I know nothing about chickens, but this reminds me of my grandma. She had chickens and birds pretty much all her life. Whenever a chicken was eggbound (at least I think that's what would happen), she knew just how to massage it so that the egg would come down no problem. Once, my aunt's budgie was eggbound and she was about to take it to the vet and get charged a lot of money. My grandmother took the little budgie, warmed her up and massaged her, within the day there was a small egg in the cage. The budgie survived and lived a long budgie life. Oldschool methods, and no clue how she would do it. Memories of my grandma. Glad to see Fern is doing fine and good to know epsom salt baths work on chickens.

Yep it is very good and painless remedy for a hen that is egg bound. They usually are not happy at first but when they feel relief they relax. i saved one of my hens this way, she was struggling by being egg bound, then three soaks in warm water- I had no epsom salt, it was Saturday afternoon, no drug store in my are is open at that time - so one soak wasn't enough but 3 soaks helped and she lived happily after that. Although I never thought of using that type of bucket with a lid and a hole in the lid, it looks like very good idea.

So one of my hens got eggbound with her first egg and all I had were coconut scented Epsom salts. For a solid 2 weeks after she smelled SO GOOD 😂😂
For everyone asking: I knew she was egg bound because she had the "egg bound wattle" and was making painful moaning noises. She was also barely moving. All the other hens had started laying, so that meant she too was of laying age. I decided to carefully check to see if I could feel a stuck egg (you have to finger the chicken for this lol) and I could feel it. If you're going to try to feel for an egg you have to be super careful to not break the egg! If you can get some Vaseline around the egg that also helps a bit.

Lacy would wrangling the ducklings as a group Matron. She was the second flock matron (inherited from Runner).
Best year she helped raise 18 of 19 ducklings in one year (lost one to dm neighbor cat). Little guy slipped out of the fence with six others. Found all but one. Kept six of 18 when they got older for rotation. Found egg-laying homes for others.

Their body positioning changes: they stand more upright like a penguin, with their neck shortening a little, they walk a little slower and seem like they are a tiny bit lethargic or straining. They do this to help try with gravity and straining all their muscles to push the stuck egg(s) out. They won't sit on the nest like a clicky chicken but rather may be semi standing and visibly straining (sometimes even quietly grunting with each breath/push) and this may be in the nest box box but could also be out in the chicken run/garden not too far away from the rest of the flock (because they try to keep up with the flock as much as they can despite their difficulties). Chickens are extremely good at hiding pain so if you notice behavioural changes like body language changes in how they are walking/standing and energy changes like lethargy, then that's a sign something is needing intervention.
