I know nothing about chickens, but this reminds me of my grandma. She had chickens and birds pretty much all her life. Whenever a chicken was eggbound (at least I think that's what would happen), she knew just how to massage it so that the egg would come down no problem. Once, my aunt's budgie was eggbound and she was about to take it to the vet and get charged a lot of money. My grandmother took the little budgie, warmed her up and massaged her, within the day there was a small egg in the cage. The budgie survived and lived a long budgie life. Oldschool methods, and no clue how she would do it. Memories of my grandma. Glad to see Fern is doing fine and good to know epsom salt baths work on chickens.

Yep it is very good and painless remedy for a hen that is egg bound. They usually are not happy at first but when they feel relief they relax. i saved one of my hens this way, she was struggling by being egg bound, then three soaks in warm water- I had no epsom salt, it was Saturday afternoon, no drug store in my are is open at that time - so one soak wasn't enough but 3 soaks helped and she lived happily after that. Although I never thought of using that type of bucket with a lid and a hole in the lid, it looks like very good idea.

Just wait till you see a prolapsed egg vent. It's crazy. It took awhile in the bath to stuff it all back in so it would stay in. That chicken actually lived several years longer and laid eggs normally after that, surprisingly enough. We thought she'd die.
i wish I knew this when my parakeet was egg bound. i caught it too late but arrived just to see her last moments of anguish. Saddest experience I ever had. Heartbroken.
Some advice for if you need to make more boxes like that: get a soldering iron. You melt instead of cut the hole, and you never need to worry about sharp edges. Just never touch the metal end when it's on, it gets REALLY hot
@@sboz86 She was.the grand matron of the flock. She did for while longer. Had happy groups of ducks. They would lay 10 months of the year as a group rotating. They would take part of mid Nov to mid Jan off. I didn't begrudge them the holidays if they wanted. Someone would sneek a few in the duck yard here there early season. Lacy would wrangling the ducklings as a group Matron. She was the second flock matron (inherited from Runner). Best year she helped raise 18 of 19 ducklings in one year (lost one to dm neighbor cat). Little guy slipped out of the fence with six others. Found all but one. Kept six of 18 when they got older for rotation. Found egg-laying homes for others. They were all Khaki Campbells. Great hardworking, pool swimming, yard running, sunbathing flock. They sure loved their duck house, free range area with ground cover, and mini forest. ":'o)
Their body positioning changes: they stand more upright like a penguin, with their neck shortening a little, they walk a little slower and seem like they are a tiny bit lethargic or straining. They do this to help try with gravity and straining all their muscles to push the stuck egg(s) out. They won't sit on the nest like a clicky chicken but rather may be semi standing and visibly straining (sometimes even quietly grunting with each breath/push) and this may be in the nest box box but could also be out in the chicken run/garden not too far away from the rest of the flock (because they try to keep up with the flock as much as they can despite their difficulties). Chickens are extremely good at hiding pain so if you notice behavioural changes like body language changes in how they are walking/standing and energy changes like lethargy, then that's a sign something is needing intervention.
It's good to know other people love chicken too.We had three who were the core of our household and were total spoiled princesess. Chicken are so fun to be around and have hilarious personalities. Thank you for taking good care of them. ❤

@@peaceloveandlifecan you catch her hatching the egg? Curious as to what that looks like
My family has raised chickens for eggs about 8 years now and I didnt know eggbound hens were a thing! I guess we were just lucky but its good to discover something new. Gonna show my mom this video
Just wait till you see a prolapsed egg vent. It's crazy. It took awhile in the bath to stuff it all back in so it would stay in. That chicken actually lived several years longer and laid eggs normally after that, surprisingly enough. We thought she'd die.
She's used to being handled, so that made the difference. You were even petting her like a loved family member. Nice video!
I love how she just calmly checks things out when youre doing them lol. Shes so cute!
Just like us women we need a lil TLC lil spa treatment ❤
I've had chickens pass away from this! Thank you for showing a way to help them out!
Chicken feels safe and secure with her human while being treated . Shows the love and caring 💕 between them. ❤
I wish I knew this. my sweet table top bantam suffered one night. I didn't know she had a stuck egg . found her next day. I cried almost 3 days
She seemed quite happy and comfortable just love how chill she was
i wish I knew this when my parakeet was egg bound. i caught it too late but arrived just to see her last moments of anguish. Saddest experience I ever had. Heartbroken.
Oh no. I'm so so sorry that happened to your baby!!! 😥
I love people who love and nurture their animals. You're precious. What a lucky chicken.
Thank you so much! 🙏🏼🩷
So glad Fern is doing well now. I'm glad she was comfy in her little water bath. ❤❤❤
Some advice for if you need to make more boxes like that: get a soldering iron. You melt instead of cut the hole, and you never need to worry about sharp edges. Just never touch the metal end when it's on, it gets REALLY hot
A hot glue gun may work if you're in a pinch and need something fast. The metal tip gets very hot!!
I never knew egges could get stuck and what is beautyful how she and her husband carefully and kindly dealing with chicken ❤
Loved your video. Read it with great interest and appreciation. Thanks dear for passing down knowledgeable information.
❤️🌹❤️
So nice of you!
What thoughtful people you are to make her birthing process easier
This also works for ducks. 8 minutes in warm water soak. Lacy, 8 years old, relaxed. Popped right out. Triple yoker.
wow, never seen one of those!
8 years old and STILL laying eggs?! That's crazy!
Hey, im thinking of getting chickens. How do you tell if a chicken is egg bound?
Wish your questions will be answered. Cause I have a same situation
Same here. Anyone?
Your first clue is . . .
You stop finding eggs in her roosting spot.
@@cindypomerleau950i think the person above you answered 😊
It's good to know other people love chicken too.We had three who were the core of our household and were total spoiled princesess. Chicken are so fun to be around and have hilarious personalities. Thank you for taking good care of them. ❤
Fern has good humans ❤
Fern is SUCH A BEAUTY! ❤❤❤
So glad you helped her. I really laughed when I saw the cut out for her head on the lid. 😂😮😊😮😂
😁
She is so chill...yall raised her so lovingly.
Ive lost a budgie to egg binding, i foolishly thought that my birds wouldn't try to mate without nesting materials in their cage, so i didn't separate them. Im glad it worked out well for your lovely lady here!
Oh no! I'm so Sorry to hear that!
Never crossed my mind that this issue existed. Very interesting thing to find out as an animal lover at my age.
Bless you for taking such good care of Fern... you are wonderful parents ♥️ I was so happy to see everything worked out, and she is feeling better now!
Thank you for taking such great care of your creatures! And sharing your knowledge too!
Thanks for all the advice to everyone here! I've never had this happen before, but i know what to do in case it does! I wouldn't want my girls to suffer at all!!
Massage olive oil at the vent as well and congratulations on a successful rescue
Yes! Thank you!
Вентиляционное отверстие ???😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@MUHIDDIN195 yes the vent is that's the reference to the exterior tissue where the eggs an the excrement both come out from separate connective international tissues as we call it
@@MUHIDDIN195 my parakeet got egg bound trying to lay an egg for me which is very rare they usually only breed in groups and usually don't lay without a mate. I was glad we were able to rescue her. Later she escaped her cage when we were out of the house, she figured out how to open the doors but apparently she didn't learn how to swim well enough because she drowned in the fish tank.
@@MUHIDDIN195 chickens usually do lay without a rooster around and rosters are usually used to guard the flock/premise or for reproduction but otherwise are a nuisance except for around dinner time.
If anyone is wondering what eggbound means it’s when a chicken is weak and can’t lay eggs either due to disease or in rare cases lack of nutrients
I looked it up and it says Eggbound means when a hen has an egg stuck in her oviduct. Disease a vitamin deficiency can be a cause.
Thank you that will be helpful into to, I forgot to add that part 😁

And here I was thinking this was just a new way to season the chicken before cooking it.😂😂😂😂
Они за курицей лучше ухаживают чем у нас в роддоме за беремеными😂
Увы. У нас беременных режут и бьют, а сверху матом поливают
Wow I didn't know you could do this. It would of saved my hen 😢
Imagine coming over to their house for dinner and seeing a chicken in a bin filled with water and only her head sticking out 😂🤣
Marinated chicken 😜
@@hadassah3560 😂 lol
Glad to see she’s ok and has such great caretakers! 😊
You are so kind!
Constipation is highly comfortable. If your constipated too long it's an almost certain death.
I'm glad this chicken is doing okay
I usually marinate my chicken AFTER it’s been plucked and quartered 😊
A lady giving a SHOAH testimony said she was in a concentration camp as a young girl. She saw a hen and picked it up and squeezed an egg out of it, put it in her pocket to give to an SS officer as a bribe. Never forgot her story, and always wondering how does one squeeze an egg out of a hen?
Yeah, just like the roller coaster that had the cars empty in the ovens. Seriously, that was a story told by a survivor as well. LOL!
@@sboz86wtf is funny about Nazi death camps plz?
Good on you for helping her!
What a great idea 💡 now I'm inspired thanks for sharing 😀👍
This is very sweet!!!😊 i'm sorry at the beginning I thought she was going to soak to tender the hen to eat her after! What a relief 😅😅😅😅 excuse my english !
Your English is perfect.
That was brilliant . Losing a hen that’s egg bound is heartbreaking…. I’d never have thought of a bath!! Wtg !!! I’m so happy it worked
Thank you for the video an idea of the container. It saved Charcoal our ayam cemani, no way im going back out without a fight with how expensive and sweet she is. Shes the only one that will come running an cuddle me, grubs on had or not.
