    When Dissidia Arcade was announced in 2015, it led to a lot of excitement within the community. From a visual perspective, it looked fantastic and the prospect of Dissidia arriving on the PS4 was rather alluring.
    When Dissidia NT was announced at E3 2017, everyone was excited to learn more... but it became clear that the experience wasn't quite what was expected. And after NT launched and Square Enix attempted to salvage things, not much improved.
    Now, two years after its release, Square Enix has decided to cease updates for Arcade and NT and it's left a lot of doubt about the future of the franchise.

    All they had to do was give Duodecim gameplay and story with console graphics. 3v3 should have been an option, not a requirement.

      The thing is that both OG Dissidia and 012 were meant to be ALSO 3v3, but they couldn't do it because technical issues.
      The combat more or less is the same in NT but it has two major additions: a rock-paper-scissors system and character balance. It's the rock-paper-scissors system that made 1v1 unviable to be the focus of the game (which was never going to be the case with Nomura around), since it makes characters of one type weak against characters of another type. Of course, EX Modes and Assists were out of the mix because in a game like this, they wouldn't make sense.

    • @HeyyItsDaleVODS

      @@thatoneeco the original dissidias had different character movesets, not predetermined attacks that could not be swappable. I only played the beta of NT when it dropped and I found each character absolutely insufferable to play because they couldnt be customized and could not go out of their archetype. I didnt bother picking up NT on launch or when it went F2P, so if that changed i had no idea.
      I was looking for a console dissidia with 1v1 fights and *optional* 3v3, dedicated move customization/combos and equipment, a myriad of stages, a larger roster, and cheesey but fun crossover story. After Duodecim I dont believe *any* of that is unreasonable to ask for or expect.
      Everything I had seen with NT was nothing but fraught with disappointment.

    Sad. Really sad. I'd count the Dissidia Duodecim as one of my favourite games of all time. It's packed with content, equipment, characters, stories, unlockables, different modes, different ways to fight, and it all felt so customizable and developed. None of what I loved was in NT, and that broke my heart. There's never been a game with so much potential that was squandered so heavily.

      Agreed. Now I've never played Dissidia NT. But from what I've seen it lacked a lot of what made Dissidia distinct.
      I saw flashy moves and jarring movement instead of the interesting, unique attacks and fluid movement. In fact, can you dodge in NT because I didn't notice anything like that other than the occasional air dash to the Side.

      Couldn't have put it better myself. Uninstalled it a week after pre-ordering the special edition with season pass, based on the love i have for duodecim. The visuals and gameplay are stunning in NT but it really is just a glittery screen hiding an absolutely hollow and empty experience, compared to the previous two being so utterly jam packed with wonderful interesting content. Still got my Vita with duodecim on it, as it still puts the experience of NT to complete shame.

Online was always lagging for me. Plus over reliance on air dashes was aweful for me. I dont want these characters flying. I wanted the wall runs, grinding rails and limited dashes of the psp ones. They felt so awesome and cinematic like the fights of advent children. Psp remasters would have been so much better.

    Dissidia NT had a lot of potential. But being an "Arcade game" was kinda what killed it in terms of home consoles viability. Duodecim had a lot of side content and customization, which made the replay value gigantic.
    As much as the idea of a 3v3 Dissidia sounds good, it was really poorly implemented in practice. Lots of way to cheese. Didn't play good, didn't feel good.

    • @lonewander6772

      The problem is that they didn't add content when they released it for the Home consoles...the 3v3 is a good idea but it should have been an option, and a mode like King of Fighters. Like you said, DNT had a lot of potential...too bad...

    • @SingeScorcher
      @SingeScorcher 3 роки тому +3

      The 3v3 aspect also really crippled character utility. Because they had to make characters fill roles instead of being playable in a variety of ways. I only ever played Duodecim with 2 other people, but the battles we had would be nutty. we'd play the same characters in wildly different ways. Exdeath could be a walking counterattack, or an extremely aggressive berserker. Tidus could be a fast moving blitzer or a mid-range tapper that whittled on your bravery. You never knew out the gate what you were up against. NT everybody has 1 "job" and has to stick to it. Resulting in not only battles becoming predictable, but also characters not feeling like the legends they are.

    • @KirbyGotenksabsorbed
      @KirbyGotenksabsorbed 2 роки тому

      I really wonder what was the point of the 3v3 thing when they did so little to utilize it. Virtually all other team games, and amusingly actual Final Fantasy games themselves, make use of a multitude of roles like tanks/healers/utility/etc, whereas NT limited itself to speed/heavy/shoot (ie. three different flavours of dps) with very little exception.

    • @gbcls
      @gbcls 2 роки тому

      @@KirbyGotenksabsorbed iv only played for 2 rounds of story, shocked at how bare bones it was and gave it back :/
      But in response to your question I want to say I think the 3v3 could've been amazing. When I got it I was thinking of a 3d Marvel vs capcom 1 & 2 style with final fantasy ( my favorite rpgs and fighting games).
      And as you said it could have been amazing if they utilized everyone within their roles... everyone didn't need to fly, and everyone didn't need to be their own "flavor of dps". FF is about strong team building and skill/stat modification.
      I think something like a bruiser Tifa, a healer Yuna with some summon attacks, and Zidanes tricky fighting style on a team could have been amazing and that thought was what attracted me to the game. It just wasn't any of that. They did a bunch of superfluous stuff that could have AUGMENTED what everyone seems to be talking about, but instead took it away making it feel like a total gimmick :/

    Most discussions of the topic tend to derail towards people just being more interested in past entires, but you have tackled the real issues this game faced, essentially poor decisions and console port support.

    Let's be honest here, they made the game into a 3v3 to try and outdo the arcade king that is Gundam VS, who's a 2v2 arena battler. However, they failed to capture the sense of speed and control that Gundam has, instead ending up as a cluttered mess that ultimately boiled down to bad character gimmicks.

I mean, I presume that this Gundam game is very succesful but does it play anything like previous Dissidia games? If not, what made them think swapping game play styles would in any way be succesful, or suited for a console game? Honestly it kinda feels like if they wanted this, it should have remained as an arcade title- it kinda feel like that was the only audience that liked what they were doing with NT.

I still play every now and then but with it just being dropped... i'm saddened, especially with some of the changes that have been made that make it even more difficult to go further up ranked. Although i get what they were trying to do with the team based gameplay and i've been adapting and learning it, the game is also way chaotic and i'd like to see a return to the Duodecim formula. NT can stay it's own original entity i believe, and it should be enjoyed as such. But I hope in the not too distant future they give this series more love, because this wrapped package of nostalgia and history is up there on my favorite things to happen to Final Fantasy.

    I think this has been said a dozen of times already, but the biggest letdown for homeconsoles was probably that the expectations we had were based on the previous dissidia games and not on the arcade thing they did create. The story was not really accessable in a nice way, as you had to farm those crystals, then the missing systems for nice character progression and equip management that was missing. The unlockables felt like it is all just lootboxes and an attempt of a low cashgrab as (if i remember correctly) the ones you could obtain for free were limited. They really should have had a close look on the previous games when deciding on what to put into the console version, as the audience and expectations are vastly different from that of the arcade scene.

    Honestly, it's sad how everything turned out to be. I played the game for one month and felt so frustrated that I couldn't play it anymore. Even with all the good intentions and hard work of the directors and developers, there's no doubt that NT was doomed from the beggining. I mean, the main focus of the game should have been the players of the PSP games, not the esports and new demographic. I can actually understand why they did that, but they made a very risky move and the game suffered from it.
    NT doesn't feel like a Dissidia. It's a shame. One of the worst things I remember when I played it, was the lack of customization for characters. We played those games because they had so many builds, options, weapons, summons and challenges with every single character... It was mindblowing at the time and I still play the PSP games because of that.
    And the story, even though it's not as deep as a Final Fantasy, it is pretty good. Especially with the original, the story makes a lot of sense, at least more sense than NT and Duodecim.
    Overall, I was expecting this to happen, but at the same time, I didn't wanted to happen to one of my favourite fighting games of all time. Hope this is not the end of the spin of and it's just a break to give some space.

It being a team game took a niche and made it more niche and then even MORE niche by focus on esports (hurting appeal to those solo FF fans wary of different genre) and even MORE niche (lol) by being an arena fighter as fighting esport coverage tends to be 70% 2D, 30% 3D and pretty much 0% Arena. It's just so needlessly niche it needlessly hurt themselves.

      Huh, that's an interesting opinion about Lightning in Dissidia. Her character in Dissidia, much like many of the other protagonists, is just a slightly amplified personality of her character from her original game, undergoing an accelerated version of her character arc(s). In some ways I could see that as being an improvement, but in other ways it can also be a downgrade. Either way I like Lightning, I just find it interesting that that is an incarnation of her that sticks out to someone. Unless you were referring to her gameplay, in which case I can kinda see the point, even though her unique mechanic in 012 is a similar one to Lightning Returns.

    • @Spookybluelights
      @Spookybluelights 3 роки тому +1

      @@vindifference No, specifically about her character. And yeah, I do find the condensation of her arc to be a positive. I would argue that they aren't amplified so much as simplified as some things about Lightning are definitely toned down. For instance, she is way less physically abusive towards people that are supposedly on her team.
      I also find the characters she has to bounce off of to get through her character arc to work a lot better to get there because Lighting wears her angst outwardly the most compared to others like Laguna and Yuna or hell, even Kain who is mostly just stoic (that's not a criticism, I think it really works for what they do with him in DD).
      Another reason why she sticks out so much is that while many of the characters Cosmos has summoned to fight for her who do so willingly or at least keep any ulterior motives under the surface, she is openly skeptical and constantly challenges the point of the conflict itself. She wants to see the big picture, not just what's around the corner.
      And when she realizes she's not going to get that, and they will just end up mired in an endless conflict, she reclaims her own agency and goes out with middle fingers up to *everyone* while *still* performing an act of selflessness towards people she grew to care about and I really wish we saw more of that in her main games without having to wade through so much production and late aughts/early 2010's Square Enix bloat.

    It's been almost been a month since the announcement and it feels like a dream (a bad one).
    Dissidia NT (but not the Arcade) was plagued with bad decisions and it sunk both games at once, which was something unexpected since it was always theorized that if Square had to sacrifice one of them to maintain the other it was going to be NT, yet the current situation happened.
    For me it was a really hard blow, specially because another datamine of NT was going on in the shadows, the remaining veterans were almost in our grasp, they were almost ready to be delivered. Zack and Vivi still remained in the data as placeholders, as a hope for them to FINALLY join the console Dissidia roster... but not it'll never happen until a next installment. It's very frustrating, specially for Final Fantasy IX fans who have been waiting for a 3rd rep since Duodecim.
    What holds the future? I'm no oracle so I can't provide any answers, but I do know that 1v1 fans think themselves they've "won" their (imaginary) struggle against this game, but they haven't; in fact, we've all had lost. This game, sadly, was made exclusively for the Japanese and it did well for a long time, in fact it surpassed Duodecim's impact in Japan (which wasn't complicated since the reception of Duodecim didn't even surpass OG Dissidia's) and I don't think that the mentality of putting the Japanese first will die in the next entry of Dissidia, I can even see it being JP exclusive.
    Why? The one and only person who wants Dissidia to at least consider a 1v1 return is Director Kujiraoka, the person responsible from 1v1 in the first place when the original concept of Dissidia couldn't work in the PSP (which, to anyone wondering, this original idea was in fact 3v3). Director Hazama and Tetsuya Nomura are very insisting in the idea that AC/NT is the stepping stone that will define console Dissidias. I can sense your (reader) frustration over this, and I can see why but, at this point in time and looking at what is happening with KH3 and Vs. XIII, what Nomura wants is what Square will do.

    • @treyenma5206
      @treyenma5206 4 роки тому +1

      If AC/NT is the stepping stone that will define future Dissidias, then it's basically a dead franchise globally. 1x1 Fighting games have plenty of problems when it comes to netcode already, make that a 3x3 game and it's a complete disaster. It'll never take off as a major fighting/RPG franchise if they learn nothing from NT.

Personally I'm glad they did put Ardyn in, though it is a shame he's the last. I also that that they should either port Opera Omnia to the next sony console/PC ( as someone who plays the Steam version ) or even remake 012 with the modern graphics with a dedicated story as to why Vayne, Zenos, Noctis, Ardyn etc would be in it and include their own stories for such. Either way, glad their putting the series to a rest and I hope the next title is much much better. Thank you for the video guys.

I played through the story modes of both Dissidia and Duodecim, leveled up each character, learned their skills, and collected/created equipment until each game started repeatedly freezing up to the point of being no longer playable... and I could figure no way to resolve it. When I tried playing NT once at a friend's house on his computer, I found no story mode. I was most familiar playing as characters like Cloud and Firion, but couldn't figure how to access/learn their abilities... and could not figure out how to enter their EX Modes, like Cloud's Omnislash Limit Break. Even worse was that the game was *SLOW*. Playing on-line, characters controlled by other characters seemed to be zooming around just fine, but the character I played took an incredibly long time to respond to any kind of input. I never played NT again after that day.

    Honestly, Square would be complete and utter fools not to make another Dissidia game at some point... The potential is FAR too great for them to just leave the concept to rot, everybody KNOWS how much of a money making machine this concept can be, ESPECIALLY if it's executed properly... which sadly wasn't the case with NT.
    Honestly, all they truly have to do for the sequel is:
    1. Make sure the game is being built from the ground up FOR both CONSOLES and PC, that's where most of your actual fanbase is at, especially so in the west.
    2. Make sure the game is being built as an ACTUAL F2P title from the ground up, forget the weird-ass hybrid NT was, look at what the currently successful F2P titles like Apex Legends and PSO2:NGS are actually doing RIGHT and make your own model accordingly. Capitalize on the fan-service-y aspect of the game to sell stuff in the shop, like alternate costumes.
    3. Make the story mode an actual evolving narrative, with new "Chapters" coming out at somewhat regular intervals. No need for it to be a groundbreaking story, just make it a BIG fan fiction full of fan service for FF fans, because THAT'S what''s gonna sell it to us.
    4. Make the playerbase an integral part of the development cycle, communicate with the constantly and release new content according to recent "trends", if FF7 Remake Part 3 is about to come out, then release a fan favorite character like Zack Fair or Tifa Lockheart along with a new map like Banora Village or Nibelheim.
    NT could've been execute so much better and smarter... but the execution was so sloppy and weird that it killed any chances the game had
