The reason for finding the direction for something in the distance is to pick a waypoint that you can or need to get to. You find a landmark in your heading, put the compass away until you get there and repeat as needed. Works great along with a topo map.
I was reading a navigation manual at the army surplus store and you are apparently supposed to use it to navigate around and object as well. Hard to explain though, made sense while I was reading it.
I use my compass for basic directions. To make sure I am headed in one direction until I can find a road I recognize that would get me home. I’m an old lady with nothing to do so I drive around the UP a lot in good weather just to see what’s there.
“Survival for the poor” I first off would have to say that the one thing that doesn’t cost money is reading and information. You haven’t the slightest idea of how to properly navigate with a compass. After watching your video I’d be willing to bet that a fourth grade Cub Scout probably has more survival skills than yourself. The idea that you see yourself fit enough to produce “survival” videos is laughable at best and at worst scary. Regardless of someone’s financial means it doesn’t cost anything to do things the knowledgeable and correct way. See, that advice was free.
Friend I am a former U.S Marine infantry squad leader. I don't mean to be unkind but you do not know what you're talking about. Not only did you mispronounce the name of the compass, you did not adequately explain the many uses of a lensatic compass. I suggest you get a good book on how to use a compass before you call yourself teaching others how to use a compass. All compasses are not created equal.
Hey man! I have the exact same compass and you know how it is glow in the dark, theres another use for the magnifying glass. So you know theres the hole with the wire through it. The light will go through that hole and the magnifying glass will refract the light all around the inside to kinda “charge up” all the green areas inside so that you wont get lost at night. Sorry im bad at explaining.
I suspect that the real reason that this video was presented from this guy's coffee table and not outdoors was that he wasn't able to find his way out of his own house. Please do yourself a favour and learn to read a map and navigate with a compass before you set off into any kind of outdoor scenario. It is a skill that one day may make the difference between you coming home and not.
Many commentators have encouraged viewers to learn basic navigation. I would echo that sentiment. You need to learn how to correct for true vs. Magnetic North and how to plot on a map to learn your position.
Wow. It's always good to know at least two land marks and their direction so you can triangulate your position on a map. That way you can set your heading to your destination. It looks like your compass doesn't even allow an adjustment for declination. Get rid of these toys, buy a real one and learn navigation. Don't take it lightly. It can save your life some day.
I've used this compass in reverse engineering to get back to my original destination. It's a great compass. It's not the tool that is not working, but the user.
From what I understand about compasses, all of them are good for finding a general direction, especially on a cloudy day in the middle of nowhere. It's how accurate you need it where the difference lies. But to get to a specific point in a map you need to know before hand where Magnetic North & True North in relation to each other before you even head over to the middle of nowhere. These more complex compasses can help you travel in a straight line (fir the most part) to a specific direction on a map. The lensatic compass in this video is only $5 in Walmart. Though i noticed there are 2 lines marjed on the clear face of the compass. I just wonder why they put two? 🤔
Here's what ya do, go to your local Army surplus store & buy a Map Reading and Land Navigation (FM 21-26) manual. It explains in great detail how your compass in conjunction with a grid map or topographical map works. Or.... Go to your nearest recruiting office and sign up for the Marine Corp. infantry or US Army infantry. This will help you with that compass. ;)
Although useless information, was entertaining, perhaps by this time and juncture he has gotten wise and learn how to use this incredible instrument used for navigation and orientation that shows direction relative to the geographic position or cardinal directions, in a nut shell, that will give you a better idea of where you are and where you want to go without loosing (yourself) direction. Prepare yourself when given instructions to others, you could be encouraging others to be in danger. Good luck in this and other endeavors.
You should look at reallybigmonkey video he begs people to not use those little compass says there garbage and I would have to agree. The lens lensatic compass is great to use with a map if you know 2 terrain features you can shoot a bearing over to one make a little line on your map then over to the other feature make a little line where they cross is where your at on the map.
I tend to use landmarks when I am hiking in unexplored terrain. It is a good idea to know which direction those landmarks are as well as the general direction one is traveling.
I can't believe there are so many people so clueless about compasses. comments like "I can't imagine why I'd need to know the direction to an object", highlights cluelessness. It's called "navigation". To know your position, you need to be able to plot azimuth to two distant objects. where lines cross is your position. BTW, it's lensatic, not lenstatic
Speaking for suburban and city dwellers: I know this stuff because it's my interest. No one teaches this in school. Parents do not teach this. Friends do not teach this. How are they supposed to know? In environments where everything is built on grids and there are signs, it's easy for people to forget that most of the world ain't that way. That being said, it is odd to put out a vid on compasses if you don't know about them.
"To know your position, you need to be able to plot azimuth to two distant objects. where lines cross is your position." That just answered so many more questions I had than this video was able to. Thank you.
I need to add that those tiny button-sized compasses are very inaccurate and unreliable. One should not rely on them. There are very many very good videos on using a compass on UA-cam. This one is surprisingly . . . . of limited value.
Thanks for the effort. I'm sure by now you've seen the error of your ways. Lol. I've been lost in the woods and no compass. It'll never happen again. But, your RIGHT about one thing. A compass is no good if you don't know how to use it.
Well Randy, I listened to this instructor when I got lost when living in Utah, now I live in Poughkeepsie. NY thanks to him. But I'll keep my Lensatic Compass and wear it with my house key chain HA!
This compass has a 5 deg graduation, so 5 deg on a long distance is not accurate enough. The outer graduation is in Mils, 6400, which basically used for measuring distances, object sizes, distance between 2 objects etc...! >>Mils: Another unit of measure, the radian, is used mainly by militaries in artillery, tank, and mortar gunnery. There are 2 PI radians in a circle. PI is a constant of approximately 3.1416. That is 2 * 3.1416, or 6.283 radians, . Divide each radian into 1000 mil-radians and you see there are 6283 mil-radians in a circle, rounded to 6400. Mil-radians are called mils for short. 17.78 mils equal 1 degree.
If you notice, there's also an eye slot at the top of the lid and also a peep hole below it.I lower the lid to set up the alignment of the guide wire and the adjustable indicator so you don't have to adjust it each time. Sometimes I set that line as a return indicator at night. Thanks for the video.
The reason i disliked it was because you were saying um um to much and you were throwing stuff around like you didnt care and if you didnt care then why did you make the video?
You really need to learn why you need to know the directional reading is needed for. A topographic map and such would give you a good indicator on where you are. Once you know the reading of several specific places (mountain, river, ect), you can pin point your location on the map. Anyone who hikes alot should know this information as it is very useful. You could do the same with a regular compass, but not as accurately. And as for a compass, you get what you pay for. Some of the cheap ones on key chains are nowhere near accurate enough to even find North as I have had several pointing somewhere East of North, like over 40° off. Some are right on untill it's been banged around in your pocket with a bunch of other metal objects like keys and coins. Get a good topographic map of your area and learn to use the compass properly.
if your lost in the mountain and you see signs of civilization in the distance wouldnt it be helpfull to know what direction a road or a village is as a pick up point ect ect....
In philosophy, rationality is the epistemological view that "reason as the main source and test of knowledge" or "any view of reason as the source of knowledge or justification."
So how this is how the Millennials have been taught. You should always watch your video before posting. The way we have dummies is dummies teaching them.
If you don't know where you are you can find landmarks and determine their directions from your location and then pinpoint your exact location on a mal. But you need a map that displays the landmarks you chose and probably a calculator if you want to be accurate and in a survival situation you probably won't have most of these items.. just wanted to mention it
The next time you have a thought friend…, let it go. I’ve been watching UA-cam videos since UA-cam was invented. And this one is by far the least useful, least informative, most wildly inaccurate UA-cam video of all time, congratulations.
Wow! Way off. Evidently not a boy scout. Only shows to go you anybody will post anything to prove self-importance even if you're just bullshitting you're way through.
You can not lead where you will not go and you can not teach what you do not know. Fourteen degrees wasn't close seen from across the room. You should look at an orienteering course to get some idea. A lensatic compass course would also be helpful. Every military person that went through military basic training would have to laugh at this video.
you was suppose to drop the top down on the 1/2 tilted bottom section not keep it at a 90 degree, 1 degree off and you are off 2 miles if you ever used it.
You failed to understand the basic function of your Compass! This should of been called, Guide for the poor intellect. Your Compass is a devise that will enable you to navigate with a map and find your way without GPS or Satnav . A very useful skill to have as a backup.
With the magnetic pole shift we have going on .... you can get lost useing a compass. Magnetic north used to be in Canada now it is half way to Siberia. Long trips you will end up off target by a few degrees. Just wait till the poles flip. You will love getting lost with a compass then.
The compass would be great to use as a position marker in a big out situation drawing maps and knowing where enemy camps are when scouting mark there location is very helpful to navigate around other camps
Well said I could not figure out a purpose for this stupid lanzatech compass. I gave mine a little smack with the hammer it was most satisfying I suggest you do the same they are literally 4 Military people that need exact coordinates that's what I believe cheers for the video bro
Great, man. This is precisely what I'd hoped this video would be. I think it would be helpful for reporting plumes of smoke while out hiking. Especially if you're near a known landmark. Tell the ranger you're at Conkle's Hollow and spot a forest fire 90° East, ya' know? Then just estimate how many miles and a helicopter could spot the plume and BAM. You've prevented a massive forest fire. Thank you so much. I'm a visual learner and you totally just taught me how to use this thing. Cheers.
I feel ya . I mean why would you want to know exactly where you are on a map. How far from the water,or town on the map. Or how to use it to get a fairly accurate time of day, using angles,or how tall something is,or distance to something is. Pace count,,,,None of that matters when ooooohhhhh my 3 dollar wallyworld has a sparkie wid it.
Everyone is being a little too hard on the Youngblood You have to talk in his lingo The importance of a compass is when you stash something. You want to be able to find your way back 2 it. Other people will be looking for it But they won't find it. Because you hid a really good. You know where it's at using your compass.
Forget it.. write it off.. it's lost forever.. he'll never see it again.. unless he ties a string from where he started and lets the spool unwind as he goes, it's not even a guarantee he'll find his way back to where he started from.
How come when i put my compass, same in video, next to my cellphone..and use a cellphone compass app...they both read different headings....the engineer one especially is off ..when U move the object..the compass goes wild. WHY!?
Have more than one of anything, you can loose or break it. And having one of those big one will, and can come in handy when you need it. We might not need it now a days, but when we get hurled back into the dark ages we will need to know how far something is away or the degree.
“Man, that was a very educational video, I always wondered how to use those compasses” *checks comments* “Well now I’m more confused than I began with”
Haha. I don't take compasses too seriously either. If it says I'm going east when I leave I kinda need to go west to get back. . Of course if I was going to the North pole I'd probably end up in Russia. That's why towns have names and addresses though right?
I disagree, Charles Adamski, I believe this is serious information, if you know how to use it properly to save your life and perhaps others should you find yourself in a very precarious situation with directions. Granted a sense of humor should be acknowledged but this is serious stuff. But then, according to this ineffective instructor I may concur to just "wet my index finger and aim it to the wind and find my way back", you never know, I may wind up in another part of the US, like Poughkeepsie, NY. Gee, I always want it to get there. HA!
What is the shorter line on the bezel for? It looks like it's on a 45-degree offset from the long line, so it might be for triangulation? I have searched for information for the lensatic (I have one since Boy Scout days) so all I bothered with was the wire sight.
I have no idea. A military compass has a fixed line. Both of the lines on the bezel turn. I suspect one is to assist setting the bearing and the other is rotated over the Magnetic needle to allow you to follow a bearing. I looked at one today at Lee Valley. I was confused. The instructions are no help.
Not to jump on the "u r dum" bandwagon that seems to be going through here, but every compass you own says north is in a different direction. The actual value of a compass is in being reliable, so... you have 3 pieces of trash and one good one.
I've actually been lost in the woods cuz there wasn't a trail. If I had a compass I could have stayed on track in the right direction instead of losing my way trying to get thru the thick ground cover... a 15 minute walk... I was lost for almost 2 hours!
Tip: if you're gonna show people how to use a compass you should first learn to use the compass.
Basic video but might confuse newcomers to basic nav

Wow. I feel dumber now than I did before I watched the video. What did I just see?

Our son is a grunt squad leader now. I taught him the compass basics while hunting. He's supposed to be great at Land/Nav now... Semper Fi
Thank you for your service.
Recommendations on best compass brand/s?
Try Suunto or Silva, both are reliable brands.
I know you must have much more knowledge about a compass then this guy. Thank for the tips.
The compass by which all other compasses are measured is a Cammenga, period.
Hey man! I have the exact same compass and you know how it is glow in the dark, theres another use for the magnifying glass. So you know theres the hole with the wire through it. That was a harsh comment, he was just talking about a compass not climbing Mt Everest.
71 degree or whatever???? I've been lost in the woods metal detecting and that's the ugliest feeling I the world.
Armor Vestrus harsh? Grow a pair. He’s 110% right
Many commentators have encouraged viewers to learn basic navigation. I would echo that sentiment. You need to learn how to correct for true vs. Magnetic North and how to plot on a map to learn your position.
This video should be called how to be a dummie reading a compass.

im a learner and i jus need to understand the basics of how this compass operates and how useful it is??
This is a normal lensatic compass you autistic moron. You don’t need declination STFU.
With all due respect my friend you'll never know when you're going to need a compass such as that ''fancy" lensatic compass and know how to use it.
A compass is a absolute must in the woods a very important tool that you should know how to use.
Bro thanks we had the engineer directional compass but we didn't know how to use it.😂😂😂😂😂😂thanks very much bro🎉
I've used this compass in reverse engineering to get back to my original destination. It's a great compass. It's not the tool that is not working, but the user.
Erase this video and go learn how to really use it before making another video about it.
Bought a dog, came with a compass.
Just remember, the shiny black part at the front always points at the tastiest food source.
Hahahahahhahahahhahahhahahahahhahahahha

You must not do any orienteering. The accuracy you get with this compass serves a big purpose if you have a specific location to get to.
A compass has many uses. Finding your way home when lost is important don't you think?
You should look at reallybigmonkey video he begs people to not use those little compass says there garbage and I would have to agree. after this video I'm sure to get myself lost.........
using a "lensatic compass" like that youll be lost and have search and rescue called to find you.
Thanks for the laughs on this hilarious video!! Redo this video with Gomer Pyle's voice please. Shazam!! Well golly!!
Pretty much the last person I would chose to be the navigation guy on an operation or a general back country trip.
*choose
Wow.Im also former Marine.Sorry to be negitive but more harm than help comes with this vid.
I can't believe there are so many people so clueless about compasses. comments like "I can't imagine why I'd need to know the direction to an object", highlights cluelessness. It's called "navigation".
To know your position, you need to be able to plot azimuth to two distant objects. where lines cross is your position.
BTW, it's lensatic, not lenstatic
no. it's LENSatic, not SENSatic. don't believe me? Google it.
"To know your position, you need to be able to plot azimuth to two distant objects. where lines cross is your position."
That just answered so many more questions I had than this video was able to.
Thank you.
If your going to give information on how to use a compass you should first know how to use a compass.
The magnifying glass on the lensatic compass also can double as a fire starter on sunny days which is why I prefer to carry one in my bug out bag.
😁👍
I need to add that those tiny button-sized compasses are very inaccurate and unreliable. One should not rely on them. There are very many very good videos on using a compass on UA-cam. This one is surprisingly . . . . of limited value.
Hang on.. I think I've got two cents in my other pair of jeans..
"I can't imagine why I'd need to know the direction to an object".... then throw away the compass, you don't need it...
wow, know i know less than the little i knew
Thanks for the effort. I'm sure by now you've seen the error of your ways. Lol. I've been lost in the woods and no compass. It'll never happen again. But, your RIGHT about one thing. A compass is no good if you don't know how to use it.

This was a great refresher, I used to know this but life happened, thankyou for the simple summary.
You can learn nothing from this video, though...
This compass has a 5 deg graduation, so 5 deg on a long distance is not accurate enough.
The outer graduation is in Mils, 6400, which basically used for measuring distances, object sizes, distance between 2 objects etc...!
>>Mils:
Another unit of measure, the radian, is used mainly by militaries in artillery, tank, and mortar gunnery.
*Thank you* 👍👍👍👍
The reason i disliked it was because you were saying um um to much and you were throwing stuff around like you didnt care and if you didnt care then why did you make the video?
New title for your video...Using A Lensatic Compass (BY Dummies)
Im droping a dis like because you are calling us dumb when some of us are kids and want to learn
You really need to learn why you need to know the directional reading is needed for. A topographic map and such would give you a good indicator on where you are. Great parody! A bit of survivalist Comedy to keep from taking ourselves too seriously.
if your lost in the mountain and you see signs of civilization in the distance wouldnt it be helpfull to know what direction a road or a village is as a pick up point ect ect....

Thanks for wasting my time . . Just an idea …. Be better aware of what you assume you know …. Not!
Please save your time (and possibly your life)--pay no heed to this ignorant presentation.
Knowing the Degree is how you communicate positions. It's also accurate enough to calculate distances with triangulation.
you was suppose to drop the top down on the 1/2 tilted bottom section not keep it at a 90 degree, 1 degree off and you are off 2 miles if you ever used it.

Same
Best to find another video if you are looking for informative information regarding the use of this compass.
This guy better stick to the pavement.
7 min. I will never get back. Waste of time and info.
The compass would be great to use as a position marker in a big out situation drawing maps and knowing where enemy camps are when scouting mark there location is very helpful to navigate around other camps
Yep. All those "Enemy Camps". Gotta be on ready. They're everywhere. C'mon.

A $3 compass is better than no compass and believe it or not, they do work...IF you know how to at least semi properly use one. This guy does not.
Not very informative.
I'm think you don't know how yo use it
Hmmm....."71 degrees North East of whatever" doesn't really explain things :-(
Everyone is being a little too hard on the Youngblood
You have to talk in his lingo The importance of a compass is when you stash something. You want to be able to find your way back 2 it.
Other people will be looking for it
But they won't find it. Because you hid a really good. You know where it's at using your compass.
Forget it.. write it off.. it's lost forever.. he'll never see it again.. unless he ties a string from where he started and lets the spool unwind as he goes, it's not even a guarantee he'll find his way back to where he started from.
I don't think this guy could find his ass in a house of mirrors or find his way out of an empty parking lot!
Woooow! I’m glad I’m never going anywhere with you. This info is terrible.
What’s so terrible about it? That’s exactly how you use a lensatic compass.
Do not get lost with this guy.
Wow! I think I just lost IQ points watching this.
How to magnifying glass you can flash the light so at night you can use it
Fail.
I think we are still dummies after watching this. Not sure why yt suggested this search result in the top of the list ? Must be the fancy thumbnail
How come when i put my compass, same in video, next to my cellphone..and use a cellphone compass app...they both read different headings....the engineer one especially is off ..when U move the object..the compass goes wild.
WHY!?
I've had a WW2 compass from my Dad for years and have always wondered how to use it
Glowing compass is useful at nights
Even the manufacturer that made my directional 🧭 screwed the thumb holder/compass closer upside-down 🤷🏻♂️
Have more than one of anything, you can loose or break it. And having one of those big one will, and can come in handy when you need it. We might not need it now a days, but when we get hurled back into the dark ages we will need to know how far something is away or the degree.
Don't you use one of these to orient a map so you can find the proper direction to go with the line of sight on the compass?
I've been hunting for over forty years, I've never been able to completely understand a compass.and never will . I am compass stupid.
And you don’t know how to use a compass either
FYI.. Title change..
How to use a LENSTATIC compass: By A. Dummy (lol)
Hey, hey, hey.. give him some credit.. he knew you could stick your thumb in the loop... lmao.
“Man, that was a very educational video, I always wondered how to use those compasses”
*checks comments*
“Well now I’m more confused than I began with”
he is not lying this is for dummies
Well, if you need to know exactly where you're heading, following a map will require a directional compass.
You tell more about the weather and you do on a compass
HA!
for someone like me who has negative sense of direction a compass is a must LOL
Brian Davis i got one at dicks for 3 dollars.. check out my modular machete vid to see it
What is the shorter line on the bezel for? It looks like it's on a 45-degree offset from the long line, so it might be for triangulation? I have searched for information for the lensatic
(I have one since Boy Scout days) so all I bothered with was the wire sight.
The fella making the video obviously doesn't know how to properly use that compas. Or likely land navigation
Not to jump on the "u r dum" bandwagon that seems to be going through here, but every compass you own says north is in a different direction. The actual value of a compass is in being reliable, so... you have 3 pieces of trash and one good one.
We have the same compass Imagine that...7 years old video! Some technologies don't change much at all eh? No they sure don't. Right on!
I've actually been lost in the woods cuz there wasn't a trail. If I had a compass I could have stayed on track in the right direction instead of losing my way trying to get thru the thick ground cover... a 15 minute walk... I was lost for almost 2 hours!
