This Nostalgiaween could there be Nostalgia Critic reviews of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993), Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein (1999), and Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet the Wolfman (2000)?
It's kinda odd hearing someone say that "Mewtwo" is a name they can't take seriously. Growing up with Pokémon one kinda just automatically connects that name with something powerful, tragic and wise. It's interesting tbh
Did you see one piece? Most of the villains are overpower gods yet they have stupid names like don Quixote doflamingo, big momma, gecko moria, sir crocodile, and so on.
Here’s the thing about the effects. They may not always look convincing, but there is a balance to be struck looking just convincing enough to get invested while still capturing the feel of the original artwork. Honestly, and maybe this is a controversial statement, but Detective Pikachu hits that better than any of Disney’s live action remakes.
The best part of this movie was the Bulbasaur pack. Every bit of lore from the games and show say Bulbasaur is a pack animal. You will never see just ONE Bulbasaur by itself. Me: “They’re moving in herds. They do move in herds.”
Every time I watch a movie where the protagonist has to talk to someone others can’t see/hear, I always think: “pull out your phone and pretend you’re talking on it.” I’m so glad someone finally did that in this movie
I know i'm late but: it's a big city and no one ever stops to stare at people who are talking to themselves in a big city. babbling lunatics are considered normal so i never see the point of having to cover for it at all.
Oh totally. It's dumb and cliched in a lot of places, but god damn it they're the fun dumb cliches and I mean, I don't think it was aiming to be a masterpiece, just something actually enjoyable that understood the fanbase and why they love the series.
@@TehLucario What I actually care more is that it make them realistic in acceptable way, without turning them in either abominations or out of place cartoon characters. Even if it could be better in some places (I absolutely would go with teleportation failure) it also doesn't contradict the lore. I do see it happening somewhere in the universe.
That's kind of the movie as a whole. Seriously, I just love the fact that this movie exists, good and bad. I legit thought it was a prank right up until it was released.
Remember: this is an American life action adaptation of a Japanese video game. History shows this should have been awful three times over but instead the result is "fine" at worst. I personally enjoyed it just fine as a Pokémon fan in my 30s
I think the reason is because Pokemon has been a worldwide phenomenon pretty much since it first released. A lot of people have a deep connection with it, and I wouldn't be surprised if almost everyone working on the movie wanted to do it justice. Compare that to any other video game movie. They either came out at a time when video games were still seen as childish, or the franchises they're based on are nowhere near the popularity of Pokemon. Or both.
And that's coming from a man who sees 2019 as a year of not-so-good movies (with excepts to Joker, Avengers: Endgame, Alita: Battle Angel, Spider-Man: Far from Home, Angry Birds Movie 2, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and this)
SO, my friends and I were watching this in a near empty theater, and when pikachu got hit and was suddenly dying, my friend leaned over and just "Is that because ground is super effective against electric types?" and we just bust out laughing and ruined the moment.
Joe Bruce There’s a fantasy world where seasons are longer and a giant wall protects the world from ice zombies that are going to eventually attack. Meanwhile, the main characters, a big ensemble cast of royal families, heroes, villains and morally grey characters go on separate adventures most having the end goal of being the one on the throne, whilst mostly ignorant of the oncoming threat of ice zombies. Characters get killed, you route for your favorite to survive. Then they ran out of books to adapt and started making shit up, so the last few seasons have terrible writing.
@@IMMINOSUS Can he though? Are you talking about the "First movie"? Because the Anime isn't canon. The only true canon is the video games. Ash Ketchum doesn't exist in the canon. That's all just side story "filler" stuff to the main canon. And Mewtwo being a psychic type being able to wipe memories is fine. I'm sure a lot of psychic types can do that. I'm ok with that. But that doesn't mean he can just merge two beings together. We've never seen that before. This isn't Digimon.
True, but a guy did accidentally end up fused to his Pokémon in the first game due to an experiment gone wrong (you restore him to normal immediately upon meeting him).
Andrew I know your probably right but for all of our sanity’s sakes we’ve gotta hold out hope he does finish it!!! At least winds of wind! ITS BEEN 9 YEARS MARTIN I UNDERSTAND ITS STRESSFUL BUT 9 FUCKING YEARS AND WE STILL CANT GET A SOLID CONFIRMATION DATE COME ON!!!!
Of course it is. Nintendo and the Pokémon Company wouldn't let their precious cash cow franchise be that bad. Sometimes they prioritize the wrong stuff and put out something inferior but it's hard to do worse than a bland remake of something you did somewhere between twenty and thirty years ago.
I think one of the most badass things about this film is how they got a male actor and a female actor to speak in unison in order to get the voice of Mewtwo.
Well when anime becomes real I guess it's to be expected. I would totally live in a Pokemon/ Human city though, find me a Kirlia to befriend or bring into the city with
I dunno, I really liked Pikachu, Sneasel and eevee. The only one i really hated was Jigglypuff - its a balloon. its supposed to be rubbery because it can puff up like 20 times its size. it just wouldn't work with fur
One thing that I think gives this film an edge over other video game movies is that I can 100% believe this takes place in the Pokémon world. The story could’ve been better, but there was never a moment where I doubted I was watching a Pokémon movie.
yea, unlike the games, the world in this movie felt SOLID, pokemons had a believable integration in society, they were spread out like regular animals when not domesticated, and having the backstory of the city being about coexisting was a good excuse to PACK the place with pokemon everywhere. The games leave so much unnaswered like politics, infrastructure, world history, mostly because people don't play the games to give a shit about it.
@@MrKlausbaudelaire For reminder Pokemons aren't animals. They are alien ultraforming drones, coincidentally hacked by humans. And in games Pokemons are everywhere. City politic make only excuse why fights aren't every day events.
As a Pokemon fan: Yeah, you hit the nail on the head. Even for fans, this is just a decent movie that was obviously made just to look neat and be some expensive fan-service, and we're okay with that. It's not a good movie, it's not a bad movie. It's just fine, and some nice eye-candy for fans who've wanted to see this kind of thing for a long time now. I mean, considering it's not Dragonball Evolution, we got lucky.
I will say the tease that Hirsch from Gravity Falls was going to write did hype me up a bit about it but apparently he didn't get to write it at the end and just was an OK film IMO.
Same, I like it fine, what I loved was the pokemon designs they are the perfect mix between real and cartoony. I wish for a even better movie like pokemon rangers: the movie would be awesome
srsly I look at my 10 year old cousin and I'm like: I dont trust this kid with scissors let alone things that shoot lightning steal souls and covered in fire
Honestly, the main character's reason for not getting a pokemon before now could have been that pokemon are just so dangerous. He works in insurance, he has to see the claims! They cause damage to property, other people, and pokemon. It is understandable he doesn't want to deal with all that.
@@TheManBehindTheSlaughter6669 how do you know that hasn't already happened yet? How else do you explain everyone being able to catch a "one of a kind" pokemon, or how characters never seem to need to sleep or eat?
I'm often surprised by how rarely anyone ever mentions it, neither in critiques like this video nor within most in-depth analysis. Namely, there is a comment made in the movie about how Mewtwo was "created" 20 years ago! Incidentally, the 1st animated Pokemon movie involving Mewtwo originally came out (in America via English Dub) in 1999; whereas "Detective Pikachu" released in 2019, precisely 20 years later... ^^^Seems most people miss/overlook that Easter-Egg!
7:00 "Not really being anything spectacular?" These were the best effects I've ever seen in a video game movie. You can see Snubbull's reflection on the TV on the far right at 7:56. Pay attention to Yoshida's hand reflection as he's petting it. RJ Palmer did a beautiful job creating the Pokémon for that world. He was hired because of his realistic Pokémon fan art.
Yeah. They look incredible. The only one that looks kinda fake is Machamp, but it's not on screen for so long so it's not that bad. Even Mr. Mime looks like a real, living creature.
I have to agree as a huge fan I was SUPER impressed with how the pokemon looked. And the fact that they have pokemon from EVERY GENERATION even up to gen 7 which was sun and moon, I super appreciate that too. It would've been so easy to cater to genwunners (those who love gen 1 and 2 and shit on everything else) but no they didn't do that. And my god seeing one of my favorite Pokemon from Gen 5 Braviary on screen even for a short time was amazing. God that bird is majestic AF. And mewtwo looked dope.
The CG can be impressive, but the designs are hideous and they don't mesh at all with the human characters or the live action setting. Some of the Pokemon look good, but most of them look slightly wrong in some way or another. Most of the Pokemon with fur, for example, have fur that looks way too long for their design from the games, and the fur effects in this movie generally don't look good. It also looks fake when every hair on the Pokemon's body looks like it's the same length. It would look better if, say, the hair on Pika's tail was shorter than the hair on the rest of his body.
@@angolin9352 I actually have to disagree. They look a bit odd, but you'd expect pokemon in REAL LIFE with real textures such as scales, and fur and skin to look a bit off. They are MONSTERS after all. In the anime, it's hard to tell what would have fur, and what would have scales with the way the art style is. Aside from the obvious such as snake like pokemon, lizard/dragon like pokemon, or mouse like pokemon such as Arbok, Sandaconda, Charizard, and Pikachu. So you have to translate that in a smart way. It's also great that they FINALLY scaled pokemon TO SIZE because Charizard is barely around the height of his trainer which is canon-Charizard is only 5'5''. Speaking as one who studies animation on the side, I've seen the process of how it's done-and to build something from skeletal level up-as in draw the image, then make a skeleton of it, see how it moves, then render it....it's impressive especially for the budget of this film. COULD the effects be better? Sure. BUT for what they are they look damn good. I think the pokemon that look especially good are Pikachu which makes sense given the amount of time and effort they put into him-even going so far as putting swatches of yellow fur in different real light to make sure rendering he looked as good as possible-it's all about lighting with CGI and realism, then Charizard, and Mewtwo. Bulbasaur also looked cute, and Arcanine looked dope as well.
@Robert Giese well that's just one person's opinion-and with CGI we automatically know it isn't going to REALLY be there as if say with puppeteering. But the CGI in this film looked pretty good for the budget it had. So again as someone who majored in film, and studies animation, I'm not gonna fault them on the CGI here.
In the movie mewtwo killed every scientist in the building and blew it up, then hypnotized a women to serve as a greeter and find more stronger trainers to fight and make his own clone army to take over the world.
If you think that Cubone wearing it's dead mother's skull is creepy Critic check out Gengar's Pokemon Sun Pokedex entry: *Should you feel yourself attacked by a sudden chill, it is evidence of an approaching Gengar. "Let's have a child put this creature that is capable of stealing your soul in a ball and then fight other potentially lethal creatures with it. Perfect!"
A pretty pathetic attempt at cheating the audience if you ask me. It’s like making a Sherlock Holmes movie where the guy called „Professor Moriarty“ is the red herring and has nothing to do with the villain from the original source material.
@@rainpooper7088 Eghm... it isn't first time when that did happen. Rehashing adapted source is actually a bad design, you can change stuff until it is internally consistent.
Ya should look over the Pokédex it’s dark. Cacturne - “If a traveler is going through a desert in the thick of night, Cacturne will follow in a ragtag group. The Pokémon are biding their time, waiting for the traveler to tire and become incapable of moving." Litwick- “While shining a light and pretending to be a guide, it leeches off the life force of any who follow it." Yamask- "Each of them carries a mask that used to be its face when it was human. Sometimes they look at it and cry." Phantump- "According to old tales, these Pokémon are stumps possessed by the spirits of children who died while lost in the forest." Palossand- "Buried beneath the castle are masses of dried-up bones from those whose vitality it has drained." Drifloon-“It is whispered that any child who mistakes Drifloon for a balloon and holds on to it could wind up missing.” Cubone- “Wears the skull of its deceased mother. Its cries echo inside the skull and come out as a sad melody.” Banette- "A doll that became a Pokémon over its grudge from being junked. It seeks the child that disowned it."
pokemon the happy go lucky series with a very dark under belly or pokemon the series that makes attempted murder with icicles down played FREEZEING ME MY ASS BITCH
There's also the ghosts and haunted areas that tend to pop up in the games with some pretty brutal backstories. Like the marowak that was basically beaten to death by team rocket, the little girl and butler that died in the old chateau fire, the ghost type trainers that go insane because they couldn't handle being around ghost types, the teenage girl that was unintentionally killed by darkrai, the damn toddler that was actually taken away by a drifloon in USUM(whether it took her soul after she died, or her body before she died is something I don't know), etc. It's stuff like this that really shows off the untapped potential of the Pokémon games and my nerdiness for these games.
@@timmylong833 Bad troll. Books are great, first season is also good. Later it was fine. Problem was that creators were good in adopting stuff, but when sources run out they simply didn't have balls and skills to pull it off.
@@diggerfan9319 In short: In series famous from being realistic and avoiding heroic genre cliches. People start randomly teleport all over places as creators forget about importance of traveling time, also everyone get random plot armor even if clearly half of them should be dead during siege of the Winterfell. Not to mention absolutely retarded massage about democracy, even if for anyone with common sense it sound like setup to kill of his partners by Tyrion Lanister. When it actually it would make way more sense for Deneris to burn Meereen after all her attempts to reform city fail. And then arrive to desolated Westeros. After everyone die as result of petty power plays. What is actual massage of this franchise. This whole thing is about incompetence of those in power and absolute randomness of history with insignificance of the heritage. Like for reminder Jon Arryn wasn't killed by Lanisters but his own wife, for absolutely dumb reason. Furthermore Lanisters were actually desperate as they gold mines run out the ore, and no one actually cared if Cersei son was legit including the King. Jon Arryn didn't bring charges, because he was fully aware that proves are circumstantial. And that should paralel to how movie end.
I grew up with Pokémon, but never watched the movie in theaters because I didn't want to face disappointment after countless and countless of failures Hollywood has done to bring anime/video games to the big screen. But after watching it at a college campus movie night event, I was genuinely surprised. They actually did something good for once.
The problem, as I see it, is that the people who run movie studios think that video games are stupid. So they either make the film version stupid (MORTAL KOMBAT), or they turn the story "serious" in order to justify its existence (SUPER MARIO BROTHERS). Or, as in the case of this film and SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, they split the difference and make the film both stupid and too serious. Why can't we just have 2-D animated feature-length versions of the Saturday morning cartoon series?
I kinda like it when someone who has no history with Pokemon takes a look at a Pokemon game/movie/comic/whatever. Its pretty interesting to see how different Pokemon look to an outsider.
Sonic wasn't very good either Although Jim Carrey as Dr Robotnic is THE BEST PART OF THE MOVIE just like How The Grinch Stole Christmas which FUCKING SUCKS
Agreed, they both made the characters just cartoonish enough for them to be recognizable from the franchise, yet gave them a minor touch of reality where fans could look at it and say; "Yeah, that's what they would look like in real life.".
@@darknessrising2453 No it's just that Jim Carrey is COMEDIC GOLD Even though he's revealed himself to a MARXIST ASSHOLE he still has THE MIDAS TOUCH for the most part I HATE HORTON HEARS A WHO not just the movie But I HATE Jim Carrey's Horton The Elephant

So the end really was that bad, huh ? 'Don't care. 'Didn't even watch the show anyway 🤭🤷♂️ I know I must be one of the few people on Earth not having even tried to watch the whole series (just 1 or 2 episodes and then I just skipped it)...kind of funny, huh ? EDIT : Almost made me laugh when the fans community burried it themselves eventually...after everyone kept telling me I totally should watch it over and over, they ended up feeling betrayed by itself, so I'm just smiling at the face of this nonsense situation, as if I was unintentionnally right since the beginning for not having watched it all along ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@798jeremy the show was good for the first 5-6 seasons. But here is the problem. 7 seasons built up to a war against the ultimate army of evil, and the whole war itself lasted a total of only 1 episode....and not even final episode, nor the penultimate episode, or even the antepenultimate episode. 3 whole episodes of twiddling thumbs and gratuitous wtf moments of violence and stupidity (not to be confused the gratuitous NUANCED violence in seasons 1-6). But the biggest sin of all is that they spent the entire show developing one of the most complex, nuanced and most interesting characters, taking them from heel to antihero to babyface in such an engaging arc....only to have them regress to the bitchy simp they were in season 1, overnight. Literally overnight. This character was done the dirtiest. And for that, dracaris to the whole series
A great way to sum up Detective Pikachu: "...Hey, this is actually not bad." Considering we started with the Mario Bros and Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat movies, and we're at Sonic the Hedgehog and Detective Pikachu we should glad
@@ewormXD they're both about the same. Cliched and predictable, but funny and enjoyable. I think I might've enjoyed the comedy and story of Sonic a bit more, but Detective Pikachu definitely did better world building. Any screenshot from that is better than any from Sonic.
Pokémon is my childhood, and as a long time fan I can say that this movie was surprisingly fantastic! You can see that the people behind it knew what they were doing and how to please the fans. I was put off by the trailers too btw, I thought that they were making some sort of parody, glad I was wrong..
I mean, it's a noir parody that plays up putting cute monsters against a conspiracy. I don't think you csan do a live action pokemon movie without trying to be a bit parodic, it just doesn't look right when put next to real humans.
Ken Watanabe is capable of making any scenes he's in emotional. I loved that scene in King of the Monsters where Ken goes to touch Godzilla. It's emotional when in reality he's touching a scaly wall
Ryan reynolds: The man who played an immortal badass anti-hero that makes great humor, breaks the 4th wall, and is epic as well as an electric mouse that talks like a 40 yr old man.
I saw the opening cutscene for the game and was immediately offput by the fact that the voice actor for Pikachu sounds nothing like Ryan Reynolds. I call it reverse media syndrome.
I saw it at Walmart the title made me think Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me... But then looking further at the cover "Nope, has nothing to do with that moving on!"
@@Dcool77 I was Tempted to look up the review videos before hand. I had the damndest feeling that it wasn't necessary. the movie itself would probably be just as terrible as is it's advertisement of the movie's existence >Did anyways a few hours later
10:16 It's name is Ludicolo. That's what it is saying. Edit: Also the 'Chemical R' in the movie is most likely a reference to Team Rocket. Just a neat piece of trivia.
It's possible that Harry's Pikachu was meant to be *Tim's.* Judging by the fact he recreated his son's bedroom and Tim had a Pikachu headboard, it might've been his favorite. Harry may have gotten the Pokémon in an effort to better reconcile with his son, but when Tim refused to come live with him, Harry made it his partner instead.
I'd really love to see a segment where he reads some of the darker Pokedex entries and his reaction is basically; "10 YEAR OLDS ARE ALLOWED TO CATCH AND RAISE THESE!?"
@@darknessrising2453 I'd like that too. Or even just have him read a synopsis of X and Y. Pokemon are literally murdered in a war and their life force is used to power a giant machine. I think it's probably the darkest the series has ever gone.
It's so weird hearing the perspective of someone who didn't grow up being taught to respect and fear the name "Mewtwo". As someone who grew up with Pokémon, that name inspires nothing but awe and sorrow, and it's actually really hard to turn off that part of my brain to see how anyone could think the name was silly - pretty much impossible, even! I didn't realize I was THAT hardwired…Like, I'm actually trying here, and there is a rational part of me that realizes that "mew" is the onomatopoeia for "cute kitten noise", but even that, being attached to a Pokémon context, only makes me think of the first mythical, unobtainable mystery Pokémon said to be the ancestor of all life in the world, knowing we're talking Pokémon I just can't overcome that. DAMN IT, NINTENDO, WHAT ELSE HAVE YOU DONE TO MY BRAIN THAT I DIDN'T NOTICE?!
What about Aegislash? Generations of Kings were attended by these Pokemon who used their spectral power to manipulate and control people and Pokemon To me it's scary thinking that a Pokemon can control a head of state and its court.
Given how dark Pokemon can get, I'm surprised Doug hasn't given it a chance sooner. If not the games then just the lore of the Pokemon themselves. He'd probably really like the Pokemon Adventures manga. 8:40 There's a skunk pokemon that makes actual fart noises and it was my sibling's favorite. It's funny because even that one's kind of cute.
Believe it or not, that little line about the Pokémon wearing the skull of a dead relative is actually canonical... some how... the Pokédex makes no sense.
@@Glitche0275 Considering, in the game at least, female Marowak's can lay as many eggs as you want, it makes no sense that every single one of those Cubone's is wearing the skull of their not dead mother
There's some really messed up Pokemon entries. Like a Pokemon called Drifloon that likes to try to kidnap children, there's one that IS the spirit of a child that got lost in the woods, one that is a grudge filled doll that was abandoned by the child that owned it, so on and so forth.
Not forgetting that some pokemon like Haunter, the Litwick evolution line and Duskull are said to drain the life-force from humans and other pokemon. :-/
And of course there's not forgetting the entries of pokemon that are apparently actually really dangerous and murdery like Jellicent, Gourgeist, Cacturne, Hypno, and Gengar.
Honestly, I can understand why so long ago you didn't enjoy Pokemon: The First Movie. I grew up with it so used to love it, but unfortunately 4Kids (the company who dubbed Pokemon) completely changed the message and themes of the film to be "fighting is wrong", which as you pointed out, makes no sense in a franchise all about Pokemon fighting each other. In the original it was much heavier, talking about how neither the original Pokemon or the clones are superior, and also deals with the ethics of cloning.
Hi! I know you probably don't care, but I can help out with some of the pokemon info that you didn't know! And for people who might also be confused. At 3:54 you mentioned loving that Mewtwo's name is super silly because of the 'two' in the name. This is actually because Mewtwo was created by humans! It's a clone of the pokemon Mew. At 5:03 Tim comments on the skull cubone wears. Cubone wears the skull of its dead mother which died to protect it. Yes, all cubones wear the skulls of their mothers, no we don't get it either. At 5:27 Humans in the pokemon universe generally go on a rite of passage called a Journey that they take with a pokemon partner. This is seen as a sign of independence and maturity, despite the young age of the travelers in general. People generally stop their journeys when they achieve a goal or settle in a place that suits them and continue their lives as normal adults with jobs afterwards. At 10:19 That's a Ludicolo. They're just... kinda like that. At 13:14 No pokemon lore, but Buster's absolutely adorable. At 16:40 Those are Loudred, who have relation to sounds and being loud. They can enhance music through their ears, which act like speakers. At 22:13 That's a Ditto, who can transform into anything, but will have trouble transforming its face to match the real deal. At 22:45 Fans didn't really see this coming either, body swapping was a brand new power for Mewtwo in this movie. As someone who loves pokemon, and a huge fan, I want to say thank you for giving this movie a chance. I know it's not your typical thing, and it means a lot to see you give it a try. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
19:04 Clifford: "Mewtwo. Created in a laboratory using dna of the ancient Mew." NC: "Don't push your luck. It only sounds sillier the more you say it." Should we explain that this has been canon since the first game, and that it's much creepier finding the journal entries in an abandoned mansion?
@@wesleyoldham-cartoonsandtv1962 Why not both. After all, it implies that Mew gave live birth to Mewtwo in the games... as in... not from an Egg like every other pokemon ever...
Your comment is just proof that this movie was made by people who have a noticable passion and even understanding of Pokemon. Those are the kind of people who are most qualified to make these kind of movies
Also in the Detective Pikachu game, it's female, so she's probably a she in this movie too. Makes it twice as funny for me, but Ludicolo's already my favorite pokemon anyway.
the moment i saw bill nigh's face i knew he was the villain, without having even seeing the entire video. the video only further confirmed it, because this movie constantly felt like it was sam raimy's spiderman....but in a good way
This movie surprised me in a good way. I wasn't expecting much going in, but it was a good time despite its flaws. I will say that at the start, when the villain talked about wanting humanity to evolve like Pokemon, I got really excited thinking the plot was going to work that in where people actually mutate or something like human evolution. Disappointed they went a more nonsensical route.
To be fair, it is Pokémon. This is a world where eco terrorists nearly caused an apocalypse, but it was stopped cause a Green Dragon basically said “STOP,” and was later captured by a 10-year old

its something called Suspension of Disbelief
The best part of this movie was the Bulbasaur pack. Every bit of lore from the games and show say Bulbasaur is a pack animal. You will never see just ONE Bulbasaur by itself.
Me: “They’re moving in herds. They do move in herds.”
Glad I’m not the only one who said that when they were marching in herds
My heart exploded at that scene as Bulbasaur is my all time favourote
Also the noise they make is ridiculously cute. Unexpected, but cute.
In the anime, they even evolve together!
Every time I watch a movie where the protagonist has to talk to someone others can’t see/hear, I always think: “pull out your phone and pretend you’re talking on it.”
I’m so glad someone finally did that in this movie
I'd stay clear of "Quantum Leap", then ;O)
Carnage recently suggested the same thing.
I know i'm late but: it's a big city and no one ever stops to stare at people who are talking to themselves in a big city. babbling lunatics are considered normal so i never see the point of having to cover for it at all.

Detective Pikachu was alright, it’s not a masterpiece, but it’s one of the few video game based movies done right, even if you despise Pokémon!
Oh totally. It's dumb and cliched in a lot of places, but god damn it they're the fun dumb cliches and I mean, I don't think it was aiming to be a masterpiece, just something actually enjoyable that understood the fanbase and why they love the series.

Detective pikachu and sonic the hedgehog both broke the video game movie curse
@@TehLucario What I actually care more is that it make them realistic in acceptable way, without turning them in either abominations or out of place cartoon characters. SPOILER ALERT:
Given the twist... Both.
That's kind of the movie as a whole. Seriously, I just love the fact that this movie exists, good and bad. I legit thought it was a prank right up until it was released.
Obviously moving it fits the atmosphere and tone. In the theaters there wasn't a dry face. That part was very emotional.
Or both.
Yeah, and for some reason, it's almost a masterpiece when you compare it with Dragon Ball Evolution, weirdly enough...
It was mediocre, the Sonic movie was better

The whole "Fusing" power that Mewtwo has isn't actually a thing in Pokemon.. It's only a thing in this movie.

@@IMMINOSUS Can he though? Are you talking about the "First movie"? Because the Anime isn't canon. The only true canon is the video games.

Some of the fluffier Pokemon didn’t look as cute to me but all of the sins were made up for with that ADORABLE BULBASAUR!!!

Let's say a little prayer for Aipom
I mean, they're certainly adorable, but Lt. Yoshida's Snubble is very cute too, in his own grouchy-looking way~
Idk id prefer Growlith, because fluffy puppy that breathes fire sounds awesome,
I dunno, I really liked Pikachu, Sneasel and eevee.

It’s also a world where the Pet Hospitals are 100% free (except in Po Town)

Honestly, the main character's reason for not getting a pokemon before now could have been that pokemon are just so dangerous. He works in insurance, he has to see the claims! They cause damage to property, other people, and pokemon. It is understandable he doesn't want to deal with all that.
i want that movie now!
The movie was by no means a masterpiece, but it was still one of the very few actually good video game based movies out there.
Just one quick clarification:
The shapeshifter is actually Ditto, and the eyes are a running gag of how he always transforms with "dot eyes".
That's because that specific Ditto sucked ass, unlike his Chad Brothers.
this movie basically confirmed that ditto's could take over the world by changing into humans and slowly replacing us.
that was retconned later, all ditto do that now so it's how you spot a ditto, the eyes
That is only a thing in the anime.

Star Wars fans: first time?
Mine hasn't even started scabbing much less slowed my bleeding
Pokémon: *exists*
Doug: "I'm gonna put some dirt in your eyes"

@@javelinmaster2 Nope, it's Pocket Sand!
Ryan reynolds: The man who played an immortal badass anti-hero that makes great humor, breaks the 4th wall, and is epic as well as an electric mouse that talks like a 40 yr old man.
As a Pokémon movie, this one was incredibly solid and, yes, created with a lot of heart!
It's saying"Ludicolo", it's name. But you are right, it is nonsense.
Yeah, I imagine using their I game cries would have worked better than what amounts to screaming phrases.
@@adrianmcbride1666 that's true but you have to admit that it was hilarious
Yeah and seriousness aside we all know who the femme fatale would be, but she was cut
@@jessicaevans7847 Doesn't help that in the english dub of the anime. The pokemon is voiced with a slight baritone.
The “twist” wasn’t in the show. It was only in the game.
You mean like when Blue gets to the league before Red?
Weirder is the twist doesn't exist in the game and it ended differently for a sequel for the Switch.
I saw the opening cutscene for the game and was immediately offput by the fact that the voice actor for Pikachu sounds nothing like Ryan Reynolds.
I call it reverse media syndrome.
Yeah but he didn't get turned back in the game, and there's a sequel coming.
@@AlemoBavir And he also sounded more like Danny Devito in the game

@@Dcool77 I was Tempted to look up the review videos before hand. I had the damndest feeling that it wasn't necessary. the movie itself would probably be just as terrible as is it's advertisement of the movie's existence >Did anyways a few hours later
I unfortunately saw it when it first came out.
Honestly, The Spy Who dumped me is way better than it has any right to be
It's an adequate spy-comedy with surprisingly well-done action sequences.
10:16 It's name is Ludicolo. That's what it is saying.
Edit: Also the 'Chemical R' in the movie is most likely a reference to Team Rocket. Just a neat piece of trivia.
I really like the song "Double Trouble" from Pikachu's Jukebox.
Now I want to play the game more to figure out if that was the case
That actually makes sense. I'm surprise the videogame hasn't explore that idea further like the movie
When the ditto took off at sunglasses, I'm surprised he went with a James and the Giant Peach reference over Scary Godmother.
I agree. I think he said that because more people know about James and the Giant Peach than Scary Godmother.
I didn’t believe he would actually review it
Same, as a Pokemon fan this was a welcomed surprise.
Ken Watanabe's Pokemon should have totally been a Tyranitar
NGL, the image of a Tyranitar trying to fit in that tiny office cracks me up.
"Let them fight."
Obama joke could have been strong, considering there's a pokemon called Abomasnow
XD wow.
What was the next joke after that
well the current president is essentially a magikarp
There’s also the infamous Brock Obama

20:15 I just realized that the graphics they used to reveal the villain is the same graphic they use for “Who’s That Pokémon?!” from the cartoon
Is this the first time Nostalgia critic's reviewed something Pokémon related since the movie?
Well an actual Pokémon movie review. Critic has referenced the property over the years in other reviews and top 11 lists
I mean, there are so many movies that I don't blame him for not wanting to review them all.
Other than references for jokes and mentioning it in the commercials videos, I think so.

Newgrounds pre-2012 days are the best
5:06 Okay, wow. Can we get a Nostalgia Critic reacts to Pokedex entries?
Pokemon has a lot of messed up stuff. Litwick and Drifloon come to mind.
i hope he saw the dorkly videos of "if pokedex entries were literal"
Or Yamask, Phantump, and Spoink.
What about Aegislash?
Generations of Kings were attended by these Pokemon who used their spectral power to manipulate and control people and Pokemon
To me it's scary thinking that a Pokemon can control a head of state and its court.
Detective Pikachu: The film where everybody want Pikachu to be played by Danny Devito.
I see you at every NC video, congrats.
Can I offer you a pokeball in these trying times?
That would have been so cool.
He would've been too old to be Tim's dad
@Tina Davis Play the game then. It's a different plot though.
Ryan Reynolds is like the ultimate rags to riches story when it comes to actors
Believe it or not, that little line about the Pokémon wearing the skull of a dead relative is actually canonical... some how... the Pokédex makes no sense.
What doesn't make sense? The mother lays the egg, dies, and when the egg hatches they wear the skull of the already decayed mother.
@@Glitche0275 Considering, in the game at least, female Marowak's can lay as many eggs as you want, it makes no sense that every single one of those Cubone's is wearing the skull of their not dead mother
@@slayers4life81 It could be a wild versus captivity thing.
@@Glitche0275 It still doesnt explain the, like, 10 Cubone's hatching from eggs from the single Marowak, all with her skull
@@Glitche0275 Honestly, this is one of the many reasons why I think the pokedex is probably one of the best and worst sources of information in game
@@JaelinBezel And then there's Mimikyu, whose appearance is so scary it can literally kill you.
I never grew up with Pokemon, but even I can see that actual love went into this movie, and that's so rare in stuff nowadays.

Female pikachus have a heart shaped tail, so this one is not female.
And neither is the one in the game.

Im not gonna lie, I only watched the stamps ad because of the cat.

This is a world where eco terrorists nearly caused an apocalypse, but it was stopped cause a Green Dragon basically said “STOP,” and was later captured by a 10-year old
that's one of the only things taken from the game's plot
In the world of Pokemon, it's not really nonsensical. Remember, Bill fused himself with a Clefairy accidentally back in the '90s.
