    Hi Julian am thinking to by L22 it is an awesome mic. I have a question the mic is stereo and has 2 XLR output and I would want to send them both to my TLA fat track preamp and after line in to my apollo silver an makeing link channel. Should I switch 2 phantom power in TLA for both XLR cabel.?

    I have the pro tools carbon and have followed all the steps so far but when I go to click the input and set it after creating a stereo audio track the option isn’t lit up , but to set the mic in mono it works and I can hear it

      Yes, absolutely. As long as you have two mic inputs, you're good. In fact, you can use the mic with any pair of preamps: townsendlabs.com/faq/can-i-use-the-microphone-with-any-preamp-i-want/

    Hey Julian! First of great video :) I was wondering if i can connect the Mic into a stereo preamp by Stam Audio first and then go from the stereo preamp outputs into my Apollo Twin USB inputs. Is it possible without getting issues? Thanks in advance!

    • @Townsendlabs
      @Townsendlabs  3 роки тому +2

      Hi there, thanks for the kind word. I don't see any reasons why you should run into any issues. Just make sure you go into the Twin via the line inputs, i.e. via quarter inch rather than XLR. That way you'll bypass the mic pre stage of the Apollo and you don't mess up your gain-staging. Let me know how it works out! - Julian

      Perfect, thanks a lot! Once i got everything set up, i will tell you how it worked out :) Oh and one more question: So when i buy the microphone i will get a voucher to install the Labsphere plugin for my UAD interface, right? So i don't have to buy it additionally for $199 from UAD.
      The only plugins I have to buy (if needed) is the Bill Putnam and Ocean Ways extension, correct? What are the differences tho? Thanks in advance :)

    this will take up both of my inputs on the apollo twin just to record?? Are 2 XLRs absolutely necessary?

    • @Townsendlabs
      @Townsendlabs  3 роки тому

      Hi Kai! Yes, if you want to take advantage of the modeling and all its features you need those two channels. That said, the mic sounds great on its own and if you ever find yourself in a pinch you can most definitely just record one capsule. The folk band Mighty Oaks has been using the mic without any modeling live on stage on their most recent tour across Europe. - Julian

    If you have an Apollo interface nuendo. Do I add the plug-in on the stereo track in nuendo as well? Sorry I know is this is dumb..

    • @Townsendlabs
      @Townsendlabs  3 роки тому

      Not a dumb question at all. If you have the UA Console in Monitor mode (blue LEDs), you need to add the plug-in in Nuendo. But if you have Console in Rec mode (red LEDs), the plug-in settings get printed and you don’t need to run the plug-in in Nuendo. Does that help? - Julian

    so I can't use the mic if I don't have a uad or a mic with gain matching ? I went to yalls site and saw that it's not required I don't know if I should get this mic because I have a little cheap audiobox and it does have two mic inputs but idn if the latency will be extremely bad. Also idn really how to record both inputs in abelton .. Yall should make a vid about using cheap audio interfaces. Could you please help me figure out if I should buy the mic ?

    • @Townsendlabs
      @Townsendlabs  3 роки тому +1

      Sure, absolutely. Julian here, content manager at TL. The Sphere L22 works with any audio interface or preamp as long as you have a pair of input channels. There are workflow benefits to using a UA Apollo or any other audio interface with digital preamp gain controls (such as RME Fireface, Apogee Duet, etc.). The reasons is that we require you to apply the same amount of preamp gain on both channels. That serves as our baseline for the modeling. If you have continuous gain controls, there's a simple routine to match both channels. In Ableton, you would just set up a stereo track with your two inputs. Regarding latency, it really depends on the performance of your system. With a new machine and solid audio driver, many people can run low buffer sizes so you don't have a lot of latency. What's the lowest buffer size you can run?

    i unfortunately have one channel preamp, so can i combine the preamps ? To run one channel on the SPL One and the other on my UAD apollo quad ? is that good ? are there any problems or limitations ? which preamp is recommended by Townsend ? or simply use the UAD apollo as preamp.

    • @Townsendlabs
      @Townsendlabs  5 років тому

      It would probably be best to just use the Apollo preamps, because the workflow will be super easy. You can link the two channels so you only have a single gain control to worry about. Here's a list of recommended preamps although there are probably more that would work well: townsendlabs.com/prelist/

    Hi, I have an RME babyface pro on windows 10 using Pro Tools 12. Am I able to track through the microphone without the plugin on and add it later in case of latency issues? Most artists I know like to record through Auto Tune when writing.

    • @Townsendlabs
      @Townsendlabs  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, absolutely. Our native plug-in itself only adds 0.5 ms of latency and is very light on CPU. But you can certainly track without the modeling and add it later. It was designed to be a great sounding mic just on its own. - Julian

  • @maximboe

    I've got a UAD Apollo interface and also want to record with an outboard compressor. I read somewhere that it's better (for the modeling) to insert outboard gear after in the signal chain. Is this correct or can I record how I usually would? (Mic->Preamp->Compressor->Output).

    • @Townsendlabs
      @Townsendlabs  3 роки тому

      Hi Maxim, you can use outboard compressors but you would need a stereo pair that you can link. If you only have a mono compressor, it would be better to set that one up as hardware insert and send to it from your DAW post the Sphere plug-in. Does that make sense? - Julian

    • @Townsendlabs
      @Townsendlabs  3 роки тому +1

      @@maximboe no you can totally use a colorful stereo preamp and a lot of folks do that all the time. Just stay away from full-blown clipping and make sure you have the same amount of gain on both channel. That's it. Happy tracking!

    • @Townsendlabs
      @Townsendlabs  4 роки тому

    • @Townsendlabs
      @Townsendlabs  6 років тому +1

      Sphere works with any dual-channel phantom powered preamp, including the including the Octa-capture. We do recommend using a digitally controlled preamp, so the gain can be easily matched between channels but it's definitely not necessary. You can find more info here: townsendlabs.com/prelist/

    One question guys: I run the Neve 88rs as my preamp, then comes the Labs22 plugin and then a 1176 comp. Does this work tho with a mono comp? Because it's a stereo track so i don't quite get it. Does the comp just pic the front signal and not the rear?

    • @Townsendlabs
      @Townsendlabs  3 роки тому +1

      Since you're doing this on a stereo linked channel on your Apollo, the compressor will also be a stereo plug-in instance that is linked. UA unfortunately doesn't support stereo-to-mono conversion (yet) so the output of the Sphere plug-in is actually dual-mono with the exact same signal on both channels. - Julian

      There are lots of good options. While Sphere will work with any 48V phantom powered preamp, one that has precision stepped gain is recommended so that it's super easy to set levels. We've published a list of over 250 preamps with that characteristic.
