Thank you so much. Sadly I seen this till at around the 1:15 mark. Good info from then on but I really didn’t want to hear him bragging about his “great” compass for over a minute. Thought he was trying to sell it. “This is a instructional video...... if you don’t have a compass like mine well sir YOU SUCK! It cost 100 bucks and I got it free. Ok here is how you start. First pick up your pos compass like this mmmmmkkk? “ 😂
THANK YOU! Finally someone shows how to find other directions besides north. I've watched so many videos and they only explain up to finding North and then I'm lost. I've been feeling like an idiot trying to figure it out myself.
If you are lost and don't have a compass pay attention to the sun as it crosses the sky and you can figure out N S E W. Once you figure out where north is you only need a clearing and a straight stick and you can determine the approximate time. Stand the stick straight up on the ground face north and once you get practiced at this you can get within a half hour easy. The size of the stick is not matter, a twig 3 or 4 inches is what I used. Learned this during my summers on the beach as a teen on Santa Monica Bay.
Plus, the watch and hand/horixon sky time method is a helpful backup. Blackie Thomas has a video where he used a bottle cap as a 'watch face' in conjunction with the determined hand time. Some of those cheapie metal multi-tool survival wallet cards have that notched navigation hole that looks like a sun which can be used in the same manner (as the bottle cap).
Great video for beginners! This was very helpful for me and my son trying to figure this out. All the other videos I was finding were on another level of complained lol. This was perfect. Thanks!
granted this video could have been 2minutes shorter, but THANK YOU!! This other video i tried watching was 15minutes long and useless. This video was much more helpful and easier to watch/listen too as well.
went through my dads drawer.found a military compass...its been sitting there for 10years...but i never really knew how it works or how to use it...now im on youtube hehe
As you were showing us the Compass, and by the way thank you for the good video. It dawned on me,,, compasses don’t care about one’s own truth. Oprah Winfrey did a big show asking people to tell their truth, not the truth but their truth. People don’t realize that there is only one north, not there north,, but true North. No matter which way you had your red dial West east south etc. it’s still pointed north. Nowadays people say if you’re born with testicles, that doesn’t make you a man. I agree it does not make you a man but it does make you male. Weird how people have their truth these days. Happy trails and thanks for the great video. Luke
Being born with testicles doesn't make you a male. A friend of mine was born with testicles and discovered at VA hospital later that he also had internal female organs. So "he" wasn't actually exclusively a male. Also, you can be born as a chromosomal XY male but if you have androgen insensitivity syndrome, your testosterone converts to estrogen and you'll develop as a female despite your legit chromosomal profile. So your conclusion is erroneous.
Technically there is true north and magnetic north--but I won't let that subtract from your statement haha. I totally agree with you. We live in a time where people have the ability to "create" their own reality. I suppose it's always been possible, but it's so much easier with our online outlets and social media platforms. You can literally search for anything and probably find a page to support your views--regardless of whether or not that view is "accurate" or factual.
I'm missing something. The needle is pointing dead left at the beginning, which tells you north is that way. All the other cardinal points automatically follow from that piece of information. What is the purpose of doing all the stuff afterwards, like lining up the arrow with the mark at the top, and rotating the compass around, only to have the needle still pointing where it was always pointing anyway. What do you learn by doing that that the compass hadn't already told you?
you did not miss a thing...the OP just want to show people how to "correctly" use this compass by aligning the direction you want to go at the top of the compass white line...That is it. You actually do not need to use that white line at all because the north direction is all you need to know to find which direction you should go...
THANK YOU FOR SHARING I never use compass in my life and I am traveling alone, hope the compass will guide me where I am going. THANK YOU AGAIN good video THUMBS UP, take care.
Thanks for this, I've been wanting to know how to use a compass for a long time, your explanation was easy to understand ...now to check your next video
I'm a fairly intelligent person. But for some reason, a compass and how to use one has totally confused me. Don't know why. This is the first compass type video that I understand!!!!! Thank You!
I feel the same way. I had a brain block with this and I have literally watched HUNDREDS of videos. I think it really starts to make more sense on how to use one if one begins with learning about topographic maps 1st, both the map and border (legend/key+) features and information.
Thank you for this video. Every single video I saw before now confused the crap out of me. Most talk about all these different things on the compass and I am usually like what??? Then I am giving up, felt like I was never going learn this. Until now, Honestly I watched this from beginning to end and was like are you f-ing kidding me thats it, that is so easy I feel stupid. So again thank you for solving this that so many others over complicated for no darn reason. One step on how to find north, south, East and west with no hassle.
@@manlyman1393 I think what he means is that, the north where this kinds of compass point to is not the actual north. And it has declination depending on one's region as he says. So you need to consider the declination in finding the actual north. I'm a beginner only I'm not sure also

I was always curious on how compass helps in for example: trying to find your way back home if you're lost in a forest and u only have a compass, you'd probably have better chances tracing your way back honestly.
Look up taking a safety bearing. This should be done before heading into the woods. It's what you can use to backtrack. A safety bearing can be in the direction of where your car is parked or a known road or "handrail" feature on a topo map. It could be your back bearing degree mark depending on how you're facing or your direction of travel. Again, taken BEFORE you start wandering off.

The tutorial assumes you know where you are. If you don't what then? Look for a tutorial on how to use USGS maps to learn land navigation and the real way to use a compass.
Please don’t take this the wrong way, but you can’t follow the red arrow on the inside with the examples you used. You used north and south, pretty basic but you said red. Another way is to line up your north needle and while that is set, set your direction or degrees and move the red arrow on inside to the direction you want to go, but with the red arrow pointing to your desired direction and the floating needle point up north, you will go in whatever direction you select. The video directions will have you making a complete circumnavigable route around the globe.

The mirror on the compass allows you to hold your compass straight to get the beast reading while at the same time allowing you to see if you are following the correct direction. It also doubles as a standard mirror.
Watched the REI video which was confusing as hell but this totally made sense
Thanks for the video.
How does this work if the adjustable dial doesn't have N,S,E,W but just numbers
N=360, E=90, S= 180, W=270
Alpha Centauri: You need to learn what the numbers mean.
So on a compass the RED arrow always points NORTH, and the WHITE arrow always points SOUTH, correct?
splash: Yes....although the North end of the needle may be a different colour (most are either red or orange).
Great video. Have a Question. Does doing it your way, automatically factor in the DECLINAITION no matter were you are on the golbe.
Declinations must be manually factored in no matter what analog compass you use. Some allow you to manually adjust it and set it so you don't need to, like the Suuntos. Why don't they design a compass with an arrow that stays where you put it and the nsew turn depending on which direction you're facing?

I live in the panhandle of Florida when Im in the Gulf and get lost or Fogs rolls in I just go Due North… like he said trust your compass not your feelings!
just adjust the red part of needle to north and u get all the directions it very simple
The tutorial assumes you know where you are. If you don't what then? Look for a tutorial on how to use USGS maps to learn land navigation and the real way to use a compass.
i alr know how but il curious if theres something else that i didnt know
Please don’t take this the wrong way, but you can’t follow the red arrow on the inside with the examples you used.
Love it ❤️thankx
Do they make a simpler to use Compass for dumbies?
thanks for your tutorial.. im your new friend here in yt.
