I remember seeing this episode and about half way through was thinking "Where's the case? They're not investigating anything!" Then I realized the whole thing would be like that. One of favorite episodes.
Sometimes, when an episode diverts from the usual formula like that, it means that a writer has a good idea. Not always, but it can create some of the best episodes.
For example, two of my favourite episodes of MASH are the one where its a news documentary about the 4077th, and the one where its entirely from the first-person view of a patient.
The kid with the the Tracheotomy? @@draco84oz
Hands down the best episode of the show. The only complete character driven episode of the entire series and it’s one of my favorite episodes of tv ever. Perfect casting for briscoe’s daughter. She has such a similar face to him.
Right? I was thinking the same thing!!
It’s funny, so many people say that it’s such a great episode but honestly, I really didn’t like it. I didn’t like that they strayed so far from the format of the show. I don’t mind shows being innovative but this episode didn’t sit well with me. It’s one of my least favourite of the entire series, perhaps even my least favourite, with perhaps the last episode of season 20 being worse.
Kincaid is forever my favorite ADA because of this episode, one of the finest actresses the show ever had, just effortless!
@@Hawkathonbut not everything is about you. Much wiser minds award this ep it’s Emmy and have agreed. That you are so rigid you have to jump on one ep that deviates is not a flex, dude
@@Hawkathon The final episode was filmed before news came that the series would be canceled. The one playing Van Buren said she wouldn’t be returning for the next season.
That ending. No one ever expects it to happen to them.
Matthew 25:13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour."
God bless you.
One of the many reasons why I always expect the worst: it either never happens or it doesn't hurt as bad.
This episode was really a heartbreaker especially the ending when Claire was killed in a car accident.
That was an awful thing to witness. A designated driver killed by a drunk driver. Ironic, ain't it? 😭
And Detective Lennie Briscoe forever blamed himself for her death as he suddenly turned "Clean and Sober".
10:28 😭
Yes, I think she went on to Crossing Jordan
This episode was really full of pain for the main characters. They witness an execution of a criminal and react to it in their own ways over the course of an entire day. The monologue by the lieutenant at the end was powerful.
“It’s not enough, and it’s too much.”
Say what you will about Briscoe, despite all his faults
He really tried his hardest to be a good person
My favorite LO character ever! My dad played poker with him once in Vegas and he told him that his daughter had a major crush on him! (That would be me. I’m the one that was in love with Briscoe!)
he sobers up after this for (i think) most of the series
@@afklolwtfbbq after the season 5 finale he did
After Kincaid gets killed by a drunk driver
@@MultiMackDthat was literally this episode!
Pretty ironic that Lenny being drunk probably saved him that night because a lot of drunk drivers survive because them being drunk relaxes them when they crash.
My dad rolled his blazer 5-7 times while drunk driving with no seatbelt and they told him if he did have the seatbelt on he would died. This is just what I've been told I was a toddler or something.
Lenny’s face at the end just breaks your heart
To recap, McCoy, Kincaid, Briscoe and Curtis witness an execution. Van Buren rightfully declines. At a neighborhood bar,, Mccoy recounts his upbringing by his NYPD father, which was not all sunshine. Curtis, after an early end of his day at the precinct, meets a young grad student who he keeps himself company at her home while his wife calls. Briscoe's lunch with one of the daughters is cordial despite the revelations of his abandoning their family. And as Kincaid tries to make sense of witnessing the execution, she contemplates her life and career visiting her step-dad and visiting with Van Buren.
Despite not dealing with a single case through the episode, Aftershock is the best Law & Order episode.
One of the best episodes ever. Having been in very similar circumstances, it broke my heart for Lenny to have to carry that on his conscience
Well, that's one way to get written out of the show. No one was expecting that twist at the end.
One of the greatest episodes of Law & Order, so great to see the characters behind the scenes, very refreshingly (and completely unforgettable ending).
Is that Jenifer Garner? Also that poor guy at the bar had to listen to two slobbering stories.
Yes
Also, look how young everyone is! This show is part of my life. I watch it everyday somehow. Either SVU, Criminal Intent, even LA version was good. It’s my ringtone on my phone. I’m madly in love with Briscoe, Greene, and so many more. L&O is part of my soul.
Most moving final quote by Jill as Claire: "Lenny, I doubt that your daughter hates you."
I remember being so shocked over that ending.
I remember sitting in stunned silence on that Wednesday night. It's crazy how attached one can get to tv characters. I HATED the way Jill Hennessy was killed off the show. She was ALWAYS my favorite, with Jamie a super close second
5:30. Bone chilling. Knowing her 'rest of her life' is only a matter of hour...
I remember watching this when it first came out. Outstanding TV!!
Wasn’t this also the last time Briscoe ever drank? I feel like I read somewhere he felt so guilty about what happened with Claire that he never drank again
Yup. He never drank after this.
he actually drank again in the "Exiled - A Law & Order Movie" (1998)
@@beratinci4977 there was a MOVIE????? was it like the x files movie where the whole cast can drop F bombs whenever they wanted.

@@beratinci4977i second that
There was a movie?!
As an actor… This is the best performance of the entire series….PERIOD!
One of the most compelling episodes of the series
Still beats me why anyone would willingly witness an execution. I wouldn't even witness my own!
If they did something horrible to you it’s like the ending of a horrible chapter.
@@xxoxEVAxoxx True, but what exactly did he do to the cops/prosecutors other than make them do THEIR JOBS?
@@erikdraven1731 Personally I don’t know much about this episode. I just meant in general lol.
If is a case you work as a lawyer or pd like to make sure he won't hurt anyone anymore, but in this case claire shouldn't be there since she said is just wrong she doesn't like death penalty.
If the guy had it coming, he had it coming.
Aftershock is the greatest episode in the history of lsw and order
Honestly I feel it’s about eye for an eye closure. I can understand it
Any TV show, period. Simply brilliant!
It was such a bummer to see Lenny take a drink
Thanks for this version. Very powerful episode.
Baby Jen Garner!
Being Detective Curtis's side chick.
The episode that broke a million hearts in a million different ways…
Soul crushing episode start to finish.
Odd Jill Hennessy trivia: she married her husband twice, with Rudy Giuliani performing the second ceremony.
This episode gutted me. I think of it often. This show and their actors felt like family to me.
this episode MESSED with me BIG TIME! I don't think I've watched it since it first aired. Claire dying taking Lenny home after him getting drunk was a horrible thing to see. To see Lenny, Ray and Jack basically lose themselves, made for incredible television. Van Buren's monologue at the end, was powerful stuff.
I can relate to what she's felt, I've seen people die up close and personal, it sticks with you for the rest of your life.
When is part two coming out? ❤
❤❤❤
Wasn't that Henry Reagan (Len Cariou) talking with Claire on that campus?
From 1996. Len Cariou was 56!😨 And Jennifer Garner was 19 or 20-something.
Jennifer Garner With him Bedtime❤
Why the loud music cannot hear the actors on the TV show
Claire is an absolutely stunning human being. Besides being drop dead gorgeous, in real life she is talented, intelligent and creative. She gives off vibes of being empathetic snd sincere. If I were a man, she would be my ideal woman!
Too bad she was taken and got killed off
I think so as well. I always did like her successors Jamie and Abby but I never truly appreciated Claire until recently
That line about moral conviction turning into self congratulatory depression may be one of the best descriptors of this current
time in the West.
well the U.S has just been sold to Nazi Israel
Then he says - “You can quit the profession - you just can’t quit the human race.”
Best episode ever!!
Clair’s stepdad is Pop on Blue Bloods.
I thought so, thanks for confirming it
This was a really shocking cap...
Excellent episode. Only thing I didn't like was that it ended with her dead then in season 7 episode 1 they don't even mention her name or discuss what happened. Just a few brief comments about Lenny saying he could have walked past that bar and VanBuren asking Ray if Lenny is going to meetings. No reaction or sadness at all from Jack or Adam. Just on to the next assistant DA Jamie
I would have liked more follow up, too, but in fairness Jack does say he feels guilty for talking Kincaid out of quitting her job before the accident.
I guess Jack was grieving his own way. He was really pissed when he had this case later on, a drunk driver who killed a father and son, and went a little too far to get the guy convicted. Then he got back to his sense. He missed Claire, just didn't show it because he's so focused.
@@bonheura that's true but Lenny was extremely devastated at the end of season 6 when she died but 1st episode of season 7 he's all smiles again. Not sure how much time is supposed to pass between seasons but they got over it real quick. But that's my hangup and I don't have many complaints about this show at all and I binge them all this weekend so...
@@bonheura you are correct! I watched season 8 episode 11 today and they do talk about it a lot more. Jack did go a little nuts 😳
@@arthurbb8937 For what I read the reasoning for that is that the writers werent sure if to kill Kincaid or just Paralize her from the waist down, so they didnt talk about it in detail for that reason.
Hennessy got the Mclean Stevenson treatment. Basically the actor thinks they are to big for the show and want to leave so they get killed off with no hope of return. The writers did amazing here.
Is that why she was written off the show I didn’t know that
@@rachelgarber1423 yes and she gave an interview saying she didn’t want to be typecast.
@@hazeleyees Oh, didn’t know about that, btw, hazel eyes here too
@@rachelgarber1423 Hail!
Rubbish, she had a new series
Talk about a heartbreaking ending
Will this ever be available on streaming? I know there are rights issues, but I wish they'd sort them.
Philo is the only place that shows almost all early seasons from WETV, POP, Sundance and BBC America for some reason. They show marathons several times a week and I just DVR all of them. Peacock only has season 13-22
I watch it in prime tv mexico
They finally got frank sabotka.
No, the sheriff in Bon Temps!
Awe I liked Claire and Poor Lenny 😢
You can quit the profession but you can't quit human race
This is very sad at the end when a car hit them both.
Could I ask that maybe in the future that you release opening clip when tow police officers pull a car over and ask the driver for his licence when one of the officers go to look at the back off he notices something then he see the driver pulls a gun out and was about to shot his partner but the police officer at the back shot the driver dead then open the back of the car and find a body
CROSSING JORDAN!!!! JORDAN CAVANAUGH
This is odd, considering the last person executed in New York State was in 1963.
It's a TV show.
@@TheBatugan77 Although the Feds may be able to execute somebody in New York State, at a federal facility, for a federal crime. But not sure about that, and don't know if they have since 1963.
NY reinstated death penalty for a short time, til it was overturned
Lennie blamed himself for Claire's death... He made himself stay sober for the rest of his life following the car accident at the end of this video. I couldn't imagine carrying around that level of guilt...
The last good episode of the show. Heartbreaking.
Eubbish
WHERE IS THIS ON PEACOCK??!!! THE BEST EPISODE OF LAW & ORDER EVER!!
#BringInTheFirst12
Peacock has only seasons 13 on.
@@julier.1902 Exactly. Which is why I say #BringInTheFirst12
At least Claire lasted 6 seasons. More than the others. Jamie eventually quit the DA office, Borgia also gets killed and the blonde gets fired. Don't remember what happened to Ruberosia
'Don't remember what happened to Ruberosia'
finished the run, but didn't come back for the new reincarnation
Claire was on for four seasons, Rubirosa lasted till the end of the series.

9:22 ...and she hates MY guts.
And I was just thinking how dull this was, jumping around from scene to scene . What a crappy ending !
Cinema verite done right. Altman and Cassavettes bore me to death.

How Ironic can it get? Claire Kincaid driving a drunk Detective Lennie Briscoe home, got T-Boned and killed by A Drunk Driver.
The incident that made Briscoe clean and sober as he forever blamed himself for Kincaid’s death.
what’s jennifer garner doing here?
f that noise

10:25 Matthew 25:13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour."
God bless everyone.
What a waste !
I must be missing something. For me, this was one of the worst episodes of the entire series. However, I must say that a LOT of people hold this episode in very high regard. This is entirely subjective so I totally get that what’s the best episode to me will be different from any other person and that my opinion is very different from a great many people. To me, the episode just doesn’t speak. I don’t like that they strayed so far from the format of the show and dealt with the private lives of the characters. Honestly, I didn’t really care about their upbringing or their family lives. I liked when those aspects were interspersed within a normal episode (ex.: Curtis’ wife’s MS) but showcasing them in a single episode, for me, wasn’t a good call. I’m not sure what everyone sees in this episode and I could very well be missing the point but I consider this a bad episode. Maybe someone can explain it to me.
It's something different and we'll written. Obviously you don't like change and that's okay.
Smart ppl loved it.
