- Zinnia's first 'reel' experience with free-flight came with this simple, sheet balsa towline glider. The 26" model is based on this 36" sheet glider by Ron Warring from 1959. The film includes a few details of a new towline winch, using a 20:1 winder. Tutorial on making a similar winch for towline: • Free-Flight Basics #10...

Her retrieval run and smile at the end are priceless.
What a beautiful moment for both of you. She will always remember it. Dad and I built a stick and tissue about 45 years ago on our card table. I'm 50 now. He always flew C/L but I will never forget that little glider covered in purple tissue as she will remember this forever. Thank you so much for sharing your hobby and passion with all of us and especially with her.❤️
Thx, David...good that u have those memories.
Man your video compositions are truly artwork. Heck, I bet you could make a mesmerizing piece on how to rake leaves 👍
She will remember this day for a life time.
You're doing a great job with Zinnia. She's a blessed young girl to have you. Thank you for sharing this with us all!
Thank you Tom for sharing this build video .I like the way you built the wing and the smile on young Ziinnia`s face is priceless.
Thx, Ian. It was time well spent, from the very start.
We appreciate these gliders as simple in construction, yet capable in performance. Elemental flight. For many, the first source of such wonder.
remember that first flight?
Fantastic video! I have never gotten over the urge to run after my plane. But do you see how high she kicks her heels and lifts her knees? That is the key to not falling down and breaking 7 ribs chasing after your glider.
She will never forget going flying with you!
Thx, Ken. Her joy is infectious, natural. Indeed, I'll never forget this day either.
Sweet memory and a beautiful plane. What a smile.
That's how families are supposed to work. That was beautiful.
Another great post Tom!
It makes me realize I live too far away from my Grand-Daughters!
Perfect, I wish all children had the chance to be part of this wonderful hobby.👏👏Bravo Zinnia.
For a moment, I thought Zinnia was going to do her first build! Turned out great, Tom. A special moment for the 2 of you.
One of the must beautiful videos about flying model airplanes ever!!! ❤
Add a small 'flag' - a short piece of cloth to the towline just below the ring and it's drag will help it unhook better on release. Takes off like a rocket under tow!
Hope you two enjoy many trips to the field to fly! Some day she'll be 34 and hopefully you' ll both look back fondly to when she was little and you flew together.
This is the kind of thing that makes up your life. A tiny balsa wood glider and days flying with your kids!
Very cool mate.
Not sure if either is better.
Seeing this at 6 y.o. or at 65!
I love it at 65! Still?
Feeling more like a kid every day. Cheers!
@@maxfliart ❤ just some days!
Wonderful Tom! Much love to you and family from us all here in Devon UK, Cheers, Marc
Thx, Marc. Cheers!
Radość w oczach dziecka - bezcenne. Pozdrawiam Andrzej.
Dziękuję, Andrzeju. Ona jest skarbem.
Tom I feel a great spirit coming from this video
Thx, Tom.
Pure joy that will last a lifetime and make a successful individual. God bless.
Great video.
Great, heart-warming and joyful video, thank you !
Simply beautiful!
Wonderful! Depend on it Tom; Zinnia will NEVER forget the first glider flights with Grandad. These kinds of memories cannot be bought in a box, they come moments exactly such as these. I v much like this Jedelski wing, combining strength with a really capable airfoil section. I remember a small 'pod and boom' bird from Kiel Kraft, called Gnome - the wing was built up and tissue covered. Had I fitted a wing like this I'd have had more success (I was into dangerously insane bungee activity).. I'd put a rubber band on the (up) elevator, then air resistance would suppress it for the dangerously insane bit (or, perhaps, 'launch'), then it would do a loop and glide beautifully. That was the theory, anyway, but we can't ALL be genius aeromodelers, and thanks to you and your channel, we can all enjoy aero perfection vicariously, and without incurring the wrath/amused contempt of golfers, dog walkers etc.. A lovely film Tom. 🌟🌟👍👍
Thx, William. Very much appreciated.
Great Jobs ! Beatyful !
Very nice built !
You are a blessed man!
awesome
It's great to see!
Well done!
This simple model looks amazing. Reminds me of the time I made a keilkraft wisp. I remember bring it to a picnic and I left it on a table. When I was gone 2 curious kids have gotten their hands on the wisp. It looks like they broke it to bits from playing with it! The only parts remaining was the body, peices of wood and tissue littered everywhere. I might build this as a stronger alternative
What a great video!
NICE!!!
Great video! Hope I can inspire my grandkids with your example.
Good luck with that, Leonard. Have fun!
espectacular, precioso!
Magic...Glider⭐💯⭐😊⭐🛩⭐🥰⭐Fantastic Model🛩💯👍
Fajna zabawa.
Na profilu Jedelsky zrobiłem kiedyś 2 m model , całkiem nieźle latał.
Good to hear!
@@maxfliart fajnie że młodzież też się bawi :)
Pozdrawiam
So great!!
Beautiful 🙂
Kolaborasi kreatifitas dan moment yang sangat indah. Keren sekali
Terima kasih. Kami berdua menikmati seluruh pengalaman.
The little jump says it all.
Back around 1959 or 60 (middle school years) I built a very similar all balsa glider from plans in MAN. It was called ELROD and flew great…with the added excitement of being JetEx powered! What could be better? All sheet balsa construction coupled with the frustcitement that was JetEx powered flight! 😅
Good stuff, Lane.
excellent build i will build one also just down loaded the plan i like the jedelsky option so hard to find any light 1/4 balsa sheets anyway lol i use a mini high start on my small gliders that i fly at my local ball field
Thx. Have fun with it. It's a surprisingly good model for anyone, be it a vet or a newbie. My granddaughter really enjoyed it.
eggsclllent. good job on getting her started . clap.
Maybe this glider can be converted to a micro RC DLG. I will try!
Show !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful video! I really appreciate sharing your knowledge about building such gorgeous and efficient plane. Excuse my "newbility", but why would you put the hook slight off-center (to the left)? Also, and maybe I apologise if the answer is in another video, how do you build the ribs? Finally what would be the necessary toolkit to start building a wood plane? I have no idea where to find those pins you use at the beginning to hold the wings.
Thx. The offset hook helps to keep the model straight during the tow, but it also might require some slight rudder adjustments. Every model is different. The ribs for this wing were simply wedge shapes made of 1/16" sheet balsa. The pins shown are no longer available (a 1990s cottage industry that didn't stay in business too long) but other pins can be found at hobby shops or on the web. Search for "modeling pins". Other model supplies can found at Easy Built Models or Volare Products...web addresses in the description above. Easy Built also has a section with many modeling tips.

@@maxfliart Thanks a bunch!
Why does one wing have more ribs than the other?
Ha...I knew someone would spot that. Good on u. It was a mistake that happened when I made both halves on the flat board. I should have flipped the position of the ribs on one of the panels...but it all worked out ok.
Another great video. Enjoyed ! Can you describe how you added the required weight to the nose for balance?
Thanks !
Thx, Jeff. Initially, I added clay on top of the nose until the glide was smooth. Then I cut out a divot under the tip of
the nose and sunk the same amount of lead in there. I then covered the cavity with balsa and sanded it smooth to hide it all.
@@maxfliart looking forward to giving this one a try. Thanks for sharing
Dear sir, Can I design my own airfoil or do I have to refer to the world standard aeromodelling airfoil table? 😊🙏
I'd say yes, go with what feels good to you. I'm sure there's a perfect airfoil for these birds, but I've never searched them out. Not too scientific, but they seem to fly well enough, and I enjoy it, so that's plenty for me.
Hi Tom greetings from New Zealand a great video. Really like the jekelsky airfoil. How did you decide your rib size to get a good shape?
Thx, Keith. Nothing Scientific. I went with what felt right. Here's the shape. hallmanstudio.com/Jedelsky_wing.pdf
そうなのか!翼型はバルサをそのように接着するとGŌTTINGGENやBENEDEK翼になるのか!
this looks fun can i make it like flying a kite? 😅
👍
I like this video, I know this isn't the point, but for goodness sake - you are *holding the wing in one hand and sanding an airfoil in it with a block in the other*?! Just "in the air"? At least teach the kid proper techniques!
it was the opposite of smart to use a single-surface profile in the wing of a GLIDER.!!!!!!
,nice zaic design. Got one myself.
