  • Hi everyone,
    Welcome back to a new Timelapse video.
    This time it's my 'Jubaea chilensis'.
    Also known as 'Chilean wine palm' or 'Chile cocopalm'.
    As the name suggests, this palm comes from Chile.
    It is the most frost-resistant feather palm and this palm also has the thickest trunk of all palms.
    A must-have for every palm lover...😍
    Planted out at the beginning of 2014, so now (2023) already 10 years in open ground @ Belgium. (Zone 8b)
    Enjoy the video and the nice growth of this beautiful Palm.
    Dutch 🇳🇱, German 🇩🇪, French 🇫🇷, Spanish 🇪🇦 and Italian 🇮🇹 subtitles are now also available for this video !😉👍
    Also check my other Timelapse video's... • My Timelapse videos
    Many greetings & fun from Belgium ! 😎

      Ich freue mich, dass es Ihnen wieder gefallen hat und viel Glück und Spaß mit Ihren Exoten. Viele Grüße aus Belgien 🇧🇪👍

    Hi Dimitri! Thank you for sharing. Very insightful to see that even such an old palm suffered from the minus 7°c and spear pulled and thankfully recovered. So really, no protection is a very risky strategy. My own jubaea is perhaps a 3rd or a quarter of the age of yours and was left totally unprotected. The whole center rotted and 3 or 4 new fronds quickly appeared but are very small. Yours with its age and greater robustness seems to have been able to produce new fronds of almost the same size as normal
    Again, remarkable to observe the behaviour. Best wishes for a milder winter 2023/24 and long may you have the energy and time to winter-proof your garden as you do

    • @Dimi.Exotic.Garden
      @Dimi.Exotic.Garden  11 місяців тому +1

      Hi Jerome, Thank you very much 😊👍
      Indeed...unprotected is very risky. But because the leaves are so stiff, I don't want to tie the leaves together because they will be damaged. The palm is also so big, at least 5 meters in diameter & 4.5 meters high, that a box becomes difficult in that location...🙈
      Last winter was just way too wet and constantly high humidity during the frost (wet frost). That is much worse than dry frost like in 2021, which was even lower and yet caused no damage...
      Many palms had spear rot after last winter. Fortunately, my large Jubaea has indeed been restored with almost the same large spears and therefore not weakened too much.
      I have now decided to build a large box for my Jubaea, so that it is protected & dry every winter. This makes it also easier for me to add additional heat in the event of extreme frost. Hopefully your Jubaea will recover quickly too. Good luck & greetings from Belgium 🇧🇪🤜

    Geweldig je jubaea, mijn lievelings palm! Mooi overzicht weer Dimi, ik zie dat je hem al vanaf 2014 in de volle grond heb gezet,
    Zo begrijp ik weer dat ik meer geduld moet hebben wand die van mij staat pas vanaf 2019 in de volle grond.
    Maar wat een mooi overzicht weer super!! Groetjes uit NL.

      Dankjewel Gert. Ja de tijd vliegt, het lijkt voor mij alsof het maar een paar jaar geleden was, maar 2014 is inderdaad alweer 10 jaar geleden 😲🙈
      Die tijdsperiode is ook zowat de minimum die ik neem voor mijn Timelapse video's te maken... zodat het ook een beetje de moeite word 😊
      2019 zeg je, dat wil dus zeggen dat jou Jubaea ondertussen goed gesetteld moet zijn en vanaf nu de groei ook sterk zal versnellen. Dus volgend jaar word leuk voor je 😉👍
      Het gaat ook sneller dan je denkt hoor, zeker als ze volwassen beginnen worden. De speren zitten maar op +-30cm van elkaar, met 5 a 6 stuks tegelijk dus heel dik ook. Kijk naar de foto van mijn rotte speren dit jaar. Dat waren 5 bladeren.
      Jammer van de schade nu en het verloren groei jaar. Maar ik ga vanaf nu toch een hok maken zodat die komende jaren beter beschermd word. Deze wil ik echt niet verliezen, zeker nu die volwassen aan het worden is. Dus weer maar eens op men tanden bijten en hok maken 😉🤷‍♂️
      Het is ook een van mijn favorieten in de tuin, lekker vette Jubaea, wat is er mooier he ? 😍👍
      Erg bedankt voor je leuke reactie weer. Veel succes & plezier met de jouwe ook. Ik zie hem graag ook weer volgend jaar, dus zeker foto's maken 😉
      Groeten Dimi 🤜

      @Dimi.Exotic.Garden  10 місяців тому +1

      Yes, Jubaea is certainly the most cold-resistant of all feather palms. Certainly adult specimens can withstand a lot of dry frost. I think the enormous thickness of the trunk may also have something to do with this. I think it's a real must-have for a palm lover.👍😊

      Yes, these are very large palms. To give you a better estimate...
      Mine is now at least 6 meters in diameter and about 4.5 meters high.
      But small, they grow slowly, so if you plant a small one you still have many years left...😊

    • @PeterEntwistle
      @PeterEntwistle 10 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for the size info, Dimi, very helpful! My garden is only about 8 metres wide, so it would eventually fill most of the garden if planted in the centre. But yeah you are right they are very slow-growing palms, so would take a long time to get that big. Hopefully, by then I would have moved to somewhere with a larger garden 🤞

      Thank you Sebastian👍
      Too bad...that's not so much fun of course.😔 But the good news is that there are still existing leaves that are good, you say.
      That means there is still life in it. Unfortunately, the heart of palm will be severely damaged, but recovery is still possible.
      Keep a close eye on it in the coming weeks, normally this should happen any time now. You can also put a stick in the hole and mark it. You can see from the line whether the stick is coming up...
      I hope with you that your Jubaea will recover. He is now very weakened, so he must now be very well protected. It is best not to give frost this winter. Good luck in advance 🤜

    For chamaerops humilis and jubeae chilensis how many degrees is the minimum temperature that it can tolerate without a cover, at what degrees do its leaves get damaged
    Thank you (Hungary)

    • @Dimi.Exotic.Garden
      @Dimi.Exotic.Garden  5 місяців тому

      Hi Attila, That depends on many different factors. Such as how big is the palm, how healthy is the palm, does the palm also get sun in the winter, is it sheltered or completely open, is it wet frost or dry frost, is there snow or not, is there a lot of ice wind or not? , etc...
      So there are many things that have an influence and can make a difference. But to give you an idea... Chamaerops gets leaf damage from approximately -7° to -8°C. Jubaea gets leaf damage from -9°C approximately...
      But as mentioned, many factors can influence this and cause damage to occur more quickly...
      Hopefully this helps you.👍

      I didn't like that. That's why I didn't want to tie the Jubaea together anymore. And that's why I kept postponing it, only when it got really cold and I had to, then I did it. In other words, I took more and more risks, and the Jubaea remained more and more unprotected in recent years.
      As you can see here in this video, things went wrong in the humid winter of 2022-2023. Last winter 2023-2024 I was determined to build a box again. Unfortunately, due to circumstances I have not yet been able to do so. So last winter it was unprotected again. But I have now wrapped the recovering spears with a heating cable and a fleece bag. The Jubaea survived last winter perfectly without any damage 😁👍
      But I am still determined that I will build a large box for it again, so that the Jubaea has less risk of getting damaged again in the future. With a box around it you have more control and security.
      So to answer your question, if I could go back in time, I would have always built a box over it. So that it was properly dry & sheltered.
      Greetings Dimi 😊

      @@Dimi.Exotic.Garden Thanks for the reply, it does seem like the growing point does not tolerate the combination of moisture + cold, I think if it was dry then the low temperature wouldn't have been a problem as the other leaves remained immaculate. If only there was a way to protect the growing point from rain/snow without having to build the large structure, maybe the leaves tied up and a tarpaulin stuffed at the growing point could be sufficient 😂. I lost a mature Chamaerops in the UK to this same issue of snow/ice remaining at the growing point for days.

      @@xd4564-t5i Yes indeed, you can be sure that moisture is the biggest problem here. In dry conditions, several palm trees can still withstand quite a lot of frost. Unfortunately, the combination of frost and moisture is the worst. And yes, the spears are the most sensitive to this because the new tissue has not yet hardened. You can always see this in the light green color.
      It is indeed quite a job to always build such a structure over it, but that remains the best way of protection. The same reason why we humans live in houses, protection from the weather outside...😊
      Also sorry to hear about you Chamaerops, ice & snow in the growing point and on the leaves is always best removed as quickly as possible. I use a leaf blower for this and sometimes also the air compressor, also using a hairdryer (warm air) to melt snow in the heads of the tree ferns...😁
      All that ice & snow causes a lot of damage. Snow on the ground is a very good insulator, or I also like to see a thick layer of snow on the roofs of my boxes, which insulates very well.
      Oh well... it always makes the passion fun, that challenge. But sometimes we indeed have painful losses, that's nature and the consequences if we take too many risks...🤷‍♂

      Jubaea est en effet très lent comme un petit palmier, donc certainement oui pendant les 15 premières années...
      Mon Jubaea dans la vidéo ci-dessus avait au moins 15 ans lorsque je l'ai planté il y a 10 ans. Ainsi, quand ils grandissent, ils grandissent beaucoup plus vite. 😊👍

      @@eijiroinouye4115 Ouch, that's sad to hear. There's not much you can do. If the heart of the palm is not damaged too badly, the palm will recover. New spears will appear later in the year. In the meantime, it is best to keep the hole dry so that nothing further rot. You can also use antifungal remedies, but that is certainly not a must.
      It's time to be patient now. If the existing leaves remain good, then that is a good sign. Good luck and greetings Dimi 🇧🇪

      @@eijiroinouye4115 Indeed, I was actually surprised too... unprotected is very risky here.
      Many palms had spear pull after last winter. Fortunately, my large Jubaea has been restored with almost the same large spears and therefore not weakened too much.
      I have now decided to build a large box for my Jubaea, even though it is difficult, so that it is protected & dry every winter. This makes it also easier for me to add additional heat in the event of extreme frost.
