissioner wants the art to have the EXACT same pose and details like their references, they've even asked for a full redraw one time because it didn't look like the artwork enough beforehand. I've tried making it to where it's similar to the reference but with my style in it more, even if it changes the angle and such. They just gotta deal with it lol.

it very much is like a redraw of a pose. Not stealing, but the pose and everything is the main thing referred to when creating it. If it lined up line by line then its tracing, but i understand wanting to be credited for being the original BUT i wouldnt put heat out on the artist for being requested for the same pose. Most of the times people refer to poses directly from animes, and there are even artist who specifically create pose references for artists to get creative with (with credit for it as well). As long as the two artists work it out and everything is okay, the community doesnt need to come in and attack anyone, but i get communication gets lost online and hate will travel no matter what

Maybe this is a weird take that I should change, but I feel like you could still work with "do this pose" and only have one ref. For example, I think doing the pose from a different angle would greatly help. Like a slight top view. Maybe add some intense or colored lighting, an interesting color scheme, and of course, altering the pose slightly with exaggeration. Personally, I feel like changing/add enough of that stuff can make more of a deviation from the reference. Sadly that only works if the client likes it and agrees to it, but if they don't then I would say request for more refs.
While it is weird it was a commission so i won't rlly blame the artist tbh... specially that they're young and probably any paid work is exiting to them
Tbf the person was commissioned to make it and had most likely shown the sketch to the commissioner to make sure it was okay. So the commissioner most likely was okay with it if I make any sense.
As an artist it's very blatant that the art was copying the original, which yes you can't 'own' a pose but that doesn't mean it wasn't blatant copying. HOWEVER if it was spread around so much that no one even knew who drew it or thought it was official work then I'd give them a pass. The two already talked it out so it's over and done with.

If you're above the age of 5 you should know that you're copying, I should know I tried that for a contest and I got my butt handed to me (verbally) for it by the judges. And 'heavily reference' is just another softer term for copying, I'm sorry it literally makes no difference. People make mistakes and copying has been a thing in the art world since it's conception, I could name plenty of artists that straight up copied from others my problem is when they refuse to admit it. Even if they thought it was official art they still copied. All those people who do screen redraws? They're copying (I do them to!). But the difference here is that none of this was done with malicious intent and instead out of fun or in this specific case so a wife and husband can have a cool picture. Copying isn't always a bad thing it's how you do it and what your intent was. However it's still better to make your own original ideas.
@@NahNo-xy2kq Yes, I know. Which is why I said no one can own a pose, the difference here is that they didn't take from the photo of the pose they took from the dandadan photo specifically. In the process the artist used the original Dandadan fan image to make theirs, so they copied from it. But that's not a bad thing! Sure it's unoriginal but they didn't mean to do it maliciously so in this case it's such a non issue and the two already have talked it out.
I am still learning to draw, so for now, I am drawing characters from various manga panels. I post the drawings, because I like them, but do state that the drawing is from x vol of y manga. I guess I could specify that it's basically copied, if I were to follow the chart you showed.
Personally, i don't think the artist did anything wrong and this isn't worth sending them harrassment over. I don't think any one artist ever owns a pose, though crediting and "citing" your sources is good practice. The characters ended up looking different enough.

Professional artist with a degree here, no one owns a post, not even if you imagine it.. poses are not infinite.. so what you image thousands of people already did too... that said, heavily referencing is not ok, not enough to point fingers and cancel someone but enough to talk and teach... if you already know that piece exist then you must add your own spin to it
I don't think it needed a call-out post as you said but i think maybe the original artist was frustrated if their art went Viral and has been copied so many places and even ripped onto shirts, so i think it was "the straw that broke the camel's back" situation I do think that with them both being the same series and pose it does get a little similar, like if it was referenced to make a sailor moon commission maybe it wouldn't be as close? I don't know, i think a lot of people get angry over very little and it could just be dealt with in private

This video just made me think about a situation I had. I was friends with a vtuber, we had a falling out, all because of their actions mind you. And I had made them art to use for their channel. Including an art piece and some emotes. And a friend of mine who is in thier discord sent me a screenshot of there they said they'll get the artwork I did re done by someone else because looking at the ones I did 'made her sad' and that made me angry. That's disrespectful isn't it? I know I gave her the artist for free out of friendship but that is just a no no in the art community isn't it?
@mister-canada367 because it reminds her of me. She was a manipulative kinda person, which I didn't realize till she tried it on me, and unfortunately, I have experience with that. Saying something upsetting to me because she "wanted to see how I would react" was not something I want to deal with. She's a 'nice kind comfort streamer' to her community, though so she has to keep that persona up and act upset like it's my fault :/
What is the difference between the idea of tracing being stealing here versus the literal tracing/draw over they did of the art that got them in trouble the first time? Is that one ok because it's official? I mean I know people do screenshot redraws in their style but most of the lines in that one were unchanged.

Kinda tired of the whole "you don't own a pose/a hairstyle/this concept" argument.. It's never about ONE aspect. It's the fact that a lot of the elements are 1to1. The pose, the character's source, the half mask, etc... People online start crusades and "cancel" others for the stupidest thing (aka they go WAY TOO HARD for something that is ultimately a nothingburger), but on the other hand the 16yo artist should take a second to look up the ethics of posting your art online because otherwise this kind of thing will keep happening :\

All these people saying artists don’t own poses and so Ichigo can’t complain… That’s right, but if you copy the pose and draw the same characters (even with different skin/face like in this case where the artist drew real people as the characters) you WILL look like you’re copying. Which you ARE. I believe even if it’s different characters from the same fandom, if people know the original (and it’s very popular) they might see it as copying and as an artist I would personally avoid that but you do you. At the very least draw a different fandom or OCs if you’re going to copy a pose one to one. I don’t think there’s any problem with that. But doing it with the same characters is just recreating a piece in your style which is still copying. I don’t blame the artist in this case since they’re young and didn’t know the original was fanart and not official. But this is for everyone saying artists don’t own poses (which they don’t) and so others can copy their poses (which they can, sure) and shouldn’t face any consequences (which depends on the situation and if they copied more than just the pose and instead took the whole concept of the piece along with the pose.)
Exactly it helps the artist with ideas too. I’ve commissioned and have been commissioned with other’s art as reference. I usually stick to irl photos but sometimes it can’t be helped. I at least try to mix in many references when I’m drawing for myself tho. It’s not as big as a deal as they’re making it but you know twitter users

its a commission for a couple. its personal to them. Maybe an argument could be made about posting it without giving credit. But tbh a pose is not trademarked. The only issue here for me is that its literally the same comp and characters. But the point is to make something more personal to the commissioners.
I don't know if the original artist referenced a cosplayer's pose, and then another artist referenced that artwork. If it was a direct style and concept rip-off, there would be a problem. However, the uniqueness of each artist's work isn't enough to consider this as "stolen" or "heavily influenced" because the two artworks aren't unique enough to be considered stolen, in my opinion.
My view on it is that (when looking at both the original reference image and the original art piece). The pose is still slightly/quite different with huge implications of it! Little details that made the pose unique from the reference. Therefore, I don’t think it was 100 percent okay to copy every single little detail of the pose from the original artwork! But I can still understand it completely. If it was slightly changed up it would have been more okay. Because even the original artwork doesn’t have every single aspect of the referenced image. So I can see why the artist would have been upset/gotten upset!

If you're just recreating it for fun then sure it's fine, most people recognize official art so it's not like their claiming it for themselves. However the Internet is vast and stealing from a small artist vs a large well known company is still different.

The fact it's a pose from a photo completely negates it being "over-referencing"- just because an artist drew a pose from a picture doesn't mean they own it. I see artists go "oh I used that photo reference too!" It's harmless! Beginner artists especially using 1 to 1 photo references is important for your art journey.

I've literally had that real life pic saved in my pinterest for MONTHS lol- Its perfectly cool to be upset that your art is getting reposted and stolen for profit! But when it's clearly not traced, you didn't come up with the pose in the first place, and it's a literal piece of fanart- fans commissioning other artists and using your work as reference/ideas is a completely normal thing. I'd rather my client sends me a fanart that I can track the artist easily than some ai garbage lol I'd be embarrassed to make a callout on someone cause they used the same pinterest reference pose as me 🤦♂
I actually had something similar happen to me, a tattoo artist took one of my pieces and just changed the position of the hands. Everything else was the same, including the character. It was a very sticky situation because it was now on someone's body. I wasn't really happy but I had to forgive and be nice for the person who got the tattoos sake. As I didn't want them to feel bad but yeah and the the tattoo artist did show wipe of them tracing my piece but yeah. It was the best resolution, just tell them it's fine and walk away.
In my personal opinion, 'copying' art is okay only if you add your own elements to it, enough to make it your own while also crediting the artist you heavily referenced from, making sure you let people know you referenced them. It wasn't okay to harass a 16-year-old over a drawing. Not everything is going to be original, and not everyone will have their own ideas. Some like to take inspiration from others, and that's COMPLETELY fine! But to bash on a MINOR for drawing a POSE is insane.
at the end of the day, if two artists made up and apologized then we should move on. no one owns a pose and sometimes some poses are so popular that so many artists will draw so there bond to be some similarity

As an artist, no one owns a pose. Period. There are a finite amount of poses a body can make, and only so many ways it can be drawn even without using a pboto reference. Referencing another person's art is not plagiarism, even if the pose is "original" to that artist. There is bound to be similar poses eventually, and if people continue to cling to that it's not only going to cause more infighting with the online art community, but it's going to hold back a ton of budding artists who don't want to seem like thieves or copycats.

To clarify: I'm not saying that actually making a 1:1 replica of the art you're referencing isn't plagiarism. Obviously it is. But when there are a finite ammount of angles and poses, claiming one specific pose as yours is not only setting yourself up for frustration and disappointment, but it can make the art space intimidating for younger or newer artists. Especially when it's in a space like Twitter.

@@Ghostieeface As an artist it isn't! Copying has been a thing for years and plenty of huge artists have always done it! I copy hands all the time, you gonna call the art police on me? Obviously there's a point where it becomes plagiarism but plenty of ideas and themes have been copied a hundred times over, it's just basic art lore that at one point almost everything will be similar to everything else at some point. Best to just not sweat the small stuff.
This reminds me of when I once got commissioned to make an animation based on a different artist's animation that was a bit of a meme at the time. Luckily we decided to ask the original animator if it was ok to make our version of it and they were ok with it.
I think artists should get over the "you stole that pose" phase already. Using references is even used in the industry. Using references for poses is what references are used for as well. People telling others to not use that as a reference often gives other artists that idea of "you shouldn't use references" mentality which isn't good at all for improvement and growth as an artist.
Also I’ve literally seen a real picture of that exact pose on Pinterest for years at this point. So either the original artist referenced that or they imagined that exact pose. Either way this is way out of proportion.

Just something significant that I noticed: the race-swapped one at 0:56 has Momo in (what looks to be a hijab) and a short skirt… which wouldn’t ever go together. That’d be considered haram. So, I wonder if that part (Momo as a hijabi) was requested to be included in the piece. I’m surprised that this aspect wasn’t noticed. Although, it’s what was requested. So, whatever. It is what it is.
there's a whole screenshot where the artist asked the person what to do about the short skirt. they had permission to simply add in stockings underneath so they did just that. i'm not entirely sure what's haram and what isn't, but her skin is still mostly covered

To be fair, the pose that ichijo used as reference and the pose that they drew were pretty different.
1. In the reference, the girl is sort of leaning on the other girl, while the artwork has him squat.
2. The reference has one of the girls arms wrapped around her waist, while the artist has the arm out.
3. The perspective is different.
Though the original essense of the pose is the same, there are some qualities that i believe warrants the surprise that ichigo had when they saw the inspired art.
I like how people are crying over Japanese artist making a black character .01% lighter to match their color palette. But making Japanese characters black is crazy work. Apparently Japanese people are not human to them. But black people get a pass to make Japanese characters black. So honestly hope Japanese people just make black characters Japanese instead. Or stop letting Americans walk all over them.
Japanese can participate or take black American culture in real life and fiction but black Americans can not do raceswap fan edits?
Also if you haven’t paid any attention to the complaints made by people with brown skin, it’s shown that they do not like colorism which actually affects peoples daily lives for being a darker skin tone (discrimination). I say this because a lot of race swap fan edits are blasian (still asian) and people were *still upset. There was even a fan art piece of an anime character with darker skin made by a darker skinned Asian person and (colorist/racist) people were calling the artist all kinds of slurs not even realizing the artist was asian.

From what I read, many (not all) Japanese people don't mind race swapping as a concept, they simply dislike when people make edits over other people's artwork. It doesn't matter how someone can headcanon a black edit to be blasian therefore retaining some of the cultural identity of the original character, the bottom line is that it was made from someone else's artwork.
And when Japanese people borrow things from black American culture for their own work, they're at least making their own material with it. They're not stealing something 1:1 or lazily coloring over someone's artwork to call it their own just because they're the ones who edited it. Most japanese artists I've seen on Twitter actually credit other artists.

as someone who hasn’t gotten too many commissions, when i do receive them im tempted to do exactly what they ask. its because as an artist we don’t want to let our commissioners down, so therefore we do what they request. i don’t think the commissioner had any ill intent either. i can see why the original artist would have been upset, but i think the way they handled it was good. i don’t see the big deal about it all anyways considering it was a one time event.

This is so real, my main commissioner wants the art to have the EXACT same pose and details like their references, they've even asked for a full redraw one time because it didn't look like the artwork enough beforehand. I've tried making it to where it's similar to the reference but with my style in it more, even if it changes the angle and such. They just gotta deal with it lol.

If it lined up line by line then its tracing, but i understand wanting to be credited for being the original BUT i wouldnt put heat out on the artist for being requested for the same pose. Most of the times people refer to poses directly from animes, and there are even artist who specifically create pose references for artists to get creative with (with credit for it as well). As long as the two artists work it out and everything is okay, the community doesnt need to come in and attack anyone, but i get communication gets lost online and hate will travel no matter what

Maybe this is a weird take that I should change, but I feel like you could still work with "do this pose" and only have one ref. For example, I think doing the pose from a different angle would greatly help. Like a slight top view. Maybe add some intense or colored lighting, an interesting color scheme, and of course, altering the pose slightly with exaggeration.
Personally, I feel like changing/add enough of that stuff can make more of a deviation from the reference. Sadly that only works if the client likes it and agrees to it, but if they don't then I would say request for more refs.

As an artist it's very blatant that the art was copying the original, which yes you can't 'own' a pose but that doesn't mean it wasn't blatant copying. HOWEVER if it was spread around so much that no one even knew who drew it or thought it was official work then I'd give them a pass. The two already talked it out so it's over and done with.

If you're above the age of 5 you should know that you're copying, I should know I tried that for a contest and I got my butt handed to me (verbally) for it by the judges. And 'heavily reference' is just another softer term for copying, I'm sorry it literally makes no difference. People make mistakes and copying has been a thing in the art world since it's conception, I could name plenty of artists that straight up copied from others my problem is when they refuse to admit it.
Even if they thought it was official art they still copied. All those people who do screen redraws? They're copying (I do them to!). But the difference here is that none of this was done with malicious intent and instead out of fun or in this specific case so a wife and husband can have a cool picture. Copying isn't always a bad thing it's how you do it and what your intent was. However it's still better to make your own original ideas.

In the process the artist used the original Dandadan fan image to make theirs, so they copied from it. But that's not a bad thing! Sure it's unoriginal but they didn't mean to do it maliciously so in this case it's such a non issue and the two already have talked it out.

Personally, i don't think the artist did anything wrong and this isn't worth sending them harrassment over. I don't think any one artist ever owns a pose, though crediting and "citing" your sources is good practice. The characters ended up looking different enough.

Professional artist with a degree here, no one owns a post, not even if you imagine it.. poses are not infinite.. so what you image thousands of people already did too... that said, heavily referencing is not ok, not enough to point fingers and cancel someone but enough to talk and teach... if you already know that piece exist then you must add your own spin to it

This video just made me think about a situation I had. I was friends with a vtuber, we had a falling out, all because of their actions mind you. And I had made them art to use for their channel. Including an art piece and some emotes. And a friend of mine who is in thier discord sent me a screenshot of there they said they'll get the artwork I did re done by someone else because looking at the ones I did 'made her sad' and that made me angry. That's disrespectful isn't it? I know I gave her the artist for free out of friendship but that is just a no no in the art community isn't it?

It's never about ONE aspect. It's the fact that a lot of the elements are 1to1. The pose, the character's source, the half mask, etc...

That’s right, but if you copy the pose and draw the same characters (even with different skin/face like in this case where the artist drew real people as the characters) you WILL look like you’re copying. Which you ARE. I believe even if it’s different characters from the same fandom, if people know the original (and it’s very popular) they might see it as copying and as an artist I would personally avoid that but you do you.
At the very least draw a different fandom or OCs if you’re going to copy a pose one to one. I don’t think there’s any problem with that. But doing it with the same characters is just recreating a piece in your style which is still copying.
I don’t blame the artist in this case since they’re young and didn’t know the original was fanart and not official. But this is for everyone saying artists don’t own poses (which they don’t) and so others can copy their poses (which they can, sure) and shouldn’t face any consequences (which depends on the situation and if they copied more than just the pose and instead took the whole concept of the piece along with the pose.)

Exactly it helps the artist with ideas too. I’ve commissioned and have been commissioned with other’s art as reference. I usually stick to irl photos but sometimes it can’t be helped. I at least try to mix in many references when I’m drawing for myself tho. It’s not as big as a deal as they’re making it but you know twitter users
Yeah, but you have to change at least 20-30% of the original pose if the reference is someone art. That is the universal rules between artists

I love that people like to bring up her age when defending her even though she race swapped Japanese characters because "she doesn't feel included"? She could have just made her own characters instead of doing this shjt twice and she's getting rewarded for it? Insane really.
Also she literally copied a pose, first time was that race swapped pic, second time was this one. It didn't line up perfectly but she didn't even bother to try and change the pose slightly or change the perspective. Ofc the original artist would be upset? its a commission for a couple. its personal to them. Maybe an argument could be made about posting it without giving credit. But tbh a pose is not trademarked. The only issue here for me is that its literally the same comp and characters. But the point is to make something more personal to the commissioners.

I don't know if the original artist referenced a cosplayer's pose, and then another artist referenced that artwork. If it was a direct style and concept rip-off, there would be a problem. However, the uniqueness of each artist's work isn't enough to consider this as "stolen" or "heavily influenced" because the two artworks aren't unique enough to be considered stolen, in my opinion.
My view on it is that (when looking at both the original reference image and the original art piece). The pose is still slightly/quite different with huge implications of it! Little details that made the pose unique from the reference. Therefore, I don’t think it was 100 percent okay to copy every single little detail of the pose from the original artwork! But I can still understand it completely. If it was slightly changed up it would have been more okay. Because even the original artwork doesn’t have every single aspect of the referenced image. So I can see why the artist would have been upset/gotten upset!

If you're just recreating it for fun then sure it's fine, most people recognize official art so it's not like their claiming it for themselves. However the Internet is vast and stealing from a small artist vs a large well known company is still different.

Tracing or not the thing i dislike is when its drawn with a hijab alongside with a skirt and long socks.. yes supposedly long socks/leggings are fine but it must be fully covered the full legs and not show even the curve of the legs

The fact it's a pose from a photo completely negates it being "over-referencing"- just because an artist drew a pose from a picture doesn't mean they own it. I see artists go "oh I used that photo reference too!" It's harmless! Beginner artists especially using 1 to 1 photo references is important for your art journey.

I've literally had that real life pic saved in my pinterest for MONTHS lol- Its perfectly cool to be upset that your art is getting reposted and stolen for profit! But when it's clearly not traced, you didn't come up with the pose in the first place, and it's a literal piece of fanart- fans commissioning other artists and using your work as reference/ideas is a completely normal thing. I'd rather my client sends me a fanart that I can track the artist easily than some ai garbage lol I'd be embarrassed to make a callout on someone cause they used the same pinterest reference pose as me 🤦♂

I actually had something similar happen to me, a tattoo artist took one of my pieces and just changed the position of the hands. Everything else was the same, including the character. It was a very sticky situation because it was now on someone's body.
I wasn't really happy but I had to forgive and be nice for the person who got the tattoos sake. As I didn't want them to feel bad but yeah and the the tattoo artist did show wipe of them tracing my piece but yeah. It was the best resolution, just tell them it's fine and walk away.
In my personal opinion, 'copying' art is okay only if you add your own elements to it, enough to make it your own while also crediting the artist you heavily referenced from, making sure you let people know you referenced them. It wasn't okay to harass a 16-year-old over a drawing. Not everything is going to be original, and not everyone will have their own ideas. Some like to take inspiration from others, and that's COMPLETELY fine! But to bash on a MINOR for drawing a POSE is insane.
