John, you did a great review of the system. I really appreciate the through explanation of the emu system, as I learned things. I can confirm that the Sonic animated short was actually on the original release. I agree with your final grade and have the same issues with menu, etc. Overall this is a great affordable system that can do quite a bit. They just released xbmc app, which is amazing. I truly believe that microconsoles such as this are future in which we will see more like this.

Just to clear some things up so people get the most accurate info.
    1. The OUYA does support USB sticks and external HDD's in emulators and file browsers, just not in the main dashboard.
    2. Micro USB is only used if you plan on developing or rooting the system
    3. PS1 emulation is a lot better now using a program on the OUYA store called RetroArch, if you don't have a bios its ok as it runs a simulated bios that in my opinion is almost ps1 accurate.

I have an Ouya. Flash drive has always worked, as in it works for thumb drives but bot hard drives, which the ouya team is trying to resolve. still find large amounts of people who who have never heard of it or still think it hasn't been released. Something not mentioned here is that most out of system controllers can pair up with it, as well as you can use phones as controllers depending on the game.

I have an Ouya, and I really enjoy it. The flash drive and PS1 emulator has always worked. The best part is the games I'm able to play with my kids. Now with XBMC and other Android apps the Ouya has really become my go console. I really believe with community support that Ouya will only improve.

seems to be that this caught on well enough for the ouya 2 to be coming out soon, and thats what i reallllllyyyyyy want to see and how we the gamers will be able to exploit its capabilities : ) btw really great review man, dig the channel!

The Ouya does read flash drives, you just need to navigate to it, by going all the way back through the directories then it will be called USBDrive.
Also for the N64 emulator you need to change the software function keys to stop certain things popping up, and some games like Perfect Dark will only work when you change the render plugin a different one.
If you sideload Astro File Manager it makes it a lot easier to sort out your files and saves you using the cloud for transferring :)

The reason why the intro and the soundtrack are different in the android/iOS version of Sonic CD is because it is set to play the Japanese track. You can change the track to the US version in the options part of the menu.

Also the issue with the NDS games lagging is most likely due to the emulator software as well. The distinction between the Ouya and the different emulator software wasnt very clear in the video. The emu software can hopefully be solved with updates while if there was an actual hardware limitation we'll be in trouble.

John, sometime a reboot will cause the console to recognize the usb, also I run Mario DS perfectly (if it runs slow restart the game) To organize your folders you can download a file manager app from the store. A big help is to download the amazon store on the ouya, and then you have access to all the other android apps not available in the store. I've had no problem with download speeds.

i agree that most of the bad press about this system is totally unwarranted, i was bought one as a gift by my son and thought i would hate it, but once i got used to it i really love it.
but some things to mention, dont try to use it out of the box update it fully first my touchpad was totally unusable till its second update, and get a better controller, the stock one is like marmite you will either love it or hate it, if you hate it use either xbox360 or ps3, others work too i have one of those android joypads and its great on the ouya.
the open source aspect is great for tinkerers, and i really like sideloading and xmbc.

I think it was a fair review. I really like my Ouya for the price, but we can't ignore the flaws! Luckily they've been releasing updates pretty regularly, game releases are accelerating and I replaced my home screen (you can customize it pretty easily since it uses Android). Much better experience over time.

  • @OldSchoolNYCGamer

I hate to say that even the iOS / Android devices will work better with a bluetooth remote and wouldn't be as much lag but then again it would be nice to see this get more work and better updates.

  • @SitarKnight

I love my Ouya, I do agree with you that they need an update to their dashboard to make it more user friendly and also I do not like having no start and select buttons. Also the insta queu thing sucks as well. Everyday I use it though, the more I fall in love with it. With every new update they release, the system gets better, so I'm excited for the future of the Ouya :)

Also you can use most usb controllers, You can use a nes, snes, things took a long time to download because they place a bandwidth limiter on their servers for each client, and no Ouya is not the only one to do this, sony, microsoft and nintendo all do this aswell. This is to avoid issues trying to use it at all when there is too many clients downloading at once.

i have had my ouya since last Christmas and i must say that after a couple updates and after a few mods, the system is pretty nice for emulation, ill be honest that i didnt get the OUYA to play the games that are made for the system, i bought the OUYA for the fact that it can run most emulators 100% and it could run XBMC really well with hardware acceleration. im using an old spare 500gb external hdd with a powered 7 port usb hub, and my ps3 controller and its a pretty solid experience so far

I love your videos Gamester, but FYI, you CAN load roms on a USB drive and have the Ouya read them. You have to go to where the USB is mounted on the system directory, and you will find it.

The reason the Sonic-CD music didn't sound familiar to you was that it was set to the Japanese soundtrack. You can change it in the options.
While the English soundtrack is familiar, I believe the JPN soundtrack fits the style of the game much better.

  • @floralpoboop

The footage is a little old I can tell as there was several updates to the dashboard. No you do not need a credit card on file to purchase games there are Ouya cards sold at stores such as gamestop and yes you are able to skip that since day 1 unlike what some reviewers lied about just to say something negative to get views. Sonic CD default has the Japanese music enabled by default you can switch the sound track to the USA sound track in the main menu. The ouya can read flash drives...

USB flash drives actually work for mass storage, but the OUYA is very picky about them (out of 6 thumb drives I've tried, only 2 worked).
I also use an USB hub (4 ports, active and w/o psu) to simultaneously connect more USB devices at the same time.

A PC to TV converter just transfers the image (mine does the sound, too) from a PC to a TV. That's what I do with my laptop to play games on my emulator. I didn't even know you could just use a regular HDMI cable. I think the point is that you can also use it on older TVs without HDMI inputs.

It's hard to tell whether or not he knows you can select between the US and Japanese soundtracks of Sonic CD in the main menu. The only music change I've noticed was the removal of lyrics from the Japanese opening and closing songs, probably to avoid paying royalties to the pop group that sang them back in the day. I can't think of any other reason they would do that besides money or an expired contract.

Ain't nothing wrong with using roms of old school games. They're all out of print, hard to find/limited for everyone to try and find a copy of the original games, which can also be charged way above what the msrp had been, or what not for an old classic cartridge. Some who are collectors are fine to get those while others fine to choose roms.

I was going to get one to run a webserver and Samba on but I found out it doesn't have Google Play Store and doesn't multitask... you can only run one app(game) at a time... which compared to a tablet... totally blows chunks. I think that the emulators are fine but "ROMs" or games are illegal if you do not own the legitimate hard copy. The reason bleem and the other one (Virtual Gamestation?) got sued was the fact that they supplied the SPCH1001.bin's that are required to play PS1 games. Now, PS emulators are legal, as long as they don't supply the SPCH1001.bin

It's half and half. You get better speed and whatever on a PC but the drawback is a 19" or whatever picture which whatever the size of the monitor is smaller than a TV these days and Ouya has the TV mode to be able to play it big and be in the zone of the game more which is a different experience compared to a monitor.

Gamester, if it wasn't for the ability to move it around, does the console have anything that connecting your home PC to the TV couldn't do? Seems to me it's 100 dollars for something that is not as good, not as powerful, not as versatile as my home PC.

Do the system emulators come standard on the system, minus the games?
