In my experienced opinion this seems like overkill for the size your palms are now and the zone you're in. I'm in the same zone(UT) as you. I haven't protected my trachys ot pindow for awhile now. They're too big. Thanks for the ideas thought. Loved the video.
I've used this method for years and with heat cable & lights I manage to see some good growth. We got hit with a week of -9 to -14 weather a few winters back & they made it.
@@Tiki71 I get thar. The weather east of the rockies in winter seems to have gotten significantly colder while the west keeps getting warner. What are you going to do when they get bigger? A couple of mine are too big to protect. Also those pindos get massive.
Chainsaw carve them.
@@Tiki71 Well let's hope it doesn't come down to that.
I really appreciate that you didn't edit out all the times the bungee came loose. Another great video!
Thank you!
Good secure way to protect palms.
Great tips for winter protection! This hobby takes a lot of work, but it's definitely worth it!
Labor 'o love. Ha! 🤙🌴
You have the best and the real stuff!
Stumbled on your channel looking for a solution to protect palm trees in winter. I live in the Dallas area. We buy tropicals every year just to watch them die. This looks like a good solution to preserve palms. I'm going to watch all your videos as I want ideas on Tiki decor as well. All the best!
Cool! Or should I say, warm, lol. I learn something new here every video! ✌🏼💜🙏🏼💪🏼🌱🌱🌱
Thanks Tab! Isn't UA-cam great? You can learn anything here.
Great job getting on that. I feel stressed now that you’ve started before me. And I’m all the way up in Ontario.
LOL Scott. I just didn't want to be doing it in 30 degree weather. I've got them put to bed now and set on autopilot. I'll see them again in March. Now I can focus on doing some chainsaw carving videos. woo hoo. :)
@@Tiki71 good idea! Subscribe to my channel if you want to watch me cover mine in the next couple of weeks. Probably in 30 degree weather!! Haha
Looking good my friend 👍🏻🌴
Thanks!
How about more details on your dry storage of the bananas, this was my second season for mine and they got Big! How do I share pictures?
I live in cleveland ohio and am going to try this winterization method for my palms. Do you give them any water over the winter ? Or are they fine with none ?
I have 2, aprox 15 ft queen palms. I need something easier than what I'm doing to protect them. I've been wrapping them with moving blankets and its getting harder and harder every year. Especially when I have to unwrap and rewrap every time the temp drops.
Any ideas would be grateful.
Hi..I appreciate your very helpful videos.I have a pindo, washy robusta and filifera and a sabel brazoriensis that I had in pots in a hoophouse this winter.I am planting all in the ground this spring and am planning on boxing this fall.I wondering if my sabel brazoriensis is agreeable to going dark in a box like the washing and pindo.hope you can respond on here..thanks..Kurt Lawrence
I don't have one of those, but I do know my palms get the C9 lighting when it gets cold. I just posted a pic of what they looked like when I unboxed them on the Community tab of my page. 😉🤙🌴
Always enjoy watching your videos. I too use to do the box method but it gets tiring after a few years. This year I’m trying Christmas lights with moving blankets wrapped around the outside. On a thermocouple with a wireless thermostats. Seems easier. Hopefully it works just as good.
Do you remove all the dirt from the banana roots?
Most of it. Thank you for watching!
The moving blanket method works really well with miniature incandescent Xmas lights. Part of the equation too is being realistic about what palms you grow. I've been doing this for decades abs trachys really are your best choice. I've got a 20 year old specimen that's about 18 feet tall. Have not protected at all for years now. Eventually they will get too big. I have found that after they attain some good size they become very cold hardy.
Would i need to wrap a 16 ft canary date palm? I live near Houston Tx and we are expecting a artic blue northern possible at Christmas Eve with snow/ice storm..dont want to loose them
This is going to be a bad one this week. I would.
if you cannot build anything cause you're all thumbs, what would you recommend instead? Anything I can buy at home depot or amazon as a winter shelter?
I have another way to build palm protection here: ua-cam.com/video/ZkVdTPxbkvA/v-deo.html
Time to move to Florida!
In total agreement here! 🌴🍹🗿🦜🤙
Those heating cables seems wimpy are they effective? Guess so since your using them....thanks and well done
Yeah, they're designed for use in soil with radiant heat. I cover with the mulch and then add the burlap layer so that helps hold it. Then I lay the C9's on top of the burlap and wrap up the tree. ;) So far so good.
Just curious.. whats the plan when the washy gets too big for winter protection like this?
Have smaller ones growing to take their place. The old ones that can't be protected will become tiki totems. 😉🗿🤙
@@Tiki71 you can usually hire landscapers to come on tall ladders to protect it. in my area a company specializes in winter protection of palms.
Can you keep the Palm Trees in the boxes for 12 weeks straight?
I did. The lights come on when it gets cold so they get some light.
Just out of curiosity, where did you say this is? Are Jubae hardy?
West Arkansas zone 7b. They are once the get good trunk.
How do the palms do with the lack of light over the winter?
Anytime it gets below 35 degrees F, the C--9 lights come on with a Thermocube. They turn off at 45 degrees. They've made it several seasons this way just fine.
@@Tiki71 How many months can survive like this? What was your longest box period? If I will use a different method of heating, do I need to make a clear top for sunlight?
can you let me now if the palms are still alive after the winter ? by the way ...nice garden
Yes the were each year I used them.
How do they get sunlight ?
The c9 lights that are wrapped around the trunk.
@@Tiki71 that works as sunlight or warmth?
Both.
@@Tiki71 okay
How many months do you cover them like that? How do they look when you uncover them ?
What climate zone are you growing in?
7b NW Arkansas
What zone are you in?
7b Arkansas
Oh good god. How about just planting native plants?
What’s the fun in that? I have a needle palm and a Basjoo banana in northern IL. I preserve the banana by cutting it short and putting it under a rose bush cone in the winter, this will be my first winter with the needle palm and that’s why I’m watching this video. I’m not sure I’m going to go quite this elaborate, probably just a canvas drop cloth over a prop-pole weighted down to form a “tent”.
Did you say Batman? Lol...............
